Hello, my name is Fred. At my job, vacation days are called PTO Days - Personal Time Off. Since I spend most of mine outdoors, I refer to it as "Personal Time Outdoors." I like Backpacking, Camping, and Hiking. In addition to sharing my trip videos, one of my goals with this channel is to share information with you that will make it easier for YOU to visit the same locations. I hope that the information I share will allow you to spend some of your PTO outdoors as well.

My misguided search for a BUDGET sleeping pad
I discuss the steps (and missteps) I made trying to save a few bucks on a sleeping pad for backpacking. I made numerous purchases that I later regretted until I finally found the right solution. The pads I discuss in this video are the infamous Walmart blue foam mat, a military surplus self inflating pad, the Outdoorsman Lab sleeping pad, the Klymit Static-V Lite Insulated, and the REI Helix.

In this video I demonstrate the Android smartphone app that I use for GPS navigation when backpacking. The app is called GPS Waypoints Navigator. I consider this a budget minded solution because there are no monthly or yearly subscriptions to use this app. There is just a one time fee to purchase the full version.

Nice video. Very informative. I think I have gone through the exact same type of mats as you have in the order you explained them.
Thank you for your comments and for watching the video.
thanks for sharing your learning on all these sleep mats, hope you get many comfortable nights ahead
Seems like I have it figured out now. 😄 Thanks so much for watching the video!
Klymit is a brand that cannot go away fast enough. I was fooled into buying one of their lies when they first came out. Lesson learned.
I've done this and continue to do this too, there's no shame in it at all.
Right, it's all a learning process.
Buy once cry once works if you know what you're getting. Problem is you don't know until you use it if it is good for you, or it is what you were looking for.
That is one good thing about buying from REI. They have a really accommodating return policy. If you try something and it isn't working for you it can be returned no questions asked for up to a year if you're a member .
As a large side sleeper, I have only ever been happy with the standard air mattress. I really would like to find a more durable and packable option (I have had to patch an air mattress straight out of the box and had to break out the duct tape to get through the rest of a night 🤦🏻♂️) All that and it was still better than my gigantic $100+ self inflating mattress that packed up larger than my tent 🤷🏻♂️. I understand that comfort isn’t always an option but people have woken up with permanent injuries after ignoring what their body was telling them. I have often wondered if any of the mat makers have considered contoured mats built specifically for the 200lb + side sleeper crowd.
Thermarest has a new pad out, I think it's called the neoloft or something like that. It's pretty thick and still packs down reasonably small. I wonder if that might be an option. I'm sure it's pricey though....
So going cheap you ended up spending way more than if you just purchased a high quality high r-value pad the first time . Buy once cray once quality is remembered long after price is forgotten
Right, I tried to save a buck and it ended up costing me more in the end. Certain gear items you can go budget but a sleeping pad isn't one of them. Unless you only camp in the middle of summer.
My first inflatable pad was an Exped DownMat9. Heavy, bulky, $$$$$, r-8, totally worth it, like sleeping on a cloud.
Nice! It is actually kind of amazing how well these modern pads work. The technology that they've developed to insulate is something else...
Very amusing video that I can relate to lol. I have painful memories of car camping with the closed foam. Tried the self inflating for first backpacking trip, was doable, but left much to be desired. Settled for the budget Paria Recharge. Didn’t take as many steps as you but, the Helix is a good one.
Sounds like you figured it out faster than me! 😂
I know the missteps very well.I now strap a cheap folding pad strapped under my exos48 bag. Also gives extra protection of piercing my inflatable pad,so far so good.
That's one fear I always have in the back of my mind.. something putting a hole in it. I take the included patch kit and a little tenacious tape with me. Hopefully one of those would bail me out if it happened.
Definitely a buy once cry once type of thing.
Yes, I have to agree. Especially if you will be camping in colder weather.
I am a big fan of doing it on the cheap. Sadly the one thing you cant avoid is a decent mat if camping in colder weather. I went with the Nemo Tensor. Great mat and small pack size.
@@jim-bob-outdoors Yes, it is striking the difference the right mat makes.
Young
Thanks for watching
Good job breaking down the journey to one of the most important parts of camping!!!
Thanks, I appreciate you watching the video!
i got the termarest 7.3 never buy a noder pad. thx Bro. Greetings from Swizerland.
I've heard that's the warmest pad out there but it's pricey. I bet in Switzerland you have some pretty cold temps at times though so it's probably worth it.
Everything's a trade off. I use an inflatable with a yoga matt. 😆
The yoga mat probably rolls up a little smaller than my blue foam pad. Doubling things up definitely works if you are ok with carrying it
Wait until you see the prices for Hammock under and over quilts.
I'm sure. Any kind of down quilt that's decent will cost you. I've just never been interested in hammock camping for some reason. Maybe it's "old dog, new tricks" syndrome 😄
@@personaltimeoutdoors It has it's own set of pros and cons to be sure. And a learning curve.
Thanks, nice review! 😊
Thank you. I appreciate your comments!
fantastic, thumbs up 👍🍀✨
Thanks for checking out the video!
Nice loop. Always enjoy the ANF!
Yes the ANF is very underrated. It really has a lot to offer.
I’m glad you made it out. It sure was a fun weekend. You got some great shots of Hanson’s Point
Thanks! I will say that no photo or video I've ever seen does Hanson's Point justice. You have to see it in person to really get the full understanding of just how awesome it is.
@ I agree 100 percent
It was great meeting you friend!!! Good video showing how we all barely knew eachother but came back home with another family!!!
I agree and I think it will be interesting at the next one since people know each other a little better now.
Hey Fred! Glad you made the trip down. It was great meeting you!
Thanks! I had a blast and really enjoyed meeting all of you as well.
Thank you for a very good review. I am 68 and getting back into winter backpacking. I will start hiking about 5 miles per day with a pack weight of 30 lbs (including food and water). As I go I will slowly increase the distance of my hikes.
That's fantastic! Hope you enjoy it and thanks for watching the video.
It was great meeting you as well. We didnt know anyone either but it was definitely worth the trip
Absolutely! I especially liked hearing the tips and suggestions people had about different trails and backpacking locations.
The ohio state updates were great.
Lol.. too bad the game didn't end so well
Brilliant tent for one person with bags. Can be put up inner or outer first if using footprint. The green 20D cost in UK between £135 to £155
I haven't tried putting the outer up first yet. I can see that it would be fairly simple to do though.
@@personaltimeoutdoors In June I had 2 weeks cycle camping in France. The fly was wet every morning so took inner down first and put in pod bag just take a little longer
Nice, sounds like a great trip!
It was a good trip. My cycling buddy tried my tent and bought the same he's over 6ft tall. 3 mods we did. 1/ put 4 inch bungies on footprint and inner tent 2/ "Use the cords you take off on the zips 3/ bought longer pegs of same design as a lot of our campsites are soft grass. A few extra grams isn't a problem on a bike. @@personaltimeoutdoors
@@davidanness6180 I was trying to think of something to replace the fabric zipper pulls with. They just don't work that well. Do using the cords make them work more smoothly?
Enjoyed hanging out with you Fred!
Thanks Brian, I enjoyed talking to you and Glen as well.
No veggies?? 🤭
We ate them in the car with our lunch.🥕
wooly aphids where the dancing bugs, some folks call them tree lice
Ahhh..thanks for letting me know. They were interesting to watch to say the least.
johny cake is one of my favorites camping spots in the ANF
I can see why. Great views and nice campsites!
was great to meet you!!! such a great weekend. I had to break out of my comfort zone, I've never camped with folks i don't know either. I'm so glad I did.
Great to meet you too! I'm glad I talked myself into going as well.
I agree about being able to reserve…it is about a 2.5hr drive for me and besides the Buckeye Trail there would not a lot of other options if there were no sites open. I’ve also heard a lot of stories about people still showing up to your site even if you did book for that very reason. However, I still really want to see it in person and will just have to take the chance one of these days. Thanks for sharing!!
Just about everyone I ask says that would happily pay a fee to reserve a site. Wish they would consider it. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great information especially for a video format. Mohican is one of the few in Ohio I haven’t made it to yet. Just subbed…thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the sub! Mohican is really nice, worth the trip but avoid the weekends if you want to try for a park and pack site. It's also a great place to day hike.
@@personaltimeoutdoors actually ended up going yesterday and had a great backpacking trip there with my daughter. Pretty much had our pick of any site but when I looked at the check in sheet I definitely saw what you’re saying about weekends being busy. Your video was very helpful in planning the trip. Thanks again!
@@JourneyontheTrail That's awesome! Glad you guys had a good time.
Explorer is kinda heavy. I replaced mine with a Decathalon that weighs a kg less and is cheaper. The teton can take a beating though, I used it for years and dropped it down giant cliffs
You're right, nobody is ever going to mistake these for ultralight packs. They are definitely on the heavy side.
superb video!
Thanks so much for watching!
Great video! I just got back from this area about a week ago so maybe about a week after you were there? Water levels were very low for June. Looks like you backpack a lot of the same areas I go to. I can confirm that you can park at the Seneca Creek trailhead. Looking forward to watching more of your content!
Thanks for watching! I'll be checking out some of your videos. Looks like you've been to a few places I don't know much about.
@@personaltimeoutdoors I like mixing in some lesser known areas. The more popular areas I like to hit during the week like you did in this video.
@@OutdoorOperator I understand that. Nothing worse than struggling to find a campsite during a crowded weekend.
Good review, keep them coming.
Thanks for watching!
You had the entire forest to yourselves. Very Nice!
For the most part. Going during the week has it's advantages. On the first day we only saw 4 people the whole day. On day 2 we saw maybe 5 or 6. The day we were hiking out was a Friday and we started seeing more people on their way in. I definitely believe that area gets more crowded on the weekends.
Nice video.
Thanks, I appreciate you watching!
Nice to see that you too are out and about on the trails relaxing thank you again for the nice video always glad to see them Now if you excuse me I'm going to go and finish watching then I have to hit the bed 3:30 comes fast That's 3:30 a.m.
Thanks so much for watching, I appreciate your comments! That 3:30 doesn't sound too fun.
First 🥇
👍
Very useful thanks.
Thanks for watching. I appreciate the feedback!
Here in the UK..we have loads of options. American gear tends to be over priced and under performance..
Ok, thanks for commenting about that. The cottage company gear made in the US is definitely pricey. Was my guess that the naturehike tents are popular in the UK correct? I'm only basing that on what I've seen on UA-cam which is admittedly a small sample size.
Like what exactly I'm in the market 😊
I'd recommend checking out summit or nothing on YT. He reviews a bunch of different tents and he's in the UK.
Not sure $130 is very "budget"
If you look at the weight vs the price then I think it is a good price for a free standing tent. Yes, there are many tents that cost less but they will come at a weight penalty. Even with this tent, you can get the polyester version for $90 or less but it is a pound heavier.
Probably will never make it there, but your information regarding camping in the park was very well done.
Thanks, I appreciate you watching!
How do they do these utube rondavues when it says max 6 per site .how bad is it when digging cat holes as far as digging up you know .thanks .
I've never been to one of those YT meetups but I'm guessing they are just kind of ignoring that rule. Each site has a sign with a "moon" symbol on it that is supposed to designate the cat hole area. Apart from the sign, the area isn't really defined. To be honest, I had the same thought as you and was afraid to go digging in that area, lol. I only had to dig one and I just wandered deep off the trail instead. The moon sign by site 4 was right next to a really steep drop off anyway. I don't see how it would be a good idea to climb down there to dig a cat hole.
Looks like ohio lumberd it out .i think they are going to drill in it next year so they will close it again.
They did remove a lot of the fallen trees to keep it from becoming a forest fire hazard.
Good initial review. looking forward to your final review
Thanks, I will post an update after I feel like I've had enough nights in it.
How much is it…?
The 20D version I have is usually around $130 on Amazon. Often times you can save $15 to $20 if you order through Ali Express. The polyester version is cheaper so you just have to read carefully to make sure you are buying the version you want.
Young man you know you have to drive an hour to have to get down there it's not a waste of time You still have the buckeye trail down that way You can still do a loop and camp out for one to two nights A lot of people forget about the buckeye trail down that way
Guilty as charged. I would have never thought about the buckeye trail. I always thought it was more around the perimeter of Ohio.
