My Christmas Display: Review & Conclusion. Happy New Year!
I tore down the Christmas Display today, but thought I’d share a final review and conclude this series of videos. No worries though. After I get everything reorganized there will be more videos from me here at Hall of Science West. Thanks for watching, but most importantly

American Flyer: Variations of a #696 RR Crossing Track Trip

IMPORTANT! I made a mistake in this video! The small button trips is actually an early version from the 1946-47 era. My apologies. But I still hope you enjoy the video and see the differences between them.
My Christmas Display Layout: Electrified to Steam Engine Change on the Polar Express
Переглядів 206День тому
I’ve always been fascinated by the electric to steam engine change by the Pennsylvania RR at South Amboy, New Jersey. Early on GG-1’s changed power with Pennsy K-4 steamers and later on with various diesel power for their commuter trains. I figured the transit authority in New York at Pennsylvania Station wouldn’t allow a steamer into the city even if it is the Polar Express so Santa contracted...

My Christmas Display Layout: Leveling the Grade on American Flyer Trestles
Переглядів 40028 днів тому
American Flyer trestles set up normally are generally trouble free, but in special circumstances, such as those used on factory display layouts occasionally present some problems. Here I use some extra trestles and shims underneath them to make a steady grade for the train to run on. This helps locomotive make the grade with more cars and helps with potential derailments, especially near the ed...
My Christmas Display Layout: Opening Night Tour & Operation
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Місяць тому
Well, I made it for opening night. I was up until 12:30 the night before getting everything wired up and ready to go. I still have more to do before the show closed on December 31st so there will be additions and things added before the end of the month. I hope to do a few more videos before I have to take it all down. I’ll film that too. It’s sad to take it all down, but you know what…I’ll get...
My Christmas Display Layout: American Flyer Trestle Help for My Repro #28141 Factory Display
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Місяць тому
The Christmas Display is progressing nicely. I completed the track on the repro #28141 factory display track plan. The use of trestles on these 4’x8’ track plans are problematic because the trestles are so close to the edge of the layout board and often require large gaps between trestles to cross lower tracks. The track often sags to the outside of the corner which can derail or drop your trai...
My Christmas Display Layout: Top Attached & The Polar Express in Action

Here I have the two 4’x8’ boards attached to the top of the Mianne Benchwork (www.miannebenchwork.com. My layout top is constructed with a 4’x8’ piece of tan soundproofing wall/board screwed to a piece of 3/8 inch plywood. The top is screwed to the Benchwork with the angle brackets supplied with the Benchwork kit. The soundproofing board really eliminates the thrumming sound found when running ...
American Flyer Polar Express Berkshire Locomotive Initial Test Run

An initial run of a new American Flyer Polar Express Berkshire locomotive. This was originally a short but was pulled by UA-cam so this is a regular video although short. I hope to do a more in depth review of this engine in the near future.
Assembling Mianne Benchwork (for my Christmas Display Layout)
Переглядів 226Місяць тому
Apologies for the poor sound quality. The hall is large and echoey and I had difficulty adjusting the sound and time lapse doesn’t work very well on my video editing software. Here I assemble some modular Benchwork components from Mianne Benchwork in Massachusetts. The system goes together using cabinet bracket components and a very large layout can be set up in a relatively short amount of tim...

Mom and I had fun watching your Choo-Choo videos! Sad to see your layout come down, but there is always Christmas next year! ❤
It is sad to see your Christmas layout come down but it will be nice to see it again next year. You had very interesting items on it including the fire tower and your painting of the mountain scene. Bob Ross watch out! Now you have all year to plan for the next holiday season and what additions/modifications to make. Thank you for sharing.
As usual, another great video Richard. Please keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing your next video.
Really enjoyed this. Thank you for doing it.
Enjoyed your series of videos of your Chtidtmas layout. I look forward to next years layout. Thanks for the mention of the 3D printed holster for the FlyerChief controller! I'm glad you found it useful.
Your videos encouraged me to work on my two log loaders. I have a yellow base one and a black base one. One thing I discovered is that the yellow base one is much quieter popping the logs into the carrier. That vertical solenoid is not as violent as the one with the solenoid mounted under the base.
Awesome! It’s a really fun accessory. The yellow base one is the early version from 1946-47. They are a little rare and are subject to getting the yellow paint on the base scratched off. I really like using mine though as it works so well. Have fun!
Great layou! Thank you for sharing. 👍🇺🇸
Just wanted to clarify something, the small contact is the earliest version. The plastic longer one came out later.. The first track trip was a 695 that was activated by brass buttons on the early 1946 engines. However that turned out to be a costly mistake as they could only work on a 587 block signal or 588 semaphore. Those signals were never made in 1946.
Thank you Lonny! I guess I assumed the small button trips were made later, but I got it reversed. Thanks for filling me in on those early small button trips. That’s probably the reason they don’t show up too often. Oh well, I’m going to keep my eyes out for more of the small ones. They just seem to work better.
Great video Richard, always interesting information.
Good information and demonstration. I had the points arc and get stuck once and nearly had a fire in a Sam the Semaphore accessorie.
I literally had smoke coming out of this bell danger signal. I’m not sure if it was the magnet wire or the tape over the solenoid, but luckily I caught it in time. The bell and lights still worked. I’ll bet Gilbert repair stations were working on these type of repairs a lot.
I don't recall ever seeing one with the short contact. I think I have seven installed on my current layout and they are all the long version. The long contact on one of them does not sit parallels to the rail, so it either doesn't activate, it it sticks with the lights on. It is the closest to my control center, so it is the easiest to correct.
I honestly just found a few of these in a box from my Uncles collection I inherited and had never seen them before either. I thought it might be useful for operators if there are issues with the long contacts which seem to be more common. Hopefully it’s a useful video.
Nice switching action. That is a lot of Yule Logs being pulled up the trestles. Happy New Year.
Not bad for a little Atlantic, but I admit it needed a little 0-5-0 helper to get over the crest of the hill, lol!
A very nice operations video. That GG1 has a brilliant chrome finish. Beautiful.
@@flyerjunction American Models makes some beautiful equipment with sound too. I just didn’t have the control set up to activate the sound.
What a great American Flyer "around the Christmas tree" display, Richard! So much fun! Maybe this should be an annual tradition??? 🚂🎄
@@KrissyB-z9o we’ll see if they want me back next year. I envision another 4x8 panel or two lol! Gotta dream big.
I can't wait to be able to finally buy the S Gauge Polar Express once I move, it's such a nice Locomotive
Nice axtion!
Looks great.
SWEET! ❤ KEEP THEM COMING! 🚂🇺🇸
That's a fun layout you created. Good times.
At first I thought it was limited for actual operations because it had only two switch tracks for the whole layout, but it can really be fun. The tracks and wheels are getting dirty after a month of running so there was a lot of frustrating starts and stops so the video is heavily edited. That’s still part of the fun though.
very nice brins back memories
What a great idea to do the slow-motion video to get realistic sounds!
Yeah, it's sad when you have to take down the track and train. I have a small set-up on the dining room table where I work/run my trains on these rainy days. I have 3 more setup tracks in the garage, but it's kind of cold out there. Plus, I haven't got a table where I can work on trains because all the Christmas stuff is still waiting to be put away. Thanks again for your videos
I’m in the same boat. I have a couple of 4x6 layouts I play around with, but have the same issue of being cold out in the garage. I’m happy I got this space and was able to put something this large together. It’s the biggest layout I’ve ever built. I still have fun with the smaller ones though. Thanks for checking out the videos and have a great New Year.
Another great video Richard, too bad there is damage or missing parts. At least the engine runs well.
Wonderful job getting it set up and pouplated.👍👍👍👍👍
Fun video, Richard. I really enjoyed it!!!
This was fun to watch. Also neat to see the circus set. The blue wrappers might be oil absorbers for the garage
Too bad it's not A.C.Gilbert trains running. Flyonel ain't the real thing.
@@ronalddevine9587 There is some heavy truth to that, but they’re growing on me. I need to break out some American Models stuff to keep it even.
Stunning. A great display.
I have good memories of running our childhood layout with my sister. Thanks for the video.
I didn’t because they kept wanting to run them! I was pretty selfish with them back then. That was one of my biggest regrets as a kid. I’m not selfish with them anymore, especially with the sisters. I’m so glad she came by to run her trains.
Great fun layout Richard! A joy for the whole community to share in. Merry Christmas to you and yours!!!
What a fun layout and so cool your sister joined you! Merry Christmas!
Love it!
Another wonderful video Richard, you do a great job in your presentation. Please keep up the good work. Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year.
@@FrancesHolguin Thank you! More to come. 😁
Your last upload I mentioned loss of traction on that gradient - I bet that was why the train lost traction then struggled for the rest of the gradient. You might not be needing that frog snot now! Track beds even just a fraction out are a nightmare to spot but often too easy to rectify. I share from my own personal mistakes, my experience and cost, no matter what gauge you use, the use of track gauges and researching maximum gradients are an absolute must. Happy Holidays!
@@BigRed-dr6we I think that’s how we learn on model railroading. I dumped a 290 and a caboose off a trestle layout in one of my earlier videos. I caught the engine luckily, but the caboose got smashed. It’s definitely worth the effort to make the track as smooth and level as possible even on a temporary layout like this. Your comment and many others I found on UA-cam made me take a closer look. It’s good to share our mistakes and learn from them. Thanks! (Although there might be a frog snot trial in the future, lol!). Merry Christmas
Nice job!
First comment 🎉
Now that is what I call a gallery! It sure would be nice to visit your display in person. You did a really nice job on the layout and have lots of nice pictures to see. Can you make a video of the All Aboard layout in operation? Can you give more details about the USFS fire tower? Was it custom made or perhaps kit bashed from an AF tower? The Christmas diesel has replaceable rubber tires that may need changed out. I would try cleaning the rubber with some isopropyl alcohol first. I believe that engine was produced in about 1995. I enjoy putting mine out on the holidays. Happy Holidays and thank you for sharing.
Thanks for commenting on the display. I do hope to get the All Aboard system running in a video along with some “how-to” info on quieting it down when the train runs on the plastic panels. The fire tower is a custom job found for me in California by my friend Dale Smith of www.americanflyerdisplays.org fame. I think this is a Lionel or Marx tower but not sure which one. I also hope to have a little salute to your channel with some stop action animation based on a couple suggestions by my 7 year old granddaughter. Stay tuned for more and I look forward to your next stories!
@@HallofScienceWest Thank you for the information. I look forward to seeing your All Aboard layout in operation. I also look forward to seeing the video inspired by your granddaughter. There is an app called Stop Motion for iPhones (not sure about Android) which works very well and has some nice tutorials on how to use it.
Great job Richard, wish I could be there to see it in person. Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Nice job! Saguache is one of my favorite towns - the buildings are great! But my favorite is the USFS fire tower.
@@dmprimus It has a special place in my heart too lol!
wonderful layout. merry christmas
@@thelazyfishkeeper2730 Merry Christmas!
Well done. Thank you for sharing, and for keeping American Flyer in front of people.
It’s the perfect holiday train layout/ platform!
Looks so nice! The perfect size layout! I used 3/4 plexiglass for my Christmas layout. I made mine 10” high to help keep the little ones out.
@@TwistedMacGyversTrains I’m taking a chance with just the little 1x4 border, but being this is an art gallery and the layout is supervised when running I’m not too worried about it. I like to keep it interactive with the billboard whistle button in reach of young and old kids alike. I’m more worried about the train taking a flying walinda off the edge, hah! Merry Christmas.
I know exactly what you mean! Merry Christmas! 🎄🚂💯
Well done Richard! This brings back the best memories of Christmas when we were kids on Calhoun. So happy you can share your lifelong hobby with everyone! ❤
7:46 We have that same picture at our club. Seems like all the HO guys at the club last weekend had more fun with my little 4x8 O gauge setup than they did with their own stuff. Considering going S gauge next year if I don't decide to run 3 rail HO instead, assuming we haven't closed the club down by then.
Detlefson did some great train art. I remember looking at this and thinking about making a train just like this out of my American Flyer cars. Merry Christmas! Best of luck to your club too. Hang in there.

@10:50 look online for traction tyres. Small rubber bands that go on your loco wheels to prevent slip.
Might be some Frog Snot in my future. Merry Christmas
