most unclear obscure teaching video ever.
Thank you for a GREAT video....I be old, getting back into "traditional archery" again. frustrated trying to remember my gap system....added a 2 pin sight....I'm back in the saddle again..
Thank you for showing this im about to go squirrel hunting for the first time in my life ive hunted deer in the past but never small game so i appreciate you teaching us
How did you kill him?
Thank you, i was born in a city, i moved to the mountains. Over the past few years i have been learning to live off the land. I havent ate squirrel yet, but i will this year. I do have a few elk under my belt, and i have learned how to process and preserve them. My new goal is how to use the hide. I thought id start with something small. Do you have any videos on how to do the hide?
That’s brutal I don’t like animal abuse
Cool!
I find it really strange that the term "traditional" is used for bows made from space age materials. And for some reason the type of bows i would consider "traditional" are called primitive bows, even though they span across thousands of years, from primitive times up until the present.
Having just watched your much more recent video on squirrel hunting with a smoothbore flintlock pistol, I wanted more and found this one, which I think is even better! Now a subscriber, I selfishly hope that you can find the time to make and post even more videos. Yours are EXCELLENT, and definitely among the best on UA-cam, which is saying a lot. Best, Chris (in Maine)
I have deer-hunted and shot targets with recurves and single-pin sights since I was introduced to archery at summer camp six decades ago. (As several commenters have pointed out, the practice was common back then.) Eliot, this video is-in my opinion-the best UA-cam has to offer on the subject, by far. I re-watch it every time I'm tempted to "start over" and learn the instinctive method. At 74, I'd rather spend time honing my form and hunting whitetails that the sight gives me a great chance to make a lethal shot on. By the way, Florida dad's Fred Bear quote on bow sights (below) is absolutely priceless.
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I have thought about the possibility of using a single pin bow sight on a canted bow. Right now I am laid up so I can't test that idea. Also, since we are straying from pure traditional there was a release that, unlike most where the trigger is pressed to release, this one is released much like releasing a string with one's fingers, but more precise. Gotta try that too. 😉
I have played with a modern finger release on a recurve, it’s certainly works! I’ve seen the old school primitive releases but haven’t tried one yet
Not so much the truth but more of an opinion on bow sights. It's not invalid to use sights unless you personally feel it is invalid. I don't think of Olympic style archery as invalid, but it is a different thing and I don't personally enjoy it... But comparing the use of fibre reinforced materials for limbs is not convincing to me. There was a historic equivalent, horn. Horn is light, strong and highly flexible. It was used in bow making, but it is a considerably harder material to work with, less uniform and crucially the major difference is the price. It's just a modern version of horn, that gives a price tag of up to around 20x more than fibre for a similarly well made bow. It doesn't break from tradition in performance, only in cost and availability. 1930's is also what I would call modern, I know that's different in the US because anything over 50 years old seems ancient to them. I do think at least some archers used a sight of kinds though. In the same way that ELB archers often use a rubber band to give a guide for distance and the arrow itself as a guide left and right. I think it's unimaginable that no hunters and target shooters did the same with string or marks. You should shoot the way you want to shoot, and that's really all there is to it. If you don't mind relying on a higher level of skill for accuracy, true barebow is great. If you are hunting and shot placement becomes more important then great, use sights and if Olympic is your thing then do that. It's a free choice like hairstyles, there is no wrong answer... But fibre reinforced materials for bows are essentially just faux horn and not really very modern when you think about them as such.
Great video
Thanks!
Could anyone give me a link to buy a longbow with sights already attached or predrilled? seems like every bow i see on the internet is designed not to be drilled into but I just want a traditional bow with a single pin sight.
I made one using an old fiber optic pin and glued it to a piece of leather. Then taped it to my bow using precautions to protect the finish. I moved it around to sight it in then taped it permanently. Works great!
The sight is an original that came with the bow. 3rivers archery sells a tape on/screw on sight that’s similar. You could also check eBay for vintage sights. Good luck!
I need this for my fur I plan on making
Years ago I stopped small game hunting with larger bore shotguns using a 28 ga. Or 410 bore for the hunt . Stopped using modern guns for deer and other large game using a 54 cal black powder and I was wanting a small bore double black powder shotgun. But my spine gave out from bad drs cutting it enough to ruin me.
I'm looking into getting into Archery and hunting with a bow. I'm looking into maybe equipping a sight to help with accuracy. I think your arguement for sights being traditional is a weak one, forgive me for saying. Tradition means spanning thruout the ages and going all the way back thousands of years. Just because you have a magazine from your grand papi's time that has sights in it doesn't prove they are part of the ancient tradition. It's still contemporary. The real tradition would be to make your own bow and arrows tbh, but everyone is at different levels, and might not have the know how or confidence to do that. Good video 👍
Very nice video. What’s the name of the sight?? Where can i find it? Ty
I got my first squirrel yesterday and it’s been in the negatives overnight and it froze in its trap. What would you recommend doing in order to keep the hide thou it’s frozen and stiff?
Thank you it’s the best detailed video I watched after with zero waste! Thank you again!
Glad it was helpful! I appreciate it!
Very informative Great video. Thankyou
Glad it was helpful!
Trad bows don’t use sights. I don’t know what voodoo you are using on that bow, but those sights don’t belong on that bow. If you cannot shoot a Trad bow without a sight then stop shooting Trad and pick up a compound.
LOL Your crazy I can shoot my bow, instictively at 30 yards hit bullseye of 3 ", sight are Bull_ hit
I’m using rubber bands wrapped around my riser. Seem to work pretty well. For me at least
No damage to the meat
what sight is that though because it looks soooo nice
The sight is an original that came with the bow. 3rivers archery sells a tape on/screw on sight that’s similar. You could also check eBay for vintage sights. Good luck!
Can I ask where you got your sight? I’m looking to get into the sport and think this would be helpful.
I've been scouring the net trying to find a sight like that. Most recurve sights resemble a fancy shiny out of place T-Square device. But the one in this video .. much simpler. Tag me if you find out please.

I used to shoot archery in the late 70s and sights on recurves where fairly common. I had one on mine. At the time bow technology was improving by leaps and bounds and everyone wanted to use the latest greatest. Compounds took the field by storm in just a few years and by the mid 80s most people including myself had switched over with no regrets. We had a few people in our club who stuck with the old ways and shot a beautiful one piece recurve instinctive. They kept telling me to stop relying on technology and just shoot but I was doing so good with sights and a release I never went back until this year. Sights on a recurve are a good way to learn archery without losing all your arrows. Ha!
Great video bro!! Wish i had found it sooner!
Thank you, excellent presentation.
I tried this for the first time today and I think I fucked it up
I learned how to skin a squirrel, and rabbits as a kid from my Grandpa, my grandpa's technique is way better and takes half the time.
6 year old video and still the best skinning of a squirrel from all the others I’ve seen
I appreciate it 👍🏻
I do appreciate the soft music. This stuff actually turns my stomach and my heart; but it is a valuable survival skill that I am forcing myself to learn. Thank you so much for treating the situation with the care and gratitude toward the animals and the viewers.
Thank you for the kind words 👍🏻
Also have a bucket of water
Time for the steww
do you have a video how to mount a fibre sight to a wooden recurve
the screws it came with are machine screws so im assuming a female fitting of some sort needs holes drilled ?
Great video. Thanks.
I have watched your (this) video about 10 times and I still like the end. I bought a .36 caliber TC Seneca in 1976 for my 16th birthday (you could back then) and I still have it. I build my own flintlocks now and as you said… nothing beats hunting with a flintlock. Being from Wyoming I have taken everything from prairie dogs to elk with my muzzleloaders… life is good brother.
Dude your video was interesting, well produced and very informative. Im a self taught hunter and I love squirell hunting, thank you!
Your welcome!
Why don't you put a peep site in the string. You don't shoot a compound bow with the front site and not a peep.
Iv just see your video. I think it came up because I'd seen a guy make a slingshot pouch from a squirrel hide. I'm not into hunting but its handy to know how things are done. This is a awsome video you were so clean and respectful of the game. And very surgical with your knife cuts. Like I say I'm not into hunting but I'm subscribing to your Chanel because you are clear on instructions and just a likable guy👍 are you still butting video's out?
Great demo, thanks. So many channels will talk your ears off about bows, but not show them in action. So I appreciate your presentation, and very impressed with these bamboo bows. Subscribed for more. Best wishes.
I would like to know where you got that sight.
The sight is an original that came with the bow. 3rivers archery sells a tape on/screw on sight that’s similar. You could also check eBay for vintage sights.
They’ve been around FOREVER. Get over it.
what arrows do you use?
There’s no debate, you shoot your bow how you want to shoot your bow. Everybody else can do what they want.
thankyou
Any idea where I could buy a sight like the you are using in the video?
Please give me this bow
