The Art of Pie (featuring my Mother!)

My mother shows us how to make an oil-based pie crust using a classic Betty Crocker recipe. She's been using this recipe for as long as I can remember and the family still goes nuts for it. It's wonderfully flaky and delicate and simply to die for! A staple of any holiday feast. This was recorded in December 2022 at my parent's home in Costa Rica, hence the Christmas music and tropical attire. ...

DECAYING TROMBONE LEADPIPE: Holton TR180 Bass Trombone
Good video, thanks for the excellent advice.....
I am an amateur player. I play on a Wick and really like it. I've been playing for 54 years, and switched to a week in my 20s. It has been a really good choice. Very comfortable on the lips without that sharp edge. I've tried other "name brand" mouthpieces and keep coming back to them. It's been a great choice. Solid in every register. It's a good choice.
Great.
Hi Brian. I found your video very interesting. Thanks! Specially because I recently observed in my 30 year Bach 42 the end of the leadpipe was almost like the one you showed. Does it really affects the sound? I have to see how to upgrade my leadpipe to a good design configuration. But problem is Bach trombones don't have a threaded receiver for the leadpipe...thanks!
You can usually take any threaded pipe to a brass repair tech and they'll be able to remove the threads for you.
By chance, is that a Sigma Nu badge on your tuba case?
Nope, an IATSE badge, an old camp sticker, Uncle Seiko and an sE Electronics sticker.
I studied with Denis Wick in 1969. Bought a 4AL from him. I guess machining wasn't as reliably precise back in those days. He took it out of the box and tried it before letting me have it "to be sure it's a good one". There must have been some individual hand work in finishing them back then because the 4AL lettering is a bit wobbly! I guess that's why he insisted on trying it out for me
I used to play on a Golf Denis Wick 3AL
I am a lapsed player having not played trombone for many, many, years. When I had a small bore instrument I found my "sweet spot" using the 7CS mouthpiece giving both range a clarity for the music I was playing (largely brass band at the time). 30 years ago I upgraded to a large bore Yamaha YSL681B model and discovered that Denis Wick did not produce a large bore equivalent of this mouthpiece. In the end I opted for the 6BL which was close but never really the same. It produced a good tone and mid & lower ranges were solid, but I could never hit the upper register notes (C, D, E, F) with the same clarity or, in some cases, at all with the 6BL. Briefly switched to a 9BL which gave me the upper range back, but at the cost of a less full lower range, so settled on the 6BL for general purpose playing coupled with a heavy top booster. Despite having not played in years it always mystified me why there was never a 7CL or non-Wick large bore equivalent of the 7CS.
I’m ready to go win the football game!!!

After using a Schilke 51 for many years, I have switched to the Dennis Wick 5AL. I play on an older Conn 88H. I'm really impressed with the response I'm getting on the Wick compared to my Schilke. Feels more comfortable on my lip. How does the 4 compare to the 5AL that I just purchased.
The 4AL is a slightly wider inner diameter, slightly deeper cup, slightly larger Venturi. It will definitely feel bigger.
@@Slidefunk Thanks for the info! I didn't try the 4AL. I think coming from the Schilke 51, the 5AL was a good fit for me. Was looking for a slightly smaller cup and the 4AL would have had me going the other way?
@@marathonkev I'm not as familiar with Schilke's system, but I think the 5AL is likely most similar to the 51
Hey, this was an amazing review and told me LITERALLY everything i need to know. And looking at these updated models (with the buckle on the bell section), this case is a great deal for the price. Can I ask what trombone stand, and travel music stand you had in your side pouch at 4:23 ? I don't think my trombone stand would fit and I'm looking for a good travel stand and would rather get one that fit in my case. 凸
Thanks for the kind words! The trombone stand is from K&M, I believe the 14985. It's heavy but sturdy and collapses down well. The music stand is something generic off of Amazon, I believe.
@@Slidefunk I appreciate it! Do you have experience with the Protec MAX for tenor trombone? It seems to be a lot cheaper at the expense of less padding. But it includes a music folder pocket and I believe is a little smaller. I’m heading into the college soon and am just trying to get the best deal for my money.
@@tonyandrade1731 I've seen a few of them at music stores. They are certainly lighter weight than the Pro Pac, being made from a foam shell. They also lack the inner flap covering the slide. If you are just going to be carrying the horn around campus it would be a great light weight alternative. If you have to fly home from school with the horn a few times a year, the Pro Pac is the way to go..
@@Slidefunk Good thing for me… I’m staying in state lol. Although, when you’re making a purchase that determines the safety of your horn, you never can be too safe. I’ll think I’ll end up with the Pro Pac. Thank you again for your help!!
what are these mouthpieces
Bach 5g, Wick 4AL Heavyweight, Marcinkiewics 8H, Wick 9BS Heritage
The crust was way too dry. It's usually easier than this. So embarrassing!
Does anybody have input on the Laskey 59MD? I have a Laskey 59D which I love but it is too dark and muskey for me. Lacks the clarity and projection wanted. But the 59D is a perfect match otherwise, for my Conn 88H. Thank you and am a subscriber to this channel. Lot of good stuff! Will keep coming back for sure.
Have not yet tried the Wick mouthpieces but noticed they look very similar to the Josef Kleir mouthpieces. I have used them (JK Exclusive 5BL and the 5CL) and really like them. Need to try the Denis Wick for sure. Each player has their own results. I think my favorite is the Schilke Symphony Series. Particularly the M5.2 one. Great projection, fullness, and powerful sound. The medium cup took some getting used to in terms of less deepness in the sound but the medium cup fits better for what I am playing I guess. Also I like the Laskey 59D. Would love to try the 59MD which has a medium size cup. Always fun to try different mouthpieces. Denis Wick 4 is definitely on my list of the next one to try. Great video and thanks for posting it.
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video!
This makes me want to learn trombone!
is that 4bs? or exactly 4?
4m. It's made to fit a euro shank euphonium

I bet u can steal the show in Hadestown! The greatest trombone that I've ever seen 👏
So, the true hero who understands structural difference of mouthpiece was Mr. Giardinelli, then? *I searched about Mr. Giardinelli, and now I feel very much guilty of not knowing him at all...
Cozy!
Thank you for this video!
Glad it was helpful!
Can I fly with this product?
Flying with instruments always presents risk of damage. I have flown using this case several times. I always gate check the case. It generally does not fit overhead in the plane. I haven't sustained any damage to the horns. I would not check this case at the luggage counter.
Noooo not the ears!!!
Hunchback?
You got it!
You’re excellent doing videos very well done and informative to us trombone nerds. I enjoy your lessons I am just an intermediate player…I have troubles with doodle tonguing or any articulation I can use to smooth out my articulation from note to note. I lack Imagination when needing to play a string of notes that are the same. I use the da’ syllable and that sounds chunky and boring. I hope you do a video on phrasing and a variety of syllable options we can use as we move through the horn. I always look forward to your videos you’re easy to listen to and we learn a lot.
Song name?
Overture from "Chicago"
I am moving from a french horn to trombone. Most of my playing will be either jazz/swing or concert band music. Should I be using a conical mouthpiece (such as the one second from the right), which is what the french horn mouthpiece is similar to? Or should I still look at using a cup-shaped mouthpiece, such as the Denis Wick Heritage?
Because the size of the mouthpiece is so different, I'd focus on finding the right cup diameter first. Start with a Bach 6.5 or something similar. Once you become more comfortable with the trombone you can experiment with different sizes/manufactures
@@Slidefunk Thank you, Brian.
I don't know how but somehow I was able to keep up with all the lyrical parts. Except for when you skipped the Fates and Persephone introductiosn, after that I pretty much got the hang of it. Lovely rendition. Brian Drye would be proud
Does he have a brother named John?
I'm also a fan of Denis Wick mouthpieces and mutes. I'm not a pro-player like Brian and just play in a church orchestra. In that role, I find a need to be very versatile as I need to switch between a small bore and a large bore trombone, a euphonium, and a bass trumpet. I have Wick mouthpieces for all of the above. I also have an Eb tuba and a King 6B symphonic bass trombone that when needed on rare occasions, also use Wick mouthpieces.
gorgeous!
@hadestown - this is so well done!!

So I’m trying to make a LARGE stationary horn, bass trombone range and as warm a tone as possible. I’m absolutely stumped as to which instrument’s mouthpiece I should use. I’m only familiar with French horn, so I was going to use the largest cup diameter French horn mouthpiece I could find, but I don’t know anymore. Any thoughts?
Like an Alphorn? That's a great question, I'm not sure I can give you a good answer. I think given the instrument's likely purpose, I would lean towards a large tenor trombone or euphonium mouthpiece. Something in the Bach 3 or 4 range. If you want something a little larger, I like the Marcinkiewicz 1.5 for it's clarity and projection.
@@Slidefunk Thank you very much! I’ll start with the tenor trombone as my local music shop has a few.
