Fonts Point 2-day Geologic Backpacking Trip

Friends, this trip captures everything I love about backpacking: beautiful vistas, stunning geology, and incredible sunrises and sunsets. This two-day backpacking trip to Fonts Point in the badlands of the Anza Borrego State Park is one of my favorite trips. Nicknamed California’s Mini-Grand Canyon, it’s best viewed at sunset and sunrise so that its deeply cut and intricate ridges cast bold shadows (sunrise was my favorite). Geologically, Fonts Point is made of soft sedimentary rocks of sandstone, silt, and mudstone, and were once part of the Santa Rosa Mountains between .5 to 1.1 million years ago. These sediments contain fossils of Pleistocene animals, which include camels, horses, ground sloths, and mammoths. During my geologic exploration, I found a small but beautiful segment of a fossil tree branch. I setup my base camp a half mile east of Fonts Point on the canyon’s rim to enjoy an amazing view of the canyon during the sunrise. The total miles hiked was 10.5 miles, but the trip can be done in as little as 8 miles (I did a lot of geologic exploring). The site can be accessed by 4WD vehicles, and I wouldn’t recommend 2WD vehicles because of the potential of getting bogged down in the soft sand. Nice video and views. I'm hoping this next fall/winter to explore some areas near Fonts Point, looking for those elusive ancient animal bones as well as the cool geology.
