Colorado High Country Air Tour
After an early morning flight from my home airport (KEIK - Erie Municipal) and an al fresco breakfast at the Creekside in Steamboat Springs, we load up the DA62 and take the scenic route home: north over the Mt Zirkel Wilderness, east over North Park to run south along the spine of the Rawah and the Never Summer ranges, then southeast over Rocky Mountain National Park and back to KEIK.

Lake Michigan Scenic Flight in the Diamond DA62
Переглядів 6582 місяці тому
We loaded up the DA62 with four adults and baggage, and our yellow Lab, Luna. After a fuel stop in Merrill, Wisconsin, we flew over Lake Michigan, the Straits of Mackinac and Mackinac Island en route to spending a few days with a friend at his island camp on Lake Huron. It was a beautiful day for flying. #slowvideo

On our way to Kerrville, Texas to view the eclipse, we stopped in Georgetown (KGTU) to fly an air-to-air photo mission with the Diamond DA62 as subject. Master aviation photographer, Glenn Watson had invited us to join him for the shoot. Before taking off, we held a safety briefing in the FBO’s conference room, and spent a few minutes catching up; I hadn’t seen Glenn or Kirk in years. After sho...

A beautiful mountain flight over the Continental Divide, made even more spectacular by the new snow from our Christmas storm and a scattered cloud layer that enhanced the play of light on the high ridges. High Country snow and clouds starts at 8:11.
Ice OnThe Divide

UHD 4K video. A fabulous winter scene unfolds as we run along the Continental Divide west of Boulder, Colorado. In 48 years of flying small planes in the Colorado Rockies, I've never seen the ridges coated with ice like this. My first outing with the new GoPro Hero 12 Black; battery life is much improved and the video it shoots looks great.

Presented in 4K UHD. After several days cooling our heels in Palmer, my wife and I tired of waiting for the weather to improve so we launched in the DA62 on cloudy morning, to see if we could get on top of the persistent overcast and make an aerial circumnavigation of Denali. We found a hole (in the wrong direction!) over the Chugach National Forest near Harvard Glacier and picked up an IFR cle...

A short video of our departure from Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport in the Diamond DA62. Watch for a yellow Spirit Airlines 737 cleared onto runway 07L as we depart on 07R. A good view of the 161st Air Refueling Wing's ramp; and the Spirit jet catches up and passes us as we turn south. #theaerialperspective #slowvideo

      I had a GoPro MAX 360 on the left wingtip, a GoPro Hero 12 Black on the right wingtip, and a GoPro Hero 10 Black in the cockpit for cockpit and ATC audio. I screwed up with the 12 by using the Linear lens setting, which in practice meant that it didn’t capture either the horizon or the eclipsed sun in level flight, and barely got both in frame when the plane was banked steeply. My bad…

    Very beautiful and relaxing video, Steve! Will the 62 hold altitude on one engine at 14,000 feet? I'm working on my MEL in a DA42 out of KBFI. Would be nice to rent a 62 one day. However, I think they are still too new and rare to be offered as rentals. But maybe soon. Best wishes for the new year!

    I noticed you go flaps up gear up at the same time. How do you think about what altitude to raise your flaps?

    • @SteveZimmermannAtHome
      @SteveZimmermannAtHome Рік тому

      Rotate 78 knots; positive rate, gear up; pitch for 90 knots; flaps up. Happens fast in this instance, at 1000’ MSL with a 20 knot headwind.

    • @SteveZimmermannAtHome
      @SteveZimmermannAtHome Рік тому

      The two actions are triggered by separate events: positive rate/gear up; accelerate to 90 KIAS/flaps up. In this case the two events followed one other very quickly, and the gear cycle takes longer than raising the flaps.

    Absolutely stunning scenes of the aspen meadows, reminds me of my college days in the Fall when I'd escape to the mountains after a long day in classrooms. Not exactly sanguine with flying directly into rising terrain, even in my turbo Mooney, though your DA-42 probably handles it fine. I'm just a nervous old CFI, I guess.

      The turbocharged V35 is smaller and lighter, and for a given fuel burn is faster…but the Diamond carries more people and stuff, is more comfortable, and has air con, onboard weather radar, and icing protection. All design is an exercise in balancing tradeoffs…
