Cloudberry Flowers - Flower Farm and Garden
United Kingdom
Приєднався 9 січ 2021
Hi, my name is Catherine and I am a flower grower based in the Scotland in the UK. I have been growing cut flowers on my flower farm in Scotland since 2015. We are in zone 8b and usually have our last frost at the end of May and our first frost mid October, although it can be as early as September or more unusually early November.
We are located in a small Scottish town, with 1 acre of land. Unusually for the size of garden we are just a few minutes walk from the high street. I started growing 8 years ago and provide flowers to local customers and florists. It's been an exciting self taught adventure with many a success and disaster! Flower growing and gardening will always be an opportunity for learning and through my videos I hope I can share with you some of my successes, failures and my love of flowers each week. I would love it if you wanted to follow along with my flower farming journey, Catherine x

It's amazing what a few days like that...

Ohh would love to know how you found 2024 I agree with some definitely seemed to be my hardest year gardening the slugs were just crazy I basically gave up with Brassicas and lost a lot of veg as my allotment flooded twice!
❤❤❤
Great to see u back Catherine! 😍So happy you’re planning on making more videos 🥰 💐x What compost do you use please? X
❤❤❤
❤❤❤
Beautiful. I also grow large dahlias and find they are somewhat large for flower arrangements. I imagine florists find that too,
I have been in the NHS 40 years the garden has kept me sane over the years. I’ve watched your videos which have helped me improve and now in the position in the next year to actually stop work and develop a flower business. I hope. Thanks
Brilliant video. Thank you 😊
Thanks so much, I am really glad you enjoyed it.
Just discovered your channel and love it!!!
Thanks so much for watching 🙂 I hope you enjoy the videos. I am looking forward to a few more daylight hours soon and getting this years flower seeds started!
It's lovely to see you back on You Tube you've been missed but it's good to hear you are still growing flowers. Good luck for the coming season with better weather and fewer slugs and snails.
Hello, it’s lovely to hear from you and that you enjoyed watching my catch up video. I am enjoying growing my flowers still and looking forward to this years new season in the garden x
Can't wait to see all these flowers in the garden again 🌸🌷🌺💐🌹🌼🌻
Thank you, not long now until those extra daylight hours and then seed sowing can get started! 🌱 🌺
Recap videos are always so helpful. Thanks
Thanks so much for watching. Keeping a diary and looking back at the photos from the garden last year always really helps me work out what I am going to do this year.
So great to see you back!! You were missed🎉
Thanks so much, it’s good to be back and I’m looking forward to growing some more flowers this year.
❤❤❤
Thank you so much for watching.
Lovely to see you again Katherine. Always love your videos and the beautiful floristry work you do. Happy growing but remember to try and make time for yourself too, it's very hectic working in healthcare, Here's hoping your flower growing, gardening and floristry moments bring some tranquillity to your days. Here's to a successful 2025 season. x
Thank you for watching, it’s lovely to hear from you. I am def so much better at making time for myself now than years before. The weeds sometimes just have to wait! Some days you just have to have some down time after work and then it’s a nice dog walk, meeting a friend for a cuppa, swim or movie night with the girls. So the UA-cam videos will still be here but a bit more sporadic depending on how crazy life is at the time! Spending time in the garden in the summer evenings though I do really love after a day in hospital x
It is amazing how many of us flower farmers are nurses or paramedics. Perhaps its an antidote to the challenges of the job. This is my first winter as a full-time farmer. Im feeling the pinch financially but spring is coming. Love from Ireland as always ❤
Hello, lovely to hear from you! Good luck with the new growing season. The winters are def hard with less pennies coming in as a full time grower but spring is not far away so I hope you get some cracking blooms then. Are you growing many tulips? I am so glad I have my flowers and garden to come home to in the spring and summer months. It’s lovely after a day inside and the challenges of the job to potter in the flower patches. I hope you have a great season and didn’t have too much damage from the storm last week xx
I am so happy to see a video from you! Thank you.
Thank you 🙂 it was lovely to get another video out to you and have time to look ahead to what to grow this year. Another wild night outside tonight so not quite there with the end of winter but lovely to have a little more light in the evenings so I think this is the weekend to start some sweet peas off.
@@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm We are having a very mild week here in GA USA. Our daffodils and tulips are growing by the day.
Thank you Catherine. I am so glad you had the time to make this video. It was so helpful. I am trying to plan this years growing season. Please take care of yourself. You have a lot going on.
Thanks so much for watching this one 🙂 It’s been nice to get a video to you all and start thinking about what to grow this year! Will definitely be careful not to take on too much and have some nice breaks planned at different times so looking forward to those! X
Hi great video. Your astrantia do you start that by seed? If so any tips on how to do it?
Thank you. I have done a bit of both over the years, some bought plants and some grown from seed. The seed sowing has worked but it does take time. I have sown in the autumn in seed trays and nothing happened. But if you leave the seed trays over the winter the changes in temp help and I would get germination in the spring. That was the most difficult bit getting them to germinate. After that the seedlings came on well.
Delighted you're back!!
Thank so much, it’s good to be looking forward to another season of flowers.
Creeping buttercup is my biggest nightmare. I found it was easier to get up when the soil was dry.
That’s good to know thank you. It really does spread quickly and get everywhere.
Love to see you back! Love all the educational detail you have about growing flowers!
Thanks so much and for watching today. I am looking forward to getting my seeds started off again for this years flowers.
G'day Catherine - hope you have a great season 🎉 We're starting to wind down in Australia. Nice to hear from you again!
Thank you, it’s great to hear from you and I hope your season has been a good one this year x
So so good to see you 😍Hope that Ètowin (sp?) storm didn’t cause much damage for you
Hello 🙂 it’s lovely to be back and sharing the flowers and probably the weeds again with you! The storm I was worried about. A lot of trees came down locally but very luckily for us none did come down in the garden. The flower patch fencing needed a bit of fixing, the stall roof got broken but the greenhouse survived. So very lucky. Thanks so much for watching today 🙂
Hi Catherine lovely to see you back…. can I ask where you buy your pro cut sunflowers from? …. thank you
Hello, lovely to be back and thinking about flowers again. I have got some from moles seeds, some from plants of distinction before. Thanks for watching 🙂
Thanks for the inspiration! Could you share what shrubs/ greenery you grow/ will be growing also I always struggle with the non-flowery bits. I grow for my home and to gift to friends and family but would like to have a bit more green in places haha
Hello, thanks so much for watching. There are so many lovely foliage and I wish I had more! You can never have too much! I love eucalyptus and it’s easy to grow from seed. What I struggle with is getting in through the winter. I love using skimmia, spiraea, physocarpus, snowberry. I really love pittosporum to use in arrangements but unfortunately lost this in the very cold winter we had a few years back. The other foliage above has got through all our winters and thrives here in Scotland.
@@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm I did get some physocarpus last year it is lovey but such a dark red I felt I could only use it with certain colours. Pittosporum died on me too think the winters have been exceptionally wet these last years my mums eucalyptus all went grey/ yellow I think from wet feet even though they were in containers. Will look into the others you mentioned thank you!!
Yay. Right on time. I was hopeful you’d be back!
So good to be back and planning flowers to grow again. A lot of work to do outside and looking forward to the lighter nights starting and being able to get back outside in the garden then. Thanks so much for watching today 🙂.
Hi Catherine, welcome back, lovely to see you. Looking forward to seeing more videos 🥰
Thank you 🙂 it’s lovely to be able to get a video out again and to think ahead to next year, the garden and growing some lovely flowers.
How lovely to see you again Catherine. I missed you.
Hello, thank you, it’s lovely to back. Just spotting the first snowdrops out today and hearing the birds singing in the garden. Not long until everything is growing away again x
Love this!
Thank you so much for watching 🙂
where to find these blue statice seeds? I am in Canada
Hello thanks so much for watching. I have got blue statice seeds here in the UK from Moles seeds. I think they do some overseas shipping but not sure about Canada.
thank you and your voice is so sweet to listen to..
Thanks for watching.
I can only echo the previous comment below. Perfect clear explanation, Thank you. (I do wish I had a heated greenhouse rather then unheated frame though).
Thank you so much for watching. I am glad you found it helpful. My greenhouse is unheated too, so I often end up taking things indoors in the house in the winter if it’s a really cold snap and then get them back in the greenhouse when it’s milder.
Thank you 🌱
Thank you for watching 🙂
I did well with my calendula, lupins, nasturtiums, Nigella this year. My first in the Isle of Lewis. My Sweetpeas were over fed and just grew leafy and lush. I had zero success with Zinnia. I did okay with Lavatera and my snuggled in yarrow was booming; creamy, rosy blooms . Loving these vids from a similar climate pov 😂
Lupins are fantastic aren’t they and seem to like our climate. I can’t seem to manage zinnia either. I have had a lot of attempts but just can’t get them to thrive here. My sweet peas were really good last year so I am hoping to grow more this year. I will have to get them started when this cold spell is over. You would have had some great colour in your garden last year with the nasturtiums, calendula and yarrow.
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm I spread my colour around this isle. All raised in my porch. Hardened off in plastic storage boxes or not at all. Sowed seeds and local polygrubs and LHHP were gifted me 😁🙏🤸♥️
Is it possible to make your own germinating compost? Where can i find a heated propagting bench?
It is possible to make your own germinating compost. I sometimes use the compost sieved from our homemade supply for seed germinating and can add a bit of vermiculite, perlite or sand to it. We made our heated propagating bench ourselves. Here is a link talking through how we did it How To Make A DIY Heated Propagation Bench | Seed Growing | DIY Propagator ua-cam.com/video/wZsRzmNCXyU/v-deo.html
I am binge watching you Highly recommend ❤
Thank you so much for watching and I am really glad you are enjoying my videos. Hopefully I will get some new ones out next year when the growing season starts again.
I love tapping the canal banks for marsh Woundwort, yarrow, Mugwort. I did a friend's wedding flowers from the banks of the Leeds / Liverpool canal. Meadowsweet is beautifully scented too
That’s amazing you did a friends flowers from what you could source down by the canal. It would have been beautiful and very natural. Meadowsweet does smell lovely in the summer.
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm they looked and smelt divine
I love Statice. Especially the way it will flower in the vase ❤
I love statice too. It’s so versatile using it fresh or dried, so many colours to choose from and stands up really well in any flower arranging out of water.
I fell in love with Nigella this year . From seed in my porch. Transplanted to beds in Lews Castle grounds and at Habost polygrubs as well as the garden pots. Really enjoyed this Love from Balallan Isle of Lewis ❤
Nigella is such an amazing flower and such pretty varieties you can grow. A great self seeder too! That’s great you got some lovely ones flowering last year. Are there any other cut flowers you have had success growing? You are in such an amazingly beautiful part of the world and we have spent some very happy holidays in the Hebrides. Thanks for watching 🙂
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm cosmos, lupins, calendula all did well 🙏
I sow in cell trays w/ humidity domes as well. So many other flower farmers use the soil blocking method. Have you tried soil blocking and, if so, what was your experience w/ it! Thank you!!!
Hello, thanks for watching and Happy New Year! Yes so many people do use soil blocking now. I have never tried it. I suppose because I have found a way that works for me with the trays. I think I always was hesitant to try soil blocking as I thought the soil blocks would dry out quickly if I did not keep on top of it and I was not sure I would get the composition right when making up the blocks. I think if I had more time then maybe I would experiment to see which worked better for me. Maybe something for the future!
Great advice. Just what I was looking for
Thanks so much for watching. I am glad you found it helpful.
I just LOVE to seeing and listening to the rain in my garden !! So much wanted by me and my plants !!
Very nice information
Thank you very much for watching. I am glad you enjoyed it.
Absolutely gorgeous ❤ may I ask you what is the name of the spirea you used ? Want to get the same . Thanks so much for videos
Thanks so much for watching 😊 the name of the spirea is spirea bridal wreath. I love using it in bouquets.
When is the right time to cut them? One of mine has three bloomsand three buds that will be blooming soon
The best time to cut amaryllis for the longest vase life is before the flowers open but the buds are full and soft. You can cut them when they are in flower but the vase life will be shorter. You could always snip off any blooms that are starting to fade so you can still enjoy the other buds when they come out.
Thank you for such a comprehensive video.
Thank you very much for watching. I am glad you enjoyed the video.
I really like your sessions Very informative
Thank you so much, I am really glad you are enjoying them.
I love linaria or (blue toadflax)! They smell heavenly 😊
They are lovely, so pretty 😍
Thanks a lot, this is on the list for 2025
Thanks so much for watching. It’s a great annual to grow. I hope it’s successful for you next year.
