I think you are right. I thought I could do a bit of a comparison sow some now in late winter and see if I got germination and then repeat in the autumn and see if they will germinate for me over the winter. We are still pretty cold here at the moment and waking up to 1c this week so it may be cold enough to get them germinating now 🤞
I started some Ladies Mantle from seed this year, almost 100% germination. They are so tiny and cute. I'm going to grow them on a bit longer before planting them out.
That’s fantastic you got such good germination. Good luck growing them on. No germination here so far but it’s still early days. Tomorrow is my garden day so I will check on them then.
@@fionnflah1846 I started them in a cell tray, it did take a while for them to germinate, once they did, I put them under grow lights, and they are growing slowly. I should be able to plant them out in a few weeks.

Thank you ☺️ I hope if you have another go with eryngium it works for you as it is so lovely.I used new seed this time rather than seed from last year and it has surprisingly germinated really quickly. A bit of bottom heat, moist seed compost and a humidity dome over the top. The night temperatures in the greenhouse were very low about 1c.
I’m sowing perennials too 😄 (autumn over here) trying delphiniums, Fama Scabiosa, lupins, monarda, Veronica, eucalyptus- almost went for the ladies mantel too but didn’t know how easy it would be to germinate! Also have you considered sowing straight into cell trays or soil blocks vs the small tray then pricking out/potting on etc? It might be a good time saver for you now that you’re back doing two jobs?? It’s what I do and works well - can use burlap to cover the cell trays in lieu of humidity dome while germinating. Just a thought! Thanks for the lovely videos ❤

Thanks so much for the tip. The soil blocks would definitely be a time saver and I have always been quite fascinated seeing growers that use them. The one reason I like potting on at this time of year is to bury any leggy stems and get a stronger plant. With the light levels not great and a lot of grey days the seedlings can get leggy pretty quickly here if I am not watching them! That is a good tip about the burlap too, thank you ☺️

Interested to hear how it goes with your ladies mantel- I might try them in spring if it’s reasonably straight forward. And totally makes sense re the leggy seedlings! If you do ever go down the soil blocking route I recommend trying what’s called a ‘swift blocker’ where you can choose slightly bigger blocks than the usual mini which make better transplants and is easier to use at any kind of scale. I believe Sarah from bloom & gray is stockist in the uk. They’re not cheap but should last a lifetime. Looking forward to living vicariously through your garden as we head into winter over here - thanks for keeping up with the channel while you’re busy with everything else ☺️
Hi thanks so much for watching and I am really glad you are enjoying the videos. Using the humidity dome really is personal preference as you can germinate any flower seeds without it. I like to use it at this time of year to keep the warm moisture from the heated propagator in and promote germination when the weather is still cool and greenhouse unheated. Later when it is warmer I sometimes don’t use one as I seeds germinate quickly under the better conditions and I just make sure the soil I am using in the trays is moist. So for me humidity dome use is more about the conditions for seed sowing at the time rather than which varieties of flower I use them for.

I find Astrantia germination rate very good when sown in autumn in an in unheated greenhouse. They do prefer cold stratification x

I think it needs cool temperatures my eryngium has germinated with no assistance, just leaving it to do it's thing. It's a slow grower though
