Achievements promote playing games in arbitrary and often un-fun ways just for additional dopamine hits. I have a fair number of platinum trophies, and they all entailed looking at guides + engaging in mindless repetition. But the worst part of achievement hunting is that it disincentivizes spontaneity and creativity.

This was a great video! I got into UR trophy hunting a couple years ago and I’m always looking for new games with some UR trophies to add to my collection.

That's cool, but what does old and new mean? How old and how new? Is og Alone in the Dark scarier than Alien Isolation? Is Sweet Home scarier than Amnesia the Bunker? Such a mindless title

I'm glad I'm not crazy. I thought this game was super hard but didn't want to ask if other people thought it was hard. The game is fun but coming in as a casual was wrong

I win with most characters except coda and i want to do all zone with the characters that won't be a pain to win, ironically even tho bolt isn't the hardest character i hate it with my soul, not even aria and monk combined are equal as how bad i felt with bolt, i knew i could beat aria and monk eventually, is skill, remembering pattern, trying again, and i enjoy both and took my time and it felt great when i beat it, but it was so bad with bolt that i didn't try to explore to get more items just go straight to the exit and grab a weapon if i can, it literally changes a lot of encounters for having to obligatory move two spaces, and i just couldnt bother to try to learn it for one character that is infuariting on itself, seriously at least give me one free use of the frog boot before taking damage so i can reposition, I CAN'T GO TO THE EXIT IN THE 4 FLOOR BECAUSE I BREAK EVERYTHING IN 1 PICKAXE I HAVE TO OBLIGATORY TAKE 1 HEART OF DAMAGE TO JUST PASS THE LEVEL, i seriously don't know why the developers wanted us to suffer so much for creating that character

The only time achievements were annoying was when I was watching my friend play sekiro. He knew the headless ape was gonna get back up because no achievement showed up

Good achievements enhance the gameplay experience by encouraging discovery, introducing new elements, or inspiring players to try different approaches. I also enjoy tackling challenging achievements, but they shouldn’t be so demanding that failure leads to wasting hours of effort.

honestly, i think the achievements in rdr2 are great because it's for those that what to learn everything about the game and what it can do. it is tedious to examine every animal and complete all those mini-games and roles (hunting, fishing, gambling, etc) but those super tedious achievements are for the completionists. also they're completely optional and don't impact that much of the game's story other than providing additional gameplay and high rarity gear which are not needed to complete the game.

Achievements are about showing what you've done at the end of the play session / game. It's not important to unlock everything.

If someone has a problem with seeing that they don't have 100% completion of a game they dont want to get 100% in and are annoyed by it its entirely, ENTIRELY their own problem. The entire community that enjoys achivements should give them up because people who dont care about achievements (or even if they do) get annoyed at not having 100% in a game???? That is such a selfish way to think. If you feel like have you enjoyed RDR2 for example, and you feel like the achievements are painful or boring, just learn to ignore them. You have no obligation to get them, and if an incomplete game bother you so much, you need to grow as a person, and I dont mean that in an insulting way, just learn to let unimportant things not bother you. Same goes to the people who are obseesed with them, the ones who have 100% in every game or they dont play games because of them etc. Yeah I don't like that either, I would never do it, but let people play however they want, they do not affect you in any way, and I doubt they make even 1% of players woldwide anyways. To me, achievements are like a museum of my gaming journey, I can always look back at some game's list, see one achievement, and the memory of how I got it comes back.

I really want to finish Aria to get the storyline done. Everything else is... well whatever. I don't think I'm invested enough for a Coda clear. But Aria clear already seems so daunting.

I mean... you can just play the game normally and put it aside once you finished all main and side quests, and simply ignore the stupid grindy achievements. You don't HAVE to get them.

It gets to a point where achieving a platinum ends up being a source of regret and shame rather than pride and satisfaction.

Normally these random video recommendations are garbage but I was pleased with this. Notably sharing the same example with you on a bad achievements game: rdr2. It is inarguable that rdr2 is an amazing game and on playing it I set out to get all the achievements. In my case I didn't get the game from steam so my achievements aren't stored. I just want to experience the game fully, and achievements for me are a way to do that. But as I played the game certain aspects became too arduous and interrupted my experience. I'm very thorough and ensure I explore every area before moving and, and used the special vision very often. However in my full playthrough I only found 3 dinosaur bones and not a single rock carving. This put me off otherwise fun achievements like legendary animals. On the other hand, I felt god of war ragnarok did a great job. Unlike rdr2, I wasn't planning on getting the achievements, I just wanted to experience the story. But, notably, the placement of the odin ravens aligned very well with the narrative and exploration, and to my surprise towards the end I had only missed two. This really motivated me to go back and get the last few before finishing the game, and I event went on to get all the nornir chest. They did a great job with that one

finished the game in 25 hours and did every trophy except for one! *that trophy turns out to be 25 more hours of grinding the same thing for no reason*

Wow, genuinely impressed with the quality of your work here, especially considering the size of your channel. Keep at it! You raise some really good points, I feel like the only game I ever genuinely enjoyed getting 100% achievements in were Celeste and Another Crab's Treasure. Didn't feel like I was being forced to go above and beyond after completing the games. Like don't get me wrong, Celeste 100% is tedious and difficult but that's because *the game* is. There's no artificial tediousness or grind thrown in just for the sake of inflating the total amount of time it takes to 100% it. Yakuza 0 on the other hand is one of my favourite games of all time but the achievements are bovine excrement. I set out to complete it and gave up around 80h in because it made me so burnt out and frustrated with the game.

for me it's like this... I would never force myself to do 100% achievements. I tried a couple of times on games that i really enjoyed and now i think of them with sorrow (MGRR fuck those training missions). But some games (mainly indie I noticed) do achievements well. Ziggurat was my last game i 100% it and it was a game that i already enjoyed, and achievements just gave me more of an incentive to finish and learn the game more. Some games just want you to feel misery.

There is a special place in hell, for devs that have several difficulties, with the requirement to play through the whole game on each. With no unlock for the easier, if you complete the game on the hardest the first time.

My biggest thing is missables or those that are on the hardest difficulty trophies, especially the once where it wipes your saves on death. Permadeath and Iron Man modes are just too much

the next extremely hard achievement they will add to crypt of the necrodancer is to get every other achievement deathless without breaks. Pain.

Silent hill 4, Nursery Rhymes achievement was also bugged on 360. Sometimes it just would not ding despite collecting all the drawings. Been there, done that.

Are "trophies" part of some console version? Cause the game is available on Steam and there are probably a lot more people who fully completed the game, I don't see how "19 People" is the accurate number of all people who completed the game

One of the main things is game devs are too scared to take risks, for example, adding a tutorial, in fear that players will be stuck or confused in the game, get fraustrated, give a bad review and quit or maybe even refund the game.

The older ones had a greater sense of claustrophobia and urgency when you ran out of ammo and healing items

The reason there’s a difference between the trophy rarity on PSN vs PSNProfiles is cause PSNProfiles only tally’s people who have linked their PlayStation accounts with the website, whereas PSN tally’s all of its users who have played the game.

I have most of these. Except for KH 0.2 rarest. Those a achievements were made unnecessarily hard for no reason.

I hate games that have achievements that are "Don't use ANY fun mechanics" That is probably why the achievement level is so low, I am not putting my balls in a vice and turning it till something gives just for some one and zeros.

The nice thing about this game is that it's fun to play even if you never get the trophy. It's like chess. It doesn't get old.
