The Transformation of Opening to Darkness
In this video, I invite you to explore your relationship with darkness. Drawing from my experiences and the wisdom of Zen teacher Zenju Earthlyn Manuel, I discuss how opening to darkness can help us embrace the unknown and expand our ability to love. It's not about eliminating fear, but learning to sit with it and grow from it.

This video is GOLD!
Very helpfull thoughtpattern ♥️
Minimalism, as a lifestyle, holds the promise of decluttering not just our physical spaces but also our minds. However, an obsession with being minimalist can inadvertently create another form of ego. The focus shifts from “having too much” to “having too little,” and this conscious choice can become an identity we cling to-potentially contradicting the very simplicity it seeks to embody. Moderation is the real key. Instead of fixating on what we possess or lack, it’s far more liberating to transcend this duality altogether. The real importance lies in our temperament, our nature, our conduct, and how aligned we are with the ultimate objective of life. Material possessions, or their absence, are insignificant in this grander perspective. Leo, I sense there may be some confusion in your understanding of the ultimate objective of life, and I’d love to discuss this further. If you’re open, we can have a 1:1 conversation to explore this concept deeply and arrive at a clearer understanding. sarabjeet@sarabjeetkhurana.com / +91 9911766400
This is uncanny. Just in the last few days I was thinking deeply about this topic again.😊
' Hi leo - I've had one e-mail thread where you been able to reply back to me direct in person, had idea "worth maybe try contact leo explaining my situation" about joining your F living academy - can you reply? " s
With my fears, I’m in! Thank you. 😊
This is a deep one, Leo. It started out pretty straight forward. My notes say engaged vs disengaged but then when you expanded on it, I felt like there was bunches more that I need to think about. I am going to let this sit in the back of my mind and watch this again in a few days
I felt like this today and I felt like if I just spend hours upon hours setting up GTD. The only reason I have resisted is because I did that countless times. The only way out of overwhelm is start doing your tasks. Just begin and in 20 minutes you will be fine.
Thank you for this message.

Leo Sir my Practice is not going well . I have understood how can i Make my hard task easy by watching am i on or off state as you previously mentioned. But i get distracted by distractions, Sometimes my mind says i should be a youtuber , sometimes my mind says i should study . I get distracted by my thoughts. How can i remove that. By the way i noticed that you are not editing your videos well and not making Attractive Thumbnails .so that's why your videos not get viewes as they deserve. And you should start your video with hook . Like Showing the most important thing in short and then title and then video starts . And you should use best editing and B rolls etc. that can make your amazing videos get deservable views. By the way plz reply to my problem
Really useful and simple in a way, today felt in a very closed state, time to practice for that first week as much as possible, thx Leo !
🦁
I'll give it a try. I remember being very revved up many years ago after reading Anthony Robbins' Mind Power but alas, I was unable to keep the feeling up forever.
It's a big challenge - keep practicing! 🦁
' I found this hyper link from Leo's E-mail listing - I am eager to try to contact Leo in person , trying to implement his full system, " is it also worth that I have already tried to contact him directly in multiple ways ?
Hi Timothy ... what can I help you with? -Leo
@@zenhabitsofficial 'Oh wait- you now , im now able to see the first comment I sent, where B said she couldn't see it "
The states of open vs. close sounds very similar to Su-kha and Duh-kha from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras
Agreed 🌺
I"ll Start practicing it from today and will tell you the results after 2 weeks ❤ Thanks my god
Amazing!
Oliver rocks! Finitude...the ride. No response needed ; )

Hey Leo, Very insightful video! Thank you for that. It came at the right time for me!🌼 I realize that I'm running myself to the ground. I already am my own doctor (due to the type 1 diabetes I've acquired in 2007) so being my own trainer and make room for recovery time shouldn't be that complicated. Allowing my self to recover is something I'm struggling still 😕 The basics for me (the bare minimum) are: 8h of sleep, eat at least one cooked meal. Nice to have: working out, going out for a walk, seeing some friends. These days I haven't reached the bare minimum 🤕
Thanks for being so committed to taking care of yourself, even though it's such a struggle. Sending you love ❤️
Great video again Leo! It’s been a while I follow you first with your books and recently transforming my life as a minimalist with your apparitions in The Minimalists. I try to transform all aspects of my life as minimalism as possible and tasks is a major one. It’s too easy to be anxious and overwhelming by tasks we “have” to do and tasks we want to do. Love the fact that you use Obsidian. Wondering if you use it only on your computer or with the sync plugin on your phone for example? And if only on your computer, how do you handle the quick capture when you are out of reach of your computer? I think for me what help the most to know what is the most important things is to ask for each task “why” I would have to do this task. Or, if I don’t do it, what would be the consequences. I take those advices from Ryder Carroll the creator of the Bullet Journal, Simon Sinek with Start with the why book, also the UA-camr Nathaniel Drew and Productive with a purpose website. Thank you for those recent videos series. You help me a lot to refocus what is the most important in my life in a way few people can. I’m a great fan of everything you do. 😀
Thanks! I appreciate our shared love of minimalism. And yes, tasks is a big challenge. :) I use Obsidian sync so that I have it on both of my computers plus my Android phone. That helps me with quick capture, it's just a couple of taps to make a new note or get to my daily note. Thanks for sharing what works for you regarding important tasks & the Why of each!
Excellent - as always! Dr Tara Swart (a neuroscientist) has also just posted a valuable instagram post on the 7 types of rest… clearly the time of year when many of us are starting to struggle🙊
It's so important right now! Thanks for sharing.
Great information and suggestions!
😍
I'm in burnout 😢 thank you for this! ❤ No one taught me that resting is ok! I actually struggle to rest 😢
Sending you love as you lean into rest!
I always start with that positive innerstate but then things get in the way and I get to a point usually getting ill and then give up! How do you keep that momentet going?
It's tough! You just have to notice when you give up, and then take care of your emotions. Then get back into the positive inner state. Keep practicing!
I read your blog years ago and it really helped me out of a bad spot back then. I'm in a worse spot now ':D so I'm ecstatic to have found you on UA-cam. Thank you for all your help <3
Thanks for sharing that! I'm so glad I was able to be helpful when you were in that bad spot. I'm glad you're here!
MY BIGGEST INSPIRATION LEO BABUTA SIR . I WANNA SAY YOU SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER. SINCE I WATCHED YOUR VIDEO ON PRODUCTIVITY , MY PERSPECTIVE OF LIFE TOTALLY CHANGED . BUT SIR I WANT YOU TO TELL ME WHY WE
That really means a lot to me, thank you! Your last line got cut off btw
@zenhabitsofficial How we can Be disciplined like a souldier. Cause after watching your video i overcome from from my distraction nearly 90 %. But sometimes I say myself that ok it's life and sometimes we should take it easy and I end up scrolling 1 hr . 2. Why my willpower changes from library to home just like I am so focused and dedicated in Library but when I come home my mind says ok it's night so I waste my time playing with my siblings and eating , watching Tv a bit.
He is the og on minimalism from a time when Lifehacker was an interesting website.
Pathologies of Time. That's so interesting as a phrase. Thank you, as always.

Hi Leo & Mike. This was an incredibly valuable podcast for me. 🥰 Mike, at the risk of giving you a laugh, you're me to a tee! 😱 WOW, mate!! You spent 53-odd mins describing, in detail, EXACTLY how I most like to live & work. And I did operate like this for years & years - decades. Then ill-health started to screw things around... And across maybe the last 8 to 10 years, everything about how I most like to set my life up has slowly, one little segment at a time, eroded into mush. With some surgery coming & the opportunity to turn a couple of pressing health matters around, the timing couldn't be more perfect. Watching this podcast was like a really powerful refresher course in Being Me! THANK-YOU both so much! 💜
Glad it was valuable! :)
I am reading 4000 weeks now.
Great book! Let me know if you find anything valuable.
RESPECTED LEO SIR I am an indian boy, whose life you have changed. I was 14 when i stuck into this whole loop of masturbation, procrastination , self confusement, overthinking . I pretended myself that I am a smart genius and brilliant student but i was not . Whenever i used to go to study i just think like oh i should make my room clean and make my study table good . Then i used to make study plans and to do lists , i used to change daily wallpapers motivational. And always do nothing except watching porn , nonsense youtube videos, and like this i got failed in my examination for which I was preparing. I shameless person didn't Stop on that, i just kept doing it till i start watching this video. And if i really tell you i just started watching this video just to say myself that ok I have seen this video and now today I have done something meaningful and from tomorrow I will study but You changed me forever. You broken my whole EGO . you are my GOD . I WILL BLESS YOU FROM TODAY , I WILL FOLLOW ALL YOUR ADVICES , SAYINGS . SIR REMEMBER THIS NAME HIMANSHU, ONE DAY I AM GONNA TAKE YOUR NAME ON A BIG STAGE IN WHICH I WILL ASCRIBE YOU FOR WHATEVER I HAVE DONE . THANKS MY GOD . I AM NOW FEELING PEACEFUL and now i am out of that prison Now I don't fear anything. I will be brave I will kill that uncertainty with compassion like you said just give a warm hug to that kid .❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sadly the book is not still on Amazon. There is a broken link on Mike’s website 😢
Yikes. Thanks for letting me know
Thank you for the great video, I would vote for making a video about anger and how to deal with it
Thank you! I will take that to heart
This is why I closed my business. I was absolutely sick and tried of freelancing. I did it all - shared work spaces, office, home office. As someone with ADHD, those 4-5 years were like moving mountains daily. I was my most efficient and fulfilled when working with a team 8-17 and I went through a real interesting journey to really understand how I am wired. After I closed my Business, sold some assets I built, I was so eager to return to the office life, but then war came (I am Israeli). And then I got pregnant with my first child (im 32 weeks in). So I really really cant wait to return to the office. :) I really need that structure, the social aspect of being part of a team, and having someone above me to lead and guide. It takes a lot of courage and humility to find your way in this confusing world 😅❤
Thanks for sharing!

Hello, Leo. I took the Sea change course and it helped a lot on my journey through minimalism. One Saturday, during a web conference, I sent you a question in the comments box, and you said my name and responded. I was very emotional: "he said my name"!!! You are a great inspiration for many people in the world, including me in Brazil. Thanks. Please, go on.
This is so moving, Marcello. I'm so touched by your comment. Thank you 🙏🏽
Really helpful and deeply inspiring

I liked the part about ego and fear, but this isn’t my experience. For instance, a lot of my procrastination is I have too much to do and limited energy! So yes, I can be mindful and announce that I’m exhausted and trying to self-protect, but I get stuck at the act of “turning to the task.” It’s like when I turn to the task, I’m going against my need for rest. While it would be ideal to problem solve the workload, there are times this just isn’t feasible (e.g, too many demands at work, childcare responsibilities, limited social support, and of course, income restrictions.) How can I honor that my procrastination is rooted in my desire to feel like my tasks are happening FOR and not TO me (i.e, flow state versus freeze state.)
Sometimes we just have to feel like things are happening to us, and that it's not in our control. Can you surrender to that feeling completely? Like letting yourself feel washed out to sea. This act of intentional surrender is the first step in taking back some authorship in the situation.
@@zenhabitsofficial wow that’s a terrifying thought, surrendering to the pressure. I’m new to your work, but started reading The Power of Less. Do you have any podcast or video recommendations that can help me with this idea of surrendering? Thank you so much for the response!
We have a professor in Lund, my home town, that has written a book about time. In that book she says that not all time is procrastination before you start a projekt or work you need to do. She calls the time before you start for adjusting time. Your brain needs to adjutant to what you are going to do. The adjusting time is different for different people and also different for a person depending on what is needed to be done. She says that your brain is starting to work on Horton tackle a job even if you are in front of the Tv instead of doing what you think you should. Then when the brain is ready you feel like it is time to start. If you force it before your brain is ready the outcome won’t be as good. How do you react to that claim??
What is the name of the book?
@@Zverre1 It is Bodil Jönsson 10 tankar om tid. It acctually comes in English too. Ten thoughts about time!
It's beautiful 😍 There are times when this slowness serves us. And others when we can decide to consciously shift out of it. It's not always easy to discern which is which, but just being aware of the possibility that your professor shared is important 🌺
@@zenhabitsofficial I think so! When not wanting to do a mundane task but rather watch Netflix. Procastination for sure. But sometime you just can’t get to start something you are unsure of how to tackle. I have several times been in the garden weeding or doing other things and after some days like that, I suddenly wake up and just know how to do it! Even if I haven’t consiously thought about it! To think that we sometimes need time for our brand to adjusting to a new thing and to not beat us up but thinking it is a part of the process is good!
@@evalindell2757 😍
Great advice! I like the root cause-identity part. But what about resistence towards simpler stuff like chores or exercise. Does that also have an identity component or is that more about avoiding discomfort?
Is there a part of your identity that resists doing chores or exercise? There could be a way of seeing yourself that means you can't handle the discomfort of those things, or can't find joy or play or wonder in them.
