We Fight The Dark
United States
Приєднався 6 січ 2015
Hey guys, Joe here! Since 2015 my goal has been to share my love of nature and the gear we use to enjoy it. As we near my 10 year anniversary on the platform I have decided to go a different route. There are too many influencers trying to sell you junk you don't need, the "What" of EDC and preparedness. I want to talk more about the "Why" and "How" as well as expand on what preparedness means. It's beyond just stuff, it also requires you to prepare your mind and body.
Our new (temporary?) slogan is "Per Flamma Virtutis" which roughly means "By The Flame Of Virtue/Courage". Every day the world seems to get a little dark with extremism and moral decay at all time highs. We can fight back against it, together, through upholding the values we hold dear.
The perceptions, opinions, beliefs and attitudes expressed here are mine alone and do not represent the policies, standards, opinions or practices of my employer, its staff, clients, affiliated companies, contractors, or vendors.

Winter Survival Tips: Three Forms Of Heat Loss
Winter outdoorsmanship can be an amazing experience but it is also one of the most dangerous times to be out in nature. Exposure is one of biggest causes of outdoors related fatalities next to dehydration and falls with cold exposure killing far more than heat exposure. To help prepare for this we must understand the three ways we lose body heat: radiative, conductive, and convective.

You Need An EDC Trauma Kit In 2025
Переглядів 1,9 тис.День тому
We didn't even make it more than just a few hours into 2025 before experiencing multiple mass casualty events throughout the world. I don't think trauma kits are a "nice to have" anymore. They're a need, at least for those in or around potential target areas like major cities and venues. Your trauma kit should aim to address GSWs, stab/slash wounds, burns, personal health emergencies (diabetic ...

The LBT 22L Day Pack (8007a) is a really pleasant upgrade over the 14L variant. You not only get more volume but also more features. I also think the amount of features and weight put it ahead of competing products like the GoRuck GR1 for EDC and One Bag Travel. The only problem I have with these LBT bags is that the 500D they use is a little rough making it a dust and lint magnet. I also wish ...

so let's say this is a counterfeit made in China where most likely the originals are made what is the problem. does the counterfeit not perform as well as the psuedo-original ?
@@DLN-ix6vf The originals like mine are made in Taiwan with a much higher level of QC and legitimate S35VN unlike counterfeits. Most importantly a counterfeit won't be warrantied by Cold Steel. So you're paying full retail price for a cheap knockoff rocking a mystery trash steel like 420J or poorly heat treated D2. It's more likely to have defects and if it does you're out of luck on a replacement. Not to mention selling them in the US is a Federal crime. If you're going to pay full retail, you better be getting the real thing. If you intentionally set out to buy a counterfeit from Temu or Alibaba for like $40 and don't resell it, nothing objectively wrong with that I just wouldn't.
Good stuff brother. Heat loss happens when temps are not below freezing and people do not always understand that. It can happen when it's fairly nice outside. Thanks for sharing and take care
@@AtwoodThreads And places like your neck of the woods throw people off too since it can go from insanely got and insanely cold after sunset. A lot don't associate deserts with hypothermia.
This is obviously a gross oversimplification to make it more digestible. We could easily do a 30-60 minute class just on heat loss and how to manage it but I don't want to put anyone to sleep.
Note: Our kits have been tested and are based in standard industry practice, current research, and a decade of personal experience. This includes consulting surgeons and providers. TCCC is not the gold standard of medical care stateside and you shouldn't confuse a 6-12 month paramedic certificate with being a trauma care expert. LARPing & Stabilizing ≠ Hospital Trauma Care.
At least the 3 bleed stopping essentials tourniquet, chest seals, hemo gauze which can fit in a tiny belt clip pouch.
Simple, compact, effective 🤌🏻
i hope this video gets 1 million+ views, everyone should see this
@@l3ftie578 Ha I wish ❤️ The algorithm doesn't like me and apparently some folks think it's weird and unreasonable to carry medical but not 5 pounds of tech accessories 🤣 C'est la vie. Thank you for stopping by and hopefully this was at least vaguely useful.
@ it was useful, I finally finished putting together my first aid kit for my EDC bag thanks to your guidance. Mine was sitting at home and as you said, it’s no good to us there. I ordered the spring loaded window breaker shown in the video, a CAT type tourniquet in rescue orange to stand out, a pretty heavy duty splint, and a couple Israeli style emergency bandages to add to my kit.
As much as I hate the RATS, I feel the only use it has is as a very young pediatric tq where traditional windlass tq won't fit, or as a backup to my backup. Good point with the petroleum gauze, most EMS agencies don't carry chest seals due to cost and negligible difference in efficacy. However I will say they definitely adhere much better than any tape, even with mastisol or benzoin applied. I don't know of any emergency departments in my area routinely using any sort of hemostatic agent, even higher level trauma centers. I personally omit them from my kits, I just don't see the use. All in all, this is a very well thought out kit. High props for putting thought into what you carry instead of buying high end shit for the hell of it. (Also, another nitpick: if you're wearing a mask out of concern for blood, you should have a face shield with it. I usually close my mouth when faced with blood spatter, but my safety squints only get me so far 😉)
Basically how I view the RATS is along those lines. I trust the anecdotal testing from their unofficial time in the Middle East for youth application. That said at least one new study showed CATs can be effective down to a 2" limb which is great. If I had the room I'd put in another SOF-T or CAT but I don't in this kit so my thought process is that it's better than no backup at all 🙂 A lot of folks have adopted the Snakestaff ETQ which could replace my RATS but I want to see more field data first.
Gosh this is a hard choice . I love BM. But my favorite steel is CPM-20CV and S90V. I know M4 is supposed to be the same, but when I go with a benchmade, I purchase a thicker sturdy blade so I can abuse it . Butttt the bailout feels so amazing in pocket and to fidget with. I would likely buy both then be too scared to use them because of the price 😂 But I hate that belly on the Mailibu. That Blade would sharpen in 50 seconds on a diamond stone.
@@Tyler-Woody That's how I am a lot of the time 🤣 I recently forced myself go sell off a lot of knives I wasn't using for that reason. My bailout had issues out of box but it's become main go to for ages now.
@@WeFightTheDarkthe more I think about it , I would have to go with Benchmade. I could fillet a fish pretty well with that blade.
the trauma instructor i had at our hospital preferred the rat tourniquet over the CAT. its all preference. as you said ,use whatever is going to be most comfortable for you. great vid Joe.
@@sirbungobeats Indeed! We are very fortunate to live in a time with so many viable options. New TQs are coming out regularly and many of the newer smaller ones show a lot of promise which rocks.
That's probably because more for application on a patient, just like the SWAT-T, it's a good TQ but self application is going to be hard in a high stress situation. I love the SWAT-T but really only carry them for pressuring dressings and for my kids. CAT or SOF-T for adults for sure. Plus... Something else to think about is someone else using the RAT on you. Might cost vital seconds.
Thanks for sharing my man. Is that the large size on the fanny?
@@AtwoodThreads Yes sir! The large MCB version is a pain in the backside to find but I have been strongly encouraging them (by being obnoxious 🤣) to do another run.
@@WeFightTheDark Right on LOL
@@WeFightTheDark maybe if this video pops off and more people come looking for it they will see that as sufficient demand
@@l3ftie578 I can only hope! They were willing to do a personal order in MCB for me when I asked about more of these so they may very well be willing to bring it back if enough people request it.
I bought one in 2017 and it's still going strong, nearly 8 years later. I've never re-waxed the canvas. Externally, they're very strong and durable. The weakness for me has proven to be the thinner internal pocket material, which may tear (presumably only under frequent heavy usage), and the strap buckles, which have stretched and come apart a few times (fixed with a few blows of a hammer). Also, the canvas attachment of the strap D-rings is gradually wearing away, so one day, perhaps in another 7 years, it will wear through, and the strap will come off. It seems likely to be repairable, though. I agree that brass strap hardware would be preferable. But I recommend NutSac products 100%.
@@Boababa-fn3mr Always love seeing long term users! I think people tend to stay away from waxed canvas because they believe they need to wax it seasonally but you definitely don't. I agree on the durability points. It's "near heirloom" for me but with TLC over the tears these should last a long time where as some generics fall apart after just a year or two. Really dig their company and looking to upgrade to the 15 soon :).
330.00$
Indeed, the prices have gone up a lot in the two years since I made this. That said it's also had an increase in quality and thus cost to manufacture. They are rocking MagnaCut steel now, a redesigned sheath, and hand polished blades. Plus inflation. Is that worth a $115 price increase over two years? IMHO no but he's one of the "hottest" makers in the world right now so that's also part of it. I have a $210 alternative I'll be making a video on soon, and that's 2024 pricing :)
Excellent, video, sir. I have a Patagonia Refugio 26 L pack that I love. But I couldn’t figure out how to add organization to the front stash pocket. Your video shows the way. Appreciate it.
@@jayjohnsonmeditations4996 I've been meaning to handle one of those! There are some slightly cheaper ones on Amazon but I just don't know what quality of aluminum they use and worry it'll bend. So far mine has been stellar whenever I've needed it
i love lbt. the only tactical manufacture that doesnt make cruddy and over priced packs. they do sales frequently as well.
@@SINBREAKER24 l recently got in the 30L pack as well for comparison. They make good stuff 🤌🏻
@@WeFightTheDark looking forward to the video!
Im all about retention but that is stupid dangerous...
@@captainmagpie1446 I love a nice click 🤌🏻 Just not when its a blade scraping bone 😂 You can tell who uses tools and who doesn't by whether they understand the issue here or not. Some think this is totally normal.
I was craving one of these as soon as they were released, but decided to stick with the canvas versions, as I suspect the leather would get trashed and be less durable. That said, the leather components of my canvas versions have aged well.
@@Boababa-fn3mr It's a hard one with this leather. It's a great type but it shows patina immediately versus over a decade which isn't for everyone. The leather they use for the accents on the canvas is very solid.
@WeFightTheDark Thanks for that additional information.
I just checked, and the insured international postage costs for this bag rule it out. It's just way too expensive to get it here, even with a discount code, about double the cost of shipping for the standard canvas versions. That's a pity.
good review, I love ESEE knives and have a dozen or so but I wont be buying this knife until a better sheath is produced.
@@captainmagpie1446 I wish they had patterned with Armatus like they did before. Thankfully he's now making sheaths for these but that's an extra 45-50 dollars I think?
@@WeFightTheDark cool, ESEE should partner with them, I've got two Armatus sheaths for my Baja 4.5 and Izula and they are by far the best aftermarket sheaths I own. The Pacaya is a nifty blade but I'll probably just stick with my Izula 2, it is probably one of my favorite ESEE designs.
5 seconds with a heat gun to fix but yeah you shouldn’t have to. I’d prefer that exact design made by Rowen in 1095 to replace my izula
@@esrvdb88 Rowen may not work with super steels but their 1095 is unrivaled IMHO and I would of gladly paid $100-150 if they had done it.
Wow, ESEE had better straighten this problem out very soon. It will affect their sales and great reputation.
I was told they pawned it off on Toor even though they didn't make the sheath but never heard any follow up. Months later they still haven't responded to me on any platform
Great video. Seeing as this is an antiquated law, do you think we would have any luck in overturning it in the future?
We could honestly over turn it here and now but I think it's one of those laws that's collected a lot of dust and nobody is willing to lead the charge. Both with the Federal shipping ban and states' outright bans. More and more states are legalizing them but it's been really slow as the knife industry has way less invested in lobbying than the firearms industry. I personally would argue it as a 2A issue and a disabilities issue if I was a lawyer but knives by default are seen as tools so it's harder to make a 2A case. Knives were one of the main defensive weapon of choice back when the Constitution was written. Less than 10% of Americans could afford to own and maintain firearms at the time. Their carry should be even more protected than firearms according to Bruens test of history and tradition. Autos also help folks that can't otherwise articulate folders.
would you rather pair this up with mcb, multicam, or ranger green?
I am always down to clown with MCB but if I was building a full LARP/Pewpew kit I'd probably mix it with ranger myself for where I am. That said multicam and mas looks incredibly awesome especially with MAS as a base under multicam rigs and belts.
@@WeFightTheDark ah okay, currently getting a mas grey jpc 2.0 done with some fabric i had, and of course had some trouble figuring out what camo to fill in the space where mas grey isnt avail. MCB looks crazy good to the eye as well as multicam. theres something about it so close to ranger green yet different that makes me not like it as much

That is the USA Made Blade sprint run of the Kershaw Knockout in M390 from about six years ago. Sadly near impossible to find, especially now that Kershaw discontinued the Knockout entirely this October apparently 🥲. Prices even on base models are nuts so one of these would probably be quite spendy. Mines mint since Assisted has been banned here since 2018 but if you keep tabs on my Instagram I may eventually be able to figure out a fair price for selling mine.
What kind of watch is that?!
That is the Citizen Eco-Drive Garrison with a cheap custom band 😁 It's no Omega or Ares but gets the job done and runs via solar.
Nice. Looks good!
can someone tell me if they have an Armitus sheath for the Esee 4hm and if so, how is it?
Waited to see if anyone replied since I haven't used the one for the 4HM but the one for my Izula II was great. Absolutely loved it.
I love my Bushman. The quality is next level and their customer service can't be beat. Currently, I have a Piranha and Nightstalker on order. Between those 3 knives that would cover all my needs but I know I'll be ordering more than what I need!
@@jelig72 I've got a Nightstalker hopefully coming in the next 2 weeks 🤌🏻 with the agent 003 in for a comparison. I have to keep my knives locked up with a little one running around so space is tight but I'm for sure keeping my Bushman and the Nightstalker hopefully 😁
lmao violent riots, such a clown
3v is an odd choice for this size of a knife. Sounds like they got some discounted stock now that Magnacut has been driving 3v prices down. Esee should stick to what they do best, make good entry level 1095 blades.
It's very weird because I love 3V but on a blade this small you're basically paying extra for nothing 🤣. I know Toors mainstay is 3V so I wonder what came first, choosing 3V or choosing Toor? I wish they had either done something more unique or stuck with Rowen and their 1095 and kept it around Izula II pricing. One of these and an Armatus sheath bump it up to like $250ish which is very spicy for what it is when I can get small batch or customs this size for that.
Great video!
Thank ya. I don't normally record myself when I'm testing gear but I may try to this go around if my little guy can hang with his mama for a bit soon. We're attached at the hip currently 😂

How do you like the svm? I have thought about grabbing one, But so many other T kells I want.. Yours looks like the old school Svm
Mine is the new bigger SVM (first batch actually) I just have big hands and an old clip on it 😂. It's very sleek and I dig it a lot but with my bear paws the curved handle is a little cramped. The MagnaCut from him is treated great too which helps a lot. I think only 10-20 of my colorway exist right now and it ran me $340 but the uncoated are around $320. Which is still spicy but around the range of the #003.
@WeFightTheDark I have small paws, I was hoping He was going to bring back the original Svm, One thing that turned me off was the Svm-R Way too much like the night stalker🤷♂️ I watched your video, thanks for the input 🇺🇸
@@ryanhendley4050 It's definitely a nifty return, I think it's been gone since 2018? Yoni mentioned bringing back a couple models so it'll be interesting to see what makes the cut. The SVM-R and DCK-R also overlap a lot so I wonder if he's going to discontinue the DCK-R for a while.
The Kell family has been great to us Tkellians, If you have not seen Tim's old school videos please go back and watch very helpful and humble. Absolutely amazing human🇺🇸

I have both and I carry the orange bailout 3v more than the Malibu I like the slimmer carry my daughter always jacks my Malibu lol.
Thankfully our little ones are too small xD. I also really dig how think it is. Pocket clip is a smidge tight for some of my pant hems but I can always bend it to fix that if I am ever not lazy.
Pro-Tech is a good company that likes you, Benchmade is a horrible company that hates you. Easy choice.
Truer words have not been spoken! I don't know who manages the pricing at Benchmade but they have to be a coke fiend. If their QC was better I'd be less salty.
I like the fox color
It provides some really nice contrast :)
Get a Kershaw Iridium for $70 and you won't cry if it disappears or Bubba borrows it and breaks the tip off using it as a chisel.
It really is good too, smooth action.
It's not in the same class, especially with D2 steel, but a great budget alternative. The Kershaw Bel-Air is more in line and IMHO better value than either, though I've heard some complaints about the bearings on that model. If I had neither and the Bel-Air came in a better color, I'd save the money and go with that for sure.
I filmed this while battling a fever so I apologize for being a little fumbly. Obviously the Bailout clip is the shorter one 😅.
Was rocking a 5.11 Rapid origin 25l pack for 3yrs and this lbt pack blows it out the water.
I basically look at LBTs civilian side as Jansport x 5.11 done the 'Murican way 😂❤️🤍💙. Love their stuff and actually have a 30L on the way.
This or LBT?
Ok that's a toughy. I always prefer to support domestic and the LBT 22L has more space and more/better organization on the front plus water bottle pockets on the outside. The CT comes with more polish though, better EDC centric materials and they're lined which LBTs aren't. LBT also lacks a laptop space which is critical for some folks, while CT has a fair one. For me I'd go LBT but most will like the CT more I think.
Blows my mind how his stuff isn’t even more popular than it is. I’ve got both sizes of the Flippin’, and they’re both in regular rotation with my EDC. Top quality stuff.
He's awesome and I'm hoping as word of mouth continues he'll get the clout he deserves!
ESEE Izula sheath was the same, and it was an injection molded plastic sheath vs kydex. I had to break through a little mound of plastic (like a retaining nub) just to get it out. Ridiculous
The injection sheaths are dog water in my experience 😬 Not sure why they're still doing them in 2024. I had to take sand paper to mine. They're driving a ton of business to Armatus though because he actually knows how to make a sheath 🤣
When I was about 9, I brought an empty disposable lighter to school, and adults freaked out for nothing. It was fun to play with making sparks against a handrail on stairs. A butane lighter with complete combustion is better than the rest. It can shoot the jets horizontally. But you cannot use it as a flashlight or burn armpit hair. There are dozens of brands. I rarely see Bic, just like with pens. It's an evil corporation, making the plastic opaque and filling only halfway with gas. The transparent, rectangular ones are most common, and more recently Form with a piezo crystal, which can be reused in a spark pistol for a gas stove. It doesn't seem to come out of my Honest lighter, so that will be done for eventually. They break eventually being made of plastic. The gas is advertised as a propane-butane mix. Some gas comes out in freezing conditions. I wonder how does the pressure work for a mix. My physics is a bit rusty. Maybe liquid hydrocarbons can be poured onto kindling or used to wash off glue, but I don't see any benefits if they are allowed to evaporate.
Looks like the rip stop is out right nwo
They JUST (like within the hour) restocked them :)
What is the real weight of CT21 in 420D Ripstop?
By my scale, with the included rain cover, it's just under 3lbs. Id say like 2lbs 14. oz or there abouts.
They discontinued the rapid quad zip.. this looks like a good replacement 👍🏻
I haven't seen them restock the black yet so I'm really hoping they didn't discontinue this as well. They have a weird habit of coming out with cool designs then nuking them within 1-2 years 😬 RIP AMP series.
@@WeFightTheDark Theyre in stock where i am, so ill have to buy one quick. What is up with them doing that!
I wish I knew 😭
really sad.
It seems quality control is all over with these. Some are fine, some are even worse than mine was.
