Machining A New Rock Tumbler - Part One
In this exciting video we are going to break out the milling machine and make a new rock tumbler. I will be using the 8020 aluminum extrusion like I did with my last one. This is my longest video and takes you though the processes and setups I used to build the frame and the endplates that hold the bearings. This is an upgrade from the one I am currently using. It will use a 3420 size DC motor that is much quieter (so you can hear me in videos). The bearings are also 1/2" bearing instead of the weaker 8mm.

Tumbling the Georgia State Gemstone - Part one, rockhounding and tumbling
Переглядів 1014 години тому
Hello UA-cam in todays video we are going to be doing something a little bit different. I will be taking you along to rockhound the Georgia state gemstone, Quartz in my back yard. Time to see what this will look like tumbled. Most of the video is rockhounding, by that I mean surface collecting. I could get out the shovel and get quartz that way too but it is all over the surface. 00:00 into 00:...
Tumbling Granite - Part One the course step

As an inexperience rockhound on my first trip to Patty Pit Quarry in Summerville, GA I picked up about every rock. Patty Pit is a working rock quarry and pretty much provides rock for fill. Sometimes the rocks don't come from their quarry. Such is the case with this. I found it off to the side and thought it would be interesting to tumble so in my bucket it went. Now we get to see what it will ...
Patty Pit Quarry - Lace Agates - Part 2, the polishing stages tumbles
Переглядів 11916 годин тому
In this video I have condensed the 220, 500 and 8000 AO stages into one video. Most of the grits I use come from the Rock Shed except the 500 which came from Amazon. I have no paid sponsorships with either. The video chronicles about 3 weeks of tumbling or 7 days per stage. The gallery at the end shows the polished pieces dry. Hope you enjoy and feel free to ask any questions or make constructi...

I would love a rock tumbler, but there's no naturally occurring rocks where I live.
Many rock shops ship, just saying. 😊
Should be interesting to see how they come out.
Nice intro. Can't hear you over the machines. Maybe record a voiceover and dub it in avter filming the video? I'm going to use captioning to know what you're saying though.
@@joshuakarr-BibleMan the motor on that tumbler i built is loud. Currently building another with a quiet motor.
Yes. an interesting tumble! Possibly Basalt?
Some nice, polished stones there. The faster tumbling speed is good for stage 1 to shape rough rocks, but you will probably be better to have a slower speed for subsequent stages (34 rpm?). It is impressive that you designed and built your own tumbler. A tip on setting up your barrel for tumbling, put water in before grit, that way, if you overfill with water by accident, it's easy to just pour a little out. Sound level of the intro and outro is a little better on this post!
@@michaelc6817 thanks. A new tumbler is in the works as the gear motor is too loud. Plus it will have adjustable speed. I did adjust the sound levels of intro/end. Thanks, i appreciate the comments.
Hell yes!!!
@@JoshKnowlesrules still have him too. Make sure to smash that subscribe button. LOL!
The Rock Shed is a great place to get your grit from. They also have a good selection of tumbling rough. I also get my ceramic media from them.
You got a great shine on that rose quartz. It was smart to use that stage 4 "polish" as a pre-polish and use Rock Shed 8000 grit polish as the true polish. Nicely done, I think for your first batch on that tumbler you built!
Here's a tip for you. The washer that is used on the barrels works really well at popping the lid. Just slip it between the lid and the rubber and give it a slight turn.
I noticed you didn't reuse the ceramics from stage 2 here. If you thoroughly wash the ceramics, they can move with the rocks through all stages of the tumble. Grit will not embed in the ceramics like it would with plastic pellets.
The ceramic media is good as a filler, but more importantly with quartz, it softens the collisions of the quartz stones, which can bruise somewhat easily. As much as 30% ceramic media is a good mix for tumbling quartz in the second and later stages.
Interesting that you went with a direct drive DC motor on this tumbler. Highland Park Lapidary has recently released what I believe to be the first commercially available direct drive, variable speed, DC motor driven tumblers. Getting rid of the AC motor and belts seems like a great idea. By the way, the 65 RPM seems a bit fast. You may want to tune that thing to 35 to 40 RPM or maybe compare to the Thumbler you have.
@@michaelc6817 i am actually going to rebuild this tumbler. The motor is a bit on the noisy side. It has been running almost 3 months 24x7. The next one won’t be direct drive but will be a dc motor with an adjustable speed.
Looks pretty good! I got a cheap small shed off Amazon. Designed apparently and made in China. The number of tiny screws needed is simply ridiculous, actually ludicrous. Not even marks where the screws go, never mind being pre-tapped! Instructions (all pictures) have to be carefully reviewed and understood prior to each step. Very small shed (not a walk-in) and the manufacturer is recommending two people over a full day to put it together. Never again!! LOL!
@@michaelc6817 i actually got this one from Harbor Freight about 20 years ago. Pretty easy to setup and use. Plus there are many mods you can do to it.
Pretty well-done video. The intro and outro music are too loud though. You don't want to be busting the eardrums of your viewers :).
@@michaelc6817 will try to adjust those on the next ones. Thank you for your kind words.
Put her in low gear for that size drill bit.
😮❤❤❤❤❤❤💯💯💯
Plenty of room to run.
merci à vous

Moteur électrique à cadre en C de 80 tr/min
(Also there's no B in Thumler.)
Might have been worth replacing the bearings while you're at it.
Mine is also made in Taiwan. It’s a 1995 grizzly, the only thing it lacks as far as I’m concerned is a way to reverse the feed. I think I saw one of those machines that had a reversing lever and I wish I could build one for mine. Somehow or another I’d have to add a gear into the gear train for the feed and that will reverse it.
@@Tom-jx9te there is a way to reverse the feed. From what i have seen is it is not a hard modification either. I know there are several videos out there covering this.

Lucky if it last a few years
Good way to rot the floor
Aren't you supposed to set it back a few feet from the property line ?
@@amptunes technically it is 3’ from the property line. The previous owners put in those trees right on the property line and put the fence back. They did it on the other side. We fixed the other side and have it right on the line. These trees block the neighbors mess of a back yard.

Personally I wouldn’t have it sitting on the ground.
@@scotty7132 it is actually on blocks. I have a sloped hill. The left side is about 1/2” off the ground while the rh side us 7-8”.
Dude. Looks good, but take my advise and add a system of 2x8 joists over this. This will also sag over time.
@@simonrobacker6415 trust me i would have used 2x8s. However this is for my son who is in a wheel chair and inches matter. This is going to hold up a rubbermail shed. I don’t plan on having it more than a year.

Until recently I had one sold by Busy Bee Tools here in Canada that was just labelled “Busy Bee” before they adopted the Craftex label. Made in 1989 in Taiwan.
Great idea!
I wouldn’t say all are made in China. The Compact 8 was made in Austria for most of its run. I believe some of the latest versions were made in China though.
