Commander Damage is a Terrible Rule. Here's Why.

Hi friends! This is another video about a subject matter that I'm just very interested in. Commander Damage is a terrible rule, but can definitely be fixed, so I thought it might be fun to explore those possibilities. You got yourself another sub here 💪
crazy. been watching your dota vids 10 years ago and ….. bam! mtg! started mtg after rage quitting dota 7 years ago lol. great to see your content again. again top level.
I started playing EDH back in 2011, and man do I miss it. I miss the weird games, the oddball generals you'd normally never see playing competitive constructed, and being able to play your dollar rares/mythics or cards with walls of text. There was a sense of personalization that's missing now. You would really put your style and personality into a deck before you started tuning it.
Depends on the friends group; if you are playing casual magic you can agree on certain terms. We did "everybody is allowed to buy a commander for 3 bucks and then throws together his bulk or other stuff that isn't used in a real deck". Very fun and you get decks that nobody would play anymore; often with mechanics that just can't compete normally. Sure, it's way slower and pretty janky but you wouldn't play those cards even again otherwise.
i think i've cooked up a way to abolish commander damage without skewing the powerbalance to lifegain decks. what if commander damage was gone but life totals were capped at 50. you can gain life up to that point but trying to go to 51 or 100 or arbitrarily large life gets you to 50.
i think Kokusho's attention stems from the fact that in the era, it was a relatively modern card so proccing her trigger was the most accessible way to turn edh into archenemy with the 20 point life swing against each opponent in a four player game. and it's so easy to build a deck around reanimation that it wasn't the first Koku trigger that ended the game, it was the second one.
Just found your channel: nice videos! I also thougt about your first suggestion when thinking of simplifying the rule. Another idea is a system that just counts hits by commanders. This could be done in the way of your first two suggestions. Everytime you hit a player with your commander you get 1 point and you win with a set number of hits
I have a fledgling channel and discord community all focused on budget competitive commander (I agree, best way to play). What I truly want is for the sub format to get to the point where you can hop on spelltable and get a game whenever you’d like. I want to organize a tourney. But first maybe a teams event. I’d love to discuss the format with you. There ought to be some synergy between us that should be worth something. 🤷♂️ Namaste 🖖 ua-cam.com/video/3aCRKnC3eO8/v-deo.htmlsi=KUFyL-3mt9i5qax9
So this isn't exactly a new idea and it runs into some problems with cards spiking in price sometimes for seemingly no reason. It's also just not the okay experience that a lot of people are looking for. One of the pulls is cEDH like any meta game is mastering your deck and letting that deck is consistent is part of that. I wouldn't call this an alternative to Cedh as much as it is just budget magic?
Glad to see you putting out new content. How many Dota and MTG fans both out there?
I love this masterpiece you assembled. It's awesome to learn from the past
Budget can never be a true competitive restriction because as soon as a budget deck is popular it will no longer be budget
Love this take, and I love deep diving into strange synergies. Often you can find something that fits a particular mold as well or sometimes better in a specific strategy. Usually I build cheap as I can, too, and go bigger once I've played and find places where I know it can benefit. Also, I find the more i play a deck, the more I slowly bling it out. Even if it was a $15 build to start.
I am ok with proxies, but lgs' in town prohibit them and players with valuable collections dont want them played. I'm blessed to own a valuable collection and the barrier to enter cedh is lower. I think knowing local players and rule zero are what work best for me. This feels like pauper and I have realized I really only enjoy playing powerful cards and cards that I have a nostalgic connection to. The UB stuff isnt for me. CGI art isnt for me. Thankfully there is enough cool stuff for me to play independent of what wotc intends. I didnt stick with modern or pauper. I play legacy, c/edh, and I collect oldschool cards. I open to play with most anyone and I welcome proxies.
Loved this ❤
The format would eventually evolve towards a set of staples like cEDH. I believe the best way to bring variety to a competitive EDH game would be to use a point system like Canadian highlander. This way almost everycard can be played, but you have to choose which staple/tutor to use over others
what do you do when the value of a card randomly jumps though?
Glad to see this channel is taking off :D
I've started playing cEDH a few months ago and my first deck was Magda since it's a budget friendly option. Given the incredible consistency it shows in a cEDH environment i had fun in Moxfield building a 50€ version of it. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree i guess: did some playtests and it's able to consistently present a win on turn 4. The list currently is at 49.17€ with "update to cheapest in stock" and Cardmarket as price source. The deck really seems busted in this format so i wanted to share it if anyone wants to give it a try. For the list there you go: /decks/aFRs4IdWskyyv9Ef2yVdpg (can't post links cuz youtube policies so just paste this after moxfield base url) Feel free to ask any clarification on the win lines :)
In Brazil we play commander 500, wich beeing decks capped at R$500,00 (500 reais), by the price conversion it should be somewhat close to the 50 euros commander
That's so hilarious because DOTA rotted my brain the exact same way. I played a couple games after going to my LGS last night just to say hi to my CEDH friends, that I have little desire to play any games with. I'm on the same page, creativity is one of the funner parts of magic for me.
Do you have a more expensive version of this deck? This looks like fun in EDH tournaments with a higher price ceiling like $200
Like Kokusho, there are many cards on the banned list that seem like pet peeves. As if they somehow caused personal pain to one of the RC.
43:53 They kinda did one other community wide deck building challenge pretty recently. For pride month this year, they made an event in which players were allowed to treat all commanders as though they had the Partner keyword. It wasn’t a change to the ban list and only existed as an event people could attend, but it did add a new spin on the commander format
nice!
hey man youre awesome. Second veideo ive seen from you. The first video was the secret Norin naya EDH deck. Such a cool idea i told my friend who runs norin, and hes making that deck because i sent him your video. Then i watched this one. Noticed you talking about a fun Derevi deck, Which was the next deck i was working on. Subscribed in that moment. Youre very good, and extremely relatable and i think youre voicing opinions many of us have, but we arent seeing expressed well anywhere right now. Please capitalize on this and stick around. Great videos, keep it up.
great video as always!
Hey man, great video. Just so you know, when you see the name Jesus written on a Spanish name, it's pronounce "hay-soos" not Jesus
I think I will build your Derevi deck. I wish my playgroup are willing to play with budget. I found the play pattern more enjoyable. Do you have the Pantlaza deck list? It sounds like a deck that I will enjoy
This deck sounds amazing! My Rube Goldberg Machine brain *loves* all these Combos, I might need to put this one together. Thanks for the awesome vid!
Hell yeah, yet more sick videos, stories of dota-ish stuff on a more frequent schedule is excellent
Can I suggest naming it “50CC”, like the engine size?
Dang I really want that ellivere list....
I really don't like the idea of having to type every card name into midfield and require using a computer to help me make a deck with a budget. I prefer a simpler method/challenge of a few decks that are strictly uncommons and/or commons. Much less of a reliance on checking with a computer. I know some would complain about both mana drain & force of will originally printed at uncommon but if people really want to complain about that than a ban list can be instituted if necessary.
Funny how I've also been a dota player dragged into EDH, and even used to watch your stuff back in the day! Watching ur vids is like revisiting my old house, its cozy and brings fond memories. Glad to see you still exploring games and game design as a whole, keep up the good work :)
cEDH is - at least in europe - 100% proxy friendly. WotC not being part of the format for so long really helped the community with the developing of a healthy tournament scene.
I would LOVE for there to be an online event for this! My locals is only cEDH and is not proxy friendly. It would be an amazing way for me to get to play more in competitive pods without spending a fortune 🙏
I can see from many of the card choices that Baumi is a (MTGGoldfish) Richard enjoyer. Secret Rendezvous, Fog, Bouncelands, Skullwinder, ...
Where do you play this?
An option for your tournament popularity: Find an online forum and host sign ups online, having more than one a week. I don't get to play often enough for any competitive format. Budget formats feel exclusive because I can't use the strong cards I've accumulated over the years. I'm not a particularly skilled player (as a result of not being able to play but once a month at best), taking me some 50ish games to get my first 4 player pod win and I had to go full try hard to pull it off. 5 Tutors (most of the best ones) with a mono black drain deck using vito and gary reanimation. All that and I BARELY won.
Ah, ¢EDH.
awesome video! I would love to see yourself or someone create a discord server or similar for people from wherever to discuss and maybe play some online games for this format!! it would be huge for people like myself who don’t have a big mtg scene locally.
I find very funny the idea that if this format becomes REALLY popular, cards that are really good in it will start to rise in price. and then not be as good cuz they're expensive now. It self-regulates. 😂
Bodying cEDH tables with my turbojank meme combos is the only thing that still makes me feel alive
Just clicked the bell button - this content is fantastic
I seem to have the most fun in high power commander. I like Cedh, and also casual edh. But high power is so damn fun. It’s like not quite Cedh, but also not precon level either.
My LGS runs $150 cEDH. It's nice.
In the local stores here we had some CMD50 tournaments too, at first nobody though it would be possible due to the small price, but damn, not only the amount of decks variety was surprisingly big, many efficient decks i did to that small budget turned to be decks good enough to win many matches against more expensive decks Nobody believed me when i said the deck was just 50,00BRL until i showed the deck list
