Welcome to the Road To Off Grid! 🌿
We're Pete and Hayley, a husband and wife duo from the south of the UK, on our exciting journey towards self-sufficiency and off-grid living. With a dream to live sustainably and independently, we’re starting from scratch and documenting every step of our adventure.
We are currently tackling our first big project: converting a 7.5 tonne Mercedes 814 truck into a cosy tiny home. This mobile haven will serve as our temporary residence while we work on our ultimate goal - establishing a successful business on our own piece of land and inviting people to join us in creating a thriving off-grid community.
Follow our story and be inspired to pursue your own dreams of sustainability and independence. Let's embark on this journey together, learning, growing, and building a better future, one step at a time. 🌱🔧

Yay asbestos removal costs
You get planning permission granted, by telling the council on their refusal of your application, that you’re going to sell it to gypsies
Forget that land. A massive cemetery on your next door... Well, don't be surprise if on every night someone will be visiting you that you'll never forget on the rest of your life. And lucky enough of the day comes out in the morning and your still alive. Get out in there guys!!!
Don't worry, we weren't keen either 😂
I live across the street from a cemetery. I've never noticed unwanted guests. In fact, walking around the cemetery at night is very peaceful
Most people i know who desire to live off grid cannot afford to live off grid, the irony is not very amusing..
Nice. I built my daughter a 190 square foot tiny house. I towed it on a cheap block I brought . Always make sure the council is happy first . Good luck.
Very cool! Thanks 🙂
how does someone access the engine if it needs service or breakdown that means the entire box has to be moved
Young Lady you look very tired are you keeping OK don't want you to get sick as there's a lot of flu about please look after yourself regards pat and family
Put a low-ball offer in and see what happens..🤷🏼♂️
I am also looking for you, many feelers out in the area too. Fingers crossed
@@pjprobertson Thank you 🙏 🤞
What time is today’s upload going up at guys?
The flip down shelf and yea making area is the best part of this.
a very wise man once told me to invest in land , his reasoning was that " they dont make it anymore" even if you only use it for a while building the truck and never get building permission it will only go up in value as its very quickly becoming hard to find.
How will you tip the cab for service?
Posted this comment too soon. Never mind.
see if you can buy some scaffolding cheap, it will be a lot stronger than the marquee
Come to Ireland we have all the off grid land you want Sheds houses etc good luck and Happy Christmas 🎄
That would be really cool! There’s some grants you can get too. Thank you. Happy Christmas 🎄
I pray that you guys have a wonderful and joyful Christmas it all goes well for you in the new year
🙏
You thought about getting scaffolding ?
Yeah we actually got a quote to hire some for 6 months when we started. £7000 plus vat!! I expect we could buy the parts used and sell them on later? Worth a look into.
Un wanted interruption but cause big delay of planned progress. What man wishes some time goes into different from. Well this is very truth of life we know if we are positive all odds can be changed be positive and god will show the correct way. Be happy safe and blessed.❤❤😊
Surely someone can help these lovely people with a loan of a barn. Hope you get something more suitable soon
So sweet thank you! 🤞🤞🤞
You need to make collard ties for your metal braces there and that wouldn't have happened but you are so positive you're going to keep going no matter what I can tell
I’ll add it to my to do list for after Christmas 😅😁
Be really careful with a plot that’s been purchased and then split into smaller plots. It tends to upset the local planners and they then remove any permitted development right’s you have, it means you cannot even put up a fence to define your boundary.
Yeah I can see how it could turn into a right pain!
When looking for land be cautious of any existing buildings with corrugated cement boards, these are likely to contain asbestos and while not overly dangerous unless disturbed would limit what you can do in those structures and add costs if/when you needed to dispose of as would be considered hazardous waste and need to be disposed of correctly.
Yeah that aged looked like my grandads from when I was a kid. I know someone in the asbestos trade luckily so I’ll have someone to help!
Definitely worth trying to rent a unit - as someone who's worked on many vehicle projects, you'll soon lose the energy and interest when it's outside, freezing and progress becomes slow and any work you do becomes undone in the elements. Failing that, look at MoD auctions and try and get a portable hangar, they're not stupidly expensive and are built to withstand the weather. Check estate gazette and rightmove daily for new units, one will come up!
Yeah it get very hard. Good clothes definitely help. Ex mod hanger would be very cool! I don’t think we have a suitable plot for one though but I’ll definitely check out some mod auctions 👍
Before you put any weight on the roof, tie the rafters together across the bottom of the triangle they form at their base. You can use straps. This will add a lot of strength. To be honest, you’re better off using the remains of your big sheet than heavy OSB. By the time you’ve secured the boards to the roof they’ll have exactly the same capacity for catching the wind as the sheet would, but will be putting a lot more weight on the frame. The white sheet will be much nicer to work under than the OSB too. Much lighter and brighter. Triangulate as much as you can. The structure needs to either let wind pass through, so no walls, or it needs to block the wind completely, so four walls and a roof. I don’t think you need to distract yourself with land, unless a plot comes along with access and hard standing already done. Both the places you looked at need months of work in themselves before you’re back working on the lorry, and wherever else you go you need to be able to move the lorry there, so regardless you need to work on it where it is.
Lots of good tips here thanks. I think we’re not going to put osb on the roof and instead have an easily removable tarpaulin with heavy straps for when it rains.
Hi here in South Arica we call that a BOER MAAK N PLAN
Ask farms. Some are willing to rent out empty barns, especially these days with them needing to diversify to actually be able to feed their families.... I really feel bad for them.
I could probably use google maps to look around and find some. Yeah me too they’re having a tough time atm!
Loving scrapheap challenge part 2 keep up the positive vibes 👍❤️👍❤️👍 Ps happy Christmas too you both hope you have an amazing time and good luck for the new year
Thank you! You too! 👍
Shame you weren’t closer to the fens, I’m sure Trucker Tim would let you use his workshop (and also the help from Bengineer)
Wee tip, move the straps nearer to a corner, less chance of bending your frame.
We will do 😁
You never know, sometimes setbacks are what actually propel you forward. You two are so strong and resilient, it’s a pleasure to watch how you problem solve. Merry Christmas and I hope you can enjoy a little break 🎄
YEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Hi from Australia I hope the tea station survived the storm. 😊
Cross bracing is ok but x bracing much more stable 😊😊😊😊
Thanks for the tip
What about power, drainage and water? Two shipping containers and a container shelter between the two. Secure, sturdy and definitely future rentable to others wanting to follow you. There's definitely a need for shelters for boat, caravan, truck, motorhome repairs. Sound investments.
Great idea. Diesel creek started like this. The containers provide shelter and lockable storage.
Yeah I’d like to do that design. We’d need to find somewhere else to do that I think.
Put the center diagonal the other way
Don't forget the tea box
Of course!
Don’t underestimate the costs and time involved in clearing trees (including root systems) putting in drainage, then waiting for the land to drain and dry. You could buy a ready built bespoke camper for the money you would invest in a land project including planning, building, services and taxes.
Yeah that’s ultimately why we didn’t go for any of that land. It was just interesting to look as it wasn’t too expensive. But I guess we know why now!
Check ''garaże blaszane'' in Poland, in here it's the cheepest way to have your own garage. Good luck and Merry Christmas!
I'll check it out! Thanks ☺️
What a team you are! We all know you’ll get to where you want to go. Really enjoyed this week’s episode 😊 happy christmas to both of you!
Thank you so much! Happy Christmas to you too.
an amazing vlog guys so happy to see you get back from storm darragh and that moose is going to be in a new safe home for the coming year the first 3 months are meant to be a very harsh time in 2025 i want to wish you all a very wonderful Christmas.
Thank you so much 😁. You too! 🎄
Hi is there anything on anything on any of the gov land,army/navy/raf there are lots of hangers that they have split up and rented out,no idea how to contact them, when i was working in the uk had lots of small biz on them.
That’s a great idea thanks I’ll look into that!
Well done guys keep smiling and hopefully something will come up.
Thank you ☺️
The ones left with trees check to see if you are allowed to cut any down 👍
I would be buying and mounting a body on that then your time could be spent inside in bad weather and outside in good weather
Not really what we had in mind as we want to build our own. We have quite a specific design in mind. But a good idea nonetheless
You only need the accommodation for a year to do the truck. Buying land could take 6 months even if you find the right place where all you kit won't be stolen during the first month so stop wasting your time on that idea. Get your arses into gear, rent a short term workshop and then crack on with the build. Faffing about with yet another home-made temporary structure in a weather prone boatyard when you've already wasted a grand or two on the first pile of crap you built is yet another distraction. I make no apology for being so harsh in my criticism. You two are both faffers - get a grip, focus on the truck build and get it done.
If I could find a workshop near us I would! At the moment we have two choices, do nothing while we look for somewhere or do something so we can work on the truck while we look around.
Buying on alibaba entails shipping costs, export fees and vat and import duty in the U.K. costs can double what you start with.
Yeah all in all it would be around £5k after import. Not bad but the wait is ages and it might not even be suitable for where we are
wow, RESPECT for your work- and not-giving-up attitude, you youngster sure learn me a lesson or two .😉
Haha thanks! I doubt we’d be so enthusiastic with out you all watching!
Tip: If you connect the braces they can give forces through each other. Now they are all separate. It could be more efficient.
Thanks for the tip!
Nice recuperation after the disaster! Congrats on the creative solution. Fingers crossed you find something a bit more to your liking so you can continue doing the work under cover.
