Insuring Permanently Attached Equipment
It’s no secret, the vehicles that tree services are utilizing today are becoming more specialized and more important to the overall success of the company.
Almost every vehicle that a tree service operates has some form of permanently attached equipment now. Whether that is the traditional forestry unit or a knuckleboom crane, the value of that truck with the attached equipment is obviously much different than what it was when the cab and chassis was rolled off the assembly line.
Because of this, you should know what options you have on how that truck can be insured.

Cost New - Business Auto Insurance
Переглядів 162 місяці тому
A common question we get asked is what does the “Cost New” value mean on my Business Auto policy? If you look on your Business Auto insurance declaration page you will see a dollar value listed for each of your trucks and trailers under the heading of “Cost New”. This number is an important underwriting guide for the insurance company from an insurance pricing and claims standpoint. It does not...
What to Expect from Your Business Insurance Agent and Agency
Переглядів 82 місяці тому
Many times we hear tree services refer to their business insurance as a “necessary evil”. And while there may be some truth to that, the tree care companies that actively engage with their insurance agent quickly realize that having the right insurance partner is actually a “necessity” for the future success of their company. I’ve often advocated for tree care companies to think of their insura...
Positive Risks

Until now, all of our risk management articles have been centered around avoiding, minimizing or reducing risk within your tree care company. In simple terms we usually look at risk as a bad thing for your business and since we are an insurance agency who wants their clients to run safe businesses and get every one of their employees home each night that makes sense, right? However, I feel the ...

Using subcontractors for some or all of your labor within your tree care company can be a smart strategic move for your business, however, it must be done correctly to avoid opening your company up to unnecessary exposures. 5 Tips to Become a Champion Recruiter

Did former Alabama Head Coach, Nick Saban become the country’s best college football recruiter overnight? Of course not. Did he benefit from the history of the Alabama football program? Of course. But what really set him apart during his time at the helm was how he made being an Alabama recruit the ONLY thing that a blue chip high school player could think about. I know what you are thinking, g...

Elements of a Safety Program

Most tree care companies have a written safety program or Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) in place, however, we often get asked, do we have everything we should in our written document? What do Corn Flakes have to do with marketing?

You know, the flaky, curled, corn-like cereal that people have been eating for almost 100 years. So, how does everyone know what Corn Flakes are but not what Bran Flakes are? During the Great Depression in the 1930s, people were limiting their spending and the breakfa...

    Could I still privately drive an LLC-titled and insured vehicle tax wise and insurance wise?

    • @arborisk4835
      @arborisk4835 7 місяців тому

      Yes you can drive an LLC owned vehicle for personal reasons and the LLC auto insurance policy will cover you, however, the insurance company will want to know if you are doing that regularly so they can build that into the rates.

    A LLC can be designated to be taxed as a S Corp. You have to pay yourself a normal salary, but profits beyond that (distributions) can be taxed at the lower capital gains rates.

    Great question! You could add a simple line or blanket statement saying that additional work requested may require an additional charge. If your initial proposal is detailed enough, it should be clear what your customer is paying for before any of the inevitable additional requests come.

    What do recommend with cutting branches (normally big), after branches are cut customer is asking for more, more, and more. Which is time & money. How can you word that in the proposal with out making the customer feel uptight about service.

    It's a myth that you can be OSHA compliant. If an OSHA inspector wants to fine you, they'll look hard enough and will find something, no matter how safe your company is and how many safety protocols are in place. The only sure way to avoid all OSHA violations is to shut down a business entirely.

    • @arborisk4835
      @arborisk4835 2 роки тому

      Thanks for your comments and I agree that an OSHA inspector can probably find something despite your best efforts, however, I don’t believe that means you should just give up and not try to comply with the regulations or worse yet just close your doors. It’s management’s responsibility to do whatever they can to comply with OSHA regs, which are there simply for the safety of every individual within the company.

    • @4.0gpa44
      @4.0gpa44 2 роки тому

      @@arborisk4835 What my point was that you can emphasize safety, and that should certainly be done, along training and providing good safety equipment. However, people talk about OSHA compliance as if it's obtainable. While employers should be mindful of OSHA regs so they can avoid obvious violations, OSHA can fine you for normal activity, such as having loose ropes in your truck or at the shop. So there's too many rules (thousands) for even safety consultants to keep track of. This was the same agency that had to be reined in by the Supreme Court when it tried to impose an unconstitutional vaccine mandate. OSHA will exceed their legal authority whenever they think they can get away with it. The emoloyer's solution to OSHA is twofold: a safety culture, along with vigorously litigating all alleged OSHA violations.

    I am not really sure I followed you but let’s me ask you the question or put my situation as a case: My company doesn’t have a “company car” for me to use doing the company’s business. I have to use my personal car for that and off course, the company is willing to pay the mileage for. My concern is that I heard lots of things like “once I use my car to do a business trip”, “my personal insurance for the car doesn’t cover it anymore”. You mentioned buying extra liability, can you elaborate on that? And secondly, if I buy that extra coverage, would the company pay for it?

    • @arborisk4835
      @arborisk4835 3 роки тому

      Great questions. When driving a personal vehicle for work you definitely should check with you personal auto insurance company to make sure your policy will protect you. Depending on your line of work and how you use your car a new policy may have to be written.

    • @arborisk4835
      @arborisk4835 3 роки тому

      It depends on what part of the country you are in and what duties the ground person performs. Some companies pay ground workers in excess of $25/hr because they run equipment, help with rigging and overall are crucial to the job. I believe most start in the $15-20/hr range. Hope that helps.

    This is some of the hardest work and steps that is almost never done in a business. People often only look at end of the year numbers on a financial level and then think about sales for the next year. Goal setting combined with what steps you're going to take to accomplish and then creating metrics which is step #5 to gauge how it's going is crucial. This is the real hard work that when not done in a business leads to failure sooner or later. It's easy to make money and loose it with no consequence when its flowing in abundance but when it's not and these measures are not put into place the doors can close quickly. Most people who own a business really own a job and work in their business because that's all they know. Truly innovative and successful businesses, their founders and owners will tell you the day they started working on their business and not just in them and the day they put their Ego on a shelf and reached out for help was the day they took the first real steps toward the success they now have. That's the stuff people on the outside looking in never see. They see the success of today and often don't know that those successes started out with an intention to admit weakness and get some guidance. Glad Arborisk and it's team is here to help!
