Blue Ember: why no one buys this microphone
The Blue Ember is probably the best microphone you could buy for under $50. There are four reasons most people don't buy this.
1. it's a small diaphragm microphone.
2. The microphone does not look good on camera especially with the pop filter.
3. It is a side address microphone
4. The microphone does not have a flat frequency response.
Some minor down sides I discovered with this microphone or as follows: The microphone suffers from plosives, has some off access coloration, handling noise is not very good, the upper mid frequencies sound honky on my voice and it has a boomy proximity effect.
Now that thoroughly trash this microphone let's talk about why it is the best for under $50. The build quality of this microphone is very good and will probably last you forever. The frequency response of this microphone has a nice deep low end with pretty neutral mids and a boost in the topping. For a condenser microphone it has pretty good background noise rejection.
Microphones specs:
Microphone type: 14mm cardioid electret condenser; 48-volt phantom-powered XLR
Frequency response: 38Hz - 20kHz (+/- 3dB), +/-1dB from 100Hz to 3kHz
Sensitivity: 12mV/PA
Output impedance: 40 ohms
Maximum SPL: 132 dB SPL (1% THD)
Signal to noise ratio: 73dB
Self-noise: 19dB (A-weighted)
Off-axis rejection: 12.8dB (90 degrees)
Weight: .84 lbs

Nice video
Hey, great video! I actually bought this mic yesterday for only 60 AUD (the normal retail price is 160 here). This is my first microphone and it was the same price as other super budget microphones (such as ones from fifine), and I personally like the look. I got worried when I saw this video, but luckily you recommend it as well! 😅
It's a great sounding mic that is easy to listen to for 60 AUD. I don't mind the way it looks also, but a lot of people do for some reason. Let me know if you have any questions about it. I am always happy to help.
I'm just searching for a good budget xlr interface and many people seem to recommend the "m-audio m-track solo", but I was wondering if you would know any good alternatives.
If you're looking for one of the more budget interfaces I would say that's a good option for $50 new. The focusrite Scarlett solo 3rd gen used is another great option. The focusrite Scarlet 3rd gen can utilizes 24-bit recording versus m-audio 16 bit. The Scarlett build quality is also very good. I've owned many Scarlett interfaces in my day and have never had an issue with one of them, they are built like tanks. If you buy one used they'll be about the same price as the m-audio interface. If you are also looking to record audio on to your phone the Fifine SC1 can be used directly with your phone. You can also use the Shure motiv camera app to record external audio from the SC1 to get some really good content on your phone with high quality audio. I don't know of any other interface that can do this. Hopefully those two alternative options help.
thanks for the great review, helped me decide to buy a 7ryms m1 (i think it is the same mic as this, different brand but sold by comica? not sure why)
They do look very similar. I looked at the specs on the 7rhms m1 official website. The only real difference I can see between the two is the Comica has a super cardioid polar pattern which is neither good nor bad....just different. I was not able to find out if the 7rhms m1 has a bit depth of 24 bit. It would be the only deal breaker for me if it was 16 bit and not 14 bit. Thanks for the comment. I have never heard of this microphone before and glad I know now.
@@unumludum didn't know about the polar pattern difference, thanks for the reply, i hope your channel gets more recognition.
Thank you! Let me know if you have any questions. Always happy to help.
my samsung a13 doesn't seem to want to use it with the usb-c connect. yes it's on digital. oh well. and yes checked audio gain.
Are you trying to use it with the camera or just a recording app? Some phone's native camera apps do not recognize external microphones. I would use the Shure motiv app. It is free, the camera quality is still very decent, and the most important thing is it captures audio at a way better bit depth / sample rate.
Thanks for the review video as always, bro~ 🤖
I got one on ebay open box for $179 before tax, cant wait for it to be here

What CHEAP converter box to get sound out of it????
Are you asking about the analog to digital converter box? I would suggest to use a focusrite Scarlett solo gen 3. It's a cheap and reliable audio interface that you can get used for under $100. It is really great because it can do a sample rate 192hz and a bit of depth of 24 bit, which is studio grade quality.
Yeah just got this off Amazon for 125 a couple days ago.
Yeah it's a crazy deal for a quality studio grade microphone
@@unumludum sounds way better than I expected too.
Is your gain dial backwards? Have the same device, but it appears that turning the gain knob toward the "+" ends up lowering the volume.
Yeah mine kind of does the same thing. I think it depends on where you're looking at the microphone. If you look at it from the back then it seems like the volume knob is backwards but if you're looking at from the front then it makes sense. I wish they would have just had numbers to indicate the volume.
Plan on getting one as seems better than a booster which so far is my secret weapon but I love that you can roll back the guitar volume and clean up the sound etc more secret sauce lol thanks Fer post!
Yeah, I like it better than a boost. They just came out with a new model this year so if you haven't got the pedal yet I would check out the new model. Let me know if you have questions in dialing in the tone you want. Thanks for the comment!
@@unumludum I plan on getting the new one as far as setting I think everything is gonna be maxed and I'll control it with the guitar vol knob etc ,it will also work well with my exotic sl drive ie plexi ,as you can get super bass boost with the dip switches ,so great lead tone with great mids and bottom end. My supersweet booster though does get alot of the late 60s early 70s blues rock bands tone etc ,just with overdrive from tube amp and booster thst gets me there but I'm excited for the naga viper, and thanks Fer the heads up regarding new model. Apparently the extra button is pretty useful.
I picked up this mic on amazon for a huge discount and this mic has been my go to. it's perfect for my vocal tone.
Yeah it is my go to mic for singing.

Compliments of the standard of your review, Unum. You've done the work for those of us in search of a good little microphone. On the basis of your research I've ordered one. Thank you.
Thank you! I am glad I could help. Let me know if you have any questions on the microphone itself and I will be happy to help.
Great review. I really appreciate it. I already have one that I want to start using for voice over work and it is definitely a hot mic that seems to pick up every little noise. Can you tell me if it is best to have the High Pass Filter on or off for voice over work and which position of the switch is on or off. Great musical skills too. Love the guitar playing. Thank you :)
Very hot mic. You definitely need some treatment in your recording space because of that output and the full capsule this microphone has. To answer your first question... it depends. If you like your voice to sound lower and more bloomy when you talk closer to the mic then keep the high pass filter off. This effect of making your voice more lower and deep sounding when you get close to the mic is called a proximity effect. If you want your voice to sound more natural sounding when you get up close to mic keep the high pass filter on. To answer your second question the high pass filter is off when the switch is to the right and switch to the left turns it on. Let me know if you have any other questions.
That is fantastic my favorite❤

Would i use focusrite solo or dbx 268s for livestreaming setup so i can add future devices like hughes & kettner tubemeister 18
You would need a focusrite 2i2 with a DBX 286s. The reason is because you need one input for your mic you're speaking into and a second input for the mic that is used for your guitar amp. The DBX 286s works very well for voice but if you want to use it on a guitar amp you need to run it after the mic you are recording the amp with. Do not run it in a pedal chain. The reason is because those are unbalanced lines and the DBX 286s uses balance inputs and outputs. If you try to plug it into your amp directly it may break the 286s. Hope that helps.

Sounds really thin in this video?
You are probably right. The reason is because in my other videos when I use the sE Electronics DCM8 I do some post processing by adding some gain to get the volume up to around zero dB. I didn't do it with this video because I wanted to show what the microphone sounded like right out of the box. If I would have played with the gain on my preamp a little more I am sure I could have got it to sound like my other videos. I hope that helped.
Fix for real-time monitoring on the AM6: 1. Plug the headphones to the 3.5mm jack 2. Click "playback" tab from the Sound Panel, Select "fifine Chat" or "fifine Game" as the default output device, you can monitor your voice mixed with the PC audio. You could also go to Page 13 of the Instruction.
actually, for the diy person, these are great bodies.
Def sounds good,I am liking mine so far.
Being a dynamic mic, it is not made to pick up sound at any distance. It is the kind of mic singers use so that it doesn't pick up the noises on stage made by the band, and that's why they get right up on the mic. So when you use it you are expected to get right up on the mic, as opposed to a condenser mic. What it came with is a mounting bracket, not a shock mount. A shock mount has some type of soft insulation, sometimes flexible, in order to deaden the transfer of sound vibrations from the mic stand or arm to the microphone. I hope that clarifies some things for you.
That is correct! Dynamic microphones are definitely designed way different than condensers. They're two different types of technology to record audio. Dynamic microphones use a magnetic field to generate electrical signal and condensers use a capacitor with two metal plate covers. Dynamic microphones usually are better to be talked into up close between 4 to 6 inches, but there are some people that do use them up to 6 feet in order to catch ambience as well as organic reverb in the room/recording space. I don't know why they wouldn't just use a condenser because they're a little more sensitive and better suited for that, but to each their own. Lastly, thanks for correcting me. That is correct it is a mounting bracket not a shock mount. I actually made that mistake because my sE Electronics DCM8 has a mounting bracket as well, but it also has an internal shock mount, so I always would just call it a shock mount. I did however explore more in-depth to see if the Tank 3 has an internal shock mount and I was not able to find any information on the internet which leaves me to believe it doesn't so it would just be a bracket. Thanks for the feedback!
Feels like the video is delayed half a second or so.
So I watched the video a few times and couldn't really notice any latency where the audio wasn't syncing with my video. Is there a particular part in the video where you see it not syncing. I was recorded in real time with OBS with no postprocessing, so unless the encoding was corrupted I don't know why it would be out of sync. The only other thing I can think of is if you are watching the video on Bluetooth headphones there is latency that happens sometimes which doesn't sync correctly with videos. Either way let me know your thoughts on the matter. Thanks!
@@unumludum hey, thanks for the reply. It feels delayed already during the first minute when I watch and hear you speak. I skipped to some other parts of the video and it feels a bit off too. I tried Safari and Firefox on macOS Sonoma (MacBook speakers), also on iPhone with the same feeling. Never mind, it's not a big deal. Anyway, keep up the good work. 🙂
I appreciate you looking into that. It actually drove me a little crazy watching the video over and over. I do think the first part might be a few milliseconds delayed, but then my other edits in the video seem to be in sync. I don't know what happens, but thanks for pointing that out.
Decent review, my friend!
W edge
so the only difference between the k688 and the k688t is the mount?
Yep, the mount is literally the only difference between the k688 and the k688t.
What pop filter and shock mount are you using?
The SE electronics dcm-8 / dynacaster has a built-in three layer pop filter and a built-in shock mount. It also comes with a foam pop filter to go over it if you really need it. I do have an extender for it because of the way the XLR Port is on the microphone. I got the extender on Amazon for about $8. I hope that answers your questions.
@@unumludum I should have been more specific. I was talking about the pop filter and shock mount on the v7.
Oh not a problem. For the SE electrons V7 I used a sm58 shock mount, but it will work for any handheld microphone. The pop filter I used was one made for the Shure SM7b, but it is a really good small metal pop filter that works great with a small microphone. It is awesome for videos because it does not cover your whole face when you are on camera. Links to both are below. Thanks for your honest review of the FIFINE K688, nice video, my friend
Anytime! I had a great time reviewing the microphone.
As a producer.. That mic sounds really bad..it would be a rough mix
does your microphone have a bottom cap that unscrews? i've tried two of these microphones and one unscrewed at the bottom while the other did not, both sl models
Yes, mine does have a cap that screws off. I can't speak to the older model baby blue bottle or the bluebird, but I do know that all the baby blue bottle SL's have an unscrewed cap. The reason for this is because it is supposed to be a professional studio microphone and it makes it easier for repairs as well as to be able to alter the microphone like switching out the capsule. Hope that helps.
yeah that helped, thanks for the info i appreciate it! @@unumludum

The point of these mics is that for 1/1,000th the price, you can get a decent mic. Most people listening to a UA-cam video are not audio engineers who would care about or even notice the mic quality.
You have a good point about most people not really caring about the audio quality being a studio level recording. There are however quite a few select individuals that see the name U87 and think they're going to get a $3,000 quality microphone for $30. My hope is that they'll watch this video and get a better idea of what they're exactly purchasing.
@@unumludum @unumludum And that's completely reasonable. People need to know not to expect miracles. :-D People also need to know that a $3,000 mic or a $30,000 mic will sound like garbage if used the wrong way. And no one mic will suite everyone's voice. The SM7B isn't a good fit for me because my voice is 90% muddy. A mic that "warms" my voice is terrible.
Looks good sound awful
Good video. I’m glad it was suggested to me.
I'd have thought it were phone box at first
Yeah it was much worse sounding after I watched my video after uploading it. They probably should have called it the Temu phone mic
I'd guess it's got the same guts as typical NW700/BM800 type mics, with a little electret mic capsule rather than a true condenser capsule with high voltage power supply. Those come with that same rubbish connecting cable.
You're probably right on that. I did some research and a lot of people are saying that is a medium-sized condenser capsule but looks weird because it has a lot of black plastic around it.
compre el mismo. pero creo que hay otros con menos ruido de fondo, quisiera saber cual es.
Ouch that mic is horrendeous in every way.
Worst condenser microphone ever. But looks like original legendary U87.
Thank you. Just ordered one for 300 bucks and cant wait untill it comes!!!!!
Is it digital pre amp tube power amp? I'm considering this amp for $300 because all my amps now might be considered classic rock amps I think, and this one I picture more modern. I don't currently have a speaker cab. I have a hotrod deluxe 3, orange rocker 32, blackstar ht5r, original yamaha thr10, line 6 bogner dt50 212 line 6 hd500x. Or do you think it would be just duplicating the yamaha or line 6? I don't have $300 to throw around like it is nothing
It is hybrid tube+solid state equalisation preamp on both chanel. Same as Marshall jcm-1.
that is so cool that you know that! I couldn't find that info anywhere. Just got it and I'm really happy with it. I'm a little surprised how loud 1 watt is... but if I need it quieter there's always the xlr out and I can listen thru monitors or headphones. This H&K does the EVH sound better than anything else I have, by far. I'm using the Line 6 212 speakers (vintage 30 and Celestion G12H90) for the moment. I'll need to close mic each to hear if one is sounding better than other. I have an extra Vintage 30 still in the box and was considering building an oversized birch cab for it. Anybody know where to find a good guide for dimensions/instructions on guitar cabinet making? @@Perearst3
Yes, it's a hybrid but sounds pretty good in my opinion. I have a Marshall JCM 2000 100 watt head that I used to play live with. If you put a tube screamer in front of the Hughes & Kettner you can get the same modern mid sound the Marshall JCM 2000 is known for. This is also somewhat the downside of the Hughes & Kettner. If you're not using an overdrive pedal I feel the distortion on the high-gain setting does sound a little heavy in the low frequencies and really cuts a lot of mids. I feel it would be a little hard to stick out in a mix if you are not using an overdrive pedal, but other than that it is my favorite amp.
