    This was an interesting discussion. Caden had some unfortunate experiences as a Marine. It happens. Albert, you struck a chord, "unnecessary stress," I say this expression a lot. It sounds like Caden had bad leadership and, sadly to say, was surrounded by some idiots and incompetents, it happens. You guys didn't highlight much as to what drove Caden to drink a lot and why he finally decided, enough was enough. I did the magical four years as an Infantryman. I knew when I had about a year and a half in I was going to do my time and get out; it was a no-brainer. I almost reenlisted during my 3rd year in, luckily I didn't. My three Westpac deployments were great but when it was time to get out, it was that time. Leadership is probably the root factor why someone stays in or gets out. The next factor is personalities.

    Great Podcast, im curious though . . Gunny you didn’t really seem to ask Caden too many questions about his “Business” I don’t doubt his success but I do question what exactly his “Business” entails. I did some digging of his and Sean’s account and I don’t say this to disrespect or discredit anyone, but if you google GFI (Global Financial Impact) they are a very questionable company. Almost very similar to Primerica if you have ever heard of them (Google them as well lots will come up) Like Gunny likes to say “Im playing Devil’s advocate here” It would be cool to have them on again and go a bit more in to detail of how they are making their success and how they get paid, etc. SgtMaj seemed to have been a little bit more curious /questionable of Caden’s success. Only reason I bring this up is cause I don’t want them painting a fake (for a lack of better words) to your audience, from the looks of it, if you click on their accounts anyone can apply to be a “Financial Broker”. Point is, I’m trying to get at is that it seems very similar to Primerica which is ultimately a Pyramid scheme in a way. Are people actually successful in those Primerica and GFI absolutely, I don’t doubt that but at what cost? Selling unnecessary products to family and close friends? Again, no disrespect but I’m sure the viewers who are seeking success are curious as well. Semper Fi brothers !

    People have to know their personal limits. This DI may have some issues or the stress has reached its threshold. I hope he will get better soon. The Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Smith, went running and passed out and subsequently needed heart surgery. Being physically fit is great but pushing unreasonable limits will lead to bad outcomes.

    As I was viewing the video and then reading the comments, all I can think of is if certain leaders don't give you the recognition you deserve, something is seriously flawed. I was in the infantry and had two deployments and just made three years in the Marines. I went to the Squad Leadership Course and Jungle Training Course and did all my MCIs. I consulted with my First Sgt about my promotion to Corporal. He said he would look into it. This was about the time I was asked about reenlisting. I was becoming unmotivated due to the BS and became very transparent and said I was not to re-up. I almost did, to go down to Panama but the Career Planner screwed up the packet. Having a year left, I transferred from 1/9 and went to 2/1 and did my third deployment. Returning back to Pendleton, I was promoted and still got out. The Marine Corps was a whole different game in the mid 1980s into the early 1990s. I was a Fire Team leader and at times filled in as Squad Leader. I never had gotten into trouble. I am not bittered. I learned don't wait for anything even if you believe you should get it, with certain exceptions. When I got out of the Marines, it was time to prioritize on other goals. My CO with 2/1 was a decent leader who wanted me to stay in. I respect him to this day. But in the end, I created opportunities for myself.

    This particular discussion was informative because your guest, Dylan Hernandez, mentioned what he did to transition from the Marines to a successful civilian. Powerful discussion. Albert and Barry, the reason why Dylan didn't remain in the Marines can be summed up, maybe that was all he needed from the Marines to serve and he had bigger goals and plans . Many Marines and other military members share one common denominator, they didn't necessarily have foresight and a plan. I know because I was there myself. I took the difficult road instead of finding a more paved one to travel. After the Marines, life as a civilian was tough but I didn't want to reenlist. What I learned through trials and errors and great difficulties is, 1) have foresight, where do you want to go or end up at; 2) create a plan to get there; 3) Keep it organized and; 4) whatever you do, don't procrastinate.

      @@The_DylanHernandez Hello Dylan, The discussion was fluid and interesting. I thought about Barry asking you about your decision to do your time and then leave the Marines. Personally, I view you as an intelligent individual who had mapped out your other life goals..I went in the Marines with the best package, open contract. I ended up as an Infantryman for my four years enlistment. My three Westpac deployments were very interesting; went to beautiful countries and met some very decent people. After I got out, it was majorally difficult. Many employers just didn't care about hiring veterans, at the time. Completed my university degree in Political Science and was able to work for the government for just over 20 years. We all need to map out our priorities. I came up with four basic steps and stuck to them. Dylan, you are intelligent and you know where you are doing and what your priorities are. You are there. Best to you & God bless to you and your family. My email is panama1821@yahoo.com..

    Did something a little different when I transitioned to the civilian world after retirement. Used my GI Bill, went to a Community College in Tampa, and got a degree in Respiratory Therapy. Rare to run into a Marine working in healthcare but hey, it’s a female dominant industry (I’m single by the way so no cheating going on). Recommend anybody looking to get out to checkout the various opportunities available in healthcare. With our aging population, there are more employment opportunities than qualified applicants. Many left the industry during the pandemic and never returned. It does mean more education/training, passing national medical boards, and a chance for you to utilize your education benefits. Search the medical programs available and prerequisites for those programs in the area you plan to live in. Schools will have a VA representative on campus to help with your benefits as well as job placement after graduation (working graduates is the best selling point for that school).

    Dumb question for yall... yall don't judge lol.... yall keep talking about how moving the ranks, "re-inlisting" again, keeps popping up?? Example: if someone wants to go into recruiting (I assume there's paperwork), why re-linlist, if you're already in the military?? I know what I get for assuming..

    • @josephwilson1333
      @josephwilson1333 9 днів тому

      Because you might not have enough time to fulfill that obligation to recruiting so most of the time your a Sgt and need to re enlist at the 4 year mark to go recruiting.

    • @TulsaWallace
      @TulsaWallace 9 днів тому

      @josephwilson1333 Oh, that makes sense. Thank you for responding........ how's it going?

    • @rollievancleave7753
      @rollievancleave7753 8 днів тому

      @@TulsaWallace yes, paperwork is involved, we call it a”package” and your package/request gets endorsed up your chain of command. One has to have sufficient time remaining on their current contract to be eligible for an assignment. Typically it’s a 3 year service obligation for something like recruiting but could be longer if there is a lot of training/education involved. Besides reenlisting, Marines can extend their contract the required amount of time to be qualified. Enlistment contracts have an expiration date. If we want to stay in for another term we can sign another contract (reenlist) or extend the current contract. Either way, the request has to be approved by higher headquarters and can be denied meaning that Marine has no choice but to get out; not everyone who wants to stay in can do so.

    Interesting conversation guys. Barry, your comments on your mentor Irene hit an interesting point. Leadership should check themselves, study their strengths and weaknesses and what they need to change. Subordinates will, in my opinion, do a better job when they feel they are being treated as unit members and their leadership is willing to know something about them, even something as where are they from or how are things moving along. Leaders will not blur boundaries. If anything, they will probably strengthen communication and cooperation. Look up the Hawthorne Effect, it was an interesting study. I strongly believe in learning different ways to connect with different people is extremely valuable and important. Good conversation!
