Hi I don’t have much to offer But what I have to offer is That What amazing couple amazing I love how you both can work together And I know you are going to do amazing job on this project 🇮🇪☘️
Another great episode. The chassis would look cool in orange! I bought a 814 a few weeks before you started on here and your passion for it has made me decide to keep it! Keep it up both
Trucks with red chassis is red oxide.for the sandblaster plumb into the air drain bottom of the truck tanks leave truck ticking over much more air than a small compressor.😁
Great video. I like your style and I am sure you will lots of subscribers. Just remember that it's not a sprint it's a marathon so don't go burning yourself out. The tea station was a good idea .jobs that are really hard becomes really easy after a break and a cuppa. Fine skills
When you are pouring out of a 5 litre container (rust converter), especially if it is full, don't pour with the spout at the lowest point as it causes airlocks and splashes. Turn the container on it's side, you will find it pours small quantities more successfully.
Got to get priorities right. Also, I'm sure it's something to do with health and safety at work...us British are bloody useless until we've had a cuppa so operating powered tools becomes unsafe 😂
Great work and two folk using angle grinders with confidence and fabricating stuff out of steel. The latch for the tea station. U can bend the drop down bit a little to make it work. I can fabricate large axel stands or chassis stands out of 50mm box section rather than buying stuff all the time.
When you mount a hasp and staple, do it so the hinged part covers the screw heads - otherwise it can just be unscrewed and removed. Use one of your many tools to bend the hasp to the angle you need.
I took the hasp not fitting as a sign that this was more faff than it’s worth. The ply is so thin that you could pull the door open with your bare hands if you really wanted to get in there, padlocked or not ☹️
Really enjoying watching you going through all the steps. It looks very hard going. Big resepct to you both for doing it. You're making me want to give it a go, too, but I don't have the money to do it.
Nice work with the patch and keeping up the momentum of working on the truck, I’m sure the snacks at hand help with that. A blue/grey paint would work well on the chassis, it would give some visual contrast.
Using a small marquee will mean you can also work longer in the day. Top Tip : when you get nearer the cab cover the glass up (cardboard & masking tape or welding blanket) so no grinding or welding sparks hit the glass as they will stick into the glass as ruin it, you'll end up with rusty mess and have to replace the glass, that goes for all the other glass as well Cheers
I have to admire your determination to get this involved, getting the preparation work done to this level. This truck will last years. Nice welding and good template, worth the effort removing from the main chassis. I've done some welding myself on thin metal for repairs on my van, laying underneath in very awkward positions and I wouldn't want anyone to see the welds, but it got through the MOT. I think you have done a better job. Nice tea station, only thing you need is a ground coffee and a French press. 🙂
Thank you so much for the kind words 😁 I can image that wasn’t a fun experience! I generally don’t like working on cars but the truck is ok for now while everything is out in the open 👍 welding on the. Thick stuff is so much easier too, I’m sure yours was great!

Rust, the nemesis of steel. Once its there, it will always be there. You guys are doing a great job slowing the rust down but it will never go away. The frame is what it is, but all those smaller pieces you could try something else on, citric acid. I have used it on old carparts with greate results, the steel will of course not magicly reapear so there will be alot off pitting, but it do get in to any spot. I get citric acid in my local store in 1500 gram yars. Mix it with water, the more souer the better. Then grind the lose rust of the part and put it in and a lid on the water container. Let it soak for a few days. It will turn black so clean it, if there is still rust on there, try removing it or soak it a littel longer. When the rust is no more, dry it and paint it, it will flash rust quickly if it is humid. And i recomend a 2K epoxy primer on everything first, then maybe paint it green.
Rust happens when steel meets air (iron oxide). It's not like an infection that keeps on growing secretly under the surface. If it's ground away or converted, and the remaining rust-free steel is properly primed and painted, it's sealed from oxidisation. Then you just have to repair any stone chips, clean off salt water deposits etc to preserve the seal.
@@tobysherring1369 its a bit more complicated than that if we get in to the cemystry of rust. In dry indoor air, iron does not rust, but if the relative humidity is above about 60%, iron rusts spontaneously without being wet. Outdoors, iron is exposed to sulfur dioxide which attacks iron and forms iron(II) sulphate which acts as an anode for further oxidation. The chemical difference between red rust and grave rust is that in one case it is divalent iron (ferrous, FeO) and trivalent iron (ferric, Fe2O3) respectively. The presence of water gives rise to hydroxides, FeO2H, which is thus a constituent in varying amounts in the general "substance" rust. Therefore, it is a bad idea to use products and primers that contain any form of water on raw steel. And the small window of time between cleaning and applying primer is enough if the humidity is high enough outside for the rust process to restart and you paint right over it and after a few years, the paint bubbels up by rust from underneath. By trail and error and 30 years or restoring all kind of things this knowledg has been accumilated. The only way to get all rust off is to disasembel everything, sandblast the frame and dry it in a heated room before, between and after painting to get all the moisture out.
hello, the padlock hinge you could bend it to the angle that you need. that will keep your bic's safe. when it come's time to put the new brackets on put some grease between the frame and brackets it will help slow down the rust coming back
Keep it up guys. My 1996 Mercedes Truck (same as yours but 13 tonne 4x4) was way rustier and you'll get sick of it but keep your eyes on the goal. I'm nearly ready for the living box after 5 years of work rebuilding the whole truck after stripping it to a bare chassis.
Great job on the welds Pete they looked brilliant especially for your 5th weld. Hayley once you get used to the feel of the battery grinder and more comfortable with using rotary power tools in general the electric ones will possibly not bother you so much. Either way great progress on the truck and with both of your own personal skill development, this will be an incredible truck when you are finished with it

Hi Hayley love the tea stand and biscuits very nice , and your new fly me to the moon suite looks very sexy on you 🥴🥴. One thing guy’s when welding new metal on always make sure you have the same gauge metal for the replacement piece. When painting your new repaired chassis always use a anti rust paint to stop any more rust coming throughout . Please do not shanfer the edges of your new metal this only weakens the the edges round your welds. It’s looking great so keep up the good work guys Jon🇦🇺
Don't bother with a cat C1 license, just go for Cat C class 2. It's the same test and in the long run a lot more useful. I wish you all the best and will be following. Good luck with the Benz.
Turn the hasp and staple up the other way.. hinge it on the joint.. and padlock on the door or you may be able to bend the plate to latch 👍🏻 on the tea station 😜plus I’d love to know what welder you have.. looks nice and compact 👍🏻

It’s a good entry level welder, 4 or 5mm steel is about its limit and there isn’t much control over the power settings but it’s served us well so far!
@@RoadToOffGrid thanks for the response, you guys are doing an amazing job with the work and the vids too.. I know how much work goes into making a UA-cam video and their quality vids 👍🏻
hi guys such a good vlog this week have you guys made a amazon wish list where we can buy you things you may need and the rust converter i dunno how it works but it is amazing stuff and i love the tea station that is a must for any work you two are such an inspiration to me and i love your vibe so honnest
Hi Kenneth! Thanks for tuning in 🙏 That's so lovely to hear, thank you. I don't think we could live without the tea station now - home comforts are so important for morale. We'd not thought about making a wishlist before, it's a lovely idea... so we've started one here: www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/1GYOJOEUOZV20?ref_=wl_share 💚
Make sure that you can still tilt the cab once you've attached your living accommodation pod . The cab would need to be tilted to reveal the engine for access for servicing
For sure, if you check out episode 8 where I explain all about it. Basically the habitat is demountable so it can jack itself up to allow the cab to tilt.
I drove a 1988 f reg 814 as a skip truck from new , I found in the first week I felt a bit sea sick due to the leaf spring on the back of the cab but I soon got use to it 😂😂
Hi, with the seasonal change you might want to think about getting a smaller marque, yes another one, that's just big enough for you to work down the chassis and being smaller you could put some temporary lighting up that will give you more and better light in a smaller area and also being a smaller area you could use a gas space heater to keep you warm, but more importantly help the drying process if any prep. rust converter and painting. Hope this is of help to you both Cheers rich1899
Interesting idea, maybe a gazebo or something? I think we might be done with putting up tents but if we struggle paint not drying we’ll have a look into it. 👍👍😁
Get a mobile HGV fitter to come and inspect / mot prep your truck before you start building the body onto it! It will make it a lot more easier for them to inspect it and repair it if needs be. Would be annoying if you had to cut a hole in your floor to change something! Project is slowly getting there, Ive been watching from near enough the beginning. For sandblasters, you need an absolute ton of air. Most people have big diesel compressors to do it with.
Would machinery paint be suitable for chassis? Often yellow (as per JCB etc) or red but I can see why you wouldn't want red. Or silver cold galvanising paint? Will you waxoyl the cavities?
It would be really nice you could give some background as to who you guys are, what's your trades, i see you're already good at welding for only a 5th time and know your way around to some degree, have you had experience with this or building before? Great videos, look forward to each one 🙂
Hey! Maybe we’ll compile some common questions about us and answer them in a few videos or something. But we don’t have any proper experience in this sort of thing, we have build a camper van but it was much smaller. I’ve had a welding lesson to get me started which really helps. And we’re not quite creative and have engineering problem solving types of minds. Hope that helps! 😁
Hi guys great job, I love watching you. I’ve just bought a similar truck and am based in Devon/dorset. Will be starting the reno in January because currently on assignment in Sierra Leone. Anyway I had a question, what type/brand of welder did you buy and do you recommend it? Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much. Best of luck with yours! I bought a cheap one Off of eBay called Hitbox. I think it was around £150. I would recommend it for a beginner cheap welder. It can go up to about 4mm.
"Paint it red so you can't see the rust" Just put duct tape on the rust. MOT testers aren't allowed to remove anything. If they can't see the rust, it can't be there right ;)
RAL2003 is a great colour ... Both rust and oil should show up on it! Yellow is an alternative if my first suggestion was to garish! Or let Hayley pick - I've never seen a truck with a pink chassis! Great to watch you work - you explain things so clearly. And Pete's welding is great too!
Good night Hayley and Peter i love watching your you tube videos on your you tube channel I hope that you are all well and nice seeing Hayley being hot drinks maid whilst you do the chassis rust which one is the best hot drinks maker please keep up your good work on your you tube channel and please keep safe and warm
Rust converter only works on rust. If you paint it onto bare metal or painted metal, you are wasting it. Edit! You seem to have learned the hard way and yes, you are being far too pernickety! Don't often get to use that word! Unless you get someone in with professional blasting equipment you will never get rid of all the rust. Just do the best you can and paint it and it will outlive you both!
I think you summed it up nicely! We’ve got loads of it and from what I understand it doesn’t do any harm painting it on fresh metal and will still provide a good base for the primer. We’ll find out tomorrow if it’s dried 😅🤞🤞
Be careful using those brush wheels with no full face protection using those safety glasses is not good enough googles would be better safety glasses are not for grinding machines i have worked in a industry where that type of equipment is used all the time as the safety guys will tell you you only get two eyes there is not any replacements available
So painful to watch you are giving yourself too much work and the chassis doesn't need and never will look new again so do yourself a favour get most of the loose stuff of then give a prime and paint there is absolutely no need to use curarust as the steel your using it on its enough to prime this curerust stuff is usually meant for thinner car metals
See the problem is you used a rust "Converter" when you should have used a rust "Dissolver" Edit: A Rust Converter chemically changes the Iron Oxide (Rust) so its still there just "shouldn't" get worse once painted where a Rust Dissolver... dissolves rust
@RoadToOffGrid what actually happens is the "Dissolver" reacts to the iron creating Hydrogen foam which causes the rust to fall off the good metal... it does react with good metal as well but all it does is cause discoloration and it only does that sometimes. Iron oxide Is brittle (relatively) it isn't strong like pure iron or steel
This is they sort of system needed to sand blast youtube.com/@mobileblaster?si=AyT1gn1iZ445u-SS It’s coming along and a tea cabinet which looks great 👍🏻
Great to see a couple of young un's getting stuck in to some hard graft. Hats off to you both.

Hope this is of help to you both
Cheers rich1899
Interesting idea, maybe a gazebo or something? I think we might be done with putting up tents but if we struggle paint not drying we’ll have a look into it. 👍👍😁
What about ice blasting? No crap flying and do a great job
I’ve never even heard of that. Where were you in last weeks comments 😂😂 thanks though.
You tried a laser rust remover, perhaps a sponsor will come forward
Never even heard of it! Sounds very cool and I’m sure there’s a lot more rust to sort out so who knows… 🤞
Aqua blasting the steel does not produce dust around the site. It leaves a slurry of grit to be swept up.
its the upper class English accent . it is very entertaining . proper English !
😂😂😂
Get a mobile HGV fitter to come and inspect / mot prep your truck before you start building the body onto it! It will make it a lot more easier for them to inspect it and repair it if needs be. Would be annoying if you had to cut a hole in your floor to change something! Project is slowly getting there, Ive been watching from near enough the beginning.
For sandblasters, you need an absolute ton of air. Most people have big diesel compressors to do it with.
Yeah that’s a great idea. We will have a look for one 😁
Maybe silver or grey for the chassis
Could you not do some sort of ice or co2 blasting or soda crystals or something that evaporates or is easy to clean up
Possibly. Bit late now though 😅 I didn’t know that existed!
Would machinery paint be suitable for chassis? Often yellow (as per JCB etc) or red but I can see why you wouldn't want red. Or silver cold galvanising paint? Will you waxoyl the cavities?
That could look cool!
Yea we are going to wax the chassis after 😁
Look at high zinc primer.
Will do!
Is cab staying same colour if so paint the same as cab look good the same .
It sure yet.. big decision!
Get Hayley a dremel to do the holes
Yes! We have one somewhere, I’ll have to dig it out
❤❤❤❤ parabéns Deus abençoe vai dar tudo certo 🙏🙌
Thank you 🙏
Hello, have you already tried RX5 and RX 10 anti-rust. A very good product. Greetings from Belgium. Andy👍👍🍻🍻😉😉
No not seen those before. We’re planning on priming painting and protecting the chassis after so I’ll look into those thanks
👍
Hire dry ice blaster 😊
Suggest grey chassis best regards Nuno Portugal
Battleship grey 😁
Hey guy's.
Hello! 👋
Blue is another colour you could paint it.
Blue would look cool
"Paint it red so you can't see the rust" Just put duct tape on the rust. MOT testers aren't allowed to remove anything. If they can't see the rust, it can't be there right ;)
😂😂😂
RAL2003 is a great colour ... Both rust and oil should show up on it! Yellow is an alternative if my first suggestion was to garish!
Or let Hayley pick - I've never seen a truck with a pink chassis!
Great to watch you work - you explain things so clearly. And Pete's welding is great too!
😂😂 I don’t think Hayley would go for pink but I’ll ask
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video 😁
Got one for parts if you want it
That might be really useful thanks. Send us a message on Facebook or Instagram 👍
Good night Hayley and Peter i love watching your you tube videos on your you tube channel
I hope that you are all well and nice seeing Hayley being hot drinks maid whilst you do the
chassis rust which one is the best hot drinks maker please keep up your good work on your
you tube channel and please keep safe and warm
Thanks for tuning in! Hayley is the best hot drinks maker 😌 She also drinks the most tea 🫖 See you next week! 💚
Bizzare

All that grinding is soul destroying.....i spent many an hour doing that on multiple vehicles
It’s very slow going… we have to just break it up with other mini tasks to keep morale up!
Full face shields don’t fit masks under very well that’s the only issue 🤔 need to keep looking for solutions
why do you feel the need to edit your videos with crap music, , i think its better without music.
I suppose that’s the tricky thing about music, it’s subjective.
See the problem is you used a rust "Converter" when you should have used a rust "Dissolver"
Edit: A Rust Converter chemically changes the Iron Oxide (Rust) so its still there just "shouldn't" get worse once painted where a Rust Dissolver... dissolves rust
Interesting what happens when the rust has been dissolved?
@RoadToOffGrid what actually happens is the "Dissolver" reacts to the iron creating Hydrogen foam which causes the rust to fall off the good metal... it does react with good metal as well but all it does is cause discoloration and it only does that sometimes. Iron oxide Is brittle (relatively) it isn't strong like pure iron or steel
Very interesting! I’ll check that out at a later date. I’m sure we’ve got some more rust to deal with 😂
This is they sort of system needed to sand blast
youtube.com/@mobileblaster?si=AyT1gn1iZ445u-SS
It’s coming along and a tea cabinet which looks great 👍🏻
Thank you! I wish we could have sand blasted but its not possible where we are.
youtube.com/@mobileblaster?si=Pz1sMGLN2oYM-xQw that chassis would be done in a hour.
unfortunately we cant blast where we are.
Edd China uses Evaporust. Or Contact Micky Blackley Sandblasting (Both UA-camrs).
