Small, kinda weird, possibly imaginary. Just like a jackalope!
I read a lot of fantasy and mystery, but I enjoy a pretty broad variety of genres, including classics, historical fiction, a bit of horror, thrillers, and sci-fi. I'm trying to tackle the massive goal of reading my entire physical tbr.

Yes! I hoped you would include more crafts next year 😄 I got significantly better with my book buying this year and now I contemplate blowing it off for the post-Christmas / birthday discount sales, because the last week of the year doesn't count, right? It will also make it easier to stay on track in January. The general issue with the book buying habits I have is that you have to buy in bulk to reach the free shipping. Then of course not everything can be read immediately.
Lightsaber penis is pretty common for censorship reasons. 😂
Great goals! I’m going to check out the Bingo Board from Hell because making one of my own sounds really fun. My reading goals for 2025 are to read 1 classic novel per month and to start/read/finish more sff series! I also want to cut back on my book buying so I will be reading what I already own & using the library more
Thanks! I cannot more highly recommend checking out Lianne's bingo board series, it's so creative. Your goals sound great, too! Fingers crossed we both have a great reading year 😁
I didn't enjoy Dracula so much but a Dowry of Blood is one of my favourite books and the writing is so beautiful. I also wish we could read more of Constanta before meeting Dracula but I still found myself caring about her a lot and rooting for her to be happy. I read Eclipse for spooky season and the real scary thing was Bella kissing Jacob. Maybe the true meaning of spooky season is the toxic friendships we made along the way.
I think Dracula is such a weird book, it definitely doesn't work for everyone. I agree that the writing is wonderful in Dowry; I think that was my favorite part of the experience. It was just enjoyable to read. Also, "Maybe the true meaning of spooky season is the toxic friendships we made along the way" made me cackle 😂
This was such a bad reading year for me :/ my two worst books were Bajar es lo peor by Mariana Enriquez, which sucks because she's one of my all time favourite writers, and House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson. I had such high expectations for that one and it just felt all over the place, like 2 separate books smashed together. You described the AFTG series perfectly, it's an absolute shitshow, but it's so much fun to read anyway
Ugh, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad reading year. Always especially disappointing when a book you're particularly interested in doesn't pan out. I'm not familiar with Bajar es lo peor, but I've been hearing a lot of mixed things about House of Hunger; I get the sense you're not the only person who was really disappointed in that one. Fingers crossed you have a better reading year in 2025!! 🤞
I’m still gonna read Priory of the Orange Tree (slowly because I can’t get the audiobook at my library) even tho you didn’t enjoy it. Hopefully I do 🤞🏽🤞🏽 Gothikana sounds especially awful 😬 but also I don’t think I’d enjoy a dark romance even if it was written well
Fingers crossed you enjoy Priory! I know a lot of people do love it, so hopefully you have a positive experience with it I think I probably could enjoy a dark romance if it was written well (I'm willing to put up with a lot) but Gothikana definitely was not it 😂
I'm hoping to finish the "A Case For Frey & McGray" series next year. I'm currently on book four of, I think there are seven?
Cool! I just looked it up and that series sounds super fun
@JackalopeHope it's been a weird trip, but I've definitely enjoyed it 😀
Love this so much! Just because one person dislikes the book doesn’t mean another person will.
Yeah, exactly! Every reader is different, and I really think every book has an audience
You brain is so smart and quick 😦😍 loved watching your reactions, almost perfect predictions
Aw, thank you! I always enjoy doing these predictions because it's just fun to see if I get anything right. I'm shocked I got as many right as I did.
This is impressive. Well done! I don't even know why I have so much fun watching these Goodreads awards videos, given that I don't live in an English speaking country so I never see these books around in the bookstores and know nothing about them. It is more about what is going to come in 1-2 years when they get translated.
Thanks! I enjoy watching everyone's Goodreads Choice videos, too. I think it's fun to see how everyone reacts to what's been nominated. It's interesting to think about when and what books will get translated, and that makes a lot of sense given that Goodreads Choice is very much a popularity contest and books get on that list based on how widely known they have become.
Well done on clearing some of the books off the list. You added less books than you eliminated and that is a win.
True! Any progress is good progress in this case. Thanks for your positivity 😁
Hi! Your video just popped up on my feed, I totally agree with your book choices and with the need for more complex stories that make you heal ❤ the least you can do is to use your time the way you feel like it 😊 Also, what I instantly thought was: gurl, you've put yourself out there posting on UA-cam a lot of videos week by week, you're more strong willed and courageous that the majority of us (me included!) we haven't even had the courage to try. I love this. Big hugs and trust your strength ❤
Welcome! And thank you so much, your kind words have really made my day! 🥰
*squishy hugs* to you, Hope. Stay safe, even though I'm not in America, I was deeply saddened to see the results of the election and keep wondering what it means for the rest of the world. It can be very scary. On a much brighter note: My husband went to see "Guards! Guards!" as a play once, many many years ago (before we met), and the couple in front of him left at the intermission after commenting that it was such a strange way to finish a play. (Potential spoiler: The "million to one" arrow shot).
Thanks! It's a rough time, and as difficult as it is here, I know this is also going to impact so much more than just this country. I'm hoping we can all make it through together. That makes me even more interested to finish Guards! Guards! 👀I've been reading it kind of in tandem with Henry V this week, which has been An Experience so far
Hugs!
Thanks 💖
Take care of yourself. We all need a bit of respite to prepare for the fight ahead.
Thanks, and same to you. 💖 We can't face whatever comes if we've exhausted ourselves grieving
I read The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury, The novelisation of Disney's Hocus Pocus and I've just started a new (to me) vampire book called "How to bite your neighbor & win a wager". The dramatisation of Dracula sounds like a good way to read the book (I've only ever read it physically & the abridged audiobook read by Christopher Lee, which was amazing as he did all the voices for the different characters), I'll need to give that one a try. Especially if it has Tim Curry in it.
I've never heard of The Halloween Tree, I'll have to check that out. And "How to bit your neighbor & win a wager" is a great title 😂 Highly recommend the audible original audiobook! I had a wonderful time reading Dracula that way
Pretty Girls is dark but I read that book in a day because I could not out it down!
👀well now I HAVE to pick it up again. I remember enjoying what I read of it previously
The quarterly book theme sounds like a good idea. Words are indeed hard, especially when tired.🥱 lol
Glad I'm not the only who finds words hard 😂I'm hoping a quarterly theme will give me more flexibility
Yay Blood Over Bright Haven! I've been reading Jasmine Throne so I want to get to the sequels this year. I also want to read Alien Clay by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Oh, nice, I've heard good things about the Jasmine Throne
Makes you wonder how some of these things got published in the first place.
I think that most books do have an audience out there, and these books being published means there has to have been some demand for these stories or stories like them, but they're 100% not for me!
@@JackalopeHope I guess I said that out of frustration as I'm a bitter and twister author with many publisher rejection letters to my name. I have self published on Amazon and the few reviews they've received there were all four and five stars. Shrug.
I used thesis and dissertation interchangeably for my PhD 😅
Oh, interesting! Was that because of your particular program, or just a part of how you talked about your research? If it's alright for me to ask 🙂
I love the idea of a vampire themed blog! Lately I’ve been getting more into comics and Marvel has a series of 5 comic issues (+spinoffs) called “Blood Hunt” that center vampires. Blade, Blade’s daughter Bloodline, and Dracula are characters in that series. Would recommend!
That sounds really cool! Thanks for the recommendation 😁
I think the conclusion to the Jasmine Throne trilogy comes out in November too
Oh, cool! I've heard great things about that series
I think the prison break one that you're thinking of is The Shawshank Redemption, it was a novella published in Different Seasons by Stephen King.
Ah, yeah, I think you're right. I had the right author, wrong book 😅
@@JackalopeHope it happens, Stephen King has written A LOT. lol
I tend to mostly lean towards the cosy side of things on days with miserable weather. My go-to series is "The No. 2 Feline Detective Agency" by Mandy Morton. 😆
Ooh, that sounds like a fun series! Cat detective books are always a good time 😂
@@JackalopeHope I'm currently on the eleventh book in the series. lol
@@TepidShambles nice! Sign of a good series
Great video, Hope. I'm glad that you enjoyed the second book. It does sound a lot more fun than the first one.
Thanks! :) I definitely think Sword Dance was more fun. It was so fast-paced and had great banter
Congratulations on the new job, Hope. I hope you're settling into the role well.
Thank you! I'm enjoying it so far, and the team I'm working with is great. So far so good!
Congrats on your new job! So happy for you.
Thanks! 🥰
Currently reading The Goblin Emperor, and my next books will be the new releases from James SA Corey and P Djeli Clark.
Ooh, I hope you enjoy TGE! The new releases from Corey and Clark both sound awesome, great next picks!
Wow . Thanks for the recommendations 😊 . Subscribed ❤
Thanks for watching! 😄
🤣 I was not expecting that for the last book 🤣
I'm glad you found it funny! I was laughing when I added it to the stack, so I'm delighted that it was funny to more than just me 😂
@@JackalopeHope I think it's because it just caught me by surprise, I nearly spat out my coffee 🤣
@@TepidShambles 🤣
I have Dark Archives in my TBR, I hope it's as good as it sounds.
Fingers crossed!
congratulations on your new job 🎉
Thanks! 😄
This is a good idea, I have so much weird and random stuff on my Kindle as well, it's over due a clear out.
There were so many books on mine that I'd completely forgotten existed 😂 The clear out definitely helped at least in bringing those back into my awareness
Cool TBR. Keep it up.
Thanks!
I'll be interested to hear what you think of Murder in the Family. I read it a few months ago. I hope you enjoy your reads!
I've been meaning to pick it up for ages, and I'm excited to give it a try. I've read several other mixed media mysteries lately that were good, so I'm really keeping my fingers crossed for this one
From Bacigalupi, you should try The Windup Girl, sci-fi, eco catastrophe, artificial people, and more
Oh, that sounds cool, thanks for the rec!
I hope you like A Strange and SE, low magic, very political fantasy. Please read the content warnings or skip the rest of chapter two when you feel the creeps It's a nice depiction of resilience and second chances in life
I've definitely heard the first few chapters have some really difficult content, so I will be careful when I start the book! I don't really know what to expect going in, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed I like it. It seems like a lot of people really enjoyed ASaSE
Just wanted to say I love the curtains 😀I recently watched you at my work laptop where I am not allowed to comment, so saying it at least now, a bit late 🤣
Thanks! I'm glad I finally got the curtain rod set up. I kept putting it off because I had to use a drill 😂
I just wanted to say that your handwriting is so pretty 🥰
Oh thank you! 😊
I feel what you mean with the slumpiness. I am on my 2nd book of the month (May). I liked what you did with the d6 & d20. It seems like a fun way to choose your TBR.
Fingers crossed we both have a better time in June! 🤞Glad you enjoyed the dice rolling! I find it to be really fun and it definitely helps with indecisiveness
Sending you positive thoughts on your job hunt!
Thanks, I really appreciate it! 😁
For me, ankle bug bites are usually from chiggers! They are little bugs that live in grass (usually taller grass, but they can sometimes be found in residential lawns). You can spray a little bug repellent on your ankles to deter them if you know you're going to be walking on grass.
Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely remember that about the bug spray. I don't think it's chiggers because I haven't been out in the grass at all (I'm like the least outdoorsy person I know 😅) and they're not red like chiggers typically are, but I think it's something related based on the type of bites. I have, luckily, located the source and started the process of dealing with them, so things are looking up!
I’m going to be reading Grace of Kings as the first book in a series prompt and I’m really pumped about it (also slightly intimidated because of the length).
Oh, good pick! I've heard great things about Grace of Kings, and I read the first few chapters a while back and thought it was really interesting. Fingers crossed you enjoy it! 🤞
Yeah. Love T. Kingfisher!
🥳Her books are so fun!
Nice list! I’ve read half these authors and really enjoyed them.
I think my auto-buy authors are Naomi Novik, Rebecca Roanhorse, P Djeli Clark, Ann Leckie, and SA Corey. I'm nervous about reading Stephen Graham Jones. I like supernatural and folk horror, but I've seen his books more compared to slashers.
Ooh, good list! I haven't read Ann Leckie or SA Corey yet, but I've heard good things, and I love the others you mentioned. I think a lot of Stephen Graham Jones' books are slashers, but I think if you wanted to give his work a shot you'd probably be fine starting with Mongrels (definitely not a slasher, more a coming-of-age story with some gore) or Mapping the Interior (I haven't read this one yet, but my understanding is it's a ghost story). He also has an Audible original, The Babysitter Lives that's much more supernatural
Now I want to read Untethered Sky. It sounds like a story I'd like 😊
I highly recommend it! I devoured it in a single afternoon
Adding red scholars wake to my tbr right now.
Wow three readathon! Ambitious! So glad you are participating in Galactic-thon! ❤❤❤
I'm nothing if not overly ambitious 😂Excited to be participating!
