"Maoz Tzur" - Hanukkah Song. Stirring Hanukkah Music. Jewish Music. - All 6 Stanzas. (Subtitles)
Hanukkah songs are many, but the most popular is "Maoz Tzur," a rousing Hanukkah hymn. *(Please support us by becoming a Patreon member at www.patreon.com/CantorClassics , or by donating a small amount (or joining) at www.buymeacoffee.com/cantorclassics . We mainly record rare Jewish songs, especially Yiddish music. It is so important that seldom-heard Yiddish songs from the past be preserved for future generations. Recording these songs is so expensive. Please help keep the music alive. Thanks so much!)*
The beloved Jewish song heard in the video is performed by Marc Berman, to his own arrangement of the traditional Ashkenazic melody, for Klezmer ensemble (vocals, violin, flute, clarinet, trumpet, cello, bass and snare drums). The new arrangement is based on prior arrangements by the polymath and Holocaust martyr Arno Nadel (1878-1943) and the anonymous arrangement of the 1897 Union Hymnal.
While the song is generally known as "Maoz Tzur," some hold that the third word should also be included in the title, i.e., "Maoz Tzur Yeshuati." The distinction is based on whether the first three words are translated as "mighty rock of my salvation" or as "Mighty One, rock of my salvation."
It is uncertain who authored the words of the song, and exactly when. However, the composer did sign his name, "Mordecai," in an acrostic in the first five stanzas. The sixth stanza contains the further acrostic "KHaZaK." Thus, the full acrostic signature means "Mordecai, may he be strong."
That said, scholars debate whether the sixth stanza is a later addition. The earliest manuscript, dating to the late-fourteenth or early-fifteenth century, lacks the sixth stanza. Indeed, the stanza did not appear in writing until 1702.
Yet, the sixth stanza's acrostic seems to complete the acrostic of the first five. Some scholars thus speculate that the sixth stanza, which mentions the Divine vengeance to be visited upon Israel's oppressors, was transmitted orally, but omitted from texts, so as not to offend the Church censors.
Contrary scholars note that the first stanza contains similar sentiments to the sixth, yet was not omitted. Moreover, the earliest manuscript was fragmentary. It not only lacked the sixth stanza, but also the fourth!
The theme of retribution against Israel's persecutors seems to fit 12th century Germany. Many Jews in what is now Germany were slaughtered during that era, in the first two Crusades. Thus, a recent article suggests that the text was composed in Germany, between 1160 and 1190. Further proof of a Germanic origin is that the hymn was not included in the Sephardi ritual until relatively recently.
It is even disputed whether the prayer was written for Hanukkah, because only the fifth stanza refers to the Hanukkah story. Indeed, the earliest text linking the song to the Hanukkah candle lighting ceremony was a commentary (“Leket Yosher") published in the mid-15th century. (Tantalizingly, the commentary notes that Rabbi Israel Isserlein would skip certain parts of the hymn. Perhaps the sixth stanza???.)
Those holding that the text was written for Hanukkah note that the first stanza includes the word "Hanukkat," meaning "dedication of", which is the root of the word "Hannukah." Moreover, the last historical event referred to in the prayer is the Hanukkah story.
Finally, some speculate that the text was written by Rabbi Mordechai ben Yitzchak Halevi (Mainz, 13th Century), to whom the sabbath hymn “Ma Yafit" is ascribed, or by Rabbi Mordechai ben Yitzchak of Carpentras (14th century).
Regarding the music, the ethnomusicologist Abraham Idelsohn, in his "Jewish Music In Its Historical Development," argues for a German origin. He notes the melody's partial similarity to a German folk song ("So weiss ich eins was mich erfreut") that was adopted by Martin Luther (1483-1546) into a chorale ("Nun freut euch, lieben Christen g'mein"). He further notes another partial similarity to a 1504 battle song ("Benzenauer" ) .
In sum, Idelsohn holds that the present melody is not the original. He notes that an earlier melody that was prevalent in 1450.
Notes: Most of the historical information presented here about the text was gleaned from a 2022 article by Mitchell First in the "Jewish Link." Lastly, the video captions are interpretive, not literal, because the text contains many obscure allusions to the Bible and rabbinic literature.

It appears that we can all experience suffering without there being an obvious connection to money. These questions can remain unanswered. I will also quote Job 21:7-13 : Wherefore do the wicked live, Become old, yea, wax mighty in power? Their seed is established with them in their sight, And their offspring before their eyes. Their houses are safe from fear, Neither is the rod of God upon them. Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; Their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf. They send forth their little ones like a flock, And their children dance. They sing to the timbrel and harp, And rejoice at the sound of the pipe. They spend their days in prosperity, And in a moment they go down to Sheol.

@@claudedaubies7765 ... I was referring to the wider overarching influences that our moneyed system has boxed us into as a species, rather than individuals or the tossing of the coin circumstances whereby some loose and some win... depending on one's birthright or who one knows or might convince ... and naturally I believe that all peoples deserve the grace of comforts and securities that money can buy for their families and loved ones under this loosely defined Quid pro quo system of ours... But there should be a cap on usury and the elements that enable greed and unrestrained Lust for Power... Such thoughts even, should not be encouraged to exist if the capability of such actions are enabled through the ownerships of that sort of financial clout.. If we must serve the moneyed system.. why don't we focus our energies on keeping that lifeline pristine so that the planet can benefit the basic needs of all.. This world is an uneven place out of human design.. I believe we can do better.. rather than ringing our hands in servitude to a "cash-cow" of our own invention.... Surely "This" cannot be within the scope of God's intentions.

“ 13. Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high. 14. As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men: 15. So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider. 1. Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2. For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. 8. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 10. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. 11. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.“(Isaiah 52,53)!Amen!

Merci beaucoup !

      @CantorClassics 3 місяці тому
