Listen to Great performances from the past, on antique phonographs from their era (1903 or so to 1942 or so).
These shellac recordings are time capsules that are able to transport us back in time....nice feeling.

1911. John McCormack sings-She is Far from the Land -by Moore-Lambert, w/orchestra
Beloved Irish tenor John McCormack recorded this song with orchestra in 1911 on the Victor label (74242). This is its first pressing. It is single sided.
The text was written by the Irish poet Thomas Moore (1779-1832).
It was set to an Irish Ayre.
Beautiful poem!
In 1897 the composer Frank Lambert had his version published, which John McCormack sings here.
Played here on a 1921 Victrola IX with a steel needle.
Recorded at 78 RPM.
This record, as you can imagine, was wildly popular. It's such a heart-wrencher!!
Poem(lyrics):
She is far from the land where her young hero sleeps,
And lovers around her are sighing,
But coldly she turns from their gazes and weeps,
For her heart in his grave is lying.
She sings the wild songs of her dear native plains,
Every note which he lov'd awaking;
Ah! Little they think who delight in her strains,
How the heart of the Minstrel is breaking.
He had lived for his love, for his country he died,
They were all that to life had entwined him;
Nor soon shall the tears of his country be dried,
Nor long will his love stay behind him.
Nor long will his love stay behind him.
Oh! make her a grave where the sunbeams rest,
When they promise a glorious morrow,
They'll shine o'er her sleep like a smile from the West,
From her own lov'd island of sorrow.
Sleeping audience: Henry (dog)
Aoife (black cat)
Aisling (grey cat)

@@hrbooksmusic7878 heh heh. Yes....But did you know that Georges Thill was absolutely HORRIBLE to Vallin?! 1938 Germany, Kristalnacht, the beginning of the Holocaust. This is sick! 😢
Yes. Soooo many musicians were forced to flee/hide out/ get out or be imprisoned and killed. What a fraught time!! It affected musicians all over Europe. It is interesting to read who did what when. Who (which musicians) hid people in their chateaux, who escaped to America and how, and how (if)did they get back after the carnage? who did and didn’t sing for Hitler when he sent his “invitations” to perform for him. Yikes! And listen to how gorgeous this music is!
There is a great book by Ida Cook (“The Bravest Voices”) that tells the story of 2 sisters who were part of a movement to help these musicians during this period. Amelia Galli-Curci is one important singer involved in it. It’s amazing to read about these musicians we listen to and see how they coped.
Delightful and distinctly French !
