Petrified Wood Backpacking Trip Plaster City, California
Fossil Petrified Wood! My recent geologic 2-day backpacking trip was amazing in terms of finding both minerals and fossil petrified wood. This video captures everything I love about being in the outdoors: natural beauty and solitude of the desert, fossils, minerals, and a glorious sunset. Love to all and happy trails, Joe

Mojave Cinder Cone Geologic Backpacking Trip
Переглядів 3162 місяці тому
I absolutely recommend this trip for the amazing “out of this world” scenery in addition to being one of the best-preserved cinder cones in Southern California. This was my 3rd visit to the Mojave Cinder Cone National Natural Landmark (MCCNNL) and I will be making at least one more trip this year to another nearby crater. Depending on how you count them, there are 20 to 32 volcanic cinder cones...

Friends, this video is a different type of adventure from my normal geologic backpacking trips. Inspired by many trips to the lava tube caves of Pisgah Volcanic Crater (see link: ua-cam.com/video/80B-AqrYhXg/v-deo.htmlsi=bQlVD8lZHLJO2Ddv), Lori and I had our 3rd Annual Halloween Spooky House for our grandchildren. This year Lori designed the maze of tunnels and exceeded all our previous spooky ...
Anza Borrego State Park Geologic Backpacking Trip to Clark Dry Lake

The beauty of Clark Dry Lake in the Anza Borrego State Desert Park is stunning! ANCIENT CLARK LAKE is a former lake created during the Pleistocene Epoch and likely existed until the last ice age period (~11,700 years ago) - Clark Dry Lake is a relic of Ancient Clark Lake. The lake was fed by runoff from the Santa Rosa and Coyote Mountains and eventually dried up over the centuries due to global...
Alabama Hills California Geologic Backpacking Trip

At the recommendation of one of my Physical Geography students, I spent two days hiking and backpacking in Alabama Hills, located on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and is the gateway to Mount Whitney. In terms of rock climbing, it is like Joshua Tree, but way better with weirder rock formations and an incredible dark night sky. As one visitor said, “It's an explorer's playgroun...

MY TRIBUTE TO ELMER LONG: On by backpacking trips to the Mojave Desert and Sierra Mountains, I would past by an odd roadside attraction called “Elmer's Bottle Tree Ranch”. One day I finally stopped out of curiosity to view this desert compound. This is one of the coolest road-side attractions along Historic Route 66. This site is literally a forest of bottle trees (large metal pipes with bottle...
Best of Yellowstone’s Beauty and Geology

This summer (2024) I had the amazing opportunity to spend 4 and a half days with my daughter and grandson exploring Yellowstone National Park, arguably the best national park in the world! While Yellowstone has incredible scenery and more wildlife than most parks in the world (the bison herds were breathtaking), the topper for me was its geologic features. The park has over 10,000 hydrothermal ...
Abandoned Dinosaur Miniature Golf Course

In my on-going search for the weird, strange, and unique, I visited an abandoned dinosaur-themed miniature golf course in Apple Valley, California. As the legend goes, in the 1970's, an Apple Valley resident planned to construct a dinosaur-themed miniature golf course, but unfortunately once completing about 37 concrete dinosaurs, lost interest in the project. Over the decades, time has been ha...
What Geologists see when Visiting Disneyland

WHAT GEOLOGISTS SEE WHEN VISITING DISNEYLAND. In December 2022, a fan of my geologic backpacking videos, Carol Pingle, jokingly suggested that I annotate my geologic observations on a picture that I posted of Lori and me standing in front of the Matterhorn Mountain. Later, both my daughter and my wife Lori kept encouraging me to make a video of my geologic observations of both Disneyland and Ca...

Friends, this trip captures everything I love about backpacking: beautiful vistas, stunning geology, and incredible sunrises and sunsets. This two-day backpacking trip to Fonts Point in the badlands of the Anza Borrego State Park is one of my favorite trips. Nicknamed California’s Mini-Grand Canyon, it’s best viewed at sunset and sunrise so that its deeply cut and intricate ridges cast bold sha...
Fossil Falls, California Geologic Backpacking Adventure

This video is from my past backpacking trip to Fossil Falls, California. The name “Fossil Falls” is a misnomer - there are no fossils and today only dry waterfalls. Fossil Falls is a remnant of a once spectacular series of waterfalls that existed during the last ice age, created from melt waters of glaciers in the Sierra Nevada. The falls were formed when the Ancient Owens River was forced to d...

One of my favorite geologic landforms to explore are the Dry Lakes of the Mojave Desert. On this 2-day backpacking trip, I went to Harper Dry Lake in search of meteorite fragments. This dry lake is approximately 9 miles long and 4 miles wide with a shoreline of ~28 miles. I always love the immense solitude and endless horizons of desert dry lakes. Happy trails, Joe

Completed another item on my bucket-list: A 2-day backpacking trip in the Mojave Cinder Cone National Natural Landmark. This region is part of the Mojave Desert National Monument, located approximate 130 miles north of Los Angeles, California. This area of the Mojave Desert is special to volcanologist because the volcanic field has ~32 cinder cones that are remarkably well preserved in addition...

Did you have any previous channels
There used to be a cave opening (multiple) that was just east of the creek. It went down for about 200+ feet and about half way down there was some blast doors that someone dug a little crawl hole around. About 6 years ago some boys from the local high school went on a late night booze infested expedition and caused a scene. The city then covered up the cave entrance with concrete and boulders. The few spoiled and entitled ruin it for the rest of us.
I found your channel searching for info on the Yuha Desert... it's my backyard during the cooler temps. I'm loving it. In my explorations, I've developed an interest in geology, and I want to learn more without formal education. There are vast rock compositions and I'm at a loss how to start the identification process. Side note, I've found some lovely pieces of pw out there. Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you!❤
Do you keep all your finds or leave them after you film?
Most of them I just leave because I don’t have the space to carry them and the weight adds up really quickly.
pretty cool finds! thanks for bringing us along.
@@wbwright79 thank you for your gracious comment.
Still loving your videos, so much said with so few words. Love the education I receive every video. Thanks for sharing!!
the clam beds are pretty cool too, just saying...
@@werftv4580 I agree, the Yuha Basin oyster beds are phenomenal!
I have found a lot of petrified wood in the northern end of the Sea of Cortez, near the shore line to the east of Golfo de Santa Clara. There was so much that I would choose the pieces that I liked best. I did not know it at the time, but I believe taking the petrified wood is not allowed. I am learning a bit of geology and find it fascinating. Helps me understand what I see all around me. Glad I found your channel! 🙂
Thank you for sharing that information and story. Sounds like you found an incredible vein of fossil petrified wood!
@@joseph_wright There is so much material it almost looks like more fossils than not. Glad I found your channel! 🙂
How receptive was the border patrol with you packing heat out there? have fun and carry on!
They were awesome, and we’re only concerned about my safety and if I needed any water or help. My experience with he border patrol over the years (i’ve had five different encounters) have been very positive and I’ve always found them to be professional and polite and winning the hearts and minds of the public. Honestly, I think County and city police/sheriff officers/deputies could learn a lot from them with regards to public relations. Thanks for asking, Joe.
I am a geology student in the northern half of the state. I found your videos a while back and ever since I have watched your content and appreciate you giving a window into the geology of an area I have never been. Thank you for your work and highlighting these really neat areas and their geology!
Joshua, as I said in my previous comment below, you made my day and nothing makes me happier than seeing people appreciate the geology and geography of our beautiful state. You have to keep me posted on your academic and professional career as a geologist. Keep up the great work, Joe.
Thank you
Thank you for your comment and watching my video. It brings me great joy sharing something that I love so much with others.
I'm going to the Yuha basin on the 7th with my friend. We're college students, and we get our geology and rockhounding out during the winter break when we're both home from school. We both just found your videos and have been binging them. Your diagrams are awesome and exactly what we need to understand what's around us when we go to the desert.
You made my day. May I wish you a huge success with your exploring and experience. It brings me great joy to see people appreciate the natural beauty and geology that we have here.
Back when my mother was living in Ocotillo in the 1980s and 90s, we occasionally when rock hunting out that way and finding petrified wood. However, the area we typically went was on the south side of the old highway and a bit west of Plaster City. That area and possibly farther along toward Seely, has rolling hills much like the Yuha lands south of the freeway, badlands that wash away easily. I've wanted to go back there again some time and look for petrified wood. BTW, my brother lives in the same house in Ocotillo and the original owner previous to my mother decades before had collected a lot of very large (18" tall) pieces of petrified wood that are still in the yard along with a large file of smaller stuff. Also, over the years I have driven the road along the tracks and I've been to the mine and up Fish Creek recently.
Thank you so much for sharing that information in history. I’ll have to check out the southside of the roadway and see what I can find out there. Again, thank you for sharing, Joe.
Can’t think of a better way to spend the holidays- rocks, minerals, beautiful terrain and sweet solitude! Thanks for sharing and happy 2025 👏
I love being with my wife, children, grandchildren, and friends. But there’s something beautiful and spiritual of being alone in solitude in a gigantic desert wilderness. I always come back a better man on these trips.
This is great. I have a quest since my fiance's birth stone is peridot and I want it on my wedding band. Would be even cooler to find the actual stone to go in the ring and this gives me an excuse to go explore that area more.
What is the purpose of the gun?
Joe, great job again. I watched this right after watching Shawn Willsey's latest live Iceland drone flight. Very complimentary. And The Mojave Desert is so cool.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’ll have to check out the Iceland drone flight - - it sounds really cool.
Lovely scenery, an excellent campsite, and engaging infographics as always! Thank you for your work!
Beautiful scenery, extremely interesting locations, very helpful info-graphics and super cool holster! Thanks for putting this together for us!
Outstanding presentation! Heading out soon to experience the beauty!
Thank you for putting this together. As I hiked up each rock all i kept thinking is what Alien created this. Amazing to know its phelpar and quartz.
Nice video Joseph. Wishing you a lovely weekend 😊
We tried camping out there with friends in about 1989/90 in the spring and the wind was so bad we couldn't keep out tent up so were had to move into a motorhome. Was probably full of water most of the time until the Younger Dryas.
Thank you for sharing that story of Clark Valley. It can definitely get extremely windy there within that valley.
As a geology nut, I love your videos. Also, I really like & used the same tune for one of my own videos!
You have great taste in music - - great minds think alike 😂!
Love the Alabama hills, can you do a video out by the reward mine! Been going there since I was a kid. Went there a couple weeks ago and my friend found a button made of shells, we think it's from the miners there back in the day.
You always set up camp in the best spots. Love it!
Never heard of this place. Reminds me a bit of Valley of the Moon in the SEC of San Diego County.
I was just thinking of hiking my metal detector back there, hoping to find some coins or artifacts... so you suppose it's worth the effort? Or is it all detected out?
joseph! I have the same tent! I hope you are doing well, I watch all of your videos . I am always happy to see you are responsibly armed and protecting yourself when outside. God bless and happy Rockhounding! I know a good area near san Diego to find fire eye garnets if you're interested.
You have good taste in tents: fair price and durable! I would love to hear about the garnets. DM me at joeloveslori@gmail.com. Thank you for your kind words, Joe
Thanks for the tip, I’m always looking for new places to go. I’ll see what I can do!
good video, thanks for bringing us along for the ride! Teaching provides you with good time to travel during the summers!!
I've been there! Glad to see that I'm not the only one who appreciates out of the ordinary attractions in out of the way places.
Very cool!
The rumor has it that it’s reverted back to the bureau of land management. But honestly, I don’t know. Great question hopefully somebody out there can answer that!
We discovered this place accidentally when looking for an alternate rounte to bypass the 15 which was closed. It became a regular stop for my boys and I when coming home from Calico camping trips. Got to meet Elmer a couple of times too, such a kind soul. We are going to create a bottle tree in our front yard in Wyoming, a small tribute to the master. Always loved the unique toppers for each tree too.
Thank you for sharing that wonderful story!
Is it for sale? I don't have any money but I'd live there? And upkeep? 😅😊😢 Thanks for the video. New sub
I hope somebody like yourself purchases the property and protect it for perpetuity! Thanks for sharing, Joe
How remote was it? Lemmi tell ya. I grew up (such that I did) in this area during the 70s. Kept up ties to lots of friends until my father died in 2017 by which time the economy coupled with the politicians scattered my family and friends to the winds. Used to spend lots of time in the tri-cities. I was _Today Years Old_ when I first learned of this place.
Great work!!
Thank you! Cheers!
This is a great idea and execution, Professor Wright. This should be shown in every geoscience class in SoCal.
Thank you for your kind words.
Now this is a trip all Geo. freeks should take. Take plenty of water, gas, maybe atv, and please take it slow and unhuried. The say of the Californios in Los Angles is, "RIDE LOW ... AND DRIVE SLOW." From about red rock canyon on there will be places every 2 to 3 miles along you will be intching to chase after something.
Thank you, sir.
This lake had water dec 2010-mar 2011
The Bible says in Genisis 1:24-28, that God ceated the land animals on the same day he created man, on the sixth day of creation. So you are wrong, man and dinosaurs DID co-exist. You have chosen to believe a lie about the age of the universe and earth.
Dude, the Bible is a collection of fantasy stories. You have chosen to believe a lie that has no basis in fact.
I used to walk here and recorded my first song in the house right there.
Wow, that is really beautiful story. If you feel comfortable, is there a link or way that we can access that song? I think it would really add another layer of beauty to Lonnie Coffman’s legacy and the history of that property. Regardless, thanks for sharing that story.
Brilliant idea and awesome production! Ted W
what an excellent presentation! this is what is wrong with YT viewers. the guy that posts himself picking his nose gets 800k views, and the other guy that puts weeks worth of research and work into developing slides, photos, and meaningful geological information into his video gets about .001% of the views.
That was an awesome vid! Amazing how much they got right, and wrong. Definitely had a geologist working on the design team for some of those.
Ha! Great idea. And I've seen all of those formations.
Love it! I never woulda guessed Disney put that much effort into making their fake rocks look real!
Gorgeous! There is so much beauty to be seen not too far from us!
Nice video and views. I'm hoping this next fall/winter to explore some areas near Fonts Point, looking for those elusive ancient animal bones as well as the cool geology.
Be sure to post her pictures and share with the rest of us!
Absolutely stunning views! I would love to visit there sometime
