Bass and guitar covers of classic rock songs
Grand Funk Railroad - Comfort Me - Bass Cover
A great example of Mel’s smooth and powerful bass lines that totally make the song - especially as the song progresses toward the end!

Fabulous song that features some really melodic and creative bass lines by Gary Thain.
Utopia - Utopia Theme LIVE - Bass Cover

An epic live performance by Todd Rundgren’s Utopia, with amazing keyboard/synth and guitar work, and some fun bass lines. The song is long and keeps building all the way through. A really cool prog-rock classic from the early 70s.
Grand Funk Railroad - Just Couldn’t Wait - 1970 Mel Schacher style Bass Cover

My previous video was the original version of this song from 1976. For fun this is a cover of the same song but done in the style of how I imagine Mel might have played it in 1970 - in the early GFR years with the driving bass lines he was known for then. Let me know what you think.

Thought I’d do a cover from the last “real” GFR album which shows how tame Mel’s playing became compared to the first several albums. Although it’s tame there are still his trademark low climbing runs which always add to the flavor of their songs.
Chris Stapleton - White Horse - Guitar Cover

What a great tune this is. Had the pleasure of seeing him live a few weeks ago - truly an amazing talent and performer! This song live was crazy good so it inspired me to try to learn it!
Grand Funk Railroad - I Come Tumblin’ - Bass Cover (V2)

Even though I already have a cover of this tune on my channel, after playing it again recently I decided to do another cover and try to do the parts at the end of the song a bit more accurately, since there are some time signature changes that are pretty difficult to hang with. I’ve read where Mark said they did the songs on E Pluribus Funk with just 2 or 3 takes. After trying to figure this on...

A real rocker from AC with some awesome bass playing and licks by Dennis Dunaway!
Alice Cooper - I’m Eighteen - Bass Cover
Переглядів 2148 місяців тому
Simply put, one of the biggest rock anthems ever. And, to me, the bass lines form the major portion of the overall sound of the song. Dennis Dunaway’s creative approach in how he adds additional layers to each verse (adding in fifths and later adding in octaves) makes this an iconic bass line. I love how it build through the song. What a great job he did on the original AC early albums!

Man, that's one PRETTY looking J-Bass. I'm a Precision guy myself, but you can never go wrong with a Tuxedo Jazz with all the old school hardware. Great cover of a good tune... Your tone is right on!
Hi Joe! Thanks so much for watching and for the comment! I’ve only had two basses - the first was a P-Bass and now this J-Bass (74 American Vintage). Kind of amazing how they are so similar in build yet so distinct in their sound huh? Both great, just different! Thanks again for the comment. I have dozens of GFR covers on my channel if you want to check them out. Cheers! Andy
Great job! I want to learn this song , any idea where to find the tabs.
Hi David - thanks for your comment. I don't know of any tabs. I just did my best to figure it out by ear. You might be able to figure most of it out by watching the video - if there's any questions you have on any specific parts or details, let me know and I'll be happy to help out as much as I can. Isn't this simply a monster song bass-wise? Mel was amazing on the first 5-6 albums! Thanks again! Cheers! Andy
cool
Thanks! Appreciate your comment! Fun song to play! Cheers! Andy
I was 14 when I heard this song Still gives me goosebumps even now . Love GF R❤🍁 good job& good taste in music, cheers
Thanks so much for your comment! Totally agree about the song - an epic tune with a great sound and vibe. Thanks a bunch! Cheers! Andy
ótimo

not sure what the problem is - I can hear it when I listen to it. Apologies!
Good stuf!
Thanks Douglas! Appreciate your comment!! Cheers! Andy
Love the complexity of these base lines and what an amazing cover! Beautifully done. ♡
Aww thanks Les!!! ❤️
Nicely done!
Thank you so much! What a great song huh? One of the classiest guitar solos ever! Cheers! Andy
clássico...

Awesome job 👍🏽
Thanks so much! Appreciate you watching and your comment! Cheers! Andy
Hell yeah, great cover 😎🔥
Thanks for the kind comment! What a great song, like every tune on the first two sides of Chicago II. I have covers of all the songs on those first two sides on my channel if you want to check them out. Chicago was on fire at that point in their history IMO! Thanks again! Cheers! Andy
Beautiful bass! A '74? Love the song.. I listened to Utopia Live non stop as a kid..
Hi! Thanks for your comment! And yes, it’s a ‘’74 American Vintage Jazz! There are so many great live Utopia albums/DVDs out there. They were superb live! Thanks again! Cheers! Andy
well played! i love this song, i think ill try to learn it👍
Hi! Thanks for watching and for your kind comment! Would loved to have seen this performed live - that had to be quite a treat. I saw Utopia live in 1980 after the Adventures in Utopia album was released - it was a superb show. Lots of musical talent in that group of guys! Thanks again! Cheers! Andy
i really like the tabs or pacing at 4:00
Thanks for watching and for your comment! Cheers! Andy
yo ,nice!
Hey, thanks! Appreciate your comment! Cheers! Andy
Incredible! Just saw the Outlaws/Lynyrd for the first time and diving deeper, I ended up finding and falling in love with this song as well as So Long. Huge rock fan as a kid and looking to get my first electric guitar. Any tips for beginners starting out? Would love to be able to play this good someday and maybe one day, play this song.
Hi thanks for watching and for your comment! I agree that this is an amazing song - a great guitar anthem of sorts! Actually the entire Grey Ghost album is worth listening to if you haven't already - a diverse collection of great tunes and amazing playing. As for tips on getting your first guitar, if you know someone who plays and could go with you to a guitar store, they could help you pick out a guitar that has the kind of sound/tone that you might like, and more importantly make sure you get a guitar that is set up correctly so it plays easily and in tune. I've never taken a lesson - I've just been self-taught and figured things out on my own but I'm sure there are lots of teachers out there who can help you progress a lot faster than I did learning on my own! Hope this helps a bit! And thanks again for your comment! Cheers! Andy
When the bass starts I believe Mel plays triplets.
Thanks for watching and for your comment! Can you be more specific about where the triplets are? I will listen for that and see what I might have missed. Thanks a lot! Cheers! Andy
Yes.
Thanks for your comment! Cheers! Andy
One of the most underrated songs, I was thrilled and surprised when it was in an episode of "The Sopranos" years ago. Great cover!!
@@mistersamdi totally agree. One of the greatest tunes of the early rock and roll era with some of the best guitar solos ever. Didn’t know that factoid about the Sopranos! Thank you for your comment! Cheers! Andy
@@AJs-guitar-bass Yes, I had to look up the episode again, I believe it is season 4 episode 5. I remember they played it in the background of the scene where they are talking in a bar or nightclub.
@@mistersamdicool! I will have to look up that episode! Thanks!
Went to my 40th Cooper show last night. Song still sounds awesome. Great job here! Do you have a tab?
Wow 40 times! So it was a good show? I assume you probably saw him on the Brutal Planet and Dragontown tours?? Those were spectacularly good concerts! Thanks for your comment. I don’t have a tab - I just figure all these out by ear and play from memory! Thanks again - Cheers! Andy
@@AJs-guitar-bass first show was Welcome to my Nightmare. Saw almost every tour in the last 50 yrs. They were awesome in Austin. Flying home today.
Dude, you totally rocked this, but do not be afraid to show some emotion while you play! Let it out!,,,🤪
Great comment! Thanks for watching/listening. Haha, my wife tells me the same thing about other things in life! Lol! Man, when you have no talent like me, it takes a LOT of concentration to try to play a song like this! In all seriousness, it gives me such appreciation for musicians who can play these kinds of songs, showing a lot of emotion, and looking like it’s no big deal to physically play it. Pretty amazing! Thanks again for watching and for your comment. Isn’t this is great tune??!! Cheers! Andy
Love Grand Funk
Thanks for watching! Yeah GFR has always been one of my favorite bands. Cheers! Andy
Great job!
Ah thanks for the kind comment! Appreciate it! Such a great tune! Cheers! Andy
Perfectly played! Awesome man
Thanks a lot for your comment! I appreciate it! What an epic song huh?!! Certainly don’t make ‘em like this anymore! Thanks again! Cheers! Andy
Espléndido.
Gracias Roberto! Cheers! Andy
Thanks for this! You did a great song proud.
Thanks for the kind comment! This song is a great example of Billy G’s creativity. Interesting chord changes with arpeggios and lots of tasty touches thrown in that add so much to the sound. Learning it gave me an appreciation of how a song that sounded fairly straightforward actually has so many cool elements to it. Thanks again! Cheers! Andy
Jack Bruce wrote it. Mountain took it to another level.
Yep - true that!! Mountain was such an amazing musical force. Leslie West was one of a kind. Thanks! Cheers! Andy
YES SIR!!!!! Making Billy Crain proud of you!!!
Oh man! Thanks for the very kind comment! I'm so glad to hear that someone appreciates him and this song! This is one of the greatest guitar anthems that I'd guess a lot of people have never heard. Not only is the song and playing in it fabulous, but that whole album is so musical and creative. It's one you can listen to start to finish and just be amazed by the different styles and musicality of the various songs. I remember the first time I ever heard this song, I thought "man, I'd love to be able to play that"! It took a long time for a self-taught hack like me to even get close to being able to play it, but it's certainly fun to try! Thanks again! Cheers! Andy
I just came across this video, and I’m glad I did. Great job! I had the Grand Funk Survival album in high school, and I always preferred this version of the song over the Stones.
Thanks for your comment, and I gotta say I totally agree regarding preferring this version. I always thought it was much more powerful. I’m guessing you must be a TCU fan? I’m in Fort Worth (Aledo actually). Hope Sonny Dykes has a good season! I have a few other covers on my channel from Survival if you want to check them out…. Cheers! Andy
You nailed it! I bleed purple, along with my wife and 2 younger brothers. I will definitely check out your other covers from Survival.
Cool!
Thanks for your comment! I appreciate it! Cheers! Andy
Legit!
Thank you Scott! Mel knocked it out of the park on this song and it’s such a fun song to try to play - pretty good workout!! Thanks again, Andy
Well played!
Thanks for your comment Scott! I appreciate it! Cheers! Andy
Great rendition .... rock on!
Thanks Scott! Appreciate your comment! Great song and fun to play! Cheers! Andy

Jesus is indeed King of Kings and Lord of Lords! And He is coming back soon! Listen to my cover of Second Coming - pretty cool lyrics! Blessings to you! Andy

Thank you! Such a great tune - a lot of fun to try to play it. I appreciate your comment. Cheers! Andy
amazing cover!!!
Aww thanks so much for the kind comment! Appreciate it! Cheers! Andy
Love the sound, just a tad grittier than Eddie's, but I really like it.
Thanks for watching! Good observation- I had my tone set to a little higher gain than was probably accurate for Eddie’s tone. Appreciate your comment! Cheers! Andy
Sounded spot on, but I would have liked to hear your bass more. Keep rockin'!
Thanks for watching! I’m wondering what device you were listening on - it seems to make a big difference depending on what device is being used. Ear buds or a sound system seem to make the bass stand out more than just on a phone. Thanks for your comment! Cheers! Andy
Love this song. My band covered it in 1970 but shortened it to exclude some of the middle. 🤘 ^v^
Thanks! Yeah it is a really cool and creative tune! Cool bass lines too! 😀. Cheers! Andy
Great articulation and tone!
Thanks for the kind comment! Really catchy tune and a lot of fun to play! Thanks again! Cheers! Andy
é isso ai meu camarada...muito bom mesmo!!

valeu meu camarada ...
Thank you for your comment! Great song by GFR huh? Cheers! Andy
Amazing! My only complaint is turning your bass up just a tad! I mean that as a big complement cuz you’re right in the pocket!
Thanks for watching Thanks for the kind comment! I’m wondering what device you’re using to listen to it - each device seems to be different. When I listen through ear buds or Bluetooth speaker the bass seems quite prominent. So it may be that. Thanks again! Andy
@@AJs-guitar-bass you’re right! I need to run it through my monitors instead. I don’t know what I was thinking.
@@jacksonfritts2988 let me know how it sounds when you try that, and whether it helps a bit! Cheers! Andy
AJ, great sound on that Strat! Just saw Stapleton and Marcus King in Cleveland about a month ago. He didn't play this...people were screaming for it!
Thanks for the comment! I saw him, with Tedeschi Trucks Band and Marcus King in Fort Worth on June 15. He opened with White Horse - wow I'm shocked he didn't play it in Cleveland. I bet they were screaming for it - such a wonderfully constructed and great sounding song. Wonder why he didn't play it?? Here's a video of the Fort Worth concert somebody posted which has the opener included... ua-cam.com/video/D8tAYhHfz5M/v-deo.html
