We get HURRICANE prepared, but some sailors WEREN'T so lucky! - Boat Life
Fail to prepare, prepare to fail... we were pleasantly surprised to find that we had over prepared, because whilst Hurricane Beryl definitely tickled us in our anchorage with lots of rain, some wind, and some icky swell, the worst thing turned out to have been our nerves!
Not all were quite so fortunate.

Brilliant I can't stop laughing I just subscribed thanku best video 😂😂😂😂
@@sarahholmes7439 thank you so much! We are simultaneously embarrassed and yet far too proud of this one 😂
The Multiple anchor part is interesting. A lot depends on how heavy they are, over 100 pounds if your directly in a class 4. That was actually done by Captain Rick and I recommend you watch the four videos , but especially the first one. What he did was quite unique and saved him in a multi class 4 system, two hurricanes one after another direct hits ! Its the absolute most that can be done ! I'm not sure that any of the boats in Curaçaol made it . I don't think any of them did ! So good to find you, you have some really creative entertaining ways to make things work (The video just before this one, LOL). Also, I guess the UA-cam Computer God knew how important the Beryl story is to me.
mmmh dont understand if your crossing from europe/africa side to the americas you take the trade winds route which it does not have that kind of rough weather (big waves yes). Dont know about from the americas to scottland (follow the gulf stream currents or whatever they are called up north). As for seasickness the best cure is COLD! If you are COLD your NOT seasick look at the horizon not the waves the warmer you get the faster youll get seasick unless you have some serious "Sea Leggs" but hey got to make some drama if not its not youtube right!!
@sebell69 hey there! We crossed with the trade winds from Gran Canaria, going south towards level with Cape Verde, and in fact a little lower than that. The reason for being pushed so low south is covered within our crossing videos... an unseasonable tropical storm developed after we left, and despite running south to avoid the worst of it, we still got hit by some elements, which is why it was so rough. Wilderness and Offshore Medicine Nurse Specialist here 👋 I'm afraid that we don't *ever* recommend getting a seasick person cold. The reason being that the physiological effects of motion sickness on core body temperature causes cooling already, due to vasomotor changes initiated (we think) at a cellular level - the mechanism is not fully understood still. Intentionally getting an individual cold (hypothermic) on top of motion sickness puts them at a greater risk of developing moderate to severe hypothermia, which inhibits cognitive ability and safe vessel handling, alongside the obvious life-threatening physiological implications that come with the condition. There are multiple causes for nausea and other uncomfortable symptoms within motion sickness outside of the "eyes vs ears" oversimplification, and this includes the hypothalamus trying to initiate counter responses to the drop in body temperature, which often makes people feel hot and clammy despite the core temperature drop. Cool fresh air is good, and some do report relief from brief use of an icepack at the back of the neck, but ultimately this is largely due to distorted thermoregulatory perception rather than accurate insight into what is actually happening within the body's core function. Intentionally getting a person hypothermic is dangerous and does not stop motion sickness. Please don't do it 💕 In our Wilderness Medicine playlist, if you're ever really bored, I do give an educational video on the topic 😄 But it's somewhat unsurprisingly one of our least watched videos! I can't say I blame anyone, really. Fair winds, Bryony
@@CutterboveSailing when we cross the atlantic we also tried to go from the canary islands but did not get the right winds we had to drop down the cape verde archipelago to pickup the winds. The current runs (from Africa to Barbados) all the time but the winds the "trade winds" dont turn "on" till Nov which by then the end of the hurricane season as abated/ended. This year the Hurricane season was much more savage and lasted till late Nov almost Dec with many tropical storms hell even Granada got hit by a hurricane which is a RARE event. As for the seasickness the cold does take it away that is something I experienced myself while crossing the English Channel. Like Hiccups that you can "stop" with a good scare! SEASICKNESS can be stopped or adverted by COLD if your Freezing your body wont get seasick (its BUSY trying to stay warm)! And like I said once you get "sea leggs" it gets much better! Like someone else told here in the comment section that been inside the cabin is the worse you can do! Also dont eat/drink sodas, soups, dont drink alot of water sip it instead! Bread and saltine crackers in small quantities it helps keep the food down.
@@sebell69 indeed, we are just about to cover the devastation that was Hurricane Beryl, as I was one of the lead coordinators on a large-scale humanitarian response, liaising with the Grenadian government and then we handed over to the UN when they got boots on the ground, although our vessels continued to host some of their staff. It was truly devastating, and as you put it, it was a savage hurricane season indeed. As a healthcare professional I can only advise against getting cold when seasick, as there is no physiological evidence that it is curative and all research shows seasickness-induced hypothermia is detrimental, if not actively harmful. In regards to our crew member Paul, we'd had him sitting up in the cockpit, looking at the horizon, and all other conservative methods of managing seasickness. Unfortunately they were insufficient, and going below deck so that he could rest and pharmacotherapies could be safely introduced became the only management option. There was a rally not long before we set sail across the Atlantic where somebody sadly did die underway from severe seasickness and dehydration. It does happen, and 24 hours of all conservative measures without any success keeping food or fluids down clinically indicates time for a change in treatment plan.
Looks like your lochmeter is a Raymarine DST800? I have the same and find they clog easily even with minimal accumulation of gunk. We usually finish our sailing season relying on gps for speed as Spinny has given up the ghost by then, even if we dive to clean it up a couple of times.
I love your videos and can’t wait for your next instalment on your aid to the people devastated by hurricane beryl
The storms have been wild in the past year, glad you were safe through it
The Cutterabove time warp strikes again. Glad to see you made it through Beryl unscathed and organizing help for Grenada. Based on the previous episode, I assume you have taken a break from cruising. Hopefully not too long. Thanks for the video!
What a great idea. Love to see the next one

So happy you guys are ok❤ wonderful thing to help each other
We were rather over prepared, but very glad to have had it that way around rather than the opposite and get hit hard! And it's all good practice 😊
Not Shackleton-esque, but still... and bacon goes in a cold pan you heat rapidly, keeps it from curling 😉
We need to buy more bacon and try this 😄 Although what we consider *proper* bacon is hard to come by here!
Congratulations on your crossing. I completed the ARC race in 1988 and enjoyed every minute of the crossing. We completed the distance in 16 days 14 hours and 27 minutes. Safe sailing for the future

Looks like you made it, Spent 3 months there rebuilding a yacht then sailed it back to Rodney bay St Lucia. Very happy times there, 'have a double' its their tradition breakfast. If you leave don't go along the coast to Panama, Venezuelan pirates they kill and or rob you I've seen the results from sailors who sailed back to Chaguramas. Turn off your AIS if you go that way or as advised sail out to the oil rig and then head westerly direction. Enjoy your stay.
@michaelgreenland4682 oh we LOVE doubles now 😂 it became a Saturday morning tradition for breakfast at the market in Port of Spain. We should probably learn to make them onboard, in fact! Yes, the pirates are an issue around there. We have been keep clear of that area but at some point will probably have to make plans that involve getting a little closer than we might like. Trying not to think about that for now though 😅
Happy New Year !!! Wishing you and yours all the best. Keep up the great work.
Happy New Year to you, too! May 2025 bring you fair winds in life ✨️
not really a sailing video. more like a big pharma infomercial with sailing in the background. lots of slow motion, grandiose background music, and emotional content. would not want to be on this boat in the event of a real maritime emergency. this crew would break out the flattering camera angles and worry about slow mo replays before they would actually sail.
@mikeb-r3y this is a 20-minute video with snippets from over two weeks of sailing. That's a 20-minute summary of what was actually 20,160 minutes. If our editing style isn't your cuppa tea, that's absolutely fine! There's plenty of other sailing channels out there. But there's no need to make personal assumptions about our capabilities, experience, or safety management onboard, based on purely "I didn't like it." Fair winds, Bryony

I spent a few days there back in 2013/4 and should have said somethings before you left but Christmas got in the way, I feel guilty. The museum which Tim's (local taxi driver) brother who made models of yachts etc and photos of him presenting our Queen with a model of Royal Yacht Britannia etc. Tim took me around the entire Island in his taxi and stopped off at the turtle centre, the old sugar cane plantation etc however I met up with a lot of kids on the beach sailing the Iron Duke a 140 year old Whaler with sails, next day they said come out with them and they gave me the helm straight away when we left the beech (they trusted me?), well the helm tiller was a piece of bamboo; so was the boom. We sailed around the bay for about three hours with me giving piratical lessons, there were the crew of 6, two trapezing, one on each jib sheet and one on the main plus one bailing out continually! When we got back to the beach I was greeted by Alex who looked after the young kids and he owned the only sail loft on the island. He invited me and my sailing friend Robin (who owned yacht Sophie Ems at the time) that evening to his loft and when we arrived they were eating Macie do's (god I said not here!) but they had been delivered via the ferry from St Vincent. Next day we left to travel south towards Union Island and eventually to Grenada (Prickly bay), but the kids had be given a J24 to work on and that was there task under Alex's supervision. Good times and looks like us at the time 'hurricane due' which thankfully missed Grenada. Later that year I flew back from the UK to catch up with Robin as he had bought a 43' blue water boat in Trinidad very cheap! which I spent 3 months there rebuilding the entire boat from full paint job to wiring and engine rebuild. The worst think happen was when I landed in Grenada he had contracted Daguie fever ie flu which can kill you, transmitted by mosses. So, I sailed his yacht from Prickly bay to Chaguarmus as the doctor said he will get worst before getting better! Prior to all this; my first trip to the Caribbean to competed in the int 505 world championships in Barbados, So, I feel I know what life you are having and you've brought back memories especially in St Lucia which I spent two months rebuild his yacht before we set of Island hopping like yourselves (don't forget the Petons, beer that is. love to you both and look up Tiger in Union Island he's a great guy for towing us off a reef in the herbier and our return visit when we drifted out to sea when the anchor didn't hold at 3am.
@michaelgreenland4682 ah its okay, we aren't super close to real-time at the moment with the videos, although catching up! It sounds like you had a fantastic time there. It is such a special island with the kindest of people. We were sad to have to leave (tomorrows episode covers that chaos 😄). Mayone one day we will get back there. Dengue is nasty, isn't it. Hurricane Beryl indeed! Then it's just a few more episodes before we suddenly catch up a bit closer to real time somewhat, which will be nice. Bequia saw considerably less damage than the islands south of it. It's done well to recover as well, which is nice to see. We are doing okay mostly... don't want to give away too many spoilers 😄 But we are enjoying a few weeks of rest and recovery having pushed ourselves a little too hard, we have realised. That Asda bag has travelled many nautical miles now!
It’s looks like the last place you wanted to be but surely you have to except this on an ocean crossing?🤷♂️
@donalfinn4205 these were very unseasonable conditions for what was the official East-West crossing season, due to a large tropical storm that had formed up north. We always prepare for the worst, but it certainly was not expected, and many vessels/crews struggled a lot more than we did, with dismastings, exceedingly long passages compared to what they'd planned, and an individual rowing across sadly lost his life. We were very well prepared, thankfully, just extraordinarily tired and managing an unwell crew member.
