A nice mostely easy day to Shap. The hills of the Lake District are getting closer. Some lovely farmland walking round Orton and more limestone pavement before crossing the M6 into Shap

A day off and I'm down one walker. Decided to have a rest day in Kirkby Stephen and miss Nine Standards Rigg due to the bad weather (it threw it down all day). The Lakes creep closer and I revisit some familiar territory from a previous walk,

The longest day so far starting at Danby Wiske and finishing in Richmond. Wet, wet, wet! A terrible day, weather wise, with long spells of heavy rain. This just became a "get there" day. Thankfully spending the night in a hotel in Richmond!

Congratulations on finishing the C2C! I really enjoyed watching your videos and appreciate your effort to share them.
Thanks for following the journey (and commenting). I loved every minute of the hike (that may not quite be totally true 😂) - it was such a fantastic trail
If its the campsite on the main road through Horton that you stayed at then its the one I camped on the night before and after walking the Yorkshire 3 Peaks. I found it noisy throughout the first night and ended up going to sleep in the car as the owner was playing loud music and several large groups not so quiet, but the next night I was so tired I could have slept through just about anything. After that always stayed in Settle.
Yep. There was quite a large DoE group in - older than usual and they very much seemed to be on their own. I think I may have passed a few of them as I came down to the road after coming off Fountains. It’s the first time I’ve ever experienced a loud DoE group like that. Sometimes, just sometimes I wish I could carry a bugle with me….
A walk and collection of videos to be very proud of, well done 👍
Thanks for following the journey! It’s an incredible walk with so many highlights
Reckon this was the day I bumped into you. I'll be giving your vids a watch! Give my journey a gander too
I think I was collapsed in a heap on the heather not far off Sunbiggin. There was a steady trickle of folk that day. Good to see you got to the end. The rest of it must've been a piece of cake after the Lakes! Given you a sub and enjoying your journey so far
By following the cycle path till you got to the steps (9.26), you avoid having to cross the A595 (which can be crazy depending on times and traffic coming from, or going to, Sellafield) and unfortunately miss the famed walker statue. Well done on completing the walk. You were lucky the tide was in - it can add a lot of steps when the tide is fully out.
That was the downside of heading west. There were a few times I just had to make the route up myself! It gives me an excuse to come back to do it again. The coast was very dramatic - the wind was doing its best to blow me off the cliffs at times.
Well done on finishing what is a superb walk. Brought back fantastic memories of my crossing in 2021. We need to talk about the elephant in the room.. the section between Keld and KS. Totally get why you skipped it in the weather you had but you must go back and complete it. It's a great section in good weather. Any plans to do it? Well done again Cheers Ade
Thanks for watching. Yes. Already planning getting back down to fill in the gap in the summer. It could be a bit fiddly public transport wise. I think there is a walkers bus on a Sunday during the summer? If I don’t get back to do it it’ll irritate me for ever! 😆
I think the route once fully adopted will send you on the N shore of Ennerdale - much easier walking but a little longer. 2 yrs ago when it was announced this would become a national trail, there was virtually no way markers in the Lakes so those new ones will be a boon.
The route had certainly changed a bit from Ennerdale Bridge to the lake. It looks like there will be no marking above the wall boundary lines. It was all a bit random really. I guess they’ve got around 6 months or so to install it all.
What gorgeous weather for your penultimate day on the C2C! Thanks for another great video.
I was so lucky. The morning view from the front of the hostel was so beautiful. It made for just a wonderful day
Well done. I've enjoyed watching this series the last few weeks and will miss the wait for the next one. Hopefully you'll be doing another walk and a video series in the near future.
Thanks for following my journey. Currently planning next years hikes. I think the Cateran Trail could well be one in the spring, and I'm seriously considering the Hebridean Way for the summer if I can work out a suitable schedule for that. Meanwhile, I'll be trying to get out to continue the walks in the Borders when I can, and the John Muir Way in instalments!
Well done Aaron on completing this fabulous walk. I have thoroughly enjoyed your vlogs and its brought back so many memories. Looking forward to whatever you do next 🙂
It really is such a fantastic route. The section through the Lakes was just phenomenal. Yet to set in stone the next long one, but I think the Cateran Trail and Hebridean Way are most likely.
Well done on getting all the way to St Bees and thanks for sharing your journey with us, good views and commentary.
Thanks for following my journey. It's such a wonderful route - certainly one of the best in the UK!
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your journey, I wonder how many GoPro batteries you took with you 🤔 anyway congratulations 🥂 from this Whitehaven resident 👏🏻
I had four - I have a neat little charger box that carries three inside. Made a huge difference keeping the batteries charged, as the GoPro drains even the long lasting ones really quickly! Thanks for following my journey!
What a feeling to know it’s almost done, this is my home area, I hope I can recreate your route next year, just need my right knee to be in agreement ! 🙂
Good luck! I hope it's strong enough for you to manage it. It was a wonderful experience.
Done W2E in Sept 22 and looking to walk E2W next time - living in Whitehaven I can walk home after getting to St Bees. Hope the knee gets better - it's a grand walk.
Your video is absolutely mesmerizing! The landscapes are captured so beautifully. Thanks for sharing these amazing views! 👍4
Thank you too!
Amazing views from the trail on this day. Wow! I'm really liking this east to west route. Thanks for the video.
Absolutely my favourite day. The lakes are such an incredible place!
Really enjoying your journey. Strange seeing c2c in reverse. Who sings the theme tune?
Thanks for watching! I have to admit (and as a musician I die a little inside for using it), it was AI generated.
Ah thanks for explaining.
What a glorious day's walking. A stunning part of the lake district 😍and two fabulous hostels, brings back some beautiful memories
For me it was the best day of them all. Very lucky with the weather. I'm going to have to go back and spend a few days at Black Sail
Nice to meet you in the YHA in Ennerdale. Hope your C2C went well.
It was great to have a chat with you guys. The rest of the hike was great! How did you get on in the end with your tour of the Lakes?
We had a great time after the Lakes we headed up to Fort William and did the CMD Arete on Ben Nevis.
How was the weather for you on the Ben? The day out of Ennerdale must've been spectacular for you!
@ Yes our day out of Ennerdale was fantastic weather wise very sunny and warm. We climbed up and over to inon tarn and then down to Honister… We also had spectacular weather on the CMD Arete and the Ben..
Thoroughly enjoying your east to west journey, I’ve paused this at 13 minutes to see if you walk along the length of Haweswater before ascending or follow Measand beck then over long grain, low and high raise to Kidsty pike, let’s see ! I live just 4 miles from St Bees so considering an east to west crossing too. Happy hiking.
Yep. I decided to go up that way. I think it was a bit of an easier climb, but it was still a long haul up there. Met a Canadian couple who had decided to come down that way as well. The wind on top was wild. There were quite a few wind blown walkers around up there!
Very interesting to see an East to West coast to coast crossing , I did the West to East in 2016 and living only 4 miles from St Bees I’ve been thinking of doing the same, thanks for posting your journey.
thank you! great to see that place! beautiful land
It really is! It's one of my favourite places
Love your videos. Well done on the reverse lining crag. I like how we get to see a lot of the scenery with you. I agree about yhas. Use them often and it's a shame what's happening.
I figure folk would rather see the trail than my face! 😆The way down the crag was pretty treacherous. Glad you're enjoying the videos and thanks for watching!
What an excellent day's walking - and fabulous scenery. I became a YHA life member over 30 years ago but find I have used them less and less during the last 10 years now there are less hostels available and they have became more popular so more difficult to book. So so different from before. I could go on but I wont 🤣
I got my life membership 20 years or so ago. So many great hostels gone now. I stayed at Acomb near Hadrians Wall not long before it closed in 2005/6 ish. Brilliant little hostel and such an enjoyable place to stay. I remember a fellow there who used to cycle round the hostels in the north east, a former miner from North Shiels. He didn't look a day over 60, but was over 80! I wouldn't be surprised if he was still going!
Had similar issues trying to book accommodation with YHA for next June. At the moment looking at wild camping a few nights instead.
I love using hostels when I can, but it's becoming more and more difficult. I can think of at least 10 hostels I've used over the last 20 years that have gone - a few are now independents to be fair - I fear that it's an organisation that no longer knows what it wants to be. Patterdale hostel being sold is borderline insanity for me! It's not that long ago school groups were staying in hostels with the public. While I know why this is no longer the case, I really think the kids miss out on a massive part of the hostelling experience, which is to listen to the stories of the old sweats and their experiences of the outdoors.
We were at Grinton a few times recently and twice there were school groups which was lovely to see.
@@AndiS-qw6od It's always great to see kids in hostels. They bring a vibrancy to the place. It's sad that so often they don't get to stay with other hostellers. The passing on of stories, experiences and passion for the outdoors is as much a part of the hostelling experience as the activities. That said, there was a large school group at Borrowdale when I passed through. They were having a brilliant time. I had a quick chat with one of the kids and some of them were going canyoning that day!
Wow! You had some dramatic views on this section. Great video!
Grasmere common was just stunning. My respects to those folk who walk from Borrowdale to Patterdale in one day. That is a really tough ask!
Stunning, absolutely love the lake district in all weathers 😍
With the low cloud it was just so dramatic!
My goodness, that wind sounded a bit strong! Stunning views of the lakeland hills, agree its the best way to do it
It really did make the hike. It was difficult even to stand up at times in some of the gusts. Reaching the top was just a wow moment
Even in the rain, it was a beautiful hike. Thanks for the video.
Just loved this part of the walk. It was incredible!
Another lovely and interesting video Dollywaggon Pike or St Sunday Crag present you with some stunning views, thanks for sharing
The lakes really is a special place
Thank you very much for taking us with you on this journey. Greetings from Poland.
Thanks for watching!
Brilliant video, love Patterdale and surrounding area, thanks for this, really enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching. The views over Patterdale heading west were something else. Heading east you'd have your back to them most of the time. It was quite a wonderful days walking.
Wow, the views of the hills and lake are fantastic! I wonder if you dare to compare your trek on the Pennine Way and the Coast to Coast?
I think I enjoyed the Coast to Coast more. The Pennine Way has some incredible and memorable sections - when it's good it's an outstanding trail, but I found so many of the long empty moorland bits in between bleak, unyielding and a bit of a slog. The Lakes didn't disappoint either - and I got lucky with the weather!
Aarghhh, you forgot to permit captions. Us that are hard of hearing depend on them.😮 Great videos so far. Weather for you , not so great on some days.
Sorry about that. Added them now
Weather looked fantastic for the first part of the day. Beautiful views!
Been looking at how I might do this section - Richmond to Keld and I think I might get hotel in Richmond for 3 nights - Day 1, walk into Richmond, Day 2, leave most of the gear at Richmond hotel, walk to Reeth, use Keld/Richmond circular bus to get back to hotel - Day 3, leave gear in hotel, bus to Reeth, walk to Keld, bus back to Richmond - Day 4, bus to Keld and over to Kirkby Stephens. Cheaper than taxis and 2 days with lightweight bags.
That's a pretty decent idea. You could even have an extra day in Richmond if you wanted to have a rest day
A pretty day on trail. Outstanding scenery. Your dad put in a good effort, especially fitted with a full kit.
He was knackered at Keld. I think he would have made it to Shap with two easyish days, but the Lakes would have been a different matter. Kirkby Stephen was the easier place to get home from. Sensible decision in the end. It’s not a bad effort, he’s 78!
That was a very pretty section along the river. Thanks for the video.
Swaledale was just magical. Really enjoyable couple of days from Richmond
A wise decision not to go over Nine Standards Rigg in bad weather. The bogs are horrible at the best of times, I remember going down up to my calf in one!!
Had I been myself and heading east I may have done it. There's been vast improvements up there recently with a lot of slabbing work apparently, but it wouldn't have been an enjoyable experience. The up side was the drying room at the hostel was fantastic, so managed to dry the tent out properly!
This will be the direction I go if I get round to it. I did the Cleveland Way last year and just loved it so Id have to go in a different direction across the moors.
The Cleveland Way is a super route. The mist was down going over the Cleveland Hills when we did it, with about 50m visibility. It's such a great section with views up to Roseberry Topping (I think I remembered the name right). I'm going to have to come back sometime and do it the "proper" way, but to finish in the Lake District was just incredible.
Glad you got good weather, that was one of my favourite sections 😍spectacular scenery.
Really enjoyed the day, especially after the previous day's weather. To be out of the endless grey mirk since the Lion Inn was a massive relief
Beautiful day for a hike. 👍
'Varying degrees of pissing down' 🤣I'll have to remember that one. Well done - that was a horrible day 😥
This was certainly a lets just get to the end" kind of day!
That was some awful weather! Hopefully, you had a cozy room for the night. Thanks for the video.
We got to Richmond and the rain stopped. Thankfully the room had a heated drying rail. Glad it was a low level day and not one on the hills at least!
Hopefully the stiles and overgrown paths will be improved upon when C2C becomes a National Trail. It really does make things difficult.
There were a few random places where new gates have been installed and the waymarking was in place...but there is a heck of a lot of work to do before the trail opens properly. There's not a great deal of time to do it in either!
Seemed like a pretty easy day, comparatively. Thanks for the video.
After the previous two days it was easy walking. Stiles are a killer though, and there were quite a few in various states of repair. They really do slow down a walk
Such a pity with the fog - views are spectacular from up there. Enjoying the videos; so many memories.
I remember it being spectacular when I walked the Cleveland Way in 2018. Caught some great weather then. It was a section I'd been looking forward to revisiting too. That's. the luck of the draw hiking in the UK!
I've watched many videos going West to East in my planning for next year and then came across yours going in the opposite direction. Going to binge watch and then think about whether in 2026 I look to do the reverse and maybe some of the alternative routes.
Thanks for watching. It’s going to take a while to get all the videos up, but I’ll get there eventually. The biggest downside of an east to west is the lack of baggage transfer. Spoke to one of the carriers in Kirkby Stephen, and he was saying they used to do it, but it would go horribly wrong quite often and was a logistical nightmare. It was worth it to finish in the Lakes though. Can’t wait to start editing all that footage together!
@@blackcathiking7831 Not though about using one of the carriers as looking to wild camp a couple of times on my way. FOr me finishing at Robin Hoods Bay will be the highlight as spent many a day trip or holiday there growing up. FIsh and chip with a pint at the Bay Hotel is what I'm looking forwards to most.
I've been looking at the idea of crossing E to W after doing the more traditional W to E 2 years ago - living only a few miles from St Bees I'd be able to walk home at the end.
It really was a great way to do it. I think I missed the camaraderie of heading east, but the last few days took the wow factor to a whole new level
Thankfully, the mist lifted. 🌞 Thanks for the video. Looking forward to the next.
The mist had become pretty oppressive after more than a full day of it. When it suddenly cleared it was just fantastic
Thanks for the film. Your intro is top notch 👍
Now this is my kind of hike! Good stuff my friend!
It was a good day. Just a pity the mist came - and stayed!
@@blackcathiking7831 ❤️❤️ Yes too bad
