    You'd think someone would have made this into a store asset by now. Also, it's good to remember that you don't have to make ladders realistic, unless your game is strictly striving for realism. Some games have characters jumping up several rungs at a time. Hell, you could have have them just zoom to the top via some mechanism. The function of the ladder (quick vertical movement with no horizontal) is more important than what it looks like. Work around problems and limitations be being creative with the execution.

    It just feels like you've fallen into the trap I've fallen into one too many times of overengineering something that shouldn't be a huge issue. Even if you were going for realism. Look into an IK solver or a procedural solution, they're not that complex to figure out and they're pretty modular so that once you've made one you can place them where ever, short or long ladders. You might even be able to reduce the number of animations you have and implement your normal climb and a fast climb. There's quite a few videos online about it, hope you all the best and please. Don't make mountains out of mole hills, you're making a game. Its supposed to be fun.

    Inverse Kinematics might solve your issues without tweaking animations for each ladder. You can pose end affectors (hand/feet) to closest ladder step and interpolate position between them during some frames of animation.

    • @anbagames
      @anbagames 27 днів тому

      Yeah, IK would certainly have helped and maybe I'll rely on it to eliminate any remaining clipping. Retrospect always makes you smarter, but I'm happy with the solution and have learned a lot :)

    There has to be some middle ground between pure animations and procedural animating. In procedural, each limb could look for the nearest acceptable point in its path and snaps to that. Blending a procedural limb animation with a premade torso ladder climb animation could cover the climbing itself, but like you mentioned the extra transition states add a lot of complexity. Very impressive result and explanation.

    I was thinking why have ladders at all? Why not have a trampoline, teleportation pad, or area that launches the player up? The goal is to get the player from point A to point B you can do it any way you want. Doesn't even need to make sense in the real world. You did make a really good smooth looking ladder climbing animation. Thank you for explaining your thought process. I could see a large studio contracting you to do their ladders. I would add a quick show of your game to remind people to wish list it at the start of the video. Most people do not watch until the end. In analytics you can see your video drop-off rate. Good luck!

    Hey, fellow game dev here! What you need is to look into game feel, particularly the polish aspect also known as "Juice". What your game lacks right now is camera effect and particles to make it feels better. Speedlines, sounds, effect on jump/landing/platform grabbing, FOV changes, etc. There is so much that you can do with the camera, the only limit is what you feel is right!

  • @noah8162

    general feedback would be that gamers tend to prefer responsiveness of inputs --> movement, it's a bad idea to make movement delayed/augmented for the sake of playing realistic animations. I'm not saying you are doing this, but it's a good thing to keep in mind. Cool animations can still exist, they just have to not interfere with responsive and satisfying character controlling.

    @InJJWeTrust0121 Місяць тому

    Definitely a nice prototype you have going on there, and the camera collision also with tagging objects to be able to omit that logic is great work. Two minor critiques that I would have are that 1) the speed of the animation loop is too fast for your movespeed, and 2) the way the foot kicks back and up (bending the knee) is unrealistic, as the human body doesn't do that unless in a full sprint. Dialing it back a bit might look more natural. Anyhow that's just my 2cents as someone who works alongside animators at a AAA studio. I realize that it's a prototype so maybe these are things you are planning to adjust later on down the line. Character, Combat(or Gameloop Actions), and Camera are you first priority for sure 🙂
