    HEY CARB EXPERTS; i just bought a 76 F150 with either 360/390 2 barrel carb auto with driveability problems; SYMPTOMS; it had no heat riser under the aircleaner springloaded flapper it also had a brake light on in dash and weakish non power brake feeling also had a badly cracking brake boooster hose also had an off idle stumlwe/hesitation that could would stall if not carefully feather accelerator. has broken ex manifold bolts and leaks exposing soot shooting out, same for exhaust, its leaking and noisy and soot oozing out SO i replaced the brake booster hose hoping to fix the brake light AND off idle stumble TLDR; it didt, it made things worse actually, idles poorly now and stumble is worse did more inspecting underneath and found rear brake hard line crushed and leaking which backs up the master cylinder being low on small resevoir for back brakes i couldnt see in Carb to see if accelraotr pump works but it sounded like fuel squirting when i pumped the throttle Accel pump linkage seems stiff and instantly engages with throttle movement SO whats first thing to start checking carb out to fix idle and off idle accel stumble?

    My 64 Galaxie with the 352 and autolite 4100 runs great. I've adjusted the idle mixture screws with the vacuum gauge and a tach dwell meter. If I turn the screws in the engine stalls. I have them about 2 1/4 turns out. After that it seems the idle does not change or get rough if I keep turning them out. No vacuum leaks, timing set correctly and curb idle set to specs.

    my parents bought a brand new 1977 Ford f15 custom truck. it was white with red stripes on the side. I was 1 year old. they put a big camper top on it that u could stand up in. lot of memories riding in that truck. my dad sold it in 1987. my aunt and uncle had a blue and white 1976 bicentenial Ford truck. my grandparents had red and white 1977 Ford truck. my uncle had a green and silver 1979 Ford ranger truck. as u can see I grew up riding in Ford trucks including one more truck my dad bought a brand new 1988 Ford ranger blue truck and had to let it go back a year later.

    Friend don't you have a garage to keep that in. Nuthin ain't gonna start when it's 0 Farenheit outside. Put it in a garage and cover the hood with a blanket. Remove the blanket before starting, but it would b much easier 2 start. Damn. Those old wagons were very very good and very very reliable. But 0 degrees? Ain't nuthin gonna go without some help.

    All that cranking and near zero oil flow is not good for the engine. You should install a block heater and oil heater, this helps hugely. Zero degrees fahrenheit isn't that cold up in Canada. Thats only minus 18 Celsius and we BBQ and have beers in this kind of weather. You may catch us runnimg aroud in shorts and a heavy hoodie.👍🍻 that wagon looks good.

    U flooding it😅

  • @michaeltutty1540
    @michaeltutty1540 5 місяців тому

    One of the issues you are having is that those multiple pumps on the gas means you are flooding it. Put your foot to the floor and hold it. That stops the gas fkow to the carb. That beautiful wagon is either a 400 or a 460. I've had 2 351Ms in 78 Ford Thunderbirds. At -30 and ecen colder my old Ford cars always started first turn of the key. Even the 76 Thunderbird with the 460 that had been sitting for 2 years started on the first tutn if the key. I can tell by the sound when it catches that the choke is miles out of adjustment. I'm betting the idle mixture is all messed up too. Fixing the choke takes no more than a couple of minutes. It is painful to hear that engine struggling like that. Be careful because you likely have gas in the sump. You have almost certainly washed any oil off the cylinder walls.

    • @classicgarage9548
      @classicgarage9548 5 місяців тому

      Did you watch the whole video? The part where it showed the choke frozen shut? Or the part explaining that isnt usually how to start it? Engine cant run without air. Aka the choke never opening. Yes I know how to clear flooding. Doesn't work if there is no air.

    As a 70s kid, I remember cold starts could be a real issue. Sub-zero temps meant all the hoods would be open. Those carbs were finicky! EFI saved us a lot of problems and quite a few starters 😂

  • @dogge929

    I have one of these in a 1974 vintage. Mine starts every time, within 10 seconds, because of a simple modification I made. I removed the linkage between the throttle and the choke, and then ran a manual choke line to the dash where it is mounted. Pull the choke all the way out, push the throttle clear to the floor and hold it, then start the car. Let off of the throttle halfway to three quarters until oil pressure is built, while setting the choke to one half. Once the engine has ran for approximately 30 seconds, fully release the choke while easing up on the throttle to make sure the engine doesn't stall. Sit with the car for about 5 minutes before leaving to be sure it doesn't stall, or that the carb doesn't ice up. Let the vehicle warm up to at least 160F (if you have a 180F thermostat) before driving the car. This will let the carburetor get up to operating temperature, and the oil to flow more freely. I put a 300 straight 6 into mine. It was a LOT easier to start with that single barrel Carter YF than any quadrajet or Edelbrock, especially in the negative temperatures.

    • @cj6017
      @cj6017 6 місяців тому

      I put a mid-'70s 300 in my '85 F-150 to replace the failed original. It had a Carter 1-BBL and points-type distributor. My first winter with this engine, I discovered keeping the EGR working properly is the key to preventing icing up, since it directs some hot exhaust into the intake just below the carb. Older versions actually had a spacer which coolant ran through to prevent icing, which I could've fitted, however cleaning my EGR valve did the trick.

    • @dogge929
      @dogge929 6 місяців тому

      @@cj6017 Mine has a small damper inside of the manifold that closes when the exhaust in cold. It helps to warm up the intake quickly. If the temps get too bad, I'll probably throw some tin foil over the intake to direct incoming air through the manifolds.

    Spray up the cylinders with some Fluid Film or some other metal rust preventative, so it doesn't rust deeper into cylinders.

      Engine needs air to run. Did you watch the entire video? It explains how something was wrong/what was wrong and why it wasnt starting. It wouldnt run because the carburetor butterfly was iced shut. This is also explained in numerous other comments. Look at any of the other videos of this car. Never have trouble starting it. I use the factory technique and it works fine until something goes wrong.

    My truck will run but will eventually stall out and then will not start I suspect a vacuum or vapor block from the gas tank. Could the vent at the gas tank cause this?

    • @classicgarage9548
      @classicgarage9548 7 місяців тому

      If you open the gas cap and hear a suction "woosh" its possible. However it sounds like yours is flooding. Maybe too much gas. Carburetor float not set right, needle not closing. Etc. Choke not opening. Carburetors are way simpler than people give them credit for. However they are hard to explain in a simple way. When it stalls, will it start by holding the pedal all the way to the floor? If yes, its flooded. If not, maybe rust in the gas tank.

    My 400? - ONE pump - starts - idles - beautiful. Flawless every time. Here it is guys, it's how they are cared for, and how many past owners they have had. People do dumb shit to cars (because they have zero clue) then a lot turn into dog's breakfasts. To buy an immaculate classic car with MINIMAL past owner quantity is a godsent. Cheers.
