WHEN SCOTLAND LED THE WORLD...IN WITCH TRIALS!
In the 16th and early 17th centuries, Scotland led the world in the persecution of Witches!
Over a one hundred year period, 6,000 people, mostly women, were charged with being witches, and were prosecuted in mass witch trials.
So successful was this form of judicial witch hunts that it was copied by other countries including England, countries in Europe and, ultimately, America.

People all over the world love seeing a good quality Scottish Kilt, but authentic Scottish Kilts were always hand-sewn. But recently I visited a school for kiltmaking here in Edinburgh, where anyone can come to le...

Fife is never mentioned much in Scotland as a tourist destination, I wouldn't say we see much tourism here compared to the main cities or the rural highlands and west coast. But there are quite a lot of historically interesting places, which includes Castles , Palaces, Follies, etc. and of course an abundance of Golf courses! This, relative, lack of tourists may be because it is fairly populated compared to some of the more 'picturesque' tourist spots but doesn't have any large cities. Although Dunfermline was the ancient Scottish capital and is 'officially' a city. Most tourist spots center around the villages and towns located around the coast like; St Andrews, Culross, Crail, and Anstruther etc, most of which are in the 'East Neuk' basically the headland. Although Falkland and Cupar are also quite nice. But it is worth looking at Dunfermline as well IMO. As well as road links (3 bridges) there are regular rail and Bus links from Edinburgh to Fife, with the trains going over the 'real' Forth Bridge and Busses going over the original Road bridge. It's worth reiterating that Fife is still pretty much unanimously known in all of Scotland as the 'Kingdom of Fife,' and not as a 'county,' not just by Fifers. Officially Fife is now a council area but you will get some weird looks asking for directions to the 'County of Fife!' Just saying 'Fife' would be enough!

I'm sure that you know fine well that the railway bridge over the Forth is known as, "The Forth Bridge" or, "The Bridge". That is surely why the the much later road crossing was called, "The Forth Road Bridge". The much more recent addition is of course titled, "The Queensferry Crossing" although it is the wrong side of the road bridge from where the "Queensferry" sailed.

    • @GarryGri

Wasn't it called 'The Queensferry Crossing' because of its proximity to the North and South Queensferry villages?

How could the pol eho fought with him morn his death whrn theyd been shipped to far flung vornors of the world by the mans enemies. They couldnt jump on a plane to rome to see the funeral. To make it like noone cared about him, ehen most of thensongs written about him came after his death, is false. Did we forget about the clerances an acts of proscription? Had he won, it would be a totally different video an we would learn of this great reclaiming of the throne in schools world wide. But he lost one battle. Which was all he needed to lose. An the winners, scared enough of the jacobite movment to commit genocide, write the history books the way they needed. To make sure toteach scots their enemies were idiots an their oppressors were their heros. How sad.

  • @Sonny-m1f

Makes me sad to see so many scots who have swallowed the propaganda about the prince hook line an sinker. The winners write the history books. Im sure culloden had alot to do with his alcoholism. He wasnt a italian buffoon. He was raised in the exiled stewart court by english an scots tutors. He had an english accent. That is hanoverian propaganda, to make him look a forigner while they themselves really were forighners. He gets so much hate for culloden but noone talks about how he won more battles than he lost. Recognize, the winners write the history books. Why would they teach u the defeated sides view? Especially when they are correct. Our ancestors werent simpletons who followed an loved the prince. They loved him. We have just been taught lies about him. Our ancestors knew he was the rightful king an they fought for him. A health to king James. 🦄⚔️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⚔️🦄

So glad you acknowledged John Knox, so often stereotyped as ‘narrow minded bigot’ along with his C16th Reformation contemporaries and turned into punchbags by too many of those sitting in the luxuries their vision bequeathed. Without the vision, strategy and legwork of the Reformation, most significantly through the legacy of “a school for every parish,” the C18th Scottish Enlightenment that exploded out of the most literate population ever known, could not possibly have emerged.

I'm a Robinson, my great-grandparents from Hamilton. My children are descended from Lord Thomas Cochrane from their mother's side so there's an interesting mix there. Many of my Grandfather's siblings moved to America in the 1800s and it is interesting to note that the family colouring ( fair hair and blue eyes) seems to be well-spread throughout not withstanding which Continent we live (I live in Australia as do my children) and which admixtures we have all through marriage. As an interesting anecdote, I was reading a history of the Reivers in the Appalachians and it was said the first thing the English would build was a church, the first thing the Germans would build was a barn and the first thing the Reivers (Scotch-Irish) would build was a still (whisky!). Apparently, upon the ending of the War of Independence, Washington led a large army into the mountains and had a mini-civil war with our 'kith and kin' in order to enforce the payment of duty. Cheers - The Robinsons (some of them anyway). PS really enjoyed your talk, thank-you.

I suppose the more apt comparison is not to the mythical "Wild West" of the 19th century, but to the Borderers transplanted to the 18th century backcountry of America where they practiced the same clan based border wars with the same kind of clan based warriors in the Native Americans from 1713 all the way to the beginning of the 19th century, in addition to clawing at each other in the first American civil war, that in the backcountry South of 1775 to 1783.

Thank you Gordon, very informative and well presented! I was born in Cameronbridge/Windygates from a coal mining father from Methil and a mother who had worked in the sugar beet industry in Cupar. Grand parents came from both fishing and coal mining families. You mentioned the coal mining under the Forth in Culross but later 1940’s-1980’s ( probably earlier) worked under the Forth from both sides. My father worked at the Seafield, aptly named. You may also think of East Wemyss where coal was actually harvested from the shore of the Forth.

Thank you, Mr. Young, for this important bit of Scottish history. Although I have visited the UK before, I will be visiting Scotland for the first time in July/August this year (2024). I have been reading a tome on Scotland's history (Alistair Moffat's), and it's been a challenge. As an American (with British ancestry), our history begins so much later, and so I've dipped into videos and other media to assist in assimilating the English/French/Protestant/Catholic conflicts in Scotland's earlier history. Yes, some of my ancestors were Scots -- my grandfather, born in Iowa, was named "Bonnie Earl," and I discovered my unusual surname is a town on Shetland (likely from the Vikings). The Scottish public education system in the 1700's is particularly impressive. I worked for a year at a Presbyterian mission hospital in rural Malawi, where the nearest town was "Blantyre," named after Livingstone's birth place. Every such mission had a hospital, a church, and a school. Best wishes!

Being a Pennsylvanian with predominantly Scots-Irish surnames and dna, I would imagine there’s a large amount of us over here that would love hearing about reasons for Scots to Ulster and Scots to colonies in 17-18th centuries. We don’t have much surviving records and rely on a North American perspective on figuring out when our families hit the continent. Thanks for your content.

Maybe they were Nisbet? There are always variants in the way surnames are spelled. William Nisbet (d 1783. From Dirleton, East Lothian) bought Marlefield House at Eckford in Roxburghshire. He also inherited the Barony of Grubbet from the Bennet family. This essentially made William Laird of Kirk Yetholm, where the Gypsies lived. Kirk Yetholm is about 1 mile west of the Border. I don’t have any more info but maybe what I've supplied can help.
