Mexico Stealth Overlanding Setup
Переглядів 1205 місяців тому
A detailed, but excruciatingly boring, look at our overlanding setup. We circumnavigated the entire Mexican coastline. 10,000 Miles and took roughly four weeks. We stayed predominantly on the beach but sometimes stealth camped in the bigger cities. Lots of beach roads, Baja 1000 tracks, some highway, and got to see almost every major city in Mexico!!!

Beadlock Wheel Failure - Bolt Fatigue

Failure analysis to find out why the bolts snapped on our beadlock wheels. We are always testing the limits of our equipment. We've ran these tires up to 55 PSI, we've ran them at zero, and they always performed well. There is a reason why we have a separate set of towing wheels - so we can beat these mercilessly. The instructions clearly state to replace the bolts annually The instructions cle...

Nice bikes bro thanks for the video
Time to get out there! Braaapppp 😄
I hope to start my build this winter.
Cant wait to see what you come up with!! Hit me on instagram or facebook so I can follow along.
Ya im still the excursion fan lol
Yep, its not going anywhere anytime so soon! Just keeps getting better 😍
Finally someone who understands what I've been experiencing! I got a 2004 Excursion and I noticed the stock caster is way too low, and that is before a 6 inch lift. I don't tow much so 12 degrees may be a bit much but I was thinking about 5.5 degrees of caster? Two different alignment shops have ignored my comments about it steering bad. They all said it was great... 1 of those was an off-road shop too. I really just want it to not be such a ridiculous bear to keep straight down the road.
It will be a game changer. Maybe its a liability thing because if the engine shuts off, it'll be that much harder to control. I'm thinking that's why they have zero caster from the factory. The alignment shops don't usually carry leaf shims, and the eccentric bushings will only go so far, so they just claim it's the way it should be. I'm interested to see how your experiments go, let us all know. Shims are inexpensive and easy to take in and out 😍
Love this video!! I’m really wondering what you have on the rear axle though.
Rear is 2005-08 factory axle with ARB air locker with stock leafs & 1" blocks, Fox IFP 2.0 shocks. Nothing fancy in the rear, all the magic is up front.
@@owlclawthanks, how much of a lift overall? You mentioned a 6” lift kit in the front; I’m basically trying to figure out how high to go to get the 37” tires where you have them. I love how you have kept the lift at a minimum,
So glad my xr650r has an electric start.
I bet its a game changer!!
@@owlclaw absolutely, luckily it came with one when I bought it because otherwise they cost a fortune to install.
Great video! Where are you based out of?
Phoenix AZ
Nice video good info! I do have a question for you I noticed you had an Excursion is it a 7.3? If so have you done anything to it to improve towing your toy hauler?
Yea its completely rebuilt, maybe cuz its a 6.0 😂
Well that makes sense lol. I have one with a 7.3
Love the Ex. I really like the front bumper. Not a fan of those heavy gage steel bumpers. I have the v10 but wish I could afford the 6.0. Nice vids!
Yea, its been a road with the 6.0 but nock on wood, its always given warning before leaving me stranded. Believe it or not most of the money spent so far has been on axels and suspension 👍
I still want an excursion front end kit. Ill pickup the junk yard parts. Lets go
One step closer to getting it done!! Hit me on Instagram DM and we see what you have to start with 😎
that is a boarzilla!!!
Literally the stuff Legends are made of!
En todo el video no he visto por ningun lado la Xr650 r mentirosos m..s...r..bles. 😠😠😠😡😡😡
How long did that take you?
It took about four weeks.
@@owlclaw man that’s cool to take a month off…
Definitely blessed and lucky to have staved off the world for that long for sure.
Too bad you didn’t take the excursion! 😀
Right, definitely would have been the better choice! it would have been at least 2X the size of the rest of the vehicles on the road tho.
@@owlclawwell Maybe we will be blessed with more excursion videos soon.
Any recommendations on what they should be about?
@@owlclaw well I’m trying to build mine a lot like yours, you have very detailed videos on the setup, I think at this point more wheeling…. Maybe views of the suspension flexing, etc.
Beautiful 😅
Thanks 😅
Idk both look good I think the key with 20s is to choose the right style wheel something like a big rig look like the MT classic big rig wheels 37s also look very balanced on 18s
So many awesome directions to go! I'd take one of each if I could.
In your opinion. If only one bike could be had for desert racing. R or X?
The og' X is a versatile platform, if you have to spend the day, or a week, on a bike I'd choose a mild setup - rocks, sand, waterfalls, some roads. But if you had only 4 hours to cover the distance and it was 50+ mph tracks then the XRR is going to absolutely dominate the higher speed stuff.
did it end up lifting the truck at all? or just increase the droop?
I tried hard to not lift it but I think its up about an inch or so.
I'm not in the off road market but this was a well made video.
Thx, chief. I've made hundreds of videos most suck, but every once in a while...
Nice, do you have video of the bumper build?
a Long one? Na, but I've been thinking about making a run of ten or so.
Do you have the link for the 4 link conversion kit???
Na, but I think PMF is doing a pretty good job trying to copy it. Check out @geeks4x4, he's doing great working thru the kinks.
I run 16/45 with a 6 speed gearbox on my Husaberg 650 when I race down there. There is no such thing as a larger fuel tank, so I keep the rpm’s low for fuel efficiency.
Yep fuel plan is key! I like the Giant Loop bags, I used them to get to Cabo and back on my KTM 950SE. There are also handlebar mounted solutions for the trials guys, that attach with velcro; you fill it, take it off at the rocks, then pick it back up to refill for the return trip.
Sweet video. Thanks for the showcase. Wicked Excursion. Joined the club last year.
Welcome aboard! Conversations keep reoccurring about replacing it but they always end the same way - that nothing compares to the versatility and capability!
Where did you get your on/off buttons. Those are clever
JCR Speed Shop had them and I bought a bunch before they forgot about their website. There are copies (maybe even the same ones) on ebay but they've been hit and miss with the internals. They are great, I love them.
Hey, what kinda tires are those?? I've been looking for a set of tires, if anyone makes them anymore, with a tread pattern like the old Mickey Thompson baja claws. Tread pattern kinda like a tractor. Had a set of yokohama geolandar at2s that where almost identical and they discounted them too!
Maxxis Trepador Radials, great for offroad but because they are directional they cant be rotated, bummer for people who just want to run them down the road. I love em'
Excellent video. A huge amount of important data, in a video only 12:14 long. Amazing.
Much appreciated!
NICE...would like to do that to mine.
Attempting to make a 650l into a desert capable bike. Will need to aftermarket an oil cooler. What suggestions might you have
Justin from @bajaeveryday8673 is your guy with the 650L in the desert. You'll even be able to jump on a ride at the Oasis!
Don’t the mouses overheat? I thought they were only good for slower off-road wouldn’t imagine desert riding/dual sport with longer open speeds
Good point. Dono, I've been flogging them but need to deal with them soon. I don't even know if those battered rims will hold tubes. Actually the biggest concern is If you leave the bike parked on them they deflate on that spot and its like riding with a square tire. Racers either get a new set every tire change or the tire & rim sit on a rack between pits - Say you get a deal and pay $125 each for tires and mousses, imagine spending $500+ every time you smoke a tire 😮. Bro they are amazing, I'm not going to lie, but I'm hungry and happy with my Maxxis Deserts & HD tubes.
I run Nitromousses and they last awhile. It is important to keep wedging them so that they don't get overly loose as they wear.
Don’t run mousses on anything other than a track. They aren’t designed for anything else, no what what someone says about running nitromousses that last a little bit longer. It’s not designed for the speed or for what you’re doing off a MX track. Just get a heavy duty tube.
Might be worthwhile to also take a paint marker to all the bolts so you have an easy visual indicator if something's backing off.
Because I bounce between wheels I have the opportunity to check the torque (without air) before I mount them & they were good before I left... dang man, Scary. I've been talking to a few TT teams and they run anywhere between 30-50 psi. They all say get your own bolts and change them out every major prep. I should do a follow up video on this.
Man that bumper idea was great!
THX for the feedback. Someday I'll try it again now that I can weld faster, maybe a giveaway or something!
How are you liking the 450rx? I have a 2019 crf450r and the bike is great other than the gearbox and i believe the rx has the same or similar. I'm thinking about either selling the bike or tearing it down this winter to drop in the 450L or 450x six speed. I mean the crf450r gearbox is so close ratio it is insane. You can barely crack the throttle between shifts. If I'm riding hard I get less than a second in between shifts. That gets old, not to mention I had to gear it to the moon to be able to ride it down the road without it screaming.
Yea, I was just going to say gear it up to stretch it out. There is alot more different between the r/rx & x/l platform. The X is plush and has a flatter torque curve (L is even more so) where the r/rx is a dang rocket in the band but has zero grunt. I find the X challenging to ride single track on, I always want to keep shifting but I need to remember that it has the rrr's to wind up between curves without clicking around. I've settled on the X, I love it for what I do, It's a good all around bike. Especially with that engine build, its like the XR650R with all the torque now, and has 6 gears!!!
Well yeah... The R is a dedicated track bike
Interesting comparison vid. Love the XRR in the desert... where she was born and bred! A joy if you're moving... a challenge when the going gets tough, but like you say: they will tractor up anything (the rider is always the weakest link)! FWIW, we have mounted fans on ours, but it's never really been critical. Even if she bubbles a bit, she's still not unhappy. I gather you are running the light on the XRR straight from the Stator with no battery in between?
Yes, on that bike the stator has been rewound so it has a dedicated lighting circuit and the light with regulator/rectifier runs directly off that. It flickers on idle because its a squadron pro but you can just needle the idle up if it starts to give you epilepsy while trying to map out the trail :O other wise just punch it!
Gearing on the XRR?
Stock is 100 MPH easy; 20% up gives you less top end actually (that's the 96 mph video) but cruises much better down the highway and still gets up the hills with a tad more clutch.
Ooookeeeeeey now! I really need a parts lis for this results please!!
Mostly a basic four link but with the custom coil buckets. So far these are the only set but they're pretty straight forward to make. One day I'll be able to just make 10 of everything 🤞
"find a level spot"... to kick start. jajajajaja, i have one.. i know the felling.
😎 lol, its not even that bad but it is a breaker 😂
What offset are the wheels? I’m looking to get a set for my excursion
Tow wheels: 20x10 with -18mm offset; 17x8.5 with -25mm offset. Both are a bit out of the wheel wells, but the 05-08 axels are also wider than the Factory set.
great video! do you run any fans on the ol xr650r or have you ever felt the need to?
I don't but that's because the BRP is the wrong bike for the tight stuff. It has plenty of mass (and fluid volume) to stay cool while walking up even the biggest hills but it likes to be to opened up after to get some air. As for trying to sit idling at street lights or whatever, I forgot to say, even if you keep the cylinder & oil temps down with a fan, the header pipe will be glowing red hot in pretty short time - I wonder how the L's get away with it, maybe that emissions thing bypassed a bunch of cooling air into the exhaust?
Please show me how u mounted the winch!
It started like the Warn hid-a-winch but got cut and shaved to be as minimal as possible.
You might think about a TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) There are a few good ones out there and you can install the sensors on a large hose clamp in the center of the wheel. This might give you some advanced warning when you start to lose a little bit of pressure on a wheel to check the bead.
That's a great idea, they have those blue tooth stem cap ones too. No Excuse!
I’m having this same issue on my 2018 Duramax, I keep having failure after failure, I’m definitely going to be trying the spacer’s because I’m out of ideas! Where did you get your spacers from?
Got the spacers from the wheel manufacturer, Raceline in this case. Definitely questioning the thickness - no spacer perhaps to much of a gap but 1/8" spacers don't seem to hold more than 30 psi of air. I will do an update this summer once we beat it some more :)
It’s it’s all over the road you need a rear sway bar. Mine didn’t have a sway bar when I got it. It was undeliverable. Put a f350 heavy duty rear sway bar and it was All gone.
Yea man, gotta be balanced for sure!
Would pay to see a video of your winch install..... how you mounted it. What mods were required
I might have some footage, Let me check the archive. No mods to the frame or anything, just the bumper. Similar to the Warn Hide a winch but without the fire truck bumper look when its all in there.
Great video! Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
So beadlocks didnt fail
Didn't even loose pressure, missing bolts was the only warning.
That Biden clip got an instant like. Also, awesome approach to the suspension. I'm considering an ex and would totally want to do it like this.
Welcome aboard! I'm pretty neutral on the scale but when you set your self up to be in the spotlight, expect to get roasted 😆
@@owlclaw 💯 I wanted a diesel 'scursion so badly, but they are so expensive that I gave up hope. Then I came across this guy's Tahoe SAS and due to the lower cost, bought an '04 Tahoe and am going to start the swap as soon as ski season ends (SLC area). I'm gonna try for 37s since the 35s fit his really well with minimal trimming. You guys are truly an inspiration. Thanks for sharing with the rest of us. www.youtube.com/@tahoverlanding/videos

What would take it off your hands?$$$
Lots of persuasion 😆. Not because I couldn't part with it or I think its worth a million bucks, but because I'd have to go through all the growing pains of finding that perfect recipe again on the next build. DM me and lets chat about it if your serious, better yet book a flight and we can go pound on it! owlclawfab@gmail
Dude! Your too goofey genius for me. I have a 2001 Excursion Limited, 6.8L V10. Its got the same color scheme as yours. I love it and am trying to slowly rescue and restore it. But you've gone to the SUPER EXTREME! I never seen a Rock-Crawler Excursion EVER!! I'd be happy with some new wheels, tires, and coilover shocks. Throw me a response if u ever wanna sell yours though😎👍
Everything is for sale 😎 Just got back from a trip, the mind boggling thing is that it still tows like a dream. Jacob@Chesna.us Thanks for reaching out!
