    Hi Cari Thankyou so much for all your videos and I love your book too How do you flip the design when drawing by hand? Do you just wing it !! Many thanks Allie

    • @AonCelticArt
      @AonCelticArt 4 місяці тому

      One easy way is to flip the image with a photocopier and then you can slide that under your sheet of paper and tape them to a window. Then you can trace the flipped side onto the sheet. Another way is to use a soft pencil lead - like a 2b - and trace over your lines. Then fold the paper in half at the centre line so the pencil lines face the blank side. Rub the back of the paper briskly with a spoon. The soft pencil lines should transfer lightly onto the other side of the page, and the. You can retrace them to darken them up. Smoother paper works best for this. I used to use “marker paper” (from an art store) and a 2B pencil to do it this way back in the very beginning. One thing to note is that when you flip the design your overs and u dear also get flipped - which means you’ll end up with over-overs and under -unders. So I used to flip it before the weaving stage, and then weave it after it was flipped so I could do the weaving right. 😘

    I just made the most basic of the designs. I realized during weaving that there are two strands. Do you always know how many strands there will be when you create the design? If so, how do you know?

    • @AonCelticArt
      @AonCelticArt 4 місяці тому

      I don’t really. Hahaha. I recall one Celtic artist having a formula for it, but I don’t remember what it was. There seems to be e plenty in the old manuscripts that had any number of strands, so I’m not sure they aimed for anything in particular with it. I’m usually making my knots to fit a shape or design or something like that, so I’ve never had a use to figure it out. Hahaha.

    I am extremely confused. I was always told a real celtic knot was one line all the way through, not two interwoven with each other, although many interwoven lines are very beautiful. How do I do an intricate pattern that is just one line you can follow all the way through? Is there a special trick that makes sure you don't have two or more different interweaving lines?

    • @AonCelticArt
      @AonCelticArt 4 місяці тому

      That’s not true with ancient Celtic works - they had any variety of knot strands, not just one. The old manuscripts are full of examples. People like to add all these extra myths and mystique to Celtic art - unnecessary, in my book! Celtic art is damn cool enough on it own! It doesn’t need any extra baubles added to it. Does a disservice to the ancient masters of it.

    I observed that one of your wall challenges produced a heart. Then I observed that another heart appeared oriented 180 degrees from the first if I closed the pattern. However, I then have 2 loose ends in the smaller first heart. It is on your download #10. Is there a way to make it work?

    • @AonCelticArt
      @AonCelticArt Рік тому

      Are you working on the bottom one on Worksheet #10? Email me a snapshot if you’re still having trouble and I’ll take a look. The pattern does work out to connect up, so something hinky must be going on. Head over here… the web form won’t let you attach an image, but if you type in the email address below and shoot me a copy of where you’re at we can get to the bottom of it. 😊 www.aon-celtic.com/emailer.html

    I love coloring the designs. It is another layer of delight. I have a full set of prismacolor and about half of the polychromos line. I am a huge fan of the variety and quality of the color in prismacolors, but when I color a design like these I wind up with colored dust everywhere. I use tracing paper to keep my skin off the design when I am coloring, but I still have colored pencil dust all over. I use a brush, but somehow, a lot of it escapes and smears what should be simply my paper. How do I overcome this problem? Watercolor markers seriously bleed through cardstock. Alcohol markers are better, but there is still a bleed. Help! What do you recommend?

      I’m a lefty and I feel your pain! I have a bunch of hand… mittens? I bought a pack of white tube socks, cut the toe off, and snipped a thumb hole. I wear it no matter what medium I’m working in, as it makes a buffer between my hand and the page and I can chuck it in the wash after. There’s also something called a mahl stick, which lifts your hand off the surface of your work. They feel very awkward to use at first, but can work well. I don’t think they’re very common nowadays but you can try with a piece of dowel first to see if it works for you. You can also try using some Masonite or thin plywood to make “rails” on either side of the page, and then a third piece acts as a platform for you to rest your hand on as the hand rest slides up and down the page on the rails. Doesn’t have to be high, just enough to skim your hand over the page without touching.

    Just ordered your book. Can’t wait to get it and to start drawing. I enjoy watching your instructional videos. Thank you.

    I tend to overwork my drawings. And I suck at shading and shadowing.

      Have you checked out the Embellishments video? I cover some alternatives there. Something like adding the triangles or little lines might work for you. If you’re just looking to add a bit of detail, I also show how to add some different piping outlines too. m.ua-cam.com/video/xoNwsfw9b7k/v-deo.html
