Before your interview(s), understand that you may not always be told the truth. I walked into a Bath and Bodyworks as a customer and was asked to be their assistant manager, which would require a multi-level interview process. I happened to be considering looking for a day job since I had been an overnight nurse for a few years and it was taking a toll upon my health. During the interview with the district manager I was extremely clear about the need to work no longer than eight hour shifts due to autoimmune conditions. I stressed that it was extremely important, and was promised the moon. I took a pay cut to take that job. The two week training promised and necessary for the position of assistant manager in a large retail chain store turned out to be frustratingly nonexistent. The paperwork responsibilities for that position were massive and required more instruction than was given, so it became an added stress to a job which forces employees to nearly harass potential customers into buying something. It's embarrassing to have to repeatedly bother the same customers who have already said that they don't need help, yet this is what you will have to do if you work there. It often backfires, no matter how pleasant, positive or excellent you may be at sales. Those were not the reasons I quit, though. Just three weeks after I had taken the job under the condition that there would be no 12 hour shifts, I was scheduled to work a busy holiday weekend day by myself for 12 hours without any other employees, no time for lunch or bathroom breaks. All promises broken. I knew that I could not physically handle that without suffering prolonged lupus flares which had already begun so quit. It left them with no one, although I'm sure they found someone to take that shift. There were times it was fun, yet happy image protected by the company publicly did not generally exist there. The district manager at the time was quite ruthless, willing to treat employees as objects and say anything to achieve her goal. I hope they learned something through that deceptive business practice which resulted in their being left understaffed. Not sure that they did because that location closed within a year. Don't believe everything they tell you.
