Thanks for another great episode. I gift knit socks and catnip stuffed cat toys for the grand kittens. If you want some color theory inspiration, you should check out Shannon from Whiskey and Wool. She’s a very talented knitter and spinner who discusses color theory frequently in her podcasts. Happy Holidays! Ps, I’m currently knitting the Alaska sweater.
@@bridgetbrimm9893 thank you for watching! That’s so cute!! And thank you for the recommendation. I will be checking out her channel tonight! And are you liking the Alaska sweater?? What colors did you choose??
@ I’m using Knit Picks city tweed in Kelp and cascade 220 in charcoal for the colorwork. The pattern is written really well. I saw in one of the projects on Ravelry that the knitter liked the fit so well she was knitting another without colorwork. I’m hoping it becomes my go-to raglan too. Right now the Tolsta and Autumn League are tied for that role.
@ that will be beautiful! I love that the pattern is so great!!
Feeling the shout-out love! ❤ As you know, I tried minimizing gift knits this year, which totally worked! ... up until I decided to make things interesting with a quick hat project this morning. Tis the season! I purchased Iris as well! I can't wait to see how our sweaters turn out!
@@MissMelodyMakes yesssss I love the last minute cast on 😂 I love that we can both have our own Iris sweaters!
I wonder if it's because you would knit the sleeves in the round at a tighter guage because there is a smaller circumferance. I f you know your guage on 4m socks for example, you would know.
@@bettygraham818 yes, I think generally that does happen!

I adore Wicked. I’ve seen the play about 4 or 5 times so I scooted to the movie ASAP! Loved it and would go again in a heart beat, but just haven’t had the chance yet. I think your wicked knits are spot on. I may have to borrow that idea and throw a Wicked inspired knit into my mix. I am working on the Half and Half Triangle shawl by Purl SoHo in a Royal blue and white for my granddaughter for Christmas. She is in her second year of college at U of Ky and blue and white are the school colors. 🤞that I get it done in time. It will be close. Also knit a cabled hat in Clinton Cashmere for my daughter for Christmas. It is in Jason’s Cashmere Hat by Sweet Fiber. That’s the extent of my gift knitting this year. I subbed as soon as I heard you gushing about Wicked. Love that show. Merry a Christmas.
@@cherylclough4309 yay, I’m so glad you love wicked too! Thank you for watching! Your gift knits sound fabulous!! Good luck getting it done in time!
I would do the collar first, then finish the sleeves and the body. Only then you will be able to see the actual length since the collar will cinch it all in. I think that the designer's intention is to use the collar to make final adjustments as you mentioned, though starting with the collar seems more efficient - and it will save you from pre-blocking.
@@ewoslawa80 thank you for your advice!
This year is my first year gift knitting, but I think I have been way to ambitious with two sweaters, a pair of mittens and a scarf ! This has been a lesson for me because one of the sweaters won't be finished so I've knitted a promise keeper instead to show that it is coming haha ! Next year will be much smaller projects but I love the intention behind the gifts so I will do it again :)

I had to ask my mom who taught me to knit and she told me (and she has a super-memory!) that I was 5 years old and was watching a lady knit and then started doing it. I do remember being very young and watching a lady knit and thinking “oh, so that’s what she’s doing!” I must have been five. On and off knitting ever since then, but in earnest again since 2010. @@Sweet_Makings that is so special. I love that! And thank you!! I really love how the port jacket turned out.
I learned to knit and crochet from my grandmother. My girls do not enjoy crafts, so I do everything by myself. I made sweaters for my grandchildren when they were little. Love your videos.
@@susanbajdek6698 that’s so cool! I love that! Thanks for watching!
My mom taught me how to knit a scarf, a co-worker from Newfoundland taught me to knit a sweater (we were working in Yellowknife, NWT), and then UA-cam taught me during COViD! I was told in university that wool fibres have “hooks” (like crochet hooks) along their fibres and that hot water causes the fibres to shrink up and the hooks hook together and can never go back. Hope you get my poor explanation!
@@kathyellis2506 thats so cool you learned from different sources! And okay, that explanation makes more sense! Thank you!
Happy birthday Savannah!
@@alliknit thank you so much!!
I taught myself to crochet when I was about 6 or 7 from a Red Heart how to book, I learned to knit from my mom. My 1st knitting projects were socks. I was a preteen at the time, so I have been crocheting for 60+ years and knitting for 50+ years.
@@jeanmay1413 oh wow!! That’s amazing!!
I’ve shaved the yarn to make it less fuzzy.
@@sallythompson2635 I need to do that too! Do you use a de-piller? Or a brush?
@ I actually used a razor like you use to shave with. It worked really good.
@ oh, perfect! Thank you!
My Mom taught me how to crochet when I was 4 or 5yrs old simply to keep me out of her hair, my Grandma was the one that encouraged me to make stuff overall with yarn/sewing/embroidery/etc; I did crochet for a few decades before I suddenly (in 2004) wanted to teach myself how to knit socks specifically - I went to the library to find a book and I also stumbled on a website Silver's sock knitting class. And then in Nov 2007, I discovered Ravelry.
@@theyarngoeson that’s so cool!!
My Aunts were phenomenal knitters … when I was born in the early 60s they were SO happy to have a girl to knit for they knit me dresses and suits and sweaters galore. One aunt tried to teach me ( they knit continental style ) .. it didn’t work . When I was 20 my mom showed me a picture of a hand knit sweater from a woman’s magazine and said she thought I could make it . I taught myself from the little green pamphlet book a lot of us learned from in that timer period . Taught myself crochet same book . Our winters getting so mild in NJ I use a heavy hand knit cardigan made with a zipper as my coat all winter .

Hey Savannah I have just started the Port Jacket (also in light grey 😊). Ozetta writes beautiful and clear patterns, this is my fourth one of her patterns. I was taught to knit by my grandma and my mum a very long time ago!
@@janinef66 oh yay! We can be matching! I can’t wait to knit more of her patterns. And I love that your family taught you!
My grandmother taught me to crochet and knit when I was probably around 10 and I've been doing it for over 50 years. Most of my learning comes from UA-cam now.
@@jla110661 I love that your grandmother taught you!
Happy birthday! I always enjoy your podcast. I learned to crochet at church when I was a tween. They taught us how to make granny squares, which were to be joined to make a stuffed elephant. I had to miss the night when they gave introductions for the assembly so I never finished the project. I also, learned to knit from UA-cam.
@@whome2289 thank you!! That’s cool you learned at church! And isn’t UA-cam the best?
Happy Birthday! I love that your mom went to a yarn shop to buy you yarns... so sweet 💖 I learned the basics of knitting from my grandmother when I was about 13. I did the TKGA Master Hand Knitting level 1 certification a few years ago and after MANY MANY years of knitting, I was quite surprised by how much I learned from it. I am a self taught crocheter, but a couple of years ago I did Toni Lipsey's Crochet Academy in an attempt to hone my crochet skills as I like to use it to make accessories for the charity doll making that I do.
@@nicannjones I love that you’ve learned from different sources!! ❤️

Forgot to add that I am self taught , I was about 10 and I looked at a book and figured it out (I am 60) this was years before the internet and UA-cam , I’ve learnt so much more since the internet 😊
@@debbiebrannam8252 thank you so much! That’s so impressive you learned out of a book!!
My mom taught me the long tail cast on and garter stitch when I was around 8, but I was more into crochet. I had to relearn as an adult through UA-cam. It was Marly Bird as a matter of fact. Now Nimble Needles is my favorite channel for new stitches and techniques. I'm glad your next pair of socks is fitting well! I made a sweater in lett lopi and can't wear it against my skin. Sounds like I need to frog that thing and make a cardigan. 😁
That’s so cool! Love that!! And yeah, a cardigan sounds like it would be a better option!!
I think you should keep your cardigan this way, it is very beautiful already and you will see if you really need the double-knitted cuff by using it :) I wasn't here last time so I am Manon and I come from Bourges in the center of France ! I haven't knitted any accessory for me yet, they were always gifts, but I bought the pattern for the Moonwake cowl by Andrea Mowry and I can't wait to knit it 😍 It makes me dream of cosy winter walks in the frosty weather ❄️
@@Sweet_Makings thank you for that validation! I think you’re right! And welcome!! France sounds lovely. And that cowl sounds glorious.
Well done for the progress on your Port jacket ! Mine is coming along veryyyyy slowly, I'm afraid. Love the red and white mittens, absolutely stunning! I'm taking part in a short cowl kal, only 6 days, as I like to wear cowls or scarves in the winter. Hats make me too hot, 😁
@@cazs5474 thank you! Slow is totally okay! I’ve never made a cowl, but they seem so versatile and useful!
I am an Only Child (super first-think perfectionist on steroids), and I would let the lack of double knit on the sleeves as is. It wouldn’t both me the same way, say, an error in color work would.

As a parentified eldest daughter, I get it. I am almost always team rip it out and do it right, but in this case, I don't think it's worth it. I'd finish the sleeve just like the other, but if its weighing on you -I would knit to the point you need to do the double knitting on the second sleeve, put those stitches on barber cord, and then knit the button band. Come back and finish the sleeves in the way you deem fit with the amount of yarn you have left.

Favorite accessory: Sophie Scarf. Idea re: your Port Jacket: maybe put the 2nd sleeve sts on hold before you start the ribbing there and go and do your double knitting button band and collar. That way, you can see how you are doing on yarn and make your sleeve finish decision at that point.
@@annehuntley2318 love the Sophie scarf! And that’s a great idea. Thank you!
I can't wait to see how your project bag comes out! I love my Traveler hat. The colors make me happy and it keeps me warm while camping. It's a hard call on the double knitting. I'm also a perfectionist but given the yarn situation and it's already done... I'd probably leave it and match the other cuff. Knitting has helped me get better at mistakes and choosing my battles too. It's still hard and occupies my mind way too much when it happens. Lol!
@@MissMelodyMakes thank you Melody!! I need to see this traveler hat! And I appreciate your insight on the cuff. I think I’m leaning in that direction as well.
My favorite accessory is, as always, my Red is best mittens by Jane Richmond. I live in a cold-but-not-too-cold climate (but humid, uh…) so I really enjoy the flexibility of the flaps. In terms of Vlogmases, on top of Laura Penrose’s one, I love watching Skeindeer knits and Memade by Moomeemo (or something like that… we don’t have these cartoon characters in France).
