Ryan Dunn’s 3-Point Surge & Cody Williams Finds His Groove: Preseason Rookie Report
In the 5th installment of the Locked On NBA Big Board preseason rookie reports, hosts Rafael and James Barlowe break down the latest standout performances from the weekend.
Ryan Dunn continues to impress for the Phoenix Suns, transforming into a dangerous 3-point shooter after struggling in college (23% from deep) and the summer league (1-13). Dunn hit an impressive 6-of-11 from beyond the arc against the Nuggets, and the Barlowe brothers discuss his rapid improvement.
Cody Williams’ assertive 17-point game against the Spurs also draws attention, as Rafael and James debate how his consistency and confidence will determine his success after earning the nickname “Cadio Cody” for passive play earlier in the preseason.
Donovan Clingan’s double-double in 18 minutes against the Kings highlights his strong interior play, but Rafael humorously calls for more power in his finishes, while James emphasizes the importance of Clingan sending a message to defenders in the paint.
The Barlowe brothers then break down Memphis rookies Zach Edey and Jaylen Wells’ performances against the Bulls, where Wells led the team with 26 points and Edey added 15. They discuss their chemistry and whether Wells will force his way into the Grizzlies’ rotation.
Lastly, they review the weekend performances of Jared McCain, Bub Carrington, and Jamal Shead.
Ryan Dunn - 1:36
Cody Williams - 7:48
Donovan Clingan - 12:12

Spent a decent amount of time watching Dunn pre-draft due to him basically being a lock as a long term high-end player if he develops a jump shot. In these preseason games a few of his makes almost seem like close to being misses. I like to call these confidence makes instead of pure skill makes; sort of something that happens within the progress of a players shooting ability. Just something to pay attention to. Also, it seems like he shoots the ball better when he doesn’t have to think about anything and just pulls immediately off the catch with any hesitation.

Jazz have too good of a coach, too much stability, and too much talent to ever bottom out and get high lottery odds. They need to just get lucky in the lottery no matter where they land. Atlanta and Houston got the luck the Jazz needed the previous draft. Too much luck involved to worry about draft position, unfortunately.

Caleb Foster is running point, not Tyrese Proctor. I would put him in as another lock to start. He's looked far better than Proctor has in the preseason. His speed and ability to put pressure on the rim are really important for Duke. This isn't just speculation on my part either. I have it directly from someone who was at practice the other day that Caleb brought the ball up 85% of the time. Obviously, Tyrese and Cooper both ran some halfcourt sets. But Tyrese is actually playing more as an off-ball movement shooter this year. I was at Duke's Media Day a few weeks ago and Scheyer specifically said he wanted to use Tyrese that way. And then I attended Countdown to Craziness, and that's exactly what I saw happening. As for Khaman, he probably starts because of optics and politics. But I have real questions about his understanding of the game at this point. He can block shots, get putbacks, and grab rebounds because of his size. But he doesn't understand basic big man skills like how to set a screen. The guards are having to heavily direct him, and he's STILL not sure where to go or how to time it.

8:17: Alex Sarr vs Jaren Jackson? No way!. Sarr is 7'1 and 19 years old. Jaren Jackson is 6'10" and 25, I mean I can't even imagine Alex Sarr at 25. Paul George Compares Alex Sarr to Giannis Antetokounmpo Giannis Antetokounmpo is a prototype of how a modern-day big man should be. Greek Freak’s robustness combined with silky ball handling makes him a two-way threat that Paul George sees in Alex Sarr. “I like the Giannis comparison, I like the Giannis that is one of your favorite players because I kind of see a similar play style with the ability to get it off the rim, push and transition, handle it, create. I think he’s like him. Giannis is the prototype of a big man that you play through. So I love that comparison. I think he is a lot similar to how Giannis plays, in the style of Giannis,” said Paul George during the podcast.

Im not here to argue that dickinson is an elite rim protector but to say his defense is “one of the worst” is not correct. In 2023 Torvik ranked KU defensively at 13th. In the start of 2024 season we were 12 with elmarko jackson at the 2. When conference play started an we went to a more offensive lineup with furphy and timberlake it dropped to 19. I think the drop has more to do the guards creating defensive lapses that Dickinson couldn’t erase at the rim rather than lapses by Dickinson.

What are yall talking about, Sarr look like a bust. He was wildly inefficient. He scored 12pts (5/14 - 35%), 2 threes (2/6), 3 turnovers, and -25 NET rating. The biggest thing w/ Risacher that people miss is he's HUGE. That's his ++ "skill". You can't put a plodder on him because his trigger is too quick. If you go small eventually he's going to punish smaller defenders. I think he showed that in summer league and in preseason game 1. I think being PF size (it looks like he's going to fill out) is going to make him a chess piece.
