The Haikyuu Movie is Anti-Sports…
After four very long years, the new Haikyu movie has finally come out! I think it's a fascinating film with a unique and ambitious style, and I have a LOT to say about it.

    Honestly, I had doubts when I first saw the trailer last year. i thought the whole movie would just be all CG, and that making Miyagi the main character didn't sit well on me. Oh boy, I was WRONG. The movie is great all throughout. The blend of CG really gave the match it's deserved look - fluid motion, almost accurate poses, camera angles, etc. And Miyagi's struggles made me cry! It also makes sense to make Miyagi the main focus character in the movie, because in the manga, Miyagi was under utilized. You don't really feel his presence in the manga. In the anime, there are some added fillers maybe to support his character, but the movie really redifined him.

    I quite liked S1 of visions, particularly the black and white episode with the samurai. But personally I feel like season 2 is where the show really hit the ground running. Sure, it's no longer "Animatrix but Star Wars" but now it's "Love, Death, and Robots but Star Wars", which I find a little more interesting

    • @TRRYT
      @TRRYT 10 місяців тому

      I definitely agree that 2 is more diverse and interesting, which is one of the things I wanted out of this. But I can't help but feel it kinda sucks how quickly Disney dropped the "Animatrix but Star Wars" angle of this. Japan and Star Wars have a special connection through the samurai influence that pervades the whole franchise, and that's part of what made the concept so special and interesting for me. But I have to respect the diversity and sheer quality of stuff in Season 2. It's really good! At least we got "Grogu and Dust Bunnies" from Ghibli out of this whole thing.

    Do yourself a favour and watch the original anime and finish it off with the manga is possible (the anime only covers part of it). Trust me, you won't regret it. Animation may have aged somewhat obviously, but the core of well written character arcs and antagonists is still there in spades. This movie was great and added to it's legacy, very bold decition by moving it away from the main character, but I think it payed off... and that soundtrack was fire! Having seen the "basket ball" portion of it, I see no logical reason for taking the movie off screens almost everywhere here in the states. It's a fantastic watch. I am never buying the whole "Oh it was an economic decision" argument. I mean, it is economic but it's probably motivated by Japan's apprehension to play Oppenheimer in their theaters and i believe theirs is the third(?) largests market for movies produced in North America, after the US and... China.

    • @TRRYT
      @TRRYT 11 місяців тому

      I assume it's just very hard to get movies like these nice big release windows. Even Crunchyroll, by far the biggest distribution company here, has to put most of their smaller releases (anything that isn't Dragon Ball, One Piece, etc) in for just 2-3 days max, with minimal showings. GKIDS is even smaller than them and showing films that are often more niche. Combined with the pressure from films like Barbie and Oppenheimer, I imagine it was difficult to get this movie the full week it had.

      @@TRRYT Yeah but I live in the 4th largest city in the U.S., the theater is HUGE. They got like 20 something screens I think. Not one, not one?! It's not that crowded unless there's an event movie, and people tend to watch those s soon as they come out. Why dedicate 4 screens to one movie where only one person may or may not show up, and not do 3 once a week for this other movie whose fans will definitely be there. It's weird 😂 Btw, don't watch dragon ball myself, but would have totally went to see Slam Dunk 😊

    Long time Slam Dunk fan here. I'm glad you enjoyed this movie! Welcome to the Slam Dunk Fandom. Your review was fantastic: concise, straight to the point, and factual. It was interesting to see the perspective of a person unfamiliar with the series, because (at least for me) a lot of the moments that hit hard did so because of the context provided by the manga. If possible, I'd definitely recommend rewatching the movie after reading the manga series. You'll pick up on so many other subtleties, and a lot of the character dynamics and traits will make more sense. A couple of other thoughts: - The animation studio(s) went above and beyond by animating the crowd. It really helped with the immersion and they also slipped in a few easter eggs for manga readers. You might have noticed a particularly tall person in the stands or a group of people wearing purple and yellow jerseys. During Sakuragi's flashbacks, you also see many characters in the still frames. I won't spoil who they are, but seeing them on the big screen was surreal. - If I recall correctly, Miyagi is currently Inoue's favorite character (and possibly always was), hence the emphasis in this movie. That's the main deviation from the manga/anime series, where Sakuragi is the protagonist. Believe it or not, Inoue does actually have more info on Miyagi in the form of a one shot called "Piercings" he wrote and illustrated before the manga series, so Miyagi's backstory has been in the works for a while. It was fascinating to see which elements of that short story he chose to expand on and which parts he excluded. - The movie may have cut out a few of the scenes from the manga (i.e. practically the entire first half of the game and a very specific scene about Akagi), but they more than made up for it with the film-exclusive information. The backstory was a little heavy at times and arguably a bit cliche, but it was interesting to see how Miyagi's character became the way it was. I particularly liked the dynamics between Miyagi and his teammates during the flashback: Akagi being a bit of a tsundere, Miyagi mentioning "I think this is the first time we've ever talked" to Rukawa, etc. They also added some new information about Sannoh; the way they expanded on Sawakita's character (who, by the way, was given a fleshed out backstory in the manga) was really neat. - The way they adopted the movement was actually really good. It played to its strengths as a moving picture compared to the still frames of the manga, so it just looked...real, I guess. They also made Sakuragi an absolute gremlin which was hilarious. - Some of the nicknames weren't quite what I was used to. In the translated version of the manga I read, Sakuragi called Akagi "Gori", short for gorilla, and that two-handed slam dunk Akagi would do was labeled the "Gorilla Dunk." I do like that they kept the subtle details of Sakuragi messing up other names, though. For instance, he calls Sannoh "Yamaoh" at least once. - Once again, I have to recommend the manga. The anime is...debatable in terms of quality thanks to questionable pacing choices and somewhat outdated animation. 90s just isn't quite my style, and I don't think I can go back to it right after seeing how well they adapted the movement using CG in the film. BUT THE MANGA! If you liked the characters you saw on screen here, you'll love the manga. Sannoh is kind of the climax of the manga, so you're not going into it completely fresh, but there's a whole lot of development between the start and the finish. Sakuragi, the protagonist of the manga, actually starts out a complete novice who knows nothing about basketball, so in terms of accessibility, the manga is perfect even for non-sport fans. Plus, it provides better context for literally everything in the movie, from the form of just seeing the characters interact with each other to seeing the pre-game strategies and practice. Why is it such a big deal that Rukawa passed the ball? Why was Mitsui's stamina so questionable, and why was a different starter put in specifically to guard him? What was up with Akagi during the middle of the match? And what the heck is going on in each of the backstories? Sakuragi wasn't always bald? Mitsui had long hair? What are the bandages and bruises for? Who are the other audience members? Things like that made the experience that much better for me. (A bit of a disclaimer, though, you're not going to learn much more about Rukawa. I'm pretty sure that on the basketball team, Rukawa is given the least backstory by a pretty wide margin.) So yeah, thanks for reading my TED talk. tl;dr: Movie adapted manga fantastically, but read manga for more context and more fun with this colorful cast of characters. Good video, you earned a new sub :D

    I want to share my review 🙏 (pardon my english) First of all... Slam Dunk franchise is a life changer for me.. My love of Basketball, and My key illustration artsyles came from Inoue Sensei's Slam Dunk.. Wow! The first slam dunk is a 30 years of payoff, since this franchise hiatus from televison and theaters. On top of it, we've been delivered a very epic and beautiful feature film in every aspect, the right portion of storytelling, and basketball animation that feel so lively. The CGI and 2D Animation is combined beautifully, and very eye pleasing. If i remember the original anime, the voice acting is 85 percent sound exatcly the same, only sakuragi that feels different, but it doesn't matter, their performances is top notch 👌. The soundtrack, the music, SO EPIC, i feel the adrenaline rush. on the other hand, i start listening to other 10-Feet albums 😅. The main character change from Sakuragi to Ryota is part of Inoue Sensei perfect exploration to build a storytelling that can be accepted by both sides (Old time fans, and Newbies). Ryota is the only character who didn't have much background stories in manga and anime. And i really don't have problem with it, in fact that i'm Sakuragi big fan. The other characters also get a very right portion of stories and it sustain throughout the movie, and somehow, Sakuragi still feels like he's the main character. Nostlagia let it be the nostalgia, we already know the whole story anyway.. I can't imagine if this movie is 100% the same as the manga's, the newbies will confused by it. If theres any panel from the manga that didn't make it to the movie, that shows some reaction and moment from a character, all we got to do is just accept with an open heart... i believe Inoue sensei sorted it wisely.. Its an artwork, we can't please everyone.. I also think that this is part of the film business, thats why inoue packed it that way, so that the movie feels like new to both the newcomers and the old fans, in hope that the newcomers will love slam dunk franchise after it. My words, to the old fans, if you can't move on, from the old anime graphics, we'll be like stucked in the past, which is not relevant to the market these days. And that old anime, Inoue Sensei have some problems too back then. Let the manga and anime became the greatest masterpiece legacy, and we embrace this movie as a new standalone masterpiece in the box office. If theres any problem with the cut to flashback scenes, i feel like theres nothing wasted here, because those flashback stories never been in manga before. And that kind of storytelling is also told in the manga, one of the japanese filmmaking style also, and to build a deep emotional story. I can say that this is type of maturity of art vision that Inoue Sensei does in this movie masterpiece, i hope the fans understand this much as we also grew with Slam Dunk history. Don't do much complain, if this movie doesn't match with the manga 100%, "the scene should exist" bla bla, we should be grateful.. remember, this movie never been in Inoue Sensei's mind, He's been proposed many times but he rejected it.. Overall, its 9/10, please watch it on theaters, the vibe will rushing through your souls, i guaranteed, still the best sports anime of all time 👌 much love from Indonesia 🇮🇩

      Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! Your English is great. I agree with everything you’ve said here; I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I hope people are open minded about the shift to Miyagi and the new animation style, they’re both great!

    I love your analysis of 3.0! It’s one of my favorite films, which would make three Eva films that rank in my top 10 (maybe I like Eva too much?) I’m really excited for your analysis of 3.0+1.0, which I love just as much as 3.0. I hope you liked it, and I’m looking forward to your video. When do you anticipate it will be out?

      Thank you so much! Eva takes up a lot of space on my favorite movies list too. I wish I could come up with a solid date for the Thrice video, but I’m not sure because there are so many other ideas I’m looking at for videos, and because it’s going to be much longer than usual. For now, I’ll say I’m targeting to have it by the anniversary of the film’s release next March.
