    Hi Bob - Do you find that you can talk or eat with these in without the loudness of those activities being amplified by the ear plugs? (a.k.a. the "occlusion effect"). I would imagine the sliding port allows for some direct air sonic passage, which should do the trick. I'm looking for plugs I can wear at a noisy restaurant for example. Thanks!

    Hi Bob, thanks for the video. I'm interested in the Peterson StroboPlus HDC primarily as a tuner. You really didn't show the tuner in operation, instead concentrating almost entirely on the metronome. I really want to see what the tuner display looks like in operation. You mentioned that you are an opera singer. I'd especially love to see you singing into the unit to see how the tuner responds to, and displays, vocal input. That's mainly what I want it for. Thank you.

      @BobMakesMusic Місяць тому

      I apologize for the delay in the response. For some reason I have not gotten notifications for this page in nearly 3 years. As a tuner it is extremely fast and accurate. When singing with vibrato the tuner picks up every fluctuation of pitch. If I sing senza vibrato, I can get the tuner to stop spinning. There is a feature within Peterson Connect to slow down the speed of the strobe which does make it more useful for singers. This involves connecting the tuner to a computer and configuring a custom sweetener to have the slower speed. I will happily make a video demonstrating this if it would be helpful to you. Just let me know.

      I apologize for the delay in the response. I hadn’t gotten notifications for this page in nearly 3 years. The display on the PLUS HDC is large enough to be viewed while next to your music. I have found that the kickstand on the back provides a perfect way to mount the tuner on my music stand. Extend the kickstand and place the tuner on the top edge of the music stand as opposed to the bottom rack portion. This way the tuner is high and directly next to my music and I can glance up to check my intonation as I practice.

  • @inkpapers-1
    @inkpapers-1 3 роки тому

    I'm curious as to how well the tuner works for you as an opera singer.. and for that double bass. I also wonder if it has a flash color function when you hit the note? I know strobes are great for accuracy, but during practice to correct myself I only want to see the tuner out of the corner of my eye, not watch it carefully.

    • @BobMakesMusic
      @BobMakesMusic 3 роки тому

      That's a great question. I don't use the strobe tuner function while I am singing. The human voice, especially my type of operatic baritone, contains many overtones and the vibrato of the voice doesn't lend itself well to electronic tuners. I have done considerable work in an applied voice lab studying the human voice, particularly straight tone singing. By using spectrogram analysis we came to the conclusion that pure straight tone singing is impossible for humans to recreate. There will always be some amount of vibrato present in the voice. I have used the StroboPlus HDC as a rehearsal metronome while learning new music. I can create a tempo map on the Peterson website, import it to my HDC, and then scale the tempo back while I work to get the words pronounced correctly. The HDC allows you to dial back the tempo and it retains that ratio throughout the tempo map. It's amazingly handy. As far as flashing a color when a note is in tune, Peterson tuners are so accurate that having the display flash a different color when a note is perfectly in tune would create a strobe light effect. I have used the StroboStomp HD on my pedalboard with my upright and electric upright basses. It has a very large display and I can adjust my intonation on the fly using it. I would recommend looking into the StroboStomp HD is you have a pickup on your cello. Otherwise, consider placing the StroboPlus HDC on the stand next to your music. It has a built in kickstand for this purpose. That was a longwinded answer. Thanks for giving me some great points to make in my upcoming demo videos!

      @@BobMakesMusic Thanks for that informative reply. I will look forwards to your demonstration! I've been thinking of the clip on version but holding out to see what this new one is fully capable of. No pickup on my cello, I just have a little cheapie Fender tuner clipped on the bridge. I didn't know that about tuners and operatic singing.. that does explain the last time I looked at some singing in Melodyne and found tones all over the place. I hadn't thought it through. An applied voice lab sounds like quite an interesting experience, hope you go into that more in the future too. Nothing like a good baritone! A cellist is someone who appreciates the baritone range! The first four voices of the metronome: rimshot, clave, woodblock, and beep are quite loud. In this video I was wearing a lav mic under my shirt and I had to turn the volume of the HDC to about 1/3 to keep the mic from clipping while I filmed. Hello! I think the Slides are more comfortable over time. They have foam ear tips that form to your ear shape. That said, for plastic earplugs, the High Fidelity earplugs are rather comfortable. I don’t notice as much chewing sound in my ear when I speak or sing with the Slides and I do the High Fidelity. As far as attenuation the Slides are 22 dB reduction and the High Fidelity is 21 dB. Real life use though I think the High Fidelity cuts more lows and low mids than the Slides. The Slides seem more true to my ears. I hope that answers your question. They’re similar, but different.

    Thank you so much for your great review! I was a bass clarinetist and drum major years ago, and I appreciate your concert-based perspective. I’ve been tossing between etymotics, eargasm, and zound (lost my last pair) - I think I know which one to pickup next 👍🏽💯

      itsglazed I’m glad this helped. I like having the slide function to flip between medium and maximum protection. As you know, things can get very loud in an orchestra. The Slide earplugs don’t filter out as much low and high frequency as some others that I’ve used. The spectrum is still rather full, just more quiet. I hope you like them as much as I do.

      Thomas White and this was me speeding through so I didn’t make an hours long video. There are a lot of design elements that I left out. There are honestly so many tonal options, it really is versatile. Thank you.

    Thanks for the review. Did you purchase these, or receive them from Eargasm??

      Hi! I did receive these as a test pair from Eargasm. I have purchased three pairs of their High Fidelity earplugs in the past, and they reached out to me about trying the Slide earplugs. As I said in the video, I was bringing two pairs of plugs into the orchestra pit with me, my Eargasm HF, and another brand, and switching throughout the shows. Now I only need one pair, and I’m very happy with these.

      Bob Makes Music thanks. I found them to block out too much sound while playing music.

      smtesta you found the Slide earplugs to block too much sound or the High Fidelity?

      Bob Makes Music - the Slides blocked too much sound. I play rhythm guitar and could barely hear my guitar. I have plugs similar to high fidelity and might purchase those to try out. The slides are really well made though and if they had silicon tips it might do the trick for me.

      smtesta have you tried the Hearos High Fidelity? I found them to not lower enough db and they cut too much low for me as a bassist. They allowed a good amount of mid range and highs in, they may be a better fit for rhythm guitar.
