Obrigado
Thanks for explaining this
It's ironic that I'm watching this because I'm treating glaucoma now with my eye drops. I have to treat it four times a day.
Avoid Corporate Optometry. They are focussed on shareholder returns at any cost. Be independent, feed your profits back into your own practice. Look after people, solve their problems, work within their socioeconomic limitations. Don’t let a Corporate “Manager” dictate your work.
Thank you for the information. I just want to ask this, my husband suffer from TON last February on his right eye due to accident. Is it possible that it can affect to his left eye? Like is it possible that it'll pass also to the other eye?? We're so stressed and depressed about it. I hope you'll answer this. Thank you in advance.
Thanks for this video Dr. Cornwell. I’ve been out of school for a year and a half after getting my undergrad in Biological Science, and I’ve seriously considering optometry. Been trying to get as much insight as I can and this has helped 🙏🏻
Glad you found this helpful! If you have any further questions about the profession, don't hesitate to reach out. Best of luck on your academic journey.
When I had my first eye dialation done last year, the dialation drop (Tropicimade) also caused my distance vision to blur until the drops wore off. Hyperopes (especially latent hyperopes) will notice this. My near vision was even worse, until the drops wore off a few hours later.
This is correct! Thanks for clarifying. For patients who have a low plus prescription and typically don't need glasses for clear distance vision (eg. latent hyperopia), the dilation drops may cause mild distance blur.
Greatly oversaturated in California Hardly any jobs Not worth the expense
Good Morning Docante1, Thanks for watching! I worked in California for 6 years and had a very different experience. I personally know of several community health centers throughout the state looking for optometrists to help start optometry departments and expand vision services for their organizations, from Socal way up to Mendocino. These organizations are offering competitive salaries, benefits packages and student loan repayment plans. If you're interested in learning more, we can connect over email kevincornwellOD@gmail.com I also know that the California department of corrections is always looking to hire OD's at competitive rates, throughout the state. For optometrists looking to live and work in the heart of San Francisco or Los Angeles, yes, there may be some challenges in finding a fulfilling career path due to a high concentration of eye care providers. Thanks for the explanation, it's very helpful. I had an accident, most of the bones in my face were fractured including the bone in my right eye. As a result I can't see clearly, my vision is blurry, sometimes there are 2 shadows. Like when typing this comment, I keep making typos. After a month I came back to the hospital. The doctor said my optic nerves were pale. There is no further treatment, as you explain in the video. I was given eye drops, eye ointment and vitamin B Complex and asked to return to the hospital next month. For those of you who experience something similar, hopefully our vision can return to normal. Take care of your health and keep praying, hoping for a miracle from God

Just curious. How much the range salary of optometrist in rural setting?
Hey Mike! Great question. The answer depends on a variety of variables such as practice modality and geographic location. It is not uncommon for optometrists in rural settings to make $135k-$165k, sometimes more if they're also receiving student loan stipends. You might find the following article interesting, 2023 annual income survey from Review of Optometry. www.reviewofoptometry.com/article/2023-income-trends-a-wealth-of-experience Hope this helps!
what about if you have narrow angle, is it risky ?
Great question, thanks for your comment! You are correct, when patients have narrow angles, using the eye dilation drops is risky and can potentially cause angle closure and high eye pressure (and subsequent vision loss from glaucoma). When patients have narrow angles, eye doctors typically perform a laser peripheral iridotomy procedure to open the anterior chamber angle, making it safe to use the eye dilation drops in the future. Hope this helps!
My eyes improved greatly, when I reversed Type 2 Diabetes. They got really bad, really fast before diagnosis. After reversing Type 2 with diet alone, they were much better than before minus .25 in each eye, the next thing to window glass. I no longer needed glasses. BUT, medical thinks I need a diabetic eye exam each year. The dilation drops badly damaged my eyes. Eye doctor said reversal drops were too expensive. I would gladly have paid for them, but he ignored that idea. I did search the Internet for some, without success. After a year and a half, my eyes had not fully healed from dilation, still a problem. I needed another exam (or so med says). So I asked physician for a referral for an ophthalmologist with reversal drops. I learned that reversal drops are no longer manufactured, but if requested ahead, they may be able to get them. And they did get them! I would not allow dilation without. The distortion I see, a star pattern on lights, changed somewhat, but is still present. It has been two years and my eyes have still not fully healed from the damage due to the dilation drops. What can I do?
I have TON from a trauma at 17. I never regained the vision I lost, however, the vision I still had has gotten significantly worse over the past year. I’m 28 now. I had flashing lights in my right eye constantly for about 1 yr after my injury, and periodically after that. Unfortunately, the past year the flashing is back 24/7 even when I close my eyes to sleep. It’s terrible. My doctor said it’s just my “cells” misfiring. Is this normal? Can ON get worse over time?
Hey Fred! Thanks for your comment, I'm sorry to hear about your vision issues. Typically, vision loss from TON stays relatively stable over years and possibly decades - unless you develop some other eye condition that affects your vision. This includes high eye pressure/glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration. I recommend having a DILATED eye exam at least once per year, to ensure everything is healthy and stable inside your eyes. Speak with your eye doctor or primary care doctor about the flashing symptoms, usually if they're new it may be a sign of a retinal problem (eg. hole/tear/detachment of the retina). Hope this helps!
Iam also suffering from this problem
We are from India my brothers son 5 year old lost his left eye vision on November 12 due to fire cracker injury, doctor suggested that he had ocular trauma on his left eye please help us is there any solution for get back my son's vision he is just 5 years old
Thanks for watching this video, I am sorry to hear this. I would make sure your son is followed closely on a regular basis with an ophthalmologist in your area to make sure his eye is healing properly and that the eye pressure is not elevated. If his eye pressure is elevated, this could cause further damage to his vision. Sometimes vision can recover several days or weeks after an injury, however if the trauma was severe enough, some vision may be permanently lost.

I graduated optometry school in 1981--Today, ODs are vastly under compensated for 8 years of: student loan debt, blood, sweat & tears.
Chill it will settle itself more Technology more screens more eye problems
The OD I work for mentioned that this is the result of more optometry schools opening around the US, flooding the marketplace with newly graduated ODs, and thus keeping wages relatively stagnant. Would you agree?
@@FilonisHat You are correct. Also corporate optometry does the dispensing of glasses and contacts -- these used to be a big profit center for the OD. Patients have been brainwashed that all doctors charge too much and are millionaires. The patient population has become unappreciative, demanding and down right cheap.

This was one of the better explanations that i hv seen. Simple & delivered wt effect... i was diagnosed at 19 & am now 45. I have been blessed by God's grace to see the best specialists over the years. There was one thing i pondered tho. Can a glaucome patient do PRK / LASEK surgery? Or is it better we stay away from such?
Glad you found this video useful! In general, having glaucoma is NOT a contraindication to having lasik/prk refractive surgery. It largely depends on the integrity/thickness of your cornea as well as the severity of your glaucoma. If your cornea is normal thickness and is healthy (no corneal dystrophies or keratoconus), refractive surgery should be an option. Having said that, I will say that patients usually only get to "choose one distance" when they have refractive surgery. You can either correct your vision for distance or for near, but not both (unless you get monovision which typically throws off depth perception). Many times, patients are looking to be completely independent of wearing glasses for ALL activities and visual demands, which is usually not possible.
@@visionrefocused thank you sir for responding. Thanks for the knowledge...appreciated.

Thank you for providing some insight! During optometry school, how many hours would you spend studying per week?
Hey Arkaden, Thanks for checking out this video. The number of hours I spent studying per week varied depending on what part of the semester we were in. during midterms, finals, and prepping for boards, it was common to spend 6-8 hours/day in the library - sometimes more! I tried to keep things interesting by switching up where I studied and who I studied with. I also prioritized sleep, fitness and exercise to help keep my mind balanced.

Hey quick question! How do you like being an optometrist? What’s your personal experience?
Hey Juan, thanks for checking in. I love being an optometrist. I highly recommend the optometry profession to anyone interested. I've spent my career practicing mostly in rural settings (hospitals & health centers) so I haven't really been affected by the "cons" I mentioned in this video. There's a large need for medical eye care throughout the country, but specifically in rural settings. In addition to seeing patients, I've been fortunate to help collaborate with various community health centers to help open optometry departments and expand access to vision services for patients. Optometry also helped me learn to speak Spanish and travel to various underserved parts of the US, Mexico, and Central America to provide eye care. I'd be happy to answer any other questions you may have. Thanks, Kevin
@@visionrefocused that sounds awesome! I love helping people and interacting with different cultures. I think this profession will suit me. Wish me luck I’m just getting started with my educational journey since I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. Never too late I think!
@@juansotelo2748 Glad to hear this. You'll do great. It's never too late, I saw fellow students in optometry school who were in their late 30's and already had families.
@@visionrefocused Wow this response tight here has encouraged me too.. Family and age eats me up daily but I have always wanted to become an Eye Doctor since childhood because myself have sight issues.
My eyes are still blurry and sensitive to light, they said we have to dilate your eyes, to stabilize your prescription, Day 3 and counting im still sensitive to light and my vision is little bit blurry 😏
I'm sorry to hear this. Sometimes the stronger dilating drops are used depending on your age, glasses prescription and eye color. It is rare, but your vision may fluctuate in the days after a dilation, especially if you're a hyperope. Your vision should return to normal within the week afterwards. If not, you should report back to your eye doctor's office and have them check your eyes.
Are they better now ?
@@unknownchannel7022 yes thanks for asking, maybe i was overreacting 😁
Hi, a year ago i woke up blind in one eye. No warnings and no pain. Went to ER got head CT scan and blood work and all looked good so ER doctor said he doesn't know what caused it. Left ER went to a regular eye doctor and next day seen eye specialist and both doesn't know what caused it. If it was due to high blood pressure or spike in sugar wouldn't that take out both eyes instead of one? Possibly glaucoma but dont know cause couldn't dilate my eyes but did do alot of other test. Im worried I'll go blind in my other eye but doctor said my other eye looks good and not to worry but i still do. I did have a eye injury year's ago, alot of year's ago in 6th grade maybe and im 63 now. Had to stay in hospital a few days or a week with both eyes patched which doctor said that was only way to stop bleeding in my eye. My problem is i cant remember which eye it was! If its same eye do you think its possible that it has caused my blindness now? It's my left eye that has gone blind and over the last few years eye doctors have told me that my left eye is much weaker than my right. Thanks for reading and sorry for this long comment.
Hi Michelle, I'm sorry to hear about the changes with your eyesight. Without examining you, I cannot know for sure as to why this happened. It sounds like you may have had a stroke (ischemic optic neuropathy) in the eye, which would cause a sudden, painless, loss of vision as you're describing. This is more prevalent in people with high blood pressure and/or diabetes, but can happen to anyone. Strokes in the eye may only affect one side. I'm curious why you couldn't have your eyes dilated? This a crucial part of the eye exam that would help your eye care provider determine the cause of your vision loss. Prior eye injuries can also affect your vision years or decades down the road as well. Sometimes people are more susceptible to higher eye pressures and glaucoma with eye injuries, so this may also be a possible cause of your vision loss. Hope this helps!
@@visionrefocused Thank you 😃.. the reason for not dilation is because it could be dangerous in case Glaucoma caused it.

Does everyone with glaucoma becomes blind? What about the medication that to treat it eye drops treatment. Latanaprost. ?
Hi Elizabeth, Thanks for your comment. No, not everyone with glaucoma becomes blind. Some people don't even notice any vision loss when their glaucoma is caught and treated early. Other times, if the glaucoma is caught late or is not properly managed, then yes, patients can lose vision and become legally blind. There are many different eye drops used to treat glaucoma. Latanoprost, timolol, brimonidine, cosopt and combigan are all common eye drops used. Depending on the severity of glaucoma, allergies to medications, or medical contraindications, these will determine which eye drop the doctor prescribes.

Nice, advice, but I am already diagnose with glaucoma but I still can read although I am 73 yrs old, but my distance is very poor although I am wearing an eyeglasses....every time I used to go check my eye pressure is good, I am asking how come my distance is very bad. Imy cataract is not bad, the reason my doctor do not like me to be operated...how to improve my distance
Hi Thelma, thanks for your comment. There could be many reasons why your distance vision is not good right now. Next time you see your eye doctor, you can ask to get an updated glasses prescription for your distance vision, you should also have a dilated eye exam to rule out any other reasons why your vision may be reduced. It could be from early cataracts, glaucoma, dry eyes, diabetes or something completely different. You may simply need an updated pair of glasses. For patients with cataracts, I will show their most updated glasses prescription to them in a trial frame and if they're happy (and meet the vision criteria to drive in their state), I let them decide whether or not they want cataract surgery. Hope this helps!
Doctor, pls what type of food can someone with Glaucoma avoid or eat?
@babatunderebecca2608 Thanks for watching this video. If I was diagnosed with any type of glaucoma, I would try and eat as healthy as possible and avoid inflammatory foods that are processed or fried. I would try to follow a paleo or Mediterranean type way of eating and limit industrial seed oils in the diet. I would also try and get plenty of exercise - even just consistent walking, in order to promote bloodflow to the eye. I would also address any underlying comorbidities like obesity, smoking, hypertension or sleep apnea, in order to reduce the risk of glaucoma progression. After all of this, I would then consider taking an eye vitamin for glaucoma (eg. GlaucoCetin). Hope this helps!

My grandma & mum (my mums mom) had Glaucoma they both went blind. i am nearly 50 & get my eyes checked. My eye sight is perfect right now, no glasses of what ever…
Thanks for watching! That's great to hear that your eyes and vision are perfect right now.
thank you Doctor.i was recently diagnosed with Glaucoma,However my eye pressure is normal.how is that Possible?
Thanks for your comment. People can have "normal tension glaucoma" where there is damage to the optic nerve despite having low eye pressure. This could be simply hereditary, or caused by any number of conditions that compromise oxygen and blood flow to the eye - diabetes, sleep apnea, smoking, low blood pressure to name a few. Next time you see your eye doctor, ask about the potential causes of your glaucoma.
Make sure and do some cardio work outs. Me, i found out about mine @18yo. Recently i began to change diet....this had a signifinat impact on my readings when i visited my doc for a routine check. I did not eat flour, rice, consumed zero sugars & worked ouy door a lot
