I’m not sure I understand. The rope seal doesn’t contact the oil pan, it goes around the crank. The oil pan gasket should be as flat as possible to the bottom of the block. Maybe I’m misunderstanding your question

@ Yes when you put the oil pan gasket on the bottom of the engine block, a portion of the gasket seems to extend over the bottom of the upper rope seal. This has the effect of the oil pan gasket getting between the upper and lower portions of the rope seal when the filler block is bolted in.

Have you reinstalled the the bearing block? And now you’re installing the oil pan?

Yes I am in the process of installing the front and rear lower filler blocks and the oil pan. The oil pan gasket fits on the bottom of the engine block. It rests between the upper and lower rear filler blocks, and between the engine block and lower front filler block.

Ok that’s sounds fine. I don’t understand how your rear main seal would be contacting the oil pan gasket. The one I did didn’t give me that problem. It’s been a while since I did one on a 226 so maybe I just don’t remember. If you want you can send me some pictures at redclaytraveler@yahoo.com

Haha we don’t have to worry about that much snow around these parts. We just get ice after the snow melts every time.

@redclaytraveler1949 normally I like to get out in it a little but having to do plowing a short time back it was nice to stay inside and hug the furnace. I should have organized some of my parts pile but I chose the lazy road. Deep snow and I didn't care. Couldn't believe they stopped mail service here. I said wtf ?

Haha hey when we get ice and snow most everything shuts down. We don’t have the plow trucks or salt trucks available to maintain anything other than main highways.

@redclaytraveler1949 major bonus. The damn salt has given me plenty of grief in rust damage. They have mentioned using beet juice but a salty truck threw a little in my grill the other day. Not what I wanted

I need to wash my truck and the 5 to make sure I get any salt off of them. Beet juice sounds fun, I know they use cinders in Colorado.

Looks like single digits with a wind chill factor below zero is for next week. lol

@@redclaytraveler1949 That forecast gets a good honorable mention even by Minnesota standards! Below zero highs for us ahead with -35 wind chills. You know it's cold in GA when Frankie MacDonald gives you a shout out.

Haha I can deal with it as long as I can keep my well pump warm and my house. lol I’m going to have to do a lot of work before next winter to get everything up to standard. lol

Well sadly my house had its chimney removed from by the previous owners. They removed it just below the roof line. So I plan on eventually putting it back but in the meanwhile I want to track down a good stove insert and run the pipe through the chimney up to the roof and out.

Haha My brother gave me that vice for Christmas. I haven’t had a chance to mount it on the bench yet, but I’m planning on doing it soon.

They are nice for sure. The problem is I don’t work on bikes enough to have one around right now. However they do make pretty good adjustable work benches when you’re not working on motorcycles. lol

It definitely feels like that sometimes. I keep trying to remember that the Willys isn’t putting any pressure on me. lol It’s all self inflicted. Happy New Year buddy!

I don’t know, I have heard of guys doing that and being successful and others say it has to be fixed the proper way. I tend to fall in the middle because most of the old Willy’s flatheads have a crack or two and people run them for years not knowing. I would say maybe give it a try and see if it works. Finding a good machine shop to address the cracks properly isn’t as easy as it once was, at least around me. I know low buck garage has a video of him doing something similar on a Willys L head and it worked for him. lol

I would definitely try to or find another 226. They are good engines and last a long time when maintenance is kept up. The problem is trying to find one that has been maintained over its life. lol
