    I needed this today. I havent been able to restart work after the holidays, and I have been having this dreading feeling that there are all these things I should have done in the last two weeks, but just didnt and couldnt. My husband gave me a gentle nudge and got me to start planning my work. I just did the 45 min work with me from Vikki, and now I already feel atleast 1% better. Thank you Vikki :)

    Excellent session , Vikki . This was very helpful to listen to . Many PhD students will resonate with Swagata’s struggle . I think she did a good job articulating the overwhelming feelings she’s having . It’s sometimes very hard to explain what we go through in the PhD journey . Your advice was spot on . Best of luck to Swagata. You’ll get through this soon ❤

    Thank you so much for sharing, this is really what I needed for this year's Christmas break. I work at an academic institute but I am not a PhD. While I was listening, I made my plate. And while I was making my plate, I came across the exact things you were telling us (like: what to do when it's raining?). So I was able to cover these as well. How productive ;-)

    I absolutely love this. '... you know more now than you did when you started. ' I submit next Autumn, and I love my thesis so far (50,000 words written), but I do find myself focusing on things I haven't covered, haven't done, haven't learned.

      I'm so glad you found it useful! It's so common to be really judgmental about our own work and to think that means it's rubbish - rather than realising that it just shows how nuanced your understanding is now! So impressed that you have 50000 words written and hope that you can celebrate that huge achievement! (I have an episode about being more proud of yourself that you might like here - ua-cam.com/video/aI9xFUzWmMs/v-deo.html )

    Question ... so, I get frustrated because I have no idea how long timewise ivwil need to do the chunks of my PhD. So, it is kinda morale destroying even before I start. I use Clockify to help quantify the time I spend on my PhD, which I appreciate. But it's like if I knew how long t would take to o, say an ethics application, I can chunk it. Break it down. I know this how long is a piece of string aspect about the PhD is a fully fledged procrastination tactic, yep.

    Such a compassionate episode that so many of us need during these dark days. Another suggestion, resonating with some of your excellent advice, that I heard and am finding useful for trying to work despite all the surrounding chaos is to follow a set routine every morning and evening of very basic, simple, healthy habits (like drinking a glass of water, getting some outdoor morning sunlight, taking a few deep breaths, and the like). It doesn't matter so much what they are just so long as they are super easy to do; it is the fact of adhering to a structure within your immediate control that helps counteract the dread about the broader chaos. Thank you for all the thoughtfulness you put into your episodes! 🙏

      I'm so glad you found it useful! I agree entirely about the morning routine - in fact, one of the reasons that I have never done an episode on this is it's one element of my life that I'm still very much working on! I think this is wise advice... I want to figure out how to follow it a little more consistently....

    Sorry for the slightly long comment! 😊 But I felt it was important to mention. I want to give a little suggestion about this title if you don't mind! 😊 Hope this helps a bit and your video reaches more viewers. I loved your content so I just wanted to help! The title is quite interesting, but, not being SEO friendly, it might be a little difficult to find on UA-cam. Users can easily find the video if specific keywords like 'How to Be Patient' or 'Tips to Stay Realistic' are added to the title. A keyword-rich title can be, for example: "How to Be More Patient & Realistic - Tips for Self-Leadership" or "Be Your Own Best Boss: Practical Tips to Build Patience & Realism". By doing this, the video will show more in UA-cam search and have a chance of getting views. Hope it helps! 🙌😊

    This is bang on time for me. I do have a question, though. I have my second year progression tomorrow, which i'm looking forward to. I've discussed with my supervisor that i want to do a postdoc, and she said she'd think about who might want to work with me. Is it appropriate or pushy to mention it tomorrow?

    • @thephdlifecoach7105
      @thephdlifecoach7105 4 місяці тому

      I love this question! The best thing about it is that there is no right answer - some supervisors might think it's pushy, others might be really impressed. Your job is to decide what YOU think is reasonable to do. The worst options are to a) not mention it and beat yourself up for not saying anything and b) mentioning it and then flapping about whether it was rude. The other "worst" option is to base your opinion on whether it was reasonable to ask or not on how your supervisor reacts (ie if she was ok about it then it was ok, and if she wasn't happy, then it wasn't). This just puts all the power in someone else's court. You get to decide if it's reasonable to ask, and if it is, how you want to come across when asking - do you want to be apologetic? polite? relaxed? demanding? etc - then you get to do what you decide. Please also now commit that if you do ask, and your supervisor doesn't take it well, that you will be kind to yourself - remind yourself that you decided it was reasonable to ask and you stand by that. Hope that helps! It's based on my "how to make decisions" podcast episode. (for what it's worth, I think it's totally reasonable to follow up, but you don't need my approval ;) )

    I had the same experience around academic writing - i didn't think i was particularly good at it, so i was confused when supervisors told me i was. A definite weakness is my Olympic-standard procrastination. 😏

      @thephdlifecoach7105 4 місяці тому

    As someone with multiple disabilities, I struggle with this one. I tend to work really hard on my thesis when I'm well, to ensure that I can do less - without guilt - when I'm not. This can mean that, during those busy periods, I'm exhausted.

      I'm so glad you're finding it useful! It's definitely applicable for people doing research at any level (and probably everyone out of universities too!)

    'in fact you will get a better understanding of what you do know and you don't know if you just keep writing' - very good point. Really helpful video thanks :) I did recently make the note: 'master awareness of when I've gone down the rabbit hole' haha. I find the endless reading fascinating as well as procrastinating so possibly need to allocate some 'rabbit hole time' :P

      I'm so glad you've found the video useful! It's always hard to find the balance between reading because you're fascinated and reading because you're procrastinating, so I think it's a great shout for you to allocate some rabbit hole time :) Let me know how you get on!

    Whoa! This absolutely makes sense! When I'm writing content, I tend to read everything and then find that little typo, correct it, then find that it can be written better, then revise it, and so on and so forth.

      So many people do! Try to separate reading, generating text and editing text into three separate activities and see how it helps!

    Hi Vikki. Really enjoy listening/watching your show. Just an FYI…. Unable to listen to your podcasts on Apple for the last few weeks. Not sure what the issue is as it says “This episode is temporarily unavailable”

      Hello! So glad you enjoy the show! That’s really strange - it works on my Apple and my stats suggest other people have been able to listen too? How bizarre! Have you tried a different device? Sorry it’s not working for you!
