NEW ADDITIONS.WALTZ for DEBBY, UHQR DISCUSSION , UNDERRATED LUCKY THOMPSON MICHAEL MULLER CLASSICAL
In this episode we talk about the new UHQR, 'Waltz for Debby" and if its really possible to replicate the sound of the venue itself on some of these amazing new masters. Lots of folks comment that the recording "Sounds like you are there in the room" is that possible?
We show some recent discoveries by saxophonists Hank Mobley and Harold Land as well. I talk to a Japanese pressing of Shelly Mann's "Live at the Blackhawk, VOL 4 followed by a record by my "Underrated Musician of the Month", Lucky Thompson.
Finally, some different music. First 2 recording on Deutsche Gramophone by Michael Muller, then a MUST HAVE for any classical library, Pictures at an Exhibition and The Firebird Suite by the Philadelphia Orchestra ( R. Muti , conductor).
Please cheek out the links below as well... GREAT INFORMATION THERE!

I’d like to see Count Basie’s “Me and You” and “Get Together” reissued. They’re both great albums but they’re quite pricey here in the UK (if you can find one). Both fantastic audiophile quality recordings from what I’ve heard. They even sound good streaming them from Spotify so I bet they would be awesome if Acoustic Sounds gave them the full treatment.

MCPS is not a record label. It stands for Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society. MCPS collects and distributes mechanical royalties to songwriters, composers and publishers when their works have been copied or reproduced. Mechanical royalties are generated when a musical work is reproduced onto CD, vinyl, DVD and Blu-ray, downloaded and streamed or synchronised into a TV programme.

Very good video Man. Lucky used to live in Lausanne at the end of the 60's beginning of the 70's, just near by my appartment. I have a lot of stories about how he was with people, the musicians, producers etc. One of the last musicians who saw him homeless in Seattle was Hank Jones, in 1995. He told me this when he just saw him, one week after. I don't think is so underrated because a lot of people still talk about him a lot. Every time there's a new release or reissue of him, the sellings are really very excellent. I think Harold Land is really very underrated but not Lucky.

Hi Jack, Gee The UHQR Debby is spendy. Luckily I brought the Tape Project version before the pricing for these tapes and postage from the US became insane. I did watch a review (Dave Denyer?) comparing the tape to the new UHQR and not surprisingly according to the particular reviewer, the tape was still the reference. Was Looking for some more Harold land and found this "Curtis Counce, Jack Sheldon, Harold Land, Carl Perkins, Frank Butler Quintet - Complete Studio Recordings. The Master Takes" looks interesting, will let you know what the performance is like

You're so, so right about Lucky Thompson, he was an underrated great, like Don Byas. But I never knew him to play alto, at least not on anything I have. On Lucky Strikes he plays tenor and soprano. Do you know of recordings I'm not aware of where he plays alto?

Great video as always 🙂 That release of Peckin' Time was released on a label called Rat Pack Records I have it in my want list, Rat Pack Records have released quite a few Blue Note records that Blue Note haven't re-issued

    • @reisserjean-michelakabeeth8551
      @reisserjean-michelakabeeth8551 2 місяці тому

Peckin' Time was released a lot on LP, 95 % in Japan. Rat Pack label is from Paris, France. I still don't know if they release their reissues (they do a lot of different styles of music) from the tapes. Seeing the prices they charge, I sincerely doubt that it comes directly from the tapes but they sound very good. For my money, I still prefer the japanese pressings from the 70's, 80's and 90's if you don't have the original ones (although it's not always the originals that sound the best, far from it, it's much more complex than that). With those japaneses, they all sound and are pressed fantasticly, in every way possible.

I think I mentioned before 'Basie and Zoot', which is probably the best record recorded for the Pablo label along with 'Duke's Big 4' and 'This One's For Blanton'. I bought these and many more ( e.g. Carter's 'The King') when they were new in the 1970s. The Tatum/Webster is a reissue from the Tatum Group Masterpieces from the 1950s, but a new issue of this is always welcome. I have this many times and in many versions and I will, if I can, acquire the new re-issue when it comes out. It is quite simply one of the greatest jazz records of all time with Ben not being intimidated by Tatum's masterful playing and just playing the way he always did to produce something magical. It is the stuff of legends. My recollection is that as the Pablo label went along Granz began to issue more and more jam sessions from Montreux on the label and the quality went down and became less interesting. That was how it seemed to me at the time.

Great video again Man. As I told you, yes, the last Basie big band's albums sound, musically, "tired" because the chief was ill. It shows us that Bill was really the boss. When he was in a good form, the band sounded like fireworks. When he was not well, the band sounded not precise, "tired" .... About On the Road, I was at the concert. They recorded in both digital and analog systems ! But Claude Nobs, the founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival, wanted to be the first man in Jazz to record his concerts with this new system, Digital. So he signed a special contract with Sony. They bought from Tokyo, just for the festival, this brand new digital machine. So Norman agreed because it was a really huge publicity for some new ways to record music on those days ! They sold a lot of albums because it was in Digital. That's why Norman put out a lot of those albums, written in big "Digital". But Claude recorded the concert with the usual equipment then. I have a copy of the analog concert and it's sounds 10x better than the digital one. I don't know if the original analog tapes are still around today ... I'm almost sure that nobody knows that analog tapes exist ... As I was there and a close friend of Bill, I can tell a lot about all of those things

The vinyl on these reissues is super quite as well. Anyhow thanks for listening and for you're comment. I really appreciate it.--JG PS--Just as an aside... I've never met Chad Kassem or have been to Acoustic Sounds, and in no way am I monetized or receive anything for free. Some folks are and thus tend to sometimes plug things that they receive for free. I buy everything I talk about and try to be as honest as possible.

Jack - thanks for covering off on some of these lesser known titles and artists. By chance I happen to pick up the Bob Cooper record that you showed a couple of months. I really didn’t know Bob Cooper at that point, but could not pass up a clean vintage Contemporary pressing by Roy DuNann (black label cut using the Westrex cutting head). Of late I have been into mono pressings (I use have a dedicated mono turntable with a mono cart), but these stereo Contemporary pressings are dynamite. Similarly I picked up an OG stereo pressing of Shelly Manne at the Blackhawk #4 for $7 (solid VG and plays beautifully) just a couple 😅f days ago and it sounds great! I look forward to more upcoming videos.

I like the suggestion of Terry Gibbs in a small group setting on Emarcy. Those albums swing so hard and the sound is so well recorded it’s like the band is right in your listening room. Shades of Ahmad Jamal live at the Pershing.

Hi Jack. Andre Previn, I hate the guy. Classical pianist extraordinaire, Jazz supremo, sense of humour, suave and charismatic. Don't you just hate that. 🤣🤣🤣 Just picked up his Shostakovich No5 on EMI. Sounds awesome. Great vid mate.

Great new features...I listen to classical also and I hope you will continue to talk about that a little bit. I have been getting into Ben Webster recently and am really enjoying that journey. I got a record called Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson that I have been enjoying. But I am definitely going to check out that Johnny Hodges record!

Jack, thanks a lot for your great videos. To tell you the truth, I don't understand when, suddenly, they reissued, some Count Basie last recordings which are not, very far away, on the same level as some others Pablo's before .... The 2 which are reissued there are the last to buy !!! The band sounds very tired and not precise at all. Those are very very dissapointing sessions !!! Better than that : all the tunes were on the book for decades, never recorded before. So they had them in the fingers as I can say but it's not at the top level as Bill used to give us, musically. As, today, we are into "the best sound quality possible way", the producers decide to reissue those. Come on !!! What about "I Told You So", "Live in Japan 1978", "On The Road", the 2 volumes with Milt Jackson, "Warm Breeze", "Kansas City Shout" .... Those are masterpieces to me. As you know, Bill was not in good health since the fall of 1981 and really, we all can feel it. The band sounds more loud, unprecised, more conventional ... This was no more the Basie band that I loved, revered for all of decades that we know .... I'm pissed of, sorry to say. I think I have all Basie's albums, about 500. Sound quality first, then the quality of the music. I'll never buy this concept ! All about money and money, sellings and sellings !!!!!!! Bob Cooper was one the greatest to me, sooo underrated because he didn't recorded that much in Jazz settings, very busy in the studios for composing and arranging and this is a shame !!! But we can't go back and do again the history. But boy !! He could play !!! Great arranger and composer. Jazz people don't really know about it, he did a lot for TV shows, series and movies, cartoons, when his name appeared in a very little characters .... A shame but that was a time then. Life, sometimes, isn't always fair enough. He was a good friend of mine, that's why I write those words about him because I know all the story. Do you know who put and arranged Victor Feldman's moving from England to LA and in the LA studios ?

I have the Bassie 88 would love the new KG mastered item but here in the land of blatant rip offs (Australia), the cheapest I can find a copy delivered is around the AUD $150 !!!!! will keep playing my old copy...ha ha ha. @@Jackgrahamphotograph Hi Jack, Thank you for your kind offer, it is very much appreciated. I think the only way this would work if I was to buy several items and consolidate them for shipping say 10 at a time or similar to minimise the freight charges. I would be more than happy to reimburse you as we go and for you to hold onto the items for me until we have a complete shipment. What do you think?
