Sugar Loaf - The Lost Resorts, Episode 32
Sugar Loaf is perhaps one of the most recognizable lost ski resorts in America. Operating from the late 1940's, Sugar Loaf was once a full on ski resort featuring golf courses, a hotel, indoor tennis, swimming pools and the ski slopes. Despite it's prominence in Michigan, Sugar Loaf abruptly closed in 2000, and has been lost to time ever since. In this video, we’ll take a deep dive into the complete and complex history of the Sugar Loaf ski resort.

WE'RE NUMBER THREE! WE'RE NUMBER THREE! Great video as always Skier 72, and thank you for sh(r)edding light on my local Medicine Lodge Ski Hill, and all the other grassroots ski areas on this list! I really hope this encourages some more people to come check out everything Medicine Lodge has to offer. A few points of clarification: - Although the Town of Bentley owns the land on which the Ski Hill sits (which is located in Lacombe County), Medicine Lodge Ski Club owns all the Ski Hill assets, and operates the Ski Hill. We are 100% volunteer-powered since 1962! - The Master Plan you refer to was commissioned by the Town of Bentley, to consider the Ski Hill property as an asset and identify options for future improvements/alternative uses. It is not prescriptive, but it has given the Club some useful information to consider in our long-term strategic planning. - We are presently raising funds to upgrade our Samson T-Bar (installed in the late 70's), and also to conduct a hydrological study to help further assess the potential for snowmaking at Medicine Lodge. In the meantime, hopefully we get lots of natural snow this year, and we can enjoy another snowy and successful season! Thanks again for putting us on this list! Hope to see you and all of your followers at Medicine Lodge soon! Tips up, Greg Chernoff, President, MLSC
Thanks so much for making this video. I had a dream last night about Fortress. I lived there for two seasons 1997 and 98. Some of the best days of riding of my life to this day. I feel so lucky as I hitchhiked from Whistler hoping for a job. I was 18. I got a job (with ski breaks) and a place to live as soon as I arrived. A big part of me will always be there.
Marshall Mt is where I learned to ride in the 90s. I loved that mountain. I have scars from the school bus they buried in the terrain park. Family season passes in the final year came with your name on one of the triple chairs. I wonder where our name is now. Great video!
At the 9-minute mark you show an aerial shot from a map program. Is that map view open to the public?

BOYNE: Bend Over, You're Now Employed.
I always loved C.O.P. A ski resort IN the city! So amazing. Plus mountains only an hour away. Calgary is really damn cool in that way.
I literally drove by this place last week. There is a few trees naturally growing at the top. I have a long history with that place, and Table Mountain (I was the first person to snowboard at Table Mountain, hiking up it before they even allowed snowboards in 1988). I went to allot of ski racing competitions in Blackstrap in the mid 80’s as a kid and later when I switched to snowboarding, allot of snowboard competitions in the early/mid 90’s. I remember living in Regina and driving there on a weekday, I think it was in 96 or 97, finding it closed 😅 So I just hiked up and and dragged out picnic tables and ollied over them, hit little jumps etc. It was pretty fun having the place to myself anyway. I hadn’t rode there since about that time, but I had heard it shut down. I live overseas and had to visit Saskatoon, so I drove past it on the highway literally 5 days ago. Pretty fucking sad honestly. And any Canadians out there know damn well who would have burned down the chalet. Our friendly neighbourhood “natives”.
Awful Awful you could not see the bottom on the slope from the top. It was that steep. You fell, you slid to the bottom. In pain. This run was not, but the resort was probably my favorite in Michigan. Skied there a lot throughout the 70's and early 80's. Great times! Do not remember dynamic pricing. I do remember lift prices going up to $3.50 at one point from $1.75. Cheap cheap compared to the cost today to ski.
This was one of the iconic ski resorts in Michigan back in the 70s. The Boyne resorts couldn't put them out of business like they did to Walloon Hills and Thunder Mtn. but it seems a shame that this happened over only $3,000,000. In today's world, thats the value of many single family homes. Shows how much the value of our Dollar has dropped.
Thank you for the video. What is up with the intro music and the muffled music during the video?
Sugar Loaf was a great ski hill, for sure. Not particularly easy to get to, though.
Sugart says,"take a lesson."
Honestly I feel if sugarloaf would taken a business model like Boyne or tree tops they might have survived. Possibly promoting mountain biking during the summer with golfing to have diversity in activities throughout the year.
Awful Awful..... loved that hill! Unfortunately, when Kay sold the golf courses, that was the true demise of Sugarloaf. You can't run a ski hill in northern Michigan without 2nd income. Golfing.
I’m impressed that the top terminal can stand on one leg, given the size. Italians seem to know what they’re doing 😂
Probably needs all the space for that massive drive it must have. Timber Bowl is a beast of a lift
During the 70s this ski area in Michigan was over-shadowed by Sugarloaf Maine in advertising and promotion in the ski magazines. I never knew this Sugarloaf in Michigan existed until this video. What a waste of a great family skiing experience and for those new to skiing as a generation will now miss out on the life-changing opportunity for what this sport offered.
1/2 of Winter Park CO is in a National Park I believe.
National forest, not a national park. Big difference
@@Skier72 Oh the Feds have a speed limit on chair lifts they go rather slow on National Forrest Property. I was a Skibum for 3 Winters. 1980 and 1982 lived in Dillion had a Seasons Pass at Copper Mountain. Then in 1983 I lived and worked at Alta UT. The two winters I lived in Dillion. I made a Trips to Winter Park , Steam Boat, Loveland and Vail ect. In later years made Trips to Lake Tahoe, Toas NM, Whistler and three trips to Europe.. then I guess lift tickets got too high for me and I bought a snowmobile .
audio on this is awfully low vis-a-vis everything else I watch on YT (including other eps of this series). good story though! thanks.
Major problem in places like that is over expansion by increasing debt & making it more expensive for those visiting the resort,if you keep it simple & reasonably priced you can weather mild snow years
Greetings from a Tiny Island in Maine, USA Make sure to check out the still thriving Sugarloaf mountain in Maine.
Used to go by this ski area in the late 70's while heading to "Ski Idlewild" right across from Winter Park which has been abandoned for many years now as well. You should look into that one.
Thanks for the video. I learned to ski at Sugar Loaf and can still name every run from memory. Just bought a Sugar Loaf hat and T shirt at Bahle’s in Suttons Bay a couple days ago. Great memories!
Tre-verse City??? Obviously not a Michigander.

Fair enough 😊
Growing up in Fife Lake, remember going to a lot of resorts enjoying the great times. 🤘
Use to ski it in the 70s and 80s. Loved awful awful
was a fun place , I remember going there on weekends and the line for the lift was so long it took and. 45 minutes to get wait in line to get to the top each time.
Another example of corporate greed. They make the money but dont pay the bills and run it into the ground filing bankruptcy so nobody is held accountable. i never ski but as a Michigander snowmobiler i was familiar with Sugar loaf as its reputation was quite well known in the 80s and 90s
Yup, Remo Polselli in particular seems really sleazy. A simple Google search on his name tells all. And something seemed off about Katofsky, the secrecy and bizzare decisions he made. At the end of the day, it's the local community that suffers.
I am from Traverse City, it was a haul out there but a great place to ski.
Wow what a find, I worked there for 2 winter seasons in the late 80's
❤❤❤❤❤s
Spent many days of my childhood there. Winter and Summer. Great, great memories.
Just golfed there last weekend
Ski Toured up there when I moved here. Finished my 4 million feet of climbing project under 4 seasons. Bike/ski.
Hey @skier72 and @beneminger3666 I worked at Iron Mountain as a ski instructor (From New Zealand - John McKenzie) for 2 winters; 91/92 and 92/93, so can say it was open and NOT closed as you suggest. We weren't aware of the challenges and struggles, and I enjoyed 2 winters teaching at the resort. I had options to teach at other larger, better known resorts - in fact I did teach at Kirkwood in 93 as well... but the resort paid for my accom and airfares in 92/93 so it was a good option. I employed a number of other ski instructors and lift operators for the 92/93 season, all from NZ, who enjoyed living in Buckhorn and working on the mountain. It was a small resort, but had some good intermediate teaching terrain with ok numbers visiting the mountain from Sacramento and surrounding areas. It's really sad to see these images and hear the story about the struggles. Yes, it suffered from being so close to Kirkwood and South Lake Tahoe, but I felt it had a family, schools and budget market. Bottom line, some good memories and times there - first winter we all stayed in the lodge! We also made the most of skiing at other resorts in the region and visiting South Lake often. One story.. New years 92/93.... with a storm on the radar... we chose to go into South Lake, against advice with the storm due... result, a fair number of the mountain team - lit ops, ski school.. were left trapped in South Lake unable to get to the mountain the next morning... due to the snow and closed passes.. a couple of us went the VERY long way round... back through Pioneer, highway 50... north of Lake tahoe... and got there.. the mountain opened with a very small team! Good times
With lost resorts, don't forget about Ski Rio in New Mexico. It had 2 Poma triples and a used Riblet double. The 1959 Riblet double from Stowe still stands as of 2024. The 2 triples now run at Mohawk Mountain and Berkshire East www.google.com/maps/@36.8539791,-105.4506162,13313m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MDkyMi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D
Awful Awful was the most famous ski hill name on Michigan, maybe even the whole USA. You could stand at the top and you ski tips would hang off the edge. Many of my childhood ski memories were here a Sugar Loaf. Back when ski jumps were destroyed by the resort and now they make them bigger than ever for us to jump. Too bad my knees just can’t take it anymore LOL
2:38 - I now know where 80s iconic adult film star Christy Canyon got her name.
Outstanding ⛷️ ⛷️

'Waffle' always made me smile, set between the Wall and Awful Awful, the name made sense And since it was covered in moguls, it looked like a waffle as well.
Loved (hated) this! We have lost so many of the smaller (cheaper) ski hills in Michigan, (Thunder Mt., Walloon Hills, Skyline, ect.) through consolidation from the big resorts or just the economics of less snowy winters and higher insurance rates. The trouble is, beginner skiers no longer have the local, cheaper ski hills to hone their skills, so they are pushed to the bigger and more expensive resorts. When you fall 2-5 times per run, who wants to pay $100+ per day for that privilege?!😮 And the ski industry is wondering why the participation rate has been dropping. Oh well, at least it’s fun to explore the old abandon places via motorcycle! 😊
