A Huge Transformation !
This tree is now looking fantastic.
In part 2 I repot the tree in to some of my bonsai soil mix removing the unsightly roots and bending the trunk into a new position which better suits the tree complementing the overall style.
What an improvement.
I hope you all enjoy this video. If you do please give it a thumbs up.
Thank you for watching.

Wiring transforms my Larch in to a Bonsai.
Переглядів 2839 годин тому
In this video I work on my Grey pearl larch which is a Japanese dwarf larch. With a bit of wiring we can transform this Larch in to a decent bonsai tree ready to be added to my collection. This is a grafted tree, so the graft isn't the greatest and in the future I will have to do something to to reduce the size of the swelling. For now a good styling with wire and some basic movements in the br...
Twin trunk January styling.
Переглядів 17816 годин тому
Chinese Elms are so much fun to work on and own you can style them however you'd like. This one is my Twin Trunk which needs some work as its a bit over grown from last year. Time to give it the first styling of the year and get it set ready for the spring, when I can then do some root work and get it in the the pot I've got marked for it. I hope you enjoy the video.

Ill give you an update on the latest storm we've just had, what damage it caused this time around and ill do an update on how the trees are fairing now the storm has passed. Spring really needs to get here soon. I've had enough of this awful weather. Enjoy the video everyone.
A Hidden bonsai behind all this growth.

A Chinese Elm makes a great Bonsai tree for all levels of experience, they lend themselves beautifully to all Bonsai styles too. In this video I'll be working on my S shaped Elm which has been left to grow for some time now and is in need of a trim as I cant tell the front from the back. Once I've pruned the tree you will be able to see the hidden gem behind the bush. Enjoy the video and please...
How should I air layer my larch Bonsai ?
Переглядів 21014 днів тому
My small Larch that I picked up from the bonsai boot sale is doing well and just needs a prune, but I really need to make a decision on were the air layer should be. I still cant decide and would like some inspiration from the comments. So today we talk about the future of the tree and do some pruning to set it up for the potential air layering in the spring. Enjoy the video and please give me ...
Finally knowing how I'm going to develop my Ebay Chinese Elm!
Переглядів 49621 день тому
I finally made a decision how I'm going to style and develop this tree going forward. I've always said there are two trees here, so I think I'm going to treat it as such and prepare it for an air layer in the future. In this video Ill give a detailed prune and talk on how, where and why I I feel this is the best decision, I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching. Chinese Elm from a ro...
Pyracantha styling and progression Jan 25

My Pyracantha is a little out of shape and needs some attention. Lets make some cuts and get it back on track, as it sure doesn't look tidy right now. With a few detailed cuts and a bit of care this Pyracantha will be on its way to looking set ready for some spring growth and a new pot to help it on its development journey. Переглядів 17428 днів тому
The snow still hasn't left us and its as cold as ever with the temperature at -2 but I need to get the trees all pruned up on time, at least that's the goal. My poor little Apple I've been growing from seed has frozen over in the corner, I best give it some love and attention that way I know its ready for the spring repot I have planned. Enjoy the video and don't for get to hit that like button.
Snow Day Again In The UK! Weather Warnings!
Переглядів 146Місяць тому
We've had weather warnings over here in the UK this weekend and now we are left with floods and lots of snow. My trees are looking very chilly with a lovely carpet of white snow left on them but nothing to worry about as they are all fine. I'll give you a nice update on them all in this video so enjoy and please like the video if you liked the video.
Hornbeam bonsai needs some attention before it gets any worse in the apex!
Переглядів 305Місяць тому
In todays video I will be working on my Hornbeam I repotted earlier on in the year in to the larger pot its now in. Th e pond basket it was previously in was to small and slowed its growth putting the tree back by a couple of years. An obvious error on my part which I have now rectified with the larger pot. With the larger pot came more growth and unfortunately the growth has gone wild on one b...
Correcting the issues with my £50 Privet!
Переглядів 356Місяць тому
The £50 Privet has recovered well from the root prune it had in the spring. Now its winter most of the leaves have fell off showing the branch structure in all its glory. Well its showing all that's wrong and that needs attention. With that in mind some detailed corrective work needs to take place today, removing crossing branches, branches leading to swelling and a good all round tidy up. So j...
From a root cutting to a bonsai tree!
Переглядів 673Місяць тому
Today I'll be working on this root cutting I took from one of my other larger Chinese Elms. After 2 years I now have a tree which is looking pretty good. I have established branches and the root itself is now thickening up and making a great trunk. Today is all about bringing the tree inline as I have allowed it to grow out to gain health and vigor. The tree has long branches and has grown too ...

Small Japanese Maple has an issue that needs correcting for its future benefit.
Переглядів 678Місяць тому
This small Japanese Maple I've been working on has now developed an issue that I need to correct for the good of the tree. To become the best Bonsai it can be in the future I need to remove the section that goes against the rules set for a good stylistic bonsai. Please enjoy the video and leave a comment. Thank you for watching.

Looks great Chris the tree will be slow to bounce back but after this year should be good 👊
Man I hope so. Worried about the root system but I have lots of spagnam moss in my mix to aid recovery. Got to make them bold decisions some times eh. I'll do an update come spring.
Lots of roots taken - hopefully the tree has enough energy stored in the trunk :)
Yeah. You know what it's like when the roots are all bad.🫣 I couldn't stop. My soil has spagnam moss in it so I'm hoping it helps. I'm risking it on this one.
Tbh Chris I will be very surprised if that tree survives hardly any root left hope it does prove me wrong keep us updated on it’s progress good luck buddy 🫶
I'm a bit concerned too. I went pretty hard on my forest and they all survived, so I'm hopeful. I will keep updated as always and I will do my best to help it thrive.
@ the only reason i said that a while ago I had a conversation with a guy in my Bonsai club he is expert on larches and told me larch trees root systems are a little different to a lot other trees the roots are very vascular and told me go easy when cutting back the roots it’s a slow process a bit each time you repot hope this information helps buddy 🫶
@pauletheridge7594 he seems like a very knowledgeable person. I'm still new to larchs and I'm still figuring them out. This info will do me well, thank you. Every day is a school day. ☺️👍🏼
first ;D
Oh yes 👍🏼
the white is sap residue, nothing to worry about, quirk of the species/variety. don't air layer it, very unlikely to succeed
Oh thanks for the info. I'm not sure I'm going to air layer it now. It's turning into quite a nice tree now it's wired up. ☺️
Looking out for part 2 😉
It's a good one 😁
An interesting wiring project. I do wonder if you can try and find a suitable rock or deadwood stump that you can slide into that initial bend to give the impression the tree has grown around it? It's a tough one but still makes ofr fun viewing :)
Thanks for watching Xavier, you will just have to wait for part 2 on Sunday to find out if a rock is my solution 😁
Nice!
Thanks 👍🏼
i don’t have any larch and this is making me want to get one 😂 lovely wire work mate
Thanks fella 😁 they are perfect material to work with when wiring.
Looks great Chris 👊👊
Part 2 is out on Sunday. I finish it off it looks fantastic. Keep an eye out fella 😜
Maybe incorporate a rock in the planting with this tree. If you give that tree a reason to have grown that way it could possibly work out.
That's not a bad idea Kevin but it's not the direction I want to take this tree. I see larch as big strong trees and a rock will take that away from the tree later in life. Plus I really just don't like the roots. It's a shame as the tree is needing an air layer in my opinion to make it right.
Shame about the leader Chris. Great job other than that 😂😂😂😂
Cheers Andy. Knowing the Chinese Elms it should soon grow back. I hope 😂
Thx for sharing
@zen-da-bonsai-ko your welcome 😁
Really enjoyed the video tour. Lots of really nice trees and pots. Wish I had a source for good bonsai and pots where I live. By the way the tree at 32:13 looks to be a Japanese Quince, possibly a chojubai??
A Japanese quince! Thanks 😊. Were do you live? This show was awesome. I can't wait for the next one, there were so many good examples, even the trade stalls had fantastic trees to offer.
Lol. You’re the new weather man.
I sure feel like it. I think I'll apply for a new job at the local weather station 🤣
Be careful if you go down the polycarbonate route, the bottom half of mine is mainly wooden panels and all the panels have been duck taped into place after been blown out during bad weather wouldn't recommend ,glad your trees escaped too much damage
Thanks Jonny. I always had my heart set on a glass greenhouse. I think I'll do my research and spend the money and get a good solid one.
you need to get an Anderson shelter! 🤣🤣🤣
More like an air raid shelter 🤣
Im about to make myself a wooden frame greenhouse, and use polycaebonate for panels, it may not look prettiest but it will be heavy enough to withstand the wind
Make sure you reinforce them panels, they have a tendency to get blown out. That's why I'm going to a good old fashioned glass house.
@bonsaiexpression unfortunately my neighbours glass greenhouse with aluminium frame was completely chewed up in the storm. Wasnt even a year old. Polycarbonate panels are easy to replace and relatively cheap. The wood will stop the whole thing coming down. These big storms are going to be more frequent
@sherylsschoolofgardening6327 fair enough. Might be the best way to go then. 🤔
Good excuse for a green house dude 👊👊
😁😁
Nice curves 😉
Nice shape and movement. Good job.
Cheers Bill. This is going to be a great tree come the growing season 😁
That’s a beefy Chinese Elm. Elms are slowly turning into one of my fav trees as well. This one went from quite shaggy to looking amazing. Great work, my friend.
Cheers Dave. I love Elms I wish I had a couple of traditional English Elms for the collection and a cork bark too. 😁 See what this year's boot sale brings 👍🏼
@ I hope you can track one down!
Hopefully 🍀
Nice work 👍🏻
Thanks Darren ☺️
Nice Chris 👊
😁😁
YESSS. My favorite, the chinese elm. Well done!
Thank you my friend. There great trees 👍🏼
Definatly airlayer great way to go. I'm no expert but have had bonsai for 30+ years. Your instinct is good well done 👏
Thanks for the kind words 😊
Definitely air-layer the straight part off -- it's like two different trees, but leave the fancy root base on the main. It's interesting. Maybe even encourage more roots from that knob. I like to work with what I have and not try to turn apples into oranges.
Running with what I got 👍🏼 keep it simple. Thanks man.
Two options for me. If you want the twin trunk approach then I would airlayer just below the juntion of the two trunks making it almost a clump base. If you want the two trees then airlayer as you suggest but I would try and go for a cascade on the lower trunk and use the roots as a feature taking the tree down. Always difficult to assess from video but that would probably be my approach. Cheers
I was pondering a cascade. Do larch lend themselves well to cascade Xavier?
@@bonsaiexpression I have seen quite a few of them and have two semi cascade on the go
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat I'll take a look . Thanks Xavier
Tbh if it was mine i would ground layer it to get a beautiful twin trunk. Similar to airlayer but with limited space more achievable
The more I look at it the more I'm thinking that to but. What about jin-ing the branch up wards. As if it's been struck by lightning ⚡⚡
@bonsaiexpression definitely a possibility... im not convinced maybe do a scetvh or photo edit and see. Tbh it would make a great twin trunk with natural lines
@@sherylsschoolofgardening6327 good idea 💡
Cool Chris good luck with it 👊👊
Thanks dude I think I'm going to need it 😂
I’d try and keep the cut root in same pot and see if I could grown another larch seeing its already established in that pot
I think that's a good idea. Go for a possible 3rd tree. I like 😍
good video thanks. My preference would be to keep it as one tree, maybe taking a bit more off at some point, maybe have another look at it see what you think.
The swelling is too great at the base of the new tree. Which is why I was aiming for a broom style for the lower half of the tree. I talk about this in the previous videos on the playlist if you would like to check them out, They are available ☺️. This is why it's taken me so long to make a decision as to what to do with this tree. Other than that I could chop all the lower branches off, grow the great out then do the air layer. 🤔
Please show us the air layering process. It will be interesting how you will go about it with only a short trunk to work with.
Don't worry Mick, I definitely will be showing as I've absolutely no experience in air layers so it will be an experience I definitely want to put on film.
I think air layering it is a good call. I hope it’ll take for you. Good prunes here! It looks great.
Cheers Dave. I'm excited to see the outcome too. I don't see it not working to be honest. It is a Chinese Elm and they love punishment. 🤣
Nice Chris 👊👊👊
This one is going to be a good tree once I split them 👍🏼
Great work! That little Elm is looking good! An excellent foundation for future development.
Thanks Martin. I can't wait to air layer the top tree and get it going as it's own tree 😁
Hope you have a great 2025 my fellow bonsai friend
You too fella. 😁
Excellent work. It looks nice and streamlined now.
Thanks Dave 😁
Thx for sharing
Thank you for watching ☺️
what a lovely little tree! good work mate 🫡
Thank you. Hopefully I'll get some more back buds too and I can start looking at making those branches less straight and get some more movement in them with a bit of clip and grow. 😊
You have some good material for cuttings there. They strike so very easily, even thick pieces. Just stick the cuttings in any soil and more often than not they will root. I have loads that have rooted from cuttings.
I didn't know they were that easy to root. I might give it ago when I do another round of pruning. Thanks for the advice Mick. 👍🏼
Nice Chris 👊👊
Thanks Andy 😁
looking very cold 🥶
Indeed. After I finished filming I decided to keep the little thing inside for a few nights. The weather has started to get back into positive digits now so I'm moving it back outside today. 😁 No more snow or cold temps for a while
Good stuff, my friend. I hope you feel better soon!
Cheers Dave. That burrito made me feel better today 😋
@ heck yeah! I’m actually eating tacos here tonight … you inspired me to make them. 🤣
@dreamingofbonsai ummmmm I'm hungry again now 🤤
@@bonsaiexpression hahaha! You’ll have to track down a late night spot to get some more burritos! 🤣
@dreamingofbonsai I think it's early morning now 🤣
Nice Chris mate a bit cold for it bro
I've brought it into the plant room to chill until the end of the week. The weather is going back to 10 degrees so I wanted to be ahead of the game 😁

We're burning up here in California. 😟
Hope you're ok over there.
Hi Chris, Thanks for the winter update. And happy birthday! Are you really 40? I genuinely thought you were about 25!
Hi Martin thanks for watching and thanks for the birthday wishes. Yes I am 40. 😊 Must be them Peter Pan genes 🤣
Happy Birthday, man! I’ll be hitting the big 40 in 2026 … so I’m right behind you! 😂 Nice winter tour, stay warm over there! Best wishes from the other side of the Atlantic!
Thanks for the birthday wishes Dave. You don't look almost 40 either 😊. Good ol' Peter pan genes. Thanks Dave the weather is awful now. I'm sick of it. Roll on spring. 😁
We also have snow in Belgium this evening ⛄️
I hope you guys cope with it better than we do. Everyone panics over here like they've never seen it before 🤣
Trees are looking good Chris you are going to be busy growing season Happy 40th buddy life begins at 40 lol 😂 🫶
Thanks Paul They are all doing well. Letting them all grow wild this year has done them well. Thanks for the birthday wishes. I sure hope so it starts at 40 as I don't feel 40 🤣
Good decisions... but not sure what to think about the lowest right branch ... since he's coming from the inside of a curve 🤷♂️
It's on the outside of the curve not the inside. It's where the root was chopped. My only concern with it, is maybe it's too straight?
