Devil Eat the Groundhog. Clawhammer Banjo. gDGBD.
The arrangement is mine, based on the fiddling of Owen "Snake" Chapman. Tuning is standard G.
There are a few tabs out there, but this works a treat to play along to the fiddle recording on here played by Mr Chapman.
I wonder how he got the name? Maybe from a snake handling church? Or perhaps something else.....?
Oh, and I also wonder how tasty groundhog is? It ought to be good, so why should Old Nick get it? Greasy maybe??

Plane Wreck in Los Gatos Canyon. (Deportees). Clawhammer Banjo. gCGCD

Obviously this is the words of Woody Guthrie - here describing the plane crash in the Los Gatos Canyon of 1948. The tune was written by Martin Hoffman in the 1950s. The flight was carrying Mexican deportees out of California, back to Mexico. The crash killed 32 people. The press reports only named the four US citizens, the Mexicans all remained nameless until fairly recently following research ...
One take, two clawhammer banjo songs, and the mighty River Spey.

I've been playing in public more recently, so here is a single take of two songs, with some fluffs of lyrics, and the melody. I need to do this more. Mostly so I can learn to cover up fluffs a bit better! (It includes an eBay notification from my phone at the end - I wonder if that's copyrighted??)

Sometimes just called "Yarrow". This is based on the version recorded by Red Tail Ring where Laurel Premo plays sublime clawhammer banjo. My version is less sublime, but it does the trick. This is an old Scottish song, about the Yarrow Water, a river in the South East of Scotland, not the Yarrow River (Lancashire) or the plant (Achillea millefolium.) RTR play this is C minor I think, but from a...
"Come all ye fair and tender ladies." Clawhammer Banjo Walkthrough. eCGCD

I hope you play this one. It's a simple, single part song. Normal double C tuning is fine, but I prefer eCGCD. I think there are many many different lyrics to this, but a common verse is: Come all ye fair and tender ladies, Take warning how you court young men, They're like a star on a summer morning, First they appear, and then they're gone. Whilst I should point out they're not all like that,...

I love the Red Tail Ring version of this. So that's what mine is based on. Don't get me wrong, I love the Maybelle Carter one too, but this just has the edge for me. And of course it has Laurel Premo's clawhammer banjo. My tuning is a little sharper than eCGCD, but not enough to be fC#G#C#D#!

Camping clawhammer banjo - "All the pretty little horses." gCGCD# (but lower)
Переглядів 2242 місяці тому
This is down a whole step / tone from gCGCD# tuning, which makes it double B flat minor..... This is late in a campsite with other people sleeping, so I'm doing everything quietly so as not to annoy or worse be asked to leave. But it is a lullaby, so I guess that works. This is a wee bit dark as a song for children. Pete Seeger thought it was an anti slavery song, and the dark half is certainly...

A man you don't meet every day. Clawhammer Banjo Walkthrough.
Nice one! I’d love one of your tutorials of Banish Misfortune in G, yes 5 string clawhammer, as I normally play the fiddle on that, but I’m pretty bad at fiddle IMO. Just putting that out there😊
Thanks for the nudge! I have had a look, it's a tune I've never played, though the key is fine. Often with a new Irish tune I'll try it on tenor banjo first to get a feel for it. Watch this space, but don't hold your breath! (Seems quite fiddly..... In both senses.)
Hey, Andy! Sounds like the devil is enjoying that groundhog!
Thanks!! 🙏🙏
Incredible! Do you use Spotify or Soundcloud etc to upload your stuff??
No, all my music is on here. I've been asked a few times now, so if I can get better at the tech side I may stick something on SoundCloud.......
@ I understand. I think you are one of the better banjo players going around and would certainly stream your music if it were available.
@JeanBaptiste_ thanks 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Amazing. I wanna learn to play a banjo.
You should definitely do it! 😁😁
Nicely done!
Thanks! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Nice tune! Thankyou😊
Thanks 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Such clean playing, and what a pleasing melody. I hear greasy groundhog is good, but the devil can have my portion!
Thanks 🙏🙏. Glad you like it. It's such a short tune it's hard not to play each part more than twice each time through!
Magic. 🤩👍
Thanks 😊😊😊

Hey pal I’m only 14 and tryna learn banjo well enough to the point I can play some fun songs and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna use this as my first tutorial thanks a lot for usin your time to create this hope you have a mighty fine day!
Great to hear from you, and thanks for the comment. Good luck with song, I hope you keep singing it for years to come! 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for sharing, I know this tune but never knew the name of it, or maybe it’s called something else in California.
Thanks so much for the comment. I'm glad you liked it. I've never seen another 5 string banjo version of this, but it kind of works I think. I'm glad it's traveled all the way to California! 😊🙏😊🙏
❤
Thanks. This was a lovely banjo. It sold quickly!
This is so great! Your use of dynamics and restraint is really lovely :)
Thanks, glad you liked it! ☺️☺️
What scale and key are you using?
Hi, thanks for the question. It's in a slightly lower version of sawmill tuning. Sawmill is usually gDGCD. This is tuned fCFBbC. In terms of the musical theory stuff, the tune is modal, and has a minor third and minor seventh, but doesn't have a 6th. So you can't really nail it down to a specific mode. There is a good video on Banjohangout which explains the most common modes, if you need some basics. If not, hopefully that makes sense??
Wow, remember learning this song and the accompanying backstory from an Irish teacher many years ago. A sadly relevant song nowadays, but a beautiful and poignant rendition all the same. Much love ❤
I notice that a lot of Irish know this song...sadly a lot of Americans don't know it. It was never really played on the radio anyway.
Thanks for the comment, glad you like it. I'm sad the world is headed backwards on this too. 🙏🙏🙏
This land is your land had a verse deleted I think - for its politics...... Thanks for the comment 😊😊😊

@@cerddoriaethfynyddighey thank you. Is this the tuning you used F Bb F Bb C? I am new to playing Banjo….
Yes, you have a good ear! Thanks for the question!
It's great to here Scottish tunes on the banjo keep them coming. 🤩👍
I keep trying! (I keep taking my 5 string to our local session, not sure how it goes down.....) Thanks for the comment 😊😊😊😊

Thanks! I'll try but I'll have to learn it again!! 😁
A sad story that seems to resonate strongly. Thanks for your recording….🪕
Thanks for the comment, glad you liked it 🙏🙏🙏
This is wonderful, thanks for posting!
Thanks 🙏🙏🙏🙏 glad you liked it!
Very good sir. Is that beautiful banjo a Vega??
Hi, yes, it's a late 1920s tubaphone tenor, with a new 5 string neck built over here in the UK. I have kept the tenor neck intact to sell on with it, but unless times get very hard, I'm not selling! Thanks for the comment!
Super ! One day I want to learn this in credible tune . Thanks so much ! I heard it from Junji Jerota and Mareka on banjo and harp.
Thanks for the comment, it's always good to hear from people. I find it a hard tune to follow and remember!
you ate this up 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks 😊😊
Thanks for this. Do you by any chance have a tab for your arrangement of this lovely tune in this tuning?
Hi there, I don't have a tab as I worked this one out by ear. I have a tutorial video on here though, I hope that helps some? 🙏🙏🙏🙏
How are you counting this? I can’t seem to get a grip on the time hahaha
Hi, Great question. It's 4/4 time, but super crooked. This is one of those songs which is irregular! Listen to Nora Brown's playing, the sections and fills she plays are wonderful and powerful. But I can't make them regular in my head! Learn the basic "a part" theme, then the B part theme, then sing the lyrics into it, and it will take shape. Harder to explain than do, the two parts are not too complicated. Try the Peggy Seeger version too, that is a different melody and a little bit more regular in shape. If you can live with crookedness it will work for you!
Andy, we are so fortunate to have you spurning us on. Thank you!
As ever John, your comments cheer me up! Thanks for taking the time! 😊😊
beautiful playing!! what are the names of the two songs?
Hi, the first is called "No Man's Land" (sometimes known as "The Green Fields of France"), and the second "Fair Willie Drowned in Yarrow" or sometimes just "Yarrow ". Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you liked them! 😊😊
Lovely! ❤
Thanks 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Great video, thanks a ton for this
Glad you like it. Thanks for the comment! 😊😊
Dogs the world over. Lovely song , can I sing it to mine? Great stuff.
Thanks 🙏🙏🙏🙏 of course sing it to your dog. The dog I wrote this for howls at a fiddle, howls at harmonica, but loves my banjo! (Maybe it smells of the goat skin on it???) Thanks for the comment!
Thank you, Andy!
Thanks John, good to hear from you again. I always appreciate your comments! 🙏🙏

Hi! I’m not sure if you read the comments, but I want to thank you for all your videos. I live in Virginia, but am currently visiting a few friends in Wales. This might be a long shot, but might you be interested in meeting up for a banjo lesson together? (I’m not sure if you live in Wales-just an educated guess!) Regardless, thanks for all you do for the banjo community. Signed, David Bernier
Hi David, Wales is beautiful, I hope you enjoy it. We live in Scotland now, so unfortunately I'm too far away now. I hope the weather is kind to you ☺️☺️☺️☺️ (I always read comments and always reply..... I love hearing from people who use my videos! Thanks for reaching out!)

A tune that rolls out in a way that makes you play it faster than you should would describe cold frosty morn, personally. I wonder if this tune is about my native snake river. Probably not, seeing as I'm from the West US and, "snake" is probably one of the most common names attributed to a river.
It was written by Peter Lippincott, over on Banjohangout he's quoted as saying "I just came up with it noodling around one day, oh so long ago. String bands in St. Louis where I lived took it to Galax and other fiddle venues and it caught on. Who knew? I named it after the Snake River, but other than sounding like a cool name there is no added significance. I also wrote an influential contra dance by the same name at about the same time. Doubling down on a good name I guess.” Not sure if there is a Snake River near Galax?
Awesome.
Thanks 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for this lovely version. I am learning it to play to my new grandson. I appreciate your playing and willingness to share it.
Thanks! We sang this to our son when he was little, and to our granddaughter now. Thanks for the comment! 😊😊
I wasn't able to play the last few weeks , i have got the C part now and the b part not yet😂
Keep playing it and it will come good. Quite often I find practising and practising a tune one day, then sleep, and in the morning it will just come better...... Good luck!
