How Achievements Influence the way YOU Play [Game Designer Explains]

Achievements are a feature of video games which are so omnipresent, they have become an effective part of the landscape of gaming as a whole. Pokémon's Type system is a construct of game design which gets strangely overlooked. So many people have grown used to thinking about it "logically" that they've forgotten that it's just a game, and therefore is bound by game design rules. So, let's go through each and every Type and discuss the considerations which may have gone into the creation of each of them, starting with the original tri...

Why Replayability Matters (for certain games) [Game Designer Explains]
Переглядів 9 тис.7 місяців тому
The potential to replay a game is a pretty big deal to some people. That said, it isn't always a good thing. For some games, replayability is simply just a natural part of their game's fundamental structure and core design, and even creates design challenges which the game developers need to overcome. Let's examine some of the intricacies of replayability in this video. Channel Discord: discord...

Instant Kill Mechanics (and why they tend to suck) [Game Designer Explains]

Why Final Fantasy VII features a 59-floor Staircase [Game Designer Explains]

One of the goofier gags of Final Fantasy 7 is the 10 minute long stair climbing sequence where the player has to manually walk up 59 flights worth of stairs. I feel like it’s also worth noting that Ice-types lost a lot of relevance once Fairy-types were introduced. In gens 1-5, Dragon-types were this legendary and rare typing that was near impossible to deal with. Given that Ice-types were usually fragile, you couldn’t even rely on them all the time because a well timed Flamethrower would have the Ice-type neutralized. Meanwhile, Fairy-types tend to be bulkier than Ice-types, have key resistances to Dark, Fighting, and Bug types, and are immune to Dragon-type moves. Instead of rely on a frail Ice-type to be one’s dragon slayer, there are Fairy-types now.

    -I'm actually in a weird demographic where I'm a gen 1 veteran and stopped playing after the first 3 gens. I absolutely refused to get a DS because the marketing material gave me the impression that EVERYTHING was done through the touchscreen and the buttons were only there for GBA backwards compatibility which put me off because I absolutely only wanted to interact with my games through sticks and buttons (Same story with the Wii and motion controls actually). -Smash Bros sold me the 3DS as an adult and this is when I finally became aware that the stylus and motion controls were just an ADDITIONAL set of controls on top of the traditional ones. -I got back into pokemon through the Hoenn Remakes. I've played X, Sun and Sword. Had to sell my Switch to pay for rent soon after and to this day have not played any DS era games.

    I think Gastrodon is supposed to be Cynthia's exception. While I believe she loves all her pokemon (several friendship evolutions), I think she just loves Gastrodon so much she didn't want to exclude it from her team. Sure it's stats aren't the best, but when the rest of your team is Cynthia's team, does it matter that one Pokémon is falling behind in power?

  • @DParkerNunya
    @DParkerNunya 5 днів тому

    As someone who did look up her team in BD, even that didn't make the fight as easy as these people claim. Granted, I didn't have an ice type on my final team (which would have helped), but the team is still that well built. If I hadn't let myself use items, I would have lost. Throw in the fact that I only looked her team up because of her reputation, and I'd say that she's still incredibly effective at frightening new players. I'm literally replaying BD to challenge her fairly now, and the thought is legit terrifying.

    I, personally love playing healer, to be specific the Cleric class in DnD (circle of death of Jergal), the past year i started in a campaing for a party that didn't really had a focus healer/buffer. Not gonna lie, at first i wasn't convince bcuz i mostly like being either tank or sneaky, but with just a few session i learn how fking damn important is to have at least ONE person. 👏 HEALING👏THE👏TEAM. Because if you fall, the entire party does (unless you have a paladin in the party too), now im starting to love more and more healing, and also, deciding who lives and who dies (mostly). You become really important for the team, but in the case for DnD it can be tedious, at times, but you dont need to always heal, sometime buffing can be the same as healing or even more efficient.

    8:16 Spiritomb, Rosarade, Togekiss (Those are the three I had issues with and come to mind first) She also has a Lucario and if I remember right a Milotic. Scariest fight ever so yeah I remember that one. It's also the only time I've EVER lost a trainer battle, let alone 3 times... Speaking of which, I guess I can leave what happened here 1st battle: Couldn't find Spiritomb's weakness and ultimately ended up losing multiple pokemon to it before brute forcing it. Made it up to Togekiss with my remaining Pokémon but due to serene grace, kept flinching and got swept 2nd battle: Made it all the way through to the Milotic, but with only Staraptor left, couldn't close things out. 3rd battle: Got all the way through her team with better routing, so I still had Infernape and Luxray left for her last Pokémon, and well that did NOT go well. Earthquake crit on my Infernape (who had also just used close combat), one-shotting it and then because it was super effective into Luxray, it also got one shot. (Luxray was only level 55 tbf) Edit: Oh I forgot to mention I went and caught, leveled and EV trained (in speed) a Weavile just for Garchomp :) (After losing)

    There are some more things that make Volo's twist great. For one, his obsession with the plates and the legends of the region is very in character for him being an ancestor of Cynthia, so many (me included) just thought they were focusing on that portion of Cynthia instead of just her battling. Kinda like showing he is moreso the ancestor of Cynthia's grandmother than he is just Cynthia. This also makes his quest more believable and makes it easier to forget how he is basically Cynthia. Another thing is that the title "pokemon wielder" is very intimidating for this game. There are no pokemon trainers back then, so much so that the player catching a starly is insane to the residents of Jubilife. Very few battle and none of them are very good at it, so seeing Volo titled as a "wielder" of pokemon, meaning he actually knows how to use them effectively in battle, makes him much more imposing. And on another note, Giratina's theme having a flatline in it is cool af.
