Jon's Workshop
United Kingdom
Приєднався 18 лип 2014
A channel to document the building, setup and running of a home metal cutting workshop in the UK. Hopefully the content will inspire others to have a go and consider Engineering as a hobby or better still as a career. If I can inspire just one young person to consider Engineering as a career then I will be extremely happy.
My name is Jon, I live in Scotland with my wife Dawn and I am a time served toolmaker who has spent 30 years in Engineering (predominantly Aerospace) and I currently work in Engineering Management but still enjoy getting my hands dirty.
I have a dog called West (Border Collie) who will undoubtedly feature in some video's as he is always under my feet. I also have a second channel where I explore my other hobby, piano music, which you can find here: ua-cam.com/channels/Z28GnXDAsParFaCA-BVwvw.html
Please enjoy.

A lovely radio, well done sir.
Hi Jon. I've just finished this fix on my f11. Would not have had the confidence to do so without this great video. Thanks for taking the time and effort to make it.
Thank you. You are so kind.
Brilliant, efficient, simple, much appreciated.
Thank you for sharing.
Very clever mister. That looks like something I would need in the future. Great. Thanks for sharing the plans.
Thanks
Thanks Jon 👍for the ANGLESET drawings

My shop Super used to say, "That looks good! Did you deburr it?" Good job, mate!
Oh, and one more thing. The shifter with all the cobbled facing and burrs? Looks like that may have slipped on the arm and was riding against a gear. Mine has two ways of keeping it still on the end of the shifter arm. So looks like the clone had some shortcuts done to it.
It's now 4yrs. later since you presented this video of experience. And I've just begun this same journey on my Bolton ZX45, of which yours is a clone. Having been a Bench Mechanic of many years, I noted a number of tricks I could have suggested had I crossed your path back then. But I just bought my mill last Summer. But currently, I wouldn't have gotten into a rebuild just yet, had I not done something stupid by leaving an quill wrench on the splined top shaft. And turning on the motor!!!!!! Boom! I bent the shaft next to the quill/spindle! $*^%(&^*))*)))!!!!!!! You would think with decades of shop experience, that I was more seasoned than that? So am now in a forced rebuild, which is probably a good thing for this one-owner machine. The guy wasn't rough on it. But I doubt he ever did much maintenance either. So your tutorial on the disassembly has been quite informative. And though our machines have different labels, they are the same machine, which same bearings. Although mine aren't cheap China bearings. I think it was assembled on the troubling Island now in the news. I was curious how you were going to remove the roller bearing race. Basically, we used a similar approach in the shop when I was a much younger pup. We would grind a groove in the hardened race, then use a small chisel and hammer; smacking the starter groove. It then breaks easily, and out she comes Bearings with "plastic" seals are usually Neoprene. They keep dust out. The bearings with metal shields will allow oil to flow freely into them. So you were correct in cleaning the barrel of the quill system. Amazing how lax their installers were when building your machine! Thanks again for the info!
Thanks, I hope your rebuild goes ok, and you find this information useful 👍
@@jonsworkshop Jon, I'm at the stage where I need to extract the #5 "Short Shaft" which drives the splined shaft. Can't seem to make it budge. I've pried with crowbars, but the bearings won't give. Suggestions?
@@paddiman772 some gentle heat up to about 100C (220F ISH) in the casting around where the bearing is located quickly and with a blow torch, try and keep the flame off the bearing itself and just heat the casing. Then try again quickly with your pry bars. Hopefully the shaft and bearing will come out together meaning you can then use a puller to get the bearing off the shaft. (This all assumes you are going to fit new bearings. Aim of this is to quickly expand the casting bore but not the bearing which should give you clearance and melt any loctite that may have been used. You might need a couple of attempts increasing the heat each time but letting it all cool right back down in-between. Hope this helps
@@jonsworkshop Jon, I found the dust cover! Didn't recognize it as such. Tap-pried with an allen wrench I made years ago for this purpose, and voila! The cap came up. Now I see the darn Circlip. All is well now! No heater, no brain-er! And I've sent the shaft to a machinist friend to duplicate it. I simply don't have the time right now. And I certainly can't wait for the Chineeeee to get back with me. I've got a biz to keep making other stuff on other machines. Mercy me! And thx for listening! BTW, my friend knows about your postings. And he rates them with high marks!
Hello Jon, I would like to know what the appropriate preload is (in kilos of force or Newton), for this type of spindles for HBM 45. Thank you.
Hi, apologies, I could not find any specs for this so I did it purely by feel and measurement as shown in the video. I have used it a lot since then, and some heavy cuts (for the size of spindle) and there has been no excessive heat in the bearings, or no play developing. Hope this helps.
Hi Jon. Are you still doing youtube?
Hi James, had to take a break to deal with some of life's challenges. Hopefully will be back at some point soon.
@@jonsworkshop good to know Jon. I hope all works out. Best wishes
I have similar kit. I did not find any useful information about the gas consumption online. Propane is cheap, but oxy cost here around 20€. I bought kit anyway, it was 100€ incl. shipping. Yesterday, I silver brazed rusted Suzuki Inazuma 750 gasoline tank. It was like 500mm of continuous beed,10mm wide in bottom corner. I was brazing with 0.8mm nozzle, pretty small but hot flame. I was done after 30-40 minutes of brazing. I saved a lot of money with this gastank repair, and I still have gas in bottles. So for small home repairs, brazing copper pipes, heating seized nut on bolt, brazing small broken parts it is great choice. Dont know how much oxy left in the bottle, but my gastank job is done flawlesly, so Im pretty happy.
My problem is that it is intermittent and can take many hours to empty the air. Sometimes it can hold for days. Question 1. Can I access the wires going the valve somewhere and disconnect them on a day that it seems to be completely shut? Question 2. How can I can empty the air manually before removing the hoses? Hope anyone can answer :)
Thanks!

@@jonsworkshop I sent you a email to get a copy of the plans. Your welcome
@mikeouendag7323 thanks Mike, I am away from home just now so don't have access to the drawing files. If you go to the description on the video, there is a link where you can download them from. Let me know if that doesn't work for you and I will email as soon as I return in a few weeks. Cheers, Jon
Hi John can i asked where you managed to get the part please
Hi, there's a link in the description, can't guarantee it still works now unfortunately as this video was a good while ago
In high-school drafting the terminology was a little different. Baseline dimensioning And point to point dimensioning And each has their time and place.
I am extremely worried about your absence....
Don't worry Jay, and thanks. Taking some time off to deal with a couple of life's challenges. Should be back on the telly soon hopefully 👍
This is the one thing I have struggled with in manual machining thanks u so very much
@paul-y2n1d 1 second ago does this automatically start up when pressure drops ?
Yes it does👍
@@jonsworkshop thank you my friend
Mine just died The controller board cooked it self on low effort tasks
Unfortunate, hopefully you are within your 3 year warranty, and can just get a replacement.
can it work a cavity wax injection gun?
Sorry, no idea, just Google the spec of your gun and the spec of the compressor
But how do the standards know if they are square
Bravo! You have confirmed some thoughts I have had for some time. Thanks!
just had the same issue with my F07, this is a great fix and i hope mine is suffering with the same issue...
You have done a beautiful job on the reconditioning of you shaper. I love the orange and dark gray paint job. It really made the machine pop out it your shop. Only one negative comment. You have a lot of paper items very close to where the hot chips may land on the paper products.
Orange mostly with Dark Gray highlights and trim.
Classic build! Was a final project in 1st year machinist class, but instead of milling out the body, used a bandsaw to rough cut out the waste. Saved a lot of time milling. Used an ACME thread. Case hardened body and jaw before final grind to shape.
Hi John. Hope you survived the new years scottish weather! I've had a stab at drawing the pen. Would you like a copy of the plan? Pete
Hope things are well, hope you had a good xmas and a happy new year when it comes. Hopefully see some new videos soon.
Hi, thanks for your message. Been dealing with some of life's challenges over the last while, apologies for lack of content. Best wishes for 2025, hopefully I will be back on the telly soon👍
Thanks!
Thanks very much indeed, much appreciated 👍
I am not interested in following someone who cant be bothered to clean their machine.
Thanks for the comment, your choice.
Merry Christmas John mate. Cracking project. Really impressed. Don't suppose you would share the plans so I can have a go?
Hi, apologies, I have thrown away the scribbles I did. Also, the most important dimensions are the internals, and these would need to be derived depending on what refill and mechanism hardware you purchase etc.
@jonsworkshop no worries. Thanks very much for taking the time to reply though. I'll have a go and see how I get on. Merry Christmas mate. 👍
Good video. I made a couple of notes for my own home shop.
Thanks for sharing ! Would love to see this same applied to the lathe your instruction with the cardboard part turned on a light for me Thanks !!
Just wondering what tools are needed for the job? Including removing compressor from the car. Thanks!
A basic socket set and the torx bits I mentioned in the video (sorry I can't remember the sizes), plus a Phillips screwdriver should do it. Cheers, Jon
Great review, thanks! Tomorrow I'm getting one of these machines because there's one for sale at the local Lidl supermarket for just about the same money that you paid for yours. Hopefully it'll still be there tomorrow morning. Looking forward to start working with it.👍
I have the Likaci brand heater. Last night, I had an E8 error, which in their manual, is the glow plug failure. When I pulled the original plug, it was cleaner than yours(only been running for 3 weeks)......I just replaced the plug and screen and it powered up, no problems. One thing I found is that if the clicking is too loud, try moving the hose around at the bottom near the air intake. Mine was very loud after putting back together.....I could only take a few minutes of the sound. I then stuck my finger underneath(being careful to NOT get BURNED) found the fuel hose and pushed it back.......the sound went from very loud to almost non-existent. The noise is not always the internal clicking of the pump, but rather the fuel line slapping metal inside the case. The fuel line moves quite a bit while the pump pushes fuel through it.
One very important point that you didn't emphasize is that the ABS and INC datum are totally independent of each other. This means that although you use ABS coordinates to set an INC datum, if you subsequently adjust the ABS datum the INC datum will not change (like it does for an SDM datum). For example, if your part shifts and reset the ABS datum, the old INC datum is no longer valid and also needs to be reset (if you are using an SDM datum, the SDM datum is automatically adjusted to match the new ABS datum).
I’ve got the exact same rotary table but mine had the dividing plates already on it, it’s a bit strange as the dividing plates have a cover over them and it’s only got one plate but it’s double sided.
Any horror stories for this comp ,Anyone used it for a Hookah set up i.e 30 feet under boats with air filter
My x5 f15 only drops on the right side and not the left side, so why would that might be?
Check leakage air suspension on the right side first. Next replace the valve on the compressor.
Very nice work. I need to make one myself.
Jon, a year later, and I've thought of a question... Would it matter if the ball bearing had a flat ground into it?
Thanks!
Thanks very much indeed, much appreciated 👍
