To Plexi, or not to Plexi: that is the question

If you have 5 Marshalls, the thing to do is compare them all. Especially if you have two 70s JMPs and don't know when that will happen again! There was no processing of any kind on the guitars other than the cab impulses. No EQ or compression on the guitars. The mix bus had compression and limiting, but no EQ. I have the SV20H too and mine is not bright at all (but can be if needed) and better sounding than the old plexis I have. I am not much of a Marshall guy but it is very useful sound at times. One really worth trying is the JVM410HJS (that one I use much more than the plexi stuff), also the YJM (I don't have one of those). The plexi hole seem to be very popular to fall down in, especially when people get older 🙂 Then some vintage guitars to that one.

      @@MagnusOlssonGuitar I guessed he might have! Are you not jumping the channels then? Or just running the volume high and using guitar to control drive? I do jump the channels most of the time and then play around with the volume for each channel until it is “okay” with chosen guitar and speaker (no DI). And obviously the volume of the guitar. Very rarely any pedals in front of it. I like it but don’t use it much. Most overdrive sounds here is that amp (pushed hard) ua-cam.com/video/-1jjHfwah3o/v-deo.htmlsi=qKjK4EHSF7DmH1Wa The normal 410 is one of the most horrible Marshall’s I ever tried. The JS is a completely different amp that just looks the same. From being around great amp builders much the last couple of years would I say that a tube change don’t make that much of a difference. For amount of gain can it maybe change it 4-5%, so my look at it is “don’t like the sound, get rid of it. Not worth spending time unless you gone rebuild the amp (especially the gain stack and the tone stack). It is very cool to see how you grown (music wise) Daniel. Would love to meet and just nerd away.

      In this test on average I think I’d agree. It’s midrange, or upper midrange is more gnarly and I personally feel it cuts the most. I got a JVM recently but didn’t think I needed to pop it in the video. Its Plexi thing is ‘better’ than the DSL but I wouldn’t say it’s the special part of that amp, but perfectly serviceable!

      @@kaisound868 yeah if they did do it maybe they could do the clean and crunch channels only with sorta a rectoverb control layout 2 independent channels with two selectable modes. Yeah no way they could cram everything into that small a head and suppose I might be the minority in someone who would be interested in that. I also agree that the guys chasing the Plexi thing are not going to be satisfied with anything else more than likely. My current amp is a DSL20cr and it is more than enough amp for me and I love the dsl’s gain sound. I put a V30 in it and that was not the right speaker for it in my opinion, then I bought a used Cream Back and it suits it better in the combo of course I got the v30 in a old peavey vertical 2x12 and probably will try to find something else to pair with it. You’re never going to hear the subtle, and not so subtle differences, in a recording, that’s been played to a backing track, and sounds like it’s been double tracked. The only way to do a comparison like this is record a quick chord/riff on each amp, dry, no backing or doubling. Even then you’re gonna hear way more differences in the actual room. Playing a DSL then a vintage 1987 back to back in the room, through the same cab, the differences in sound and feel would be obvious.

    • @kaisound868
      @kaisound868 10 місяців тому

      Appreciate the comment, but I obviously disagree 😅 this is the only way to do a test like this. Same take of the performance sent through each amp. Playing them separately with a new performance generates too much error in the person when their performance reacts to the amp, changing the output from the pickup and therefore the amp. Additionally, the differences in the room don’t matter other than to the individual who has them in the room with them. Every single time you hear a song, you hear an amp, cab, mic, mic pre, eq, compression, limiting and more. If you can’t hear the differences in a mix, then they don’t matter.

      @@kaisound868yeah but your video is titled , To Plexi, Or Not Too Plexi(not How To Make Every Marshall Sound Exactly The Same In A Recorded Mix)and most of your viewers are going to be playing the thing solo, in their music room, or jam room, or on stage, where the differences in sound and feel between amps is much more obvious. The guys who only judge an amp for how it sounds in a recorded mix are going to be in the minority. It’s hard enough to judge if a piece of gear is right for you from YT clips but it’s nearly impossible when the amp is in a mix and made to sound like an idealised, massive recorded amp tone. Also, there’s way more gain here than ACDC or Lizzy ever used and once you dial in so much gain you can hear the chord sustain endlessly as it fades out, you’ve gone past the point you’re gonna hear any differences in a mix. And who cares if there’s slight differences in how you, as a player, react to the amp !? Isn’t the idea of having a great amp so that it will respond to your playing dynamics ?? It’s one of the reasons the Plexi is so iconic and as players it’s how we seperate great amps from average amps.

    • @kaisound868
      @kaisound868 10 місяців тому

      @@zachariahwade8482 it seems you want a non objective test. If you’re happy to change the input, then you’re going to change the output and you’re no longer comparing just amps. If you watch someone do back to back playing of amps or gear and they change anything then it’s not an accurate test anymore and you’re better off muting the audio when they play and just listening to their thoughts on things. Fair point that lots of people play amps in rooms. That’s what guitar shops are for and you can go demo gear there yourself. UA-cam given its lack of ability to teleport viewers to the time and place of videos being filmed cannot give you ‘in the room experience’ which it seems like is what you want.

    • @zachariahwade8482

      @@kaisound868 you’re completely missing the point. If the guitar, speaker , mic placement etc is all exactly the same and the only thing changing is the players reaction to each amp, then that is as valid a comparison as any. The idea that if a guitarist played 5 amps, and the only variable is, due to the different feel of each amp, he didn’t strike the strings in exactly the same manner for each amp, and it’s therefore not a fair comparison, is bonkers.

I got another 070R w/ a hipshot, vol only, and Juggernauts (with covers btw) and it slays. From my personal experience the Rags are not very hot pickups and I find the Juggs to be hotter. For the Rags removing the covers will help and removing the tone pot if your guitar has one. Personally I prefer the Rags in 6 string guitars cause the low end is massive. I prefer the Juggs for 7 strings (especially for low tunings) because they are tighter, more focused, and work w/ the extended frequencies better.

I would be willing to bet that when Misha designed these pickups they were intended to be used without a tone pot. Hope that helps solve your issue!

    I hope you don't mind me asking, but why specifically do you prefer the Ragnaroks? I only ask because I'm torn between the two, and this was one of the top 3 comparison videos of the PUPs that I've found over my 1-2 week search on this specific comparison. I currently have Aftermath PUPs in my Solar V1.6 and I LOVE THEM, but for my E-II Arrow 7-string I want something with tighter low-end frequency response, great articulation in the mid-range, and less high-end frequency response (which is what I get from the Aftermaths). So I'm torn between the Ragnarok and Juggernaut! The top 3 videos I have left me either leaning toward one or the other, or just as ambivalent before I narrowed my selection to these two PUPs.

      Based on what you've said, i think the Juggs will be closer to what you describe. I've never had the aftermaths but always thought they sounded a little harsh. Neither of Mishas sets suffer from that. Now bear in mind, its been years since I did this, and there was a 3 week period between each playing, so the audio here is better than my memory. I felt the rags were a little looser in the low end, and a bit more uncontrolled in general and that worked for me.

      @@chazriley7075 I said F it and bought the Rags and the Jugs (they arrive today). I'm going to try the Rags first, and then the Jugs. Whichever I like the most, I'll keep in the Arrow, and put the other in my Ibanez RGIX27. The Aftermath pups are HOT for a passive pup, but they sound OUTSTANDING in my Solar Canibalismo man. I'm tempted to get a set of 7-string Aftermath pups as well to try out in one of my 7-strings as well. However, I tune my 6-strings to C-standard usually, and my 7-strings just a half-step down. I feel like if I was in standard tuning the Aftermath's wouldn't sound as good because they are no kidding the hottest passive pup I've ever played in my life. My intuition tells me the Aftermaths might sound a bit over saturated on the high-end. However, if I'm conflicted on which I like better in my Arrow after I try the Rags and Jugs in it; I may just buy a set of Aftermath pups for the 7-strings and do a comparison. I'll be soldering pups every weekend for the next few weeks regardless. Let me know what you decide and how give me an honest review once you've tested them. I'm curious to compare your thoughts in contrast to my own relative to my RGIX27.

    I don't get why they changed the headstock shape to the ugly reverse one they have now, and also changed from passive to active pickups. The actives they use now aren't even made for fanfrets and they also sound terrible. I really wish I had picked one of these up before they were discontinued! They might not be perfect, but they can be one hell of a mod-platform!

    Its a good guitar playthrough video, technique is fluid but firm and precise and notes are well spaced, but I get lost when its time to know which pickup is which cause frames switch randomly and too fast sometimes to grasp the essence of the sound. Plus, with the band playing as a whole (its good to have it for a reference point) but I would have liked to maybe hear both pickups guitar only playing the same riff/lick. Good tune though !

    • @kaisound868

      Hey Cédrik, it seems like for the most part you enjoyed the video or found it useful I hope? I get that the frames change somewhat quickly, but the pickups are what tell you what it is that you are hearing. White bobbins is the Ragnarok and black is the Juggernaut. Additionally, I knew people would want more flexibility than I could offer in a video so added the files for people to play with themselves in the description. Hopefully that helps!

      A lot of it will depend on your DI box/interface. When I had a focusrite scarlet gen 1/2 I always had dead distorted sounding DIs. I got an audient id22 afterward and the built in DI was miles better and cleaner, the two notes reload di was better again, and now a radial pro 48 which is like £100 is better again. Basically you need headroom, and the Radial does this best. Then it’s about making sure your absolute peaks are less than -10db, to be safe maybe even -16db. You can always turn them up later, but you can’t get rid of clipping.
