LAKE DISTRICT - Grisedale Pike and Coledale Valley - MLD Duomid, FIRST PITCH
Last minute wild camp to try out my new tent, the Mountain Laurel Designs Duomid.
It was forecast to be windy, but to clear up in the evening so had hoped for a camp with some epic Lake District views. How wrong I was!
Definitely not that enjoyable, but it's all good experience and it was a new area for me to dip my toe into. 100% I will return ( with two poles !!!)

Wild Camping location in the Buttermere area of the Lake District. This small fell gives you amazing views for a very small amount of effort. Unusually I pitched up early and just took it all in, giving myself plenty of time to relax ( though most of it was spent chatting to the locals who dropped by, they might even have got an olive or two off me if they were nice!) Didn’t stick around for lo...

A stunning walk right up the Eskdale valley up to Esk pike. After Tongue Pot and Lingcove Bridge, I trudged my way up through the bog and bracken, with the Scafell range to my left, Crinkle Crags to the right and Bowfell ahead of me. Didn’t see a soul until I got up to Ore Gap. Bagged Esk Pike and then dropped down to one of my favourite places to pitch up for the night. Woke up to another glor...

A leisurely stroll up from Grasmere village to be greeted by views of FOUR lakes! This was the day after the summer solstice ( and my birthday) The weather wasn’t much to write home about as I settled in for the evening, but the following morning was glorious which can only mean one thing…get the drone out! A wonderful spot for a short walk or better still, a camp!

I walked up the gorgeous Eskdale Valley in the Lake District from the Woolpack Inn campsite. A so followed the river Esk, I passed numerous waterfalls and plunge pools. Turning right and ascending after Lingcove Bridge, I set up camp in the shadows of Bowfell, Crinkle Crags, Esk Pile and had the Scafell range in sight when the flag intermittently cleared! I hiked up to Catbells in almost Spring like conditions before retracing my steps and bumbling up to Maiden Moor where I pitched up for the night. The following morning I went up to a snowy High Spy before dropping down to Borrowdale via Tongue Gill and the old quarries, ending off with a pint. Bliss!

Hike up to Glaramara in perfect winter conditions, with the night spent by High House Tarn. First run out for the Terra Nova Pioneer 2 on the fells. Bloody marvellous! One of my best camps yet with fantastic views all around. With Great Gable, Great End, Esk Pike and Bowfell being most prominent.

Glencoe - WILD CAMPING IN THE LOST VALLEY
Came here from the FB group this looks beautiful ❤
It’s a rightly popular spot. Gets very busy in the summer though! Thanks for watching ☺️
Now you have the perfect excuse to return to what is an absolutely beautiful area. I carry a dedicated pole and use Hiking poles, So have redundancy. Also think about double poling the shelter in wind, helps massively with the stress on the centre pole. I've had poles bend in the wind before, quite fascinating to watch 😂 I'm off out this weekend, weather looking it's normal daftness, see how I get on. Well done for rescuing a camp ⛰️🏕️👌
I always take two, but only had a single Alpkit one from a previous trip where I’d forgotten to take them. ( My Fizans aren’t long enough either) I didn’t really fancy a second one as seen some poor reviews and didn’t have much confidence in the carbon tarp pole they do either. Fancy something more robust looking ( Leki Sherpas maybe?) I’d also already bought a couple of Voile straps as well to bind two together. I have confidence in the tent, can’t wait to try it again and will definitely be back out that way with the views I’d hoped for ( forecast said 80% chance of cloud free summits for this one) probably go up from one of the other ways though now I’ve done Grisedale Pike. Have a good camp this weekend, think I’m sitting this one out. Thanks for watching and the advice 👍🏻
That was a well deserved beer mate. Bad luck with the pole snapping but at least you managed to get it repaired and still get a camp in. Tent looks mint mate colour proper pops. 🤌🏼🤌🏼 atb mate 👍🏼
Cheers pal. Yeah I love the tent. Like that you only need one pole to pitch it but will always take two in future anyway, that was a daft mistake to make 😂 Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Cracking video mate, even if you didnt get what you wanted you still saved it. Ide be reacting exactly them same if that happened to me, the excitement of getting out in a new tent then bang, ruined, but atleast you still got to haha. Very entertaining mate, keep them coming 👌🏼
Cheers pal. Yeah definitely could have been worse, might need to save the new tent for better weather, but would have been absolutely fine I’m sure with better pole 😩 Thanks for watching.
It’s not a loss mate, it’s just the way it goes sometimes you still hiked and camped. People don’t realise how tuff this is in good weather never mined bad weather. Alpkit poles are crap mate had some years ago only lasted a few months before the clamps broke. That’s not a sewage plant its water treatment for the village below, very strange place force crag mine, haven’t been there for about 2 years. Just got back from Keswick actually went to whinnlatter forest yesterday with my lad the weather in the lakes at the moment is utter crap blowing a gale and pouring down we’ve ended up coming home and we was on a campsite near Keswick. Fix ya pole get back out there. 😎 atb Karl
Thanks for the words of encouragement mate. Could have been a lot worse, but positives are it’s a new area for me and I’ll always go back somewhere if something wasn’t quite right, so it’s just extra motivation. I’ve got fizan compacts but had issues with them sticking in the past as they’re twist lock. Gonna invest in some Sherpa Leki’s or similar I think 👍🏻
Tent looks ace man. Love a good MLD. To fix your lanshan inner if your pole isn't at a height of 125 then it will be saggy so I before you hang it off the roof I tie a knot in it and that will pull it taught. Hope that helps 👍
Yeah I can’t wait to get out and try it properly. Was looking forward to sitting out in the vestibule space and chilling out with hopefully some epic views. Not this time unfortunately!
Pleased you managed to salvage a camp!
Hate bailing though it will happen eventually I’m sure!
We almost bump on each other second time that day🤭
I know, what a coincidence!
Rannerdale Knotts looks amazing. Top tent too. Subscribed, as a fellow Fjällräven user!
It’s a really cracking spot. Love my Abisko, of all the tents I’ve had and have, it’s ticking the most boxes for me 👌🏻
@boolay75 yes, I have the Abisko Lite 1- maybe a touch too small but superb construction
Excellent vlog, New subscriber
Nice one cheers mate! And thanks for watching.
A platter? That’s a bit posh for camping mate.. haha. Camped there myself last year but was on t’other side. Cracking video Dave. 👍🏼
Haha, I’ll take a platter every camp from now on! Thanks Rich, been thinking about jacking the UA-cam in, but we’ll see. Maybe I’ll just keep them shorter, think that’s the way to go. All the best mate.
@@boolay75 Ya joking, how come man? I enjoy watching your vids you’re putting out some really good stuff. Hope you decide to keep it up mate. 👍🏼
@@Northern_Rockhopper just wonder if it’s worth the effort sometimes mate, though every now and then I’ll watch some of the old ones so they’re still a nice way to document memories for me. I might not film my next trip and see if it makes much difference.
Amazing views dave !
Indeed. Thanks for watching young Gog.
Lovely to meet you mate! Cracking video aswell, lovely spot to camp up there ⛰️
Ah Cuan, so glad you watched it! Like I said, you're so lucky to have that on your doorstep.ATB mate.
@@boolay75 I'll be watching them all from now on 😂 sure am mate, get yourself moved up 😂
Beauty little spot mate, camped there a couple year back, conditions weren’t as good as yours though 🤣 some nice drone footage pal, keep them coming 👌🏼👌🏼
Yeah cracking spot and pretty much perfect conditions, I was very lucky. Thanks for watching mate.
Being a fellow Abisko lite 2 owner I like the idea of the little clothesline across the rear vent, I'm going to copy that one and take advantage or the full through draft for small items 👍🏼
Yeah it’s handy. Thought about getting the gear loft as well but don’t need it really. ATB mate.
Love that area I haven’t been around Buttermere for a couple of years now. I remember camping up there, needed to bag it as i wainwright, beautiful spot but was kept awake until early hours with a local farmer hay bailing in a field near by and going up and down that road below in his noisy tractor 🚜 😢 When you was using the DJI Mic was that via bluetooth or with the receiver plugged in? the mic definitely cuts out nearly all the wind noise. I can’t decide whether to just buy the mic or mic/receiver combo. 🤔 ATB Karl 👍
It was a cracking camp. To be honest I only went up as I couldn’t get WiFi in the pubs in Buttermere, and needed a signal, but very glad I did anyway 😀 It’s the DJI mic 2 mate that connects via Bluetooth. I used to have the DJI mic and the receiver but this is much less hassle with the osmo action 4. You do have some pairing issues, especially if you’re changing devices, but all in all best mic I’ve had by far.
@@boolay75 Nice one thanks for the info. I think a single mic via Bluetooth is the way forward for me keep it simple. 👍
Nice one mate appreciate that. I’ve been using the DJI Osmo action 4 for a couple of months now. It’s great . The chest rig is an Osprey one and yeah you’re absolutely correct, I use it to store the drone, plus my powerbanks and cables etc. I’ve used a couple of others, this one works best for me as you don’t have to attach it to your backpack. ATB mate.
Another great Video pal, just found your channel this week and already watched most of them. What camera do you use for your Timelapse’s and what the chest rig you use? Is that for your drone and camera gear? Cheers mate, keep up the good work. 👍
Remember a few years ago being just off the summit of esk Pike eating me lunch, weather was doing its usual 😅 across and up and over to Scafell Pike for a bivy camp in the square shelter. Great video, nostalgic. Not been over that way since last September 😊
Fantastic area, that had a nice remote feel to it. I actually loved trudging around the bog and making my own paths up.
@@boolay75 across the valley from 3 tarns to Broad Stand is a total bog fest, waders needed 🤣🤦 when it's wet. But it's a lovely area 😁
Great video dave
Cheers young Daniel. Thanks for watching.
What a campimg spot, love it, them drone shots are awesome proper great catch of the area, i need to have a go at doing a time laps looks mint, great camp😁👌👍
Yeah it’s a cracking spot, got a bit of everything. Thanks for feedback mate and thanks for watching 👍🏻
That’s some trek from the NT campsite to Allen Crags Dave well done mate. Loved the time lapses nicely done pal. I camped around there last November plenty of nooks and crannies to pitch but I ended camping next to one of the tarns. I get asked ever time I’m on that stretch to seathwaite farm for Scafell Pike it’s a joke mate 🙄 Atb Karl 👍
I ended up bog trotting up there, hard on the legs but loved it! Watched your video going up to Scafell that way….that’s next time!
@@boolay75The Great Moss valley is one of my favourite places very remote and usually quiet, you’ll love the scramble up fox’s gully, look forward to the video. 👍
@@TheSummitexplorer69 it looks quite straightforward going up foxes gullly, think I’d prefer it to lords rake, what’s the path up Cam Spout like?
@@boolay75 I've don't it in winter and summer both times boggy under foot try to cross the river around cam spout area. If you go pasted fox's gully to mickledore and then down to lords rake which is a great scramble and if your feeling brave go up the west wall traverse. Only reason I go up fox's gully is to collect water at the top from the tarn, so I'm not carrying it up lords rake.
Drone shots are just amazing my friend!
Too kind. I forgot to change the settings to 4k but still turned out ok I think! Thanks for watching mate.
Alreet Dave, still haven’t been up that way yet looks like there’s a few decent places to pitch. Belting sunset as well. 👌🏼
Hey up Rich, hope you’re well mate. It’s got loads of places to pitch and always overlooked so quiet 😃. One of my favourites.
Wind! The Wildcampers nemesis. 😂 looked a right slog that one. Nice video mate.
Yeah, I don’t know what it is about that area but I just didn’t get any good vibes about it! Sheffield Pike was a nice pitch though, if only I’d have gone there in the first place!
Looking at this myself. The only thing that puts me off to be honest is the inside height (not, strangely, the price). I'm also considering the cheaper option of the Terra Nova Pioneer, or poss the Wechsel Exogen 2, which is a better suited to the non winter months . I'm 65 and I've had enough of crawling around trying to get dressed in low tents. It will primarily for solo use and Cycle touring with the occasional mountain trip in good weather.
I’ve had the Voyager 2 as well, good tent, but similar sort of problem in that the headroom tapers off at one end . Definitely more spacious in the abisko though, especially lengthways.
Great video, good hike shefield pike😁
Anything with Pike or Crag in the name are usually quite interesting places I find.
Good video . Think I would of made the same choice . Sheffield Pikes a more interesting Fell anyway .
Yeah I love places like Sheffield Pike. Not really into huge grassy fells. Why I’ve always thought summit of Helvellyn is a bit overrated as well.
Class vid mate - shame about the wind and cold but that’s the lakes for you. Had an awesome camp up on Watsons Dodd a couple of years back but it was 30degrees and not a cloud in the sky 😜😜
Yeah would have been cool if I could have had a wander around and have a chill out as the views were pretty good towards Skiddaw and Keswick. I probably won’t go back though unless I decide one day to complete the Wainwrights, should have done Great Dodd whilst I was up there dammitt!
I notice you mention hip pain, I take a small inflatable pillow for in between knees when side sleeping, worth a try, Im waiting for my new hip lol, had one done, Game changer for sure :)
Thanks for the tip. I’ll try it next time!
I must admit when I picked my summit I was factoring in a few things, great views, not too high in case the clouds dropped in and a high potential of a signal. You definitely sounded like you had way higher wind than we felt on ours. Great video bud. All the best
I should have done the same in retrospect! Having said that I changed from Pillar to Esk Pike, to Watson’s Dodd and ended up on Sheffield Pike so they got lower and lower!
@@boolay75 oh yeah, pillar would have been really exposed too. I had 30mph last time I was on that and it was brutal
Cracking video mate, we were up on Nethermost Pike, nice seeing the clag on your video from down below 🙈 enjoyed it mate, ATB 👌🏼
Thanks Callum. I’d have been fine on top but I made a bit of a selfish call tbh as it was obvious it was going to clag in looking towards the west. I’m guessing you guys couldn’t see a thing from about 9pm onwards!
Nice one Dave, definitely the right decision to drop down, weather definitely wasn’t the best but was a great weekend, Atb Alan
Sure was mate. Looking forward to the next one.
Loved the cooking in a tent section. Very impressive. I'm seriously debating buying the Pioneer 2 as a Year round Bikepacking and Backpacking tent. The concerns I have from reading reviews are 1. the inner is too flappy? 2 The corner pegging points are not very good! 3, You get a lot of condensation! 4. I also concerned it might be too warm for summer camping ( This is a major reason for getting rid of my current tent + its tiny). What are your thoughts? what do you think are it's strengths and weaknesses. I was also looking at the more expensive Fjallraven ABISKO Lite 2 which I noticed you also have. How does that compare with this tent.
Hello mate. The Pioneer 2 is a really good all rounder. It’s got its pros and cons as you’ve mentioned. I’ve not really had any issues with it apart from when you pitch it can be a slight faff, you’re right there’s something a bit odd about the corners. In comparison the abisko is a far better tent and worth the extra money if you can get the b grade option that I’ve got. Appreciate it’s £150 more but the quality, ease of pitching and options mean it’s worth it for me.
@@boolay75Thanks for the prompt response and sorry to push the point but how do you do with the height of the Abisko? On some video of it the people inside seem to be bent over as though it's not very high. One of the things I hate with my current tunnel tent. It is in fact the main thing putting me off the tent. PS I think I can get a B version abisko shape for a good price if its not too long)
@ianmatlock1 it’s lower at the tail end for wind resistance so not great headroom there. Vestibule end you’ve got a decent amount of clearance though, I’m 5’11 and can sit up comfortably even on a mat. I did like the room in the pioneer, it’s just right as a one person tent.
You took a tactical decision based on safety first. No need to ask the question.
only if a fail if u do go.
Silver Howe absolute stunner nice vid 👌
Thanks Gayle. Beautiful spot isn’t it.
@@boolay75 yeah love it up there I’m currently waiting for the rain to stop teeming down so I can get from car to house glorious Northumberland weather lol
I’ve seen your posts on a Facebook group Gayle. Total respect for you!
As I said on the chat safety first. Was a chilly night, I put my gloves on ⛰️🏕️🤣😁
It’s a strange one. If I’d have stayed at least I’d have been able to get in to wine a lot sooner 😂

Don’t you prefer the TN 2 to this one mate? 🍺🍺
They’ve got a lot of similarities so I couldn’t keep both. I kept the Abisko though because I’ve got the option to double pole it and pitch it all in one in, but I loved the Voyager as well. I’d have kept both if I could have afforded to 👍🏻
Thanks Anthony. Watson’s Dodd, didn’t quite work out. You’ll see soon anyway, will be out next week that one:
Great way to celebrate your birthday Dave 🎂Loved the opening shots, Silver Howe is blessed with some stunning views! Have a great time on Watsons Dodd👍👍
