As an Indigenous person I find your commentary insightful. I'm an Indigenous Studies major and our thoughts on this collection are largely aligned. Well done!
I sometimes find it challenging to avoid adopting paternalistic attitudes toward Indigenous people who have had less fortunate experiences than me. It is important to remember that Indigenous people can enter into business without people needing to worry about them. It can lead to bias, that could lead to fewer commercial loans, and thus fewer opportunities for Indigenous peoples.

Totally agree. Approaching this topic was challenging and I definitely didn’t do it perfectly. And of course there will be so many different opinions on this collaboration from within the tribes/communities that were involved. There’s no right or wrong answer but transparency and education I think are the most important thing so people can form their own opinions. I really have no relation to the involved tribes so I was trying to approach it from a non-paternalistic view while also discussing the topic effectively. Thank you for your insight!

I found your expectation that there should be some kind of continuing collaboration with the Native American groups and artisans to be somewhat unrealistic. Especially the expectation that it should extend beyond the current season and into the next. To hire artisans and musicians from these tribes was in itself engaging with the community, in a way that a lot of other fashion houses wouldn't even bother to do. While we might think something like investing a portion of sales into Native American advocacy groups and non-profits would be nice, this isn't common practice when motifs from other cultures are borrowed from. For example, when Louis Vuitton made special pieces to celebrate Chinese New Year, there wasn't an expectation for them to forge relationships with Chinese communities. Don't get me wrong, it would be great if they continue to employ Native artisans, I just don't think that by doing so they are then obligated to engage in philanthropy (performative or sincere). If this was the case then it would be easier for fashion houses to not employ Indigenous artisans whatsoever for fear of criticism or public mis-step somewhere down the line.

But overall thank you for this video, I thought your commentary on poverty and access were very poignant to the larger conversation surrounding this collection. Looking forward to more!

Thank you! Probably! I can’t speak on behalf of native Americans but I’m sure some don’t mind this at all while others will hate it. Really is something personal to each individual and their opinions on cultural appropriation vs appreciation

Yo it’s you. Pharrell is a Native American, an indigenous person to North America, he’s telling our story. This is the first positive review/feedback from “fashion UA-cam” on anything Pharrell or Louis Vuitton. All the other people took the “get off my lawn” fashion elitist approach, highlighting Pharrell’s “otherness” let’s call it that, we all know what the real reason is for there dislike of a man who if not for this appointment was already a cultural icon and fashion and music legend like on a level all his own with just him Kanye. The producer, rapper, singer, clothing brand owner archetype where it’s just him and Kanye and Tyler and that’s where it ends. There’s a bit of ultra liberal left wing virtue signaling towards the end, all of which is all quite thought provoking and a bit depressing or “Debby downerist”. The it’s like yeah you’ve got a point but then again those people got paid, and got a hell of a Parisian vacation and got to work with Louis Vuitton. I’m sure they were happy.

Pharrell is not native American. Does he have some native American ancestry? Yes, does that make him native American? No. Native Americans care about your land ties, how were u raised, are u participating in the culture? Pharrell has none of that

8:34 its weird how u say the collection did a great job at uplifting native voices /art but the artist themselves spoke up abt how they didnt really know what was going with the launch, messy boots.... You should take a look at how Ralph Lauren does a collab with native American artists

Nope, sorry. The 1st cowboys were Spanish and Hispanics, yes there were a few black cowboys (u can be black and be Hispanic btw), but that style originated from the Spaniard Conolization.
