The fact that we’re having an argument over it proves that premise. But it wasn’t a simile anyway because it wasn’t of a different type category or kind as the the person he compared Hague to was within the confines of English writers the general subject of literature and vernacular.

Gwasgray I believe (but I could be wrong) the joke is that Gordon Brown, who had only recently become the Prime Minister after 10 years of Tony Blair's rule, was satirically about to lose his post to Blair as he was considering the post of President of the European Commission. In reality, a British EU president would be in an ideal position to influence British policy to the benefit of the UK but at a cost to the Prime Minister's influence. On a serious note, he's generally talking about the increase in power of the EU over individual countries, which the Conservatives are very cautious about.

You need to know what day it is, and what is your bottom, rather than your elbow. I despise the tories, but this is oratorical genius.
