We got a Malinois mix dropped on us. She has bonded with my elderly mother. She is pretty goofy and not necessarily aggressive. Chases the cats a bit but may also be in cahoots with the one eyed foul mouthed old lady black cat, Alice.I have been worried a bit with her around my grandson, but she has never showed any type of bad behavior. She jumps up, a lot, especially when someone arrives back home or goes outside to call her in. She has scratched me pretty bad, even though we keep her nails trimmed. We are training her, but that particular bad habit is very difficult. I’m afraid she will knock my mother down. Any suggestions of how to stop this behavior would be appreciated.

Thank you so much. I need to be more firm and clear. My nine year old son complains about nipping puppy biting. He doesn't stand tall he laughs and pushes our dog away, which escalates things. ⁠yes you nailed it. You’re absolutely right about not training for the average person your dog to be aggressive. It already is aggressive. If you do train them for guard or actually just a bite it’s important that you’re off switch or command is even better than the bite. That way you know you can always control that animal turn. The Malinois has high prey drive . Prey instinct coverts to a game with rules where you can shut off aggression. For those of you who don’t understand what prey-drive is visualize a group of wolves, tearing the guts out of a running deer while it is still alive and eating it. That’s how different these animals are to us. They truly are vicious. 😅

I tipped my mums dog on the nose and put him into the bathroom he was biting my neice, I said no, you don't bite Lola, he was very beautiful, a big fat hairy mammoth, but he did as I told him, children used to say look a teddy bear, he was, until he was protecting some one😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Excellent advice. I have had a pair of Mals for many years and am now training a new pair. I got the female first and spent a month bonding with her and then got a male from another breeder. I strongly suggest this method. The only thing people don't want to hear is do not get a Malinois if you are a beta personality and do not get a Malinois if you can't give them the freedom to exercise most of the day. My dogs live off leash on 10 acres and that is why they are not destructive and listen to commands. I don't spend much time training them because they know boundaries and are fast learners.

I have a 10 month old malinois/lab cross and she is a heck of a lot of work, but she’s worth it. We are working through the biting, and the little licks after I correct her have meant she hasn’t been made into a coat yet 😅 only joking - I’m firm but fair with her and really appreciate your advice! Have a Beagle/JRT mix that had the energy of 5 dogs. After we walked the neighborhood, dropped our Boxer mix off at the house then got the bike out. Now are you done? Ugh. And any type of class we went to, if i exercised her with just a walk, it just charged her up. We've done agility in the past and are now doing Rodeo Dog - so fun and much easier on my memory. Fantastic. Thank you for this. Have just adopted a 9 month old lab/malinois cross, and she is the sweetest girl but - oh my gosh that bark when I don't do what she wants!.. Lots to think about here. She listens to my stern 'no' or even just a stern look when she's contemplating something like jumping on furniture, but my correction just doesn't have the same impact when it comes to barking. I think I am already getting some parts of this whole thing right haha, but I'm going to follow this advice from start to finish. My Willow is sitting quietly at my feet now and was just a calm little angel when something stressful happened in the house a moment ago, so she has been given extra treats and told even more than usual how much of a good girl she is!

Hello, I’m from Mechelen (in French Malines) Belgium. The city where the Malinois is named after. A little "did you know" for the history: did you know that the breed started in Rijmenam a little village not far from Mechelen. In a castle called Weyneshof. It still exists. One of the founding fathers lived there. Now it ’s a summerplayground for kids witch parents have to work during the summer vacation. I worked there myself when I was young in the 80-ties. I need help with a dog I am fostering at the shelter. I want to make him more adoptable, but he has a major toy addiction( resource guarding). If I was able to take home until adopted, it would be easy since everything would be his, and he'd be isolated fronall the triggers at the shelter. So, this situation is unique and new to me, and I'm not sure how to help this Malinois. Would appreciate pointers! I do have experience with Malis as I've owned before and had him until he passed. But I have never experienced this due to him being in a permanent and loving home.

I've only been doing the bite correction with At At for about 10 minutes now and my girl is already acting like a different dog.

My Mal, when told no a d to sit when she jumps up, just gets more and more excited when I tell her no and ask her to stop jumping and to sit. It's like she goes into a frenzied, like mode, best way to describe it) and keeps jumping up. She scratches you and then begins to nip and bite your arms, hands, clothes, anything she can grab with her mouth. I ha e to physically wrestle her to the ground to het her to stop and hold her there until she calms down. It's so frustrating. I've had her since she was 8 weeks old and this behavior has to be the most challenging one. Also her constant obsession with the cat she has grown up with. The cat isn't safe around her and I always yell her no. Ni would like her to get to the point where she doesn't even attempt to do these things in the first place so I can stop reprimanding her. Will she ever get it?

Hmmm. Me thinks this video has much exaggeration. Yeah, the dog is a handful. And, you should know what you're doing. But this person takes it a bit too far. If you want to get a Belgian Mal and learn to own it in a healthy manner, then go for it. Have a great time. They're great dogs.

Thank you for this video. I have 2 young malinois that I am trying to train and the jumping up has been a difficult one to break. Another issue I would like to correct is the obsessive continual focus on the cats and not listening to me when I ask them to leave it. One of my dogs will drop to the ground and toll on her back upon correction. Do you have videos on that?

I babysit my son’s 10 month old malinois at my house 5 days a week. Today my brother came and the dog has never met him. The dog bit him twice, getting his clothes and not breaking skin. She was barking in a threatening manner and I crated her for safety. She also bit one of their neighbors. So she’s ok with her own “pack” but not with strangers. Not sure what to do with strangers who may come.
