Removeable Ram Promaster Slider Door Rain / Shade Awning Demonstration Video
See www.innovativervaccessories.com for more details about this simple rain awning. In this video, I test the lightweight, plastic, rapidly deployable folding rain awning I designed for my Ram Promaster / Winnebago Solis 59PX in a downpour. I created a slider rain/shade awning for my 2023 Winnebago Solis 59PX, which can be easily deployed to prevent rain from entering my van through the slider. The awning is securely inserted into a small gap above the slider rail at the top of the Ram Promaster's slider doorway and can be secured more tightly with shims. The awning has two sections - one that covers the slider doorway and another that covers the slider door. The section resting on top of the slider door was designed to keep the interior side of the slider door dry, protecting window coverings and storage systems from getting wet and preventing water from getting behind the interior panels. The awning was designed with the Class B RV life in mind. It is lightweight, easily stored, and performs multiple uses, acting as a rain or shade awning. Installation is a breeze. It requires no tools or drilling. The awning provides many important benefits of larger permanently mounted awnings in a small package. Because there is no fabric, mold is less of a concern. Simply wipe down the awning before storing it and tent it while it dries. Because it is constructed of lightweight, flexible pieces, the risk of expensive damage due to wind is minimized. This awning has been an important accessory for me. It allows me to continue to enjoy the openness of the great outdoors even when it is raining. I can ventilate my van on rainy days and minimize water entry when I am loading and unloading the van while it is raining.

The link below shows the size of the Murphy bed without the additional mattress where the largest dimension is 77" for sleeping side to side. www.winnebago.com/models/product/motorhomes/camper-van/2023-solis/59px

Hello! Absolute Genius. My Promaster slider door & rain has been bothering me since it's purchase in 2020. I searched repeatedly for solutions...the "J rail" doesn't work despite all the You Tuber opinions to the contrary. All it did was make a second line of water drops to hit me in the face when I open and shut the door. I was able to follow along, make a fast trip to the big box store, and constructed the initial guard using scissors, a yardstick, sharpie, duct tape, and an X-Acto knife on a rainy day. THIS WORKS!! Going to start working on the second guard to protect the back of the open door. I was about to give up until I was so lucky to find your video. Thanks bunches for sharing! Very nice!

Yes. The RV gutter is great for redirecting water running down the side of the van but does not protrude enough to be useful as an awning. I am glad you appreciate the design. You will enjoy having it on hand. : D

Prices were right about in the middle of the range you stated when I bought. I bought a 2023 PX in 7/2022. It was impossible to haggle when there wasn't any inventory to haggle over post COVID. You either paid the price or you went without. I finally got mine at a decent price when there were a handful of dealers in my area that had them in stock and they mildly competed for my business. I did miss out on one decent opportunity when I still had not accepted that the market was what it was and prices weren't going down. Make sure you get the new chassis. Major updates to the Ram PM in 2022 and some more in 2023.

Looks like overhang is about 20". Are you happy with that amount of overhang? more? less? Also it looks like the piece protecting the inside of the slider door is held in place by the lip of the door, but also by the small groove formed where the pop top rests on the van roof? For a regular van roof, it would then be necessary to find a way to anchor the slider door awning piece on the roof? Also, the website listed did not connect. Thanks

    • @603BVan
      @603BVan Місяць тому

The size has been good. When settling on a size, the main considerations were wind, ease of use, and storage. As far as wind goes I wanted to be able to deploy the awning in the same conditions I would feel comfortable deploying an umbrella. That helped put constraints on the size and provides a reasonable frame of reference for when to put it up and when to take it down. If I would not feel comfortable deploying an umbrella, I dont put it up. Storage was also a consideration. Both pieces fit along the wall in my shower. ( a great place to store wet tiems). You are right about the long edge being wedged under the poptop. Fortunately, because that junction does not need to be water tight, there are many options to secure it / hold it against the roof. Adhesive mounted strip magnets could be added along that edge to hold it fast. Or a scheme can be devised to weight it or pull it down with bungee loops / magnets. Thanks for the heads up about the link. Not sure what is going on there. www.innovativervaccessories.com. I hope to put some time into it this weekend.

Thanks for replying. Today while messing around with this, I realized there is actually a shallow groove on the side of the Promaster. You can see it at 2:46 below the poptop lip and above the top of the door. With that piece the proper width to fit between that groove and the lip on top of the door, it stays in place. Of course nothing on a van is straight so the necessary width of that piece has to taper from the back to the front of door so that it fits snugly to stay in place. Also, the piece that covers the open door was easily covered with two 30" wide pieces of cloroplast, so my Promaster 2500 must have a door of less width than yours. The pieces I bought are 30" x 20" so I have a 20" overhang. One question: the back piece- did you tape 2 pieces together to make the folded piece or did you cut the cloroplast so it folded over on itself? I cut just one face of the piece so it folded over, but it doesn't quite fold flat.

Good video. What was your follow-up? Did you recaulk? Is it still sealed. I have a PM 2017 and one of my driving lights had some moisture. I unscrewed it and it drained and then I put caulk on the screws. Have you looked at your roof factory seals yet? Mine were poorly installed leaving gaps that I could see the seam where the roof pieces were welded.

    • @603BVan

That was an ordeal. I was bound and determined to use a piece of 80/20 to construct a small roof rack using VanTech hardware to mount to (Vantech M/J Series Mounting Base). Unfortunately, the back edge of the pop top interferes with the forward roof rack mount. I had to heavily modify a Vantech H45-H46 adapter to accommodate the edge of the pop top. I do plan on creating a video for it soon and provide some lessons learned. Things I like, things I would do differently.

    • @603BVan

Rather than bolting the board to the L-Track I ended up just resting the board on 4 of these L Track Double Lug Threaded Stud... www.amazon.com/dp/B07V9S7S3P?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Those stick out far enough to support the ends. I use a stack of milk crates to support the board from underneath. I had to cut down one of the milk crates with a table saw. This provided a very strong support system that doubles as storage. The board is just resting on the lugs and the crates. I could drill some holes through the board and tie the board off to the lugs to hold it down securely. I like this solution because it is easy in and easy out. If it's not clear let me know and I will create a video. See my winter mods video for more details

The same features of the soft start that make it possible for you to run your AC off your lower wattage generator are beneficial for generators that (just) manage. That is one of my favorite mods that I invented that allows me to keep water out of my van when the sliding door is opened. You can find some videos on my channel where I describe how I created it. Like this one : ua-cam.com/video/K6HKkVRu0Bg/v-deo.htmlsi=MgeheVPkq2ZGNwqM

Brave! Nice video. Two questions: Whatm is the stick-like thing sticking up off the roof, and how did you keep the water system from freezing? Does your Solis come with the Heater?

Thanks! The "stick" is the external antenna for a weBoost branded cellular phone signal booster. The Solis comes with Truma heating system that works as both a furnace and water heater. It uses propane for fuel and 12 VDC power is used to power fans that circulate and distribute the heat throughout the coach. When plugged into 115 VAC you can run a space heater. Where do you store the 2nd table when driving?

It fits nicely in the garage area. I put it flush up against the vertical surface of the bottom left cabinet. I have to rotate it a little bit so that it will sit flush. Use some brackets to hold it in place. I don't use it often but it's nice when I am not solo. When solo, I mostly use one table and move it between mounting positions.

Would that be dangerous in an accident?

We do that with our ladder too. I think having the ladder loose in the van would be worse in an accident. Loose flying ladder parts would be scary. This way it is secured.
