Jon's Workshop
United Kingdom
Приєднався 18 лип 2014
A channel to document the building, setup and running of a home metal cutting workshop in the UK. Hopefully the content will inspire others to have a go and consider Engineering as a hobby or better still as a career. If I can inspire just one young person to consider Engineering as a career then I will be extremely happy.
My name is Jon, I live in Scotland with my wife Dawn and I am a time served toolmaker who has spent 30 years in Engineering (predominantly Aerospace) and I currently work in Engineering Management but still enjoy getting my hands dirty.
I have a dog called West (Border Collie) who will undoubtedly feature in some video's as he is always under my feet. I also have a second channel where I explore my other hobby, piano music, which you can find here: ua-cam.com/channels/Z28GnXDAsParFaCA-BVwvw.html
Please enjoy.
Jon.

Thank you for video . I have the same symptoms , and will check that solenoid valve tomorrow.
What’s the prat’s called please 🙏 mine had had the levelling system failure 😞 and yes mines are on the bump stops
Hi, this video is great, I am in process of doing the same on my g31. The desiccant in mine was a bit brown with moisture and corrosion on the solenoid. Not put it all back together yet but wondering if the moisture is a sign of another problem?
Hi, I am no expert or mechanic, but my gut feel is yes. Either the compressor is running overtime due to a leak somewhere meaning it is drawing more moisture in, or, you live in a very humid environment and the air drying part of the compressor isn't working properly, these are just guesses though.
Hi, thanks for the response. I live in Swansea, it’s always raining here, plus the sea air could be the answer. 👍
In regards to the short cable, maybe their thinking is if its being used in a workshop then its always going to be in the same place so maybe install a dedicated power point? If used used mobile then its always going to be used with an extension lead
This is a classic 'apprentice piece' from the great days of British Engineering long past!
Hey Jon how are you? I have a 2011 750Li F02 same problem, do you think that solenoid fits my car?
Sorry, I have no idea, I have only done that one job on the 5 series to get me out of trouble
No worries, I got the answer already and yes my compressor is the same and that part fits my bmw 7 series F02 ! Thanks anyways🙏🏽
Hi Jon, just bought one of these 21/11/2024 compressors and they’ve sorted the wheels now on this compressor, also the cable length is slightly longer now as well, so to be fair to Hyundai they are listening. Also which I find handy, the drain valve at the bottom of the tank, now has a small tap attached, which as I say, makes it a bit easier than unscrewing the knurled screw. WELL DONE HYUNDAI!!
i can remove the black metal piece …. genius
Thanks!
Thanks very much, much appreciated 👍
Great video. Thank you. I just had this happen on my F02. Had a mechanic try and sort it. An auto electrician look at it. Neither had a clue. Told me to go to BMW. Obviously didn’t do that because I found your video. Just a shame they now locate this under the car so access isn’t easy without a ramp but straightforward once you gain access to it.
I've made up a version that fits my Colchester lathe compound slide so I can bore the precise internal angles for various types of microwave/mmWave feedhorns without having to do loads of trig. That version has paired holes on the back face and magnets and holes on the front face to hold a 10 mm parallel for me to indicate against. The datum is at one end rather than in the middle, but otherwise it's the same idea.
Interested in purchasing can you tell me how much?
I’m a beginner starting to learn metalworking at a Makerspace with a well equipped metalshop. These videos are brilliant. It’s teaching techniques and approaches based on huge professional experience. Thank you!
Do you have a part number for the glow plug
There are almost no videos on how to use a DRO. This is immensely useful. Be great to have more on this topic.
Great idea not sure if my payment went through if not drop me email
very helpful video my BMW 520 2017 M3 sport has yesterday developed this issue, and they have diagnosed it to be the compressor and they have come back with a total cost of around £1,100 including labour and VAT but its still a big kick in the stomach for a Friday afternoon 😮 and it least i will get a good warranty with a genuine bmw part
It seems strange to me that so many comments, below, say that this is a great idea and have downloaded the plans and yet couldn't put out for a measely couple of dollars for all the work Jon did for us. These plans are easily worth $10- or $15-. Come on everyone. A couple of dollars is nothing and, if you use the $ Thanks button, it takes about 30 seconds.
Thanks!
Thanks very much indeed, much appreciated 👍
Hello Jon, rewatching this for the 5th time. Still planning my version. Have noticed you haven't posted much this year. I hope you are well and the workshop is still keeping you occupied. All the best. -term
Hi term, thanks for checking in and keep watching lol. Been through the mill with a few of life's challenges this year so workshop and UA-cam have had to take a back seat unfortunately. Hopefully will be back soon. Cheers
Very helpful. Thanks Jon.
Thanks very much, I have just bought, one of these. I too, am a complete novice & like you, wanted to get some extra heat capabilities for the workshop, as & when necessary. I will mainly be using mine, for lead welding, which it does very well indeed - had a go, this afternoon. i need to look in to soldering & the flux situation, in more detail. Thanks.
I really liked the video , altough I do it in a different way , your explanation is spot on . Could you do a video someday on the smooth R function in various planes ? I can use it , but it's more luck then skill . Some theory might be very usefull . Thx from Belgium
Hello Thanks for sharing your videos and your experience with us: Since I think you are the first person who made a video about this device on UA-cam ,Ibaught one from my frend also new and including a lot of accessories for 120€😁and ihave one question: How itested and I worked with it I think this device is not able to grave the same size the peac that iwant copy. Itryed also Maximum but also was smaller .or maybe idid something wrong 😑 please let me know if it’s possible. I follow your channel from Austria 🇦🇹. Best regards Sina
There's no need to do the math for the end angle . In your example : Use 15° for start and 360+15° for end angles . Then set the nr of holes to 8+1 . The dro will then do the math for you .
Agreed, this is a shortcut way to do it for simple hole patterns. I was demonstrating the correct and conventional way to do it. When dealing with complex multi angle and non even spaced holes, adding 1 to the pattern number invariably ends up in errors being made as it becomes hard to track. If you do the maths correctly as I demonstrated, you can work straight off the drawing which reduces the possibility of errors.
would it be any good to sharpen a hedgecutter perhaps you could do another video on that or would a diffebnt tool be better
At a push if you had nothing else but it would not be quick.
@@jonsworkshop ok so what would you use
@@aldavis2692 for a hedge cutter, probably a couple of old files I am not too bothered about (round and flat), these will be quicker, easier to control for the angle, and will put no heat into the blades eliminating the risk of losing the temper in the steel. Alternatively, an electric die grinder would be more suitable but watch the heat input
@@jonsworkshop ok thank you
I really like the style of Ram/Hydraulic Pump that they use. I also Like that it has the Pressure gauge. I have the Harbor Freight 20 ton here in America and wish that they would adopt this style over the bottle jack. That being said I did upgrade my bottle jack to the Air over hydraulic option witch does help to reduce how many pumps I have to make so I guess there are trade offs. Anyways I'm sure you are going to love it just as I do mine!
Very useful video, thank you! Saved me a ton of time and money figuring this out for myself.
Where a r em you .. y o u are missed and having disappeared so suddenly leaves the imagination to wander and wonder. Hope you are well and oust sick of it . Fred.
Hi Fred, thanks for your thoughts. I am still this side of the grass (just) 😉. Been navigating some of life's challenges so UA-cam and Workshop shenanigans have had to take a back seat for a while. Hoping to get back over the winter all being well. Cheers, Jon
Thanks for the brilliant Angleser idea!
Thanks very much indeed, much appreciated 👍
Excellent presentation Jon. Very well explained and got it - thanks.
Lovely video Jon
Took 7 minutes to cut bolt.
Not quite, probably 2 or 3 minutes, you are forgetting I was filming as well meaning trips back to the camera to stop/start recording, and I also played around with the speed setting. I did also say I was probably pushing the tool beyond its limit, and followed up with its not the right tool for the job but could get you out of trouble at a push😊
Best explanation on how to use Abs/Inc by far. Thank you!!
can it grind chainsaw chains? And if so, where can someone get the appropriate files that fit the particular machine?
Thanks!
Thanks very much indeed, much appreciated 👍
Great how to, thanks it sorted me right out. 👍
a very informative video. Just remember when making them that we are not all clever and need an in depth explanation. If a way to use a dro needs explaining then i urge you to make a video of it. Thanks a lot keep up the good work.
At 4:00, some of the cheap Chinese DROs show "ALE" for absolute... they took the letters and made their own made-up abbreviation, ( A bso L ut E ), = "ALE". Thanks for making this video.
For making the brightness come back just free the cog on the top left of display
Soz not free* press the cog icon
Thank you so much. Just discovered your channel, You have a new subscriber Sir! As the owner of a 3D printer, I continue to be amazed at the properties of items printed in humble PLA. I have gears in my electronic lead screw set up on my old lathe, that are 3D printed, and show no signs of wear. I will 3D print a copy of your jig, just as an experiment.
Thanks 👍
G'day Jon. I watched this with interest as I to want to do this upgrade but I also want to extend it towards the rear so as to fit a scale for the DRO so as to be reading directly off the quill plus keeping the depth stop for thos repeatable hole depths.
Tuned to a minor scale.
👏🇦🇺🐈⬛😎
very good video explaining all that system with very much details, in my case is that when i park my F11 the right side gets low only.. so what i understood with ur video is one of the valves that are ready to change correct?
Hi, it could be one of the other valves that I didn't change, but it could also be the air bag on the RHS is leaking in your case.
@@jonsworkshop thanks, which other valve are you referring? but the car only gets low on the right side sometimes it’s not always.. ahah
Really nice review, thank you so much for your work!
Pretty cool. Great idea nicely executed. 👍
Thank you for making this video, its really helpful. If the beads are showing signs of being moist does it really matter or could i leave them as they are ?
If the beads are damp, I would advise drying them while you have the thing apart. Microwave in a glass dish until they go back to light colour. Damp beads are a symptom of another problem, either your compressor is running far too much which could be an air leak, or you live in a very damp or humid environment.
@@jonsworkshop thank you
@@jonsworkshop Hello. Just been scanning through these comments after watching the video and completing this fix about 2/3 weeks ago. Very helpful video thank you. I checked the beads but only briefly and I'm thinking they could be causing a further problem. The solenoid fix worked perfectly but since then the car drops over 3/4 days then when the compressor kicks in it blows the fuse. Think this points to an overworked compressor? I thought the slow dropping might be down to me not putting it all back together properly.
Very useful i have the same milling machine and i am sure in the future i will have to do the same thanks jon
Thanks Rick
Very helpful thanks
